continuing on in a series of broadcasts dealing with the Bible as science, in which we are showing you conclusively, beyond any shadow of doubt, that the Bible is the greatest book on science ever written, and that anyone who says that the uh the the basis, a safe basis for rejecting the Bible as being the word of God is by considering science, knows either nothing about science, nothing about the Bible, or both of the above. 00:02:03.599 --> 00:02:13.439 The Bible is the greatest book on science ever written, and not one fact of true science has ever contradicted one statement of any verse of Scripture anywhere in the Word of God. 00:02:13.680 --> 00:02:25.840 We have tackled on four radio broadcasts the arguments against Jonah and the whale, and shown beyond any shadow of a doubt that the truth of God's Word, the arguments that are directed against the record of the Ark spring out of ignorance. 00:02:54.879 --> 00:03:05.120 On this, as upon all other scriptural subjects, the person who challenges the inspiration and truth of the Bible succeeds magnificently in just one particular. 00:03:05.360 --> 00:03:11.120 That is, he advertises a boundless and abounding personal ignorance of the subject upon which he speaks. 00:03:11.680 --> 00:03:21.599 I have often observed that objections made to the biblical account of Noah's Ark are never made from the standpoint of knowledge, but from the viewpoint of misunderstanding. 00:03:22.319 --> 00:03:39.199 Many years ago, uh in a small town in America, a local infidel was boasting in one of the community centers there, that he was too educated to believe the Bible, and after thorough study, he had rejected it entirely. 00:03:39.520 --> 00:03:45.599 One day in an informal discussion, this wise unbeliever hung himself, as calves are said to do when they have plenty of rope. 00:03:45.840 --> 00:03:56.080 Turning to the teacher, who had for an hour confounded him in every point, the exasperated infidel asked, Do you believe the story of the Ark that Noah built? 00:03:56.319 --> 00:03:58.639 The teacher replied, I certainly do. 00:03:59.039 --> 00:04:01.360 A foxy gleam in the eye of the infidel. 00:04:01.919 --> 00:04:04.960 He said, Tell me, how long was the ark? 00:04:05.199 --> 00:04:08.879 Three hundred cubits long, fifty wide and thirty high came the answer. 00:04:09.120 --> 00:04:11.599 It must have weighed several hundred pounds. 00:04:11.840 --> 00:04:14.080 The questioner slyly continued. 00:04:14.319 --> 00:04:18.560 Why certainly, replied the victim, it probably weighed several hundred tons. 00:04:18.959 --> 00:04:31.040 Then cried the infidel in unholy, gleeful triumph, if the Bible is true as you claim it is, how could those two priests in Exodus pick up the Ark and carry it across the Red Sea? 00:04:43.040 Now it's not too much to say that this is a typical attitude. 00:04:43.360 --> 00:04:53.680 The critic who wisely discourses on the scientific impossibility of the story of the Ark hardly knows that there was an Ark of the Covenant, as well as the Ark of the Deluge. 00:04:53.920 --> 00:05:06.319 No believer ever need fear what science may say about the Ark of Noah, for science has said all it can say here, and its statements substantiate the account of that Ark as the record is given in the book of Genesis. 00:05:06.639 --> 00:05:10.959 In certain learned circles, it is considered quite witty to poke fun at Mr. 00:05:11.040 --> 00:05:12.240 Noah's houseboat. 00:05:12.480 --> 00:05:21.439 Even the brilliant doctor Brisbane, writing in his column, newspaper syndicated column, used to write against the ark on every chance he got. 00:05:21.680 --> 00:05:33.439 Speaking of the giant reptiles called dinosaurs, which some believe roamed the earth ages ago, Brisbane said that they were ninety feet long and weighed a hundred tons, and he said that Noah must have been crowded in the Ark with two of these. 00:05:34.240 --> 00:05:39.839 Now his honesty of intent is evidenced when he later says they roamed the earth five hundred million years ago. 00:05:40.160 --> 00:05:44.240 This is typical of the scientific criticism of the Bible. 