00:06:04.800 --> 00:06:06.959 Can a man learn this secret? 00:06:07.360 --> 00:06:20.480 Now, in your pocket or on your wrist, or placed upon your wall right now, you carry a timepiece that divides your day and your night into minutes and seconds. 00:06:21.199 --> 00:06:29.279 That is to say, the wheels and springs of your uh chronometers have been devised by thinking men to keep pace with astronomical bodies. 00:06:29.600 --> 00:06:41.279 So vast in size and in such gigantic magnitude are these astronomical bodies that this earth of ours compares to them about the same ratio that one drop of water would compare with the Pacific Ocean. 00:06:41.439 --> 00:06:54.480 Yet, the wheels of our time pieces must travel with these heavenly bodies at their same pace, subject to minor corrections. 00:06:54.800 --> 00:07:10.160 Now, I want to call your attention to the fact, the indisputable fact, that this earth fits in with a mathematical relationship to every point of light in the entire cytoreal system. 00:07:11.040 --> 00:07:18.000 Who is there among us who has the power to command the dawn and to cause the day spring to know his place? 00:07:18.639 --> 00:07:42.240 How how silly is this pride of a puny creature like man who dares to speak against Almighty God, who spake and said, Let there be lights in the firmament of heaven, and instantly this command was obeyed by the appearance of gigantic bodies of matter beyond the power of man to comprehend, much less control. 00:07:43.680 --> 00:07:47.439 I think more of the humility of Job should be in the heart of modern scientist. 00:07:47.680 --> 00:07:51.519 These scientists, they read the evidence of God's infinite wisdom in this ancient book. 00:07:51.680 --> 00:07:58.720 They ought to just humble themselves and apologize for even thinking they know anything against the knowledge and the counsel and the wisdom of God. 00:07:59.680 --> 00:08:12.240 One of the interesting sidelights of the ancient culture prevailing in the day of Job, as well as a marvelous anticipation of the wisdom of our day, is found in the 14th verse of this exam that God gave Job. 00:08:12.879 --> 00:08:20.639 Continuing this observation about the dawning of the day, the statement is made that the earth is turned as clay to the seal. 00:08:21.439 --> 00:08:26.240 This is a continuation of the preceding or thirteenth verse of the chapter. 00:08:26.720 --> 00:08:40.320 In the faraway days of that twentieth century or so before Christ, it was not customary for men to carry fountain pens and lead pencils wherewith to sign their names and transcribe their thoughts. 00:08:40.960 --> 00:08:56.960 No reader who's ever visited a museum, no student of history who's ever been to a museum, no listener to my voice right now who's ever visited a museum of archaeology, has failed to note the seals that were commonly in use in those days. 00:08:57.200 --> 00:09:05.200 These were generally round, composed of a semi-precious stone or some hard substance in which the signature was engraved in the matrix. 00:09:05.519 --> 00:09:16.159 This seal, perforated longitudinally and rotating upon a tiny axle of some hard material, was pressed against the face of the damp clay and rotated. 00:09:16.879 --> 00:09:21.120 As the seal was turned in the face of the clay, it left its inscription. 00:09:21.360 --> 00:09:25.600 The clay was baked in the furnace and then became a permanent record. 00:09:26.720 --> 00:09:32.559 Now see the marvelous illustration of this ingenious question that God asked Job. 00:09:33.120 --> 00:09:36.480 Out in space, the sun is shining. 00:09:37.200 --> 00:09:41.840 Its light flows forth without interruption, day or night. 00:09:42.320 --> 00:09:50.080 On an established orbit, about that sun, our earth is journeying on her annual orbital revolution. 00:09:50.559 --> 00:09:59.600 At the same time, the planet is spinning on its axis, turning in the face of the sun like the seal in the face of the clay. 00:10:00.720 --> 00:10:02.240 Did Job know this? 00:10:21.919 --> 00:10:28.559 You see, Bible leaving Christians don't have a problem explaining their beliefs to scientists. 00:10:28.960 --> 00:10:36.960 You scientists have a problem explaining your beliefs to those of us with God-given intelligence and common sense. 00:10:38.159 --> 00:10:46.159 Only the hand which started this planet in motion could have directed the penning of those words over four thousand years ago. 00:10:50.080 --> 00:10:58.240 You know, you'd scarcely expect to find the highly modern science of oceanography introduced into a book over four thousand years old. 00:10:58.480 --> 00:11:01.440 But here it is, the sixteenth verse of Job 38. 00:11:01.840 --> 00:11:07.440 Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea, or hast thou walked into the recesses of the deep? 00:11:09.440 --> 00:11:14.000 We have now traveled, I say we, I'm speaking of man. 00:11:14.480 --> 00:11:21.120 We have now traveled several several miles down into the depths of the sea. 00:11:21.440 --> 00:11:31.360 To that pale green twilight, at a comparatively shallow depth of fifty feet, it begins to uh change rather dramatically. 00:11:31.600 --> 00:11:34.080 Life on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico. 00:11:35.360 --> 00:11:46.799 And man has now gone down into the the very depths of of the oceans themselves. 00:11:47.519 --> 00:12:01.440 They have uh pressurized uh uh uh vehicles, they travel in ships, underground submarine type things, pressurized suits where men can actually uh get out and explore for themselves some of these deep places, they can't go down too far. 00:12:01.919 --> 00:12:05.360 But um it's an amazing thing. 00:12:05.759 --> 00:12:18.159 You can go down to the ocean floor, and yet no man on the face of the earth has ever entered into the springs of the sea since the very days of Job. 00:12:18.320 --> 00:12:23.120 Many men have walked in the recesses of the deep, but no man has entered into its springs. 00:12:23.600 --> 00:12:27.440 What and where are these springs of the deep? 00:12:28.080 --> 00:12:33.039 In some parts of the ocean, fresh water, fresh water may be obtained. 00:12:33.279 --> 00:12:37.200 There are places where strata and currents of fresh water are known to exist. 00:12:37.440 --> 00:12:42.480 Some men maintain that these are river streams, which have lost their identity in the sea. 00:12:42.559 --> 00:12:47.120 Other authorities say that they are artesian wells that burst out on the floor of the ocean. 00:12:47.440 --> 00:12:48.480 No man knows. 00:12:48.720 --> 00:12:52.159 Perhaps no one ever will know the ultimate secrets of the ocean floor. 00:12:52.639 --> 00:13:00.399 A great increase of knowledge has come to us with the work of scientists who deal with the sea, but there are some things that still elude our grasp. 00:13:01.519 --> 00:13:18.480 In one of the uh major institutes for the study of the sea, the United States of America, the curator of this museum in La Hola, California, uh, reveals many fascinating things that ocean biological research has revealed. 00:13:18.799 --> 00:13:21.840 But even in this present day there are things that are unfathomable. 00:13:22.799 --> 00:13:36.879 You can learn there at this uh Marine Institute for a Biological Survey that uh men have studied different types of life which are found at an ocean depth never before attempted. 00:13:37.200 --> 00:13:40.720 Their apparatus allowed them to go hundreds of fathoms below the surface. 00:13:40.879 --> 00:13:48.960 They hooked some gigantic Leviathan of the deep and started to draw him up with their steel line and uh their winch, and slowly they began to bring him in. 00:13:49.200 --> 00:13:53.440 Hundreds of feet from the surface, their line suddenly went slack. 00:13:53.919 --> 00:13:55.679 They said, We've lost him. 00:13:55.840 --> 00:13:58.720 Bring in the hook and we'll bait up and try again. 00:13:59.039 --> 00:14:02.240 When the hook came in, they found that they had not lost their catch. 00:14:02.559 --> 00:14:06.720 Still clinging to the barb was a piece of the mouth and a piece of the head. 00:14:07.600 --> 00:14:10.559 No man can know or ever will know what the creature was like. 00:14:10.799 --> 00:14:26.080 He lived at so great a depth, resisting the unthinkable pressure of the ocean floor, that when the pressure was relieved, his muscular energy constructed to resist tons of pressure, continuing to thrust out against the pressure that no longer existed, literally tore him to pieces. 