00:05:44.480 --> 00:05:52.959 First of all, as evolutionists, they point to a time five hundred million years ago and talk about dinosaurs that then became extinct. 00:05:53.199 --> 00:06:01.040 And then they go back to an ark that was built 5,000 years ago and say, we don't believe the story of the Ark, because how would you get the dinosaurs on there? 00:06:01.519 --> 00:06:12.319 Now either these people are are st if if they're that stupid, you need to take the driver's licenses away from them and keep a watch on them twenty-four hours a day if they're that stupid. 00:06:12.720 --> 00:06:24.879 If not, they just spout off at the mouth classic examples of why no Bible believer should ever be intimidated by the arguments of science. 00:06:27.920 --> 00:06:33.680 Now the story of the Ark has frequently been picked out as a weak point in the Bible's claim to full and absolute inspiration. 00:06:33.839 --> 00:06:36.160 However, the critics may as well give up hope. 00:06:36.399 --> 00:06:38.399 There are no weak points in the Bible. 00:06:38.639 --> 00:06:47.120 Every section of the scripture that is or has ever been under fire has emerged from the crucible secure for all time. 00:06:47.519 --> 00:06:51.600 Especially is this so when the point has been a scientific one. 00:06:52.079 --> 00:07:05.040 Some time ago, a scientist who's a Christian was delivering a series of addresses in a small town in Texas and came into violent contact with a local infidel, an agnostic who had gained a good deal of pseudoscientific information. 00:07:05.360 --> 00:07:10.639 Vain speculation and impossible wild guesses all were accepted by him without effort. 00:07:10.879 --> 00:07:15.759 He was somewhat feared locally because of a superficial knowledge of scientific language. 00:07:16.319 --> 00:07:22.399 The Christian locked horns with him many times until finally he said, I don't want to talk to you anymore. 00:07:22.560 --> 00:07:25.120 You talk to me as though I were an ignorant fool. 00:07:25.519 --> 00:07:32.240 To which the Christian calmly replied, That's the finest case of self analysis I ever saw. 00:07:33.199 --> 00:07:42.240 Now the infidel was angry for a while, but then he came back to see the wearing and the wife or and to open the issue he challenged the truth and historicity of the account of the flood. 00:07:42.399 --> 00:07:46.240 He began by saying, Now take that ridiculous story of the ark. 00:07:46.480 --> 00:07:50.079 You certainly can't claim that story is scientifically possible. 00:07:50.639 --> 00:07:52.399 Certainly it is, replied the Christian. 00:07:52.560 --> 00:07:54.240 What's wrong with it scientifically? 00:07:54.560 --> 00:07:56.399 Just this, the man said. 00:07:57.040 --> 00:08:03.040 It was utterly impossible for Noah to get two animals of every kind into an ark the size of the one he built. 00:08:03.439 --> 00:08:05.120 The Christian responded. 00:08:05.360 --> 00:08:06.959 Let's examine your argument. 00:08:07.199 --> 00:08:10.000 How many different kinds of animals are there? 00:08:11.600 --> 00:08:18.000 The infidel looked for several seconds with a blank expression and then said, Well, I don't know how many kinds are there. 00:08:30.240 After some attempt to evade, he said, Well, I don't know how many kinds of animals there are, but I'll soon find out, and he left. 00:08:30.959 --> 00:08:34.480 Later in the day he showed up and he said, I know how many kinds of animals there are. 00:08:34.720 --> 00:08:36.159 All right, how many kinds are there? 00:08:36.320 --> 00:08:39.519 He said, There are one million different kinds. 00:08:40.159 --> 00:08:42.000 Now, of course he was wrong. 00:08:42.320 --> 00:08:44.480 His figures were highly inaccurate. 00:08:44.720 --> 00:08:54.720 But since it was his argument and not that of the Christians, he was allowed to make it, so he contented himself, the Christian did, by reply, Well, what's the argument now? 00:08:55.120 --> 00:09:00.879 He answered, It was utterly impossible for Noah to get two million animals into an ark the size of the one he built. 00:09:01.360 --> 00:09:05.440 But said the Christian, he didn't have to. 00:09:06.080 --> 00:09:13.519 Out of all the living creatures known to the science of biology, sixty percent of them live in the water. 00:09:14.159 --> 00:09:16.159 And the flood wouldn't hurt them. 00:09:16.799 --> 00:09:20.720 Even at that, he answered, forty percent of two million animals is a whale of a lot. 00:09:21.039 --> 00:09:22.559 Ah, wait a minute. 00:09:22.879 --> 00:09:35.440 You're forgetting, said the Christian, that out of the forty percent that live on the dry land, seventy out of every one hundred are insects, which certainly don't take up much room. 00:09:35.840 --> 00:09:42.960 Now, upon this, the infidel got somewhat excited and raised his voice to shout, but you have to admit that two elephants will take up a lot of room. 00:09:43.519 --> 00:09:58.320 And the Christian calmly smiled and said, Yes, but think of all the insects the size of fleas, which could be parked on two elephants, all of them counting and yet not dis detracting from the available space. 00:09:59.039 --> 00:10:08.879 In exasperation, the infidel then said, Well, no matter how you try to whittle it down, even ten percent of two million animals could not possibly get into an ark the size of the one Noah built. 00:10:09.679 --> 00:10:11.519 All right, said the Christian. 00:10:11.840 --> 00:10:13.600 How big was the ark? 00:10:14.799 --> 00:10:17.440 The infidel began to stammer and to stutter. 00:10:18.240 wide or whether it was ten feet long by twenty feet wide. 00:10:37.840 --> 00:10:45.360 The Christian concluded this phase of the discussion by saying, Now, do you see why we talk to you the way you and yet you claim it is scientifically impossible to get an unknown number of animals into a boat of an unknown size. 00:11:00.720 --> 00:11:02.960 That's some science, isn't it? 00:11:04.399 --> You should have found that out before you rejected the story. 00:11:16.399 --> 00:11:19.519 To which we say, Amen and amen. 00:11:20.399 --> 00:11:22.399 Well, the next day he showed up again. scientist rejecting the Bible on the basis of his scientific knowledge, now had to admit that he didn't know whether the cubit was ten feet or ten yards or ten inches or ten miles long. 00:12:03.279 --> 00:12:16.000 The Christian closed the argument by saying with all the kindness he could muster, If a child ten years of age manifested no more logic than you have shown in this argument, you would this time be determined, and yet you maintain that it's scientifically impossible to get two of an unknown number of creatures into a boat of undetermined capacity. 00:12:32.799 --> 00:12:37.840 That, Ridiculous. 00:12:53.600 --> 00:13:01.120 Now the argument wouldn't have sounded so silly unless you had some common sense. 00:13:01.440 --> 00:13:13.120 But if you've got any intelligence at all and didn't know the background, it'd still be sufficiently clear to your mind to start a train of logical thinking. 00:13:14.000 --> 00:13:20.480 When you point out to someone the depth of intelligence required to make a man reject the Bible on such flimsy grounds, you wonder. 00:13:20.799 --> 00:13:24.320 You wonder why anybody would follow a scientist instead of a Christian. 00:13:24.720 --> 00:13:36.879 Like most men who start to reason, when this infidel's eyes were open to the silliness of his position, he retracted his former statements upon making a study of the details that are given in the Bible record. 00:13:37.519 --> 00:13:43.200 Now many times I've witnessed the attempt of ignorance to assail the Word of God, and it's always easily frustrated. 00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:58.320 Now, we want to deal seriously with objections to the story of the Ark, as they have been presented by students and others, and we want to try and clear up several points. 00:13:58.559 --> 00:14:02.960 The first consideration in our study here is the question of the capacity of the ark. 00:14:03.200 --> 00:14:08.000 The exact size of this famous vessel may never be known. 00:14:08.240 --> 00:14:20.000 Scholarship, knowledge, and the science of archaeology have all contributed to their quota of information, but we still don't know very much about the exact capacity of this marvelous craft. 