00:14:27.679 --> 00:14:31.679 The life of the deep is not the only mystery that challenges the interest of man. 00:14:32.240 --> 00:14:36.240 We cannot now know the exact chemical composition of water at that depth. 00:14:36.559 --> 00:14:42.480 With great hope, a company of eminent scientists went one day to find the exact nature of water at the deepest spot then known. 00:14:42.720 --> 00:14:51.360 Their apparatus was especially constructed to thrust a reinforced brass tube down to a great depth, where a cleverly constructed device was to pull the plug from the tube. 00:14:51.519 --> 00:14:59.360 This would let the tube fill up with water at that stratum, and the operator would then close the tube with this plug so that no water could leak in from other depths on the way up. 00:14:59.519 --> 00:15:06.000 Thus they hoped to add the item of chemic contents at vast depths to our knowledge of the ocean. 00:15:06.320 --> 00:15:18.799 But the eminent gentleman came back sadder but no wiser, for when they thrust their brass tube down to the desired depth, they went through the motions of pulling the plug and closing it again, and then gleefully pulled it up, and to their chagrin they learned nothing. 00:15:19.120 --> 00:15:23.840 For when their tube returned, it was a flat sheet of wrinkled brass. 00:15:24.399 --> 00:15:33.120 The terrible pressure had flattened their tube to the thickness of a thin cardboard, and it looked as though it had been hammered and pressed into crinkled metal waves. 00:15:33.440 --> 00:15:38.159 Now you know what the Bible said over four thousand years ago, Mr. 00:15:38.320 --> 00:15:39.200 Scientist? 00:16:35.360 --> 00:16:38.000 We are a traveled age, no doubt about that. 00:16:38.320 --> 00:16:43.360 Job was unable to answer when God asked him, Hast thou comprehended the earth and its bread? 00:16:43.600 --> 00:16:52.080 Job, of course, said no, but today many of us have been around the globe, and the rest of us have read enough to be able to answer, yes, it's about 8,000 miles in circumference. 00:16:52.320 --> 00:16:54.879 And so we do advance and we do learn. 00:16:55.200 --> 00:17:02.399 But I believe one of the most pressing problems that challenged the intellect of primitive man was the problem of how to sit down and go somewhere while resting. 00:17:03.279 --> 00:17:16.079 Horses were harnessed, oxen were taught to pull great loads, maybe the mighty dinosaurs were utilized as the elephant is today, but all that man might travel in comfort and ease. 00:17:16.720 --> 00:17:21.759 Not satisfied with animal aids, modern man has made himself mechanical beasts of burden. 00:17:21.920 --> 00:17:27.759 The air is filled with these metal uh boxes with wings on them. 00:17:28.079 --> 00:17:37.920 Taking ourselves the wings of a dove and flying to the isles of the sea, because we've mastered the problem of speed and travel, we say that we are the most wonderful generation that ever lived. 00:17:38.559 --> 00:17:42.160 But with all this new culture, have we really progressed? 00:17:42.640 --> 00:17:46.319 Are we any closer to God than Job was and the other patriarchs? 00:17:46.559 --> 00:17:52.319 What is the spiritual and eternal value of a mechanical progress? 00:17:52.880 --> 00:17:55.839 Are we mentally the better for all our modern conveniences? 00:17:56.160 --> 00:17:59.519 Are we spiritually more upright for all of our inventions? 00:18:00.079 --> 00:18:06.000 Now I realize that if Job were suddenly raised in that resurrection to which he looked forward, he would of course be confused. 00:18:06.240 --> 00:18:10.960 But in one hour, he could learn to push the button on the wall when he wanted light. 00:18:11.279 --> 00:18:21.039 He could learn to flip the switch downward when he wanted the lights to go out, in the same hour he can learn to put in the fuse when the lights blue, and after all, that's about all the average modern man knows about electricity anyway. 00:18:21.440 --> 00:18:34.559 It wouldn't take Abraham, the friend of God, more than an hour to learn enough culture so that he could get on a bus when it stopped and wouldn't try to get on it before it stopped, and he'd know enough to stay on it until it stopped again. 00:18:34.799 --> 00:18:36.880 That's more than some people know now. 00:18:37.279 --> 00:18:43.839 Every once in a while you'll see a highly modern, cultured man picking himself up because he tried to get off a streetcar before it stopped. 00:18:44.319 --> 00:18:46.160 But we have progressed. 00:18:46.640 --> 00:18:48.880 Job had never been around the world to survey it. 00:18:49.119 --> 00:18:50.240 Modern man has. 00:18:50.640 --> 00:18:55.920 So with great pride we take ten points in our exam, and we answer this question at least. 00:18:56.160 --> 00:18:58.319 We've come a long way, haven't we? 00:18:59.599 --> 00:19:13.839 Another notable instance of the anticipation of modern scientific discovery by the ancient writers of the scripture is found in the 22nd verse of Job 38, where Job inquires or God inquires of Job, Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? 00:19:14.960 --> 00:19:18.640 Or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail? 00:19:19.599 --> 00:19:22.799 Now this word treasures has a very exact significance. 00:19:23.440 --> 00:19:26.160 Fiction is full of references to buried treasure. 00:19:26.400 --> 00:19:31.920 Many expeditions have been outfitted to recover the treasure of Captain Kidd or some other uh pirate. 00:19:32.319 --> 00:19:35.759 And we always associate financial return with this word treasure. 00:19:35.839 --> 00:19:40.160 So the treasury of the United States is the place where we keep our national deficit. 00:19:40.319 --> 00:19:44.880 The bookkeeper at your church is called a treasurer because he received funds. 00:19:45.359 --> 00:19:49.200 Well, what can possibly be the treasure that is connected with snow and hail? 00:19:50.319 --> 00:19:52.880 Well, maybe Job didn't know, maybe he did. 00:19:53.680 --> 00:19:57.039 But certainly no modern listener knew until Dr. 00:19:57.119 --> 00:19:57.519 Frank T. 00:19:57.680 --> 00:20:06.079 Schutt, a Dominion chemist of the Canadian Department of Agriculture, published the result of his 17 years of research in the financial worth of snow and hail. 00:20:06.960 --> 00:20:12.160 In an article released by Science Service, the results of Dr. 00:20:12.240 --> 00:20:14.480 Schutt's experiments were first released. 00:20:14.720 --> 00:20:23.039 He found that there was a definite financial value to snow and hail as they wash out of the atmosphere nitrogenous substances that fertilize the soil. 00:20:23.440 --> 00:20:36.799 The action of snow and hail, centrifuging through the air, deposits upon the land four kinds of chemical fertilizer: free ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, and albuminoid ammonia. 00:20:37.200 --> 00:20:46.559 These substances, to the present value of about$94.08 per acre, are deposited in a winter's fall of snow and hail. 00:20:46.720 --> 00:20:50.960 These are the forms in which the nitrogen of the air can be assimilated by plants as food. 00:20:51.119 --> 00:20:58.480 This is the equivalent of 44 pounds of expensive imported Chilean saltpeter per acre. 00:20:59.519 --> 00:21:10.160 If a farmer had 10 acres of land under cultivation, the treasure of the snow and the hail would be about$940 per year. 00:21:11.119 --> 00:21:19.680 Now, if you ascertain the number of acres under cultivation in your state and multiply them by$94 an acre, you'll learn what the treasure of the snow and the hail really amounts to in your own locality. 00:21:19.920 --> 00:21:26.559 If you multiply the number of arable acres in North America by this factor, you will get a tremendous sum of real money. 00:21:27.440 --> 00:21:34.160 So, there is exact significance to this strange suggestion in this chapter of Job. 00:21:34.559 --> 00:21:40.240 But again, I've got to ask you again, how did he know? 00:21:41.359 --> 00:21:47.839 How did he know what the modern scientist has just discovered a generation ago? 00:21:48.400 --> 00:21:58.400 Or could it be that the God who asked the question really spoke through this book called the Bible?