00:14:20.879 --> 00:14:30.799 The Bible text simply says, and this is how thou should make it, the length of the ark three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, the height of it thirty cubits. 00:14:31.360 --> 00:14:39.759 At first sight that seems enough and sufficiently specific, but how do we face the question how long or how much is a cubit? 00:14:40.799 --> 00:14:47.840 Now, up to the present time, this is a question that no scholar has been able to answer conclusively, although there are a number of opinions. 00:14:48.399 --> 00:14:52.960 The basis of measurement among the early Hebrews was a simple anatomical system. 00:14:53.360 --> 00:15:08.000 It seemed natural to base earliest measurements upon the parts of the body, and it's generally supposed that the cubit was the length of a man's forearm from the inside of the elbow to the tip of the longest finger. 00:15:08.960 --> 00:15:14.960 Now the only problem with this is that it would differ, of course, in various individuals, and confusion would result. 00:15:16.080 --> 00:15:24.799 This condition forced the adoption of a definite standard by the Jews and neighboring races, and in their later history Israel had a standardized cubit. 00:15:25.120 --> 00:15:33.200 Noah's Ark, however, was built many years before the Jewish race began, and the standards of later years do not help us very much here. 00:15:34.159 --> 00:15:36.879 There's also another possibility that we cannot ignore. 00:15:37.120 --> 00:15:40.000 The scripture speaks of the cubit of a man. 00:15:40.879 --> 00:15:47.440 Now does Moses mean that the cubit Noah used was the length of a man, or was it the length of a man's forearm? 00:15:47.919 --> 00:15:56.480 Or was there a cubit used that was measured perhaps by some other creature rather than man, maybe some beast of burden? 00:15:57.360 --> 00:15:59.039 The standard is variable. 00:15:59.200 --> 00:16:00.799 It may have been either one. the cubit that is here intended is the entire height of a man, the cubit of a man, however, we have still another problem with a totally different and varying set of factors. 00:16:19.120 --> utterly senseless for the critics to say we do not know and cannot know the exact size of the ark, but we do know that there's no way it could hold two of every kind of animal then living. How can you make a definite statement based upon something that is not definite? 00:16:54.080 --> 00:17:03.039 This here again, we're trying to point out to you on these studies the faulty logic and reasoning of those who reject the Bible on the basis of science. 00:17:03.200 --> 00:17:09.519 A scientist will say, fact number one, we don't know exactly how big the ark was. 00:17:10.000 --> 00:17:15.759 Fact number two, we know of a certainty all the animals couldn't have fit on the ark. 00:17:16.799 --> 00:17:20.000 You cannot reconcile those two statements. 00:17:20.720 --> that's all people need to reject the Bible this day and age. 00:17:38.640 --> 00:17:54.240 Any point of refuge in a time of storm, you know, anything to get out from under your obligation to submit yourself to the authority of God's word, but I'm telling you, it doesn't hold up logically in this life, and it certainly won't hold up in God's law court when you stand before him. 00:17:55.599 --> 00:17:58.240 Now the Ark was a ship of gigantic size. 00:17:58.400 --> 00:18:00.240 There's no question about that. 00:18:00.799 --> 00:18:10.400 To be conservative, let's take as a potential cubit the measurement advocated by the famous scientist and archaeologist William Matthew Petrie. 00:18:11.200 --> 00:18:17.920 He, being one of the foremost Egyptologists who ever lived, is entitled to speak with some authority. 00:18:18.160 --> 00:18:24.160 He says the oldest standard cubit was twenty-two and one half inches. 00:18:24.880 --> 00:18:27.759 Twenty-two and one half inches. 00:18:28.000 --> 00:18:32.880 Now, according to this basis, the Ark was a tremendous and commodious boat. 00:18:33.359 --> 00:18:43.039 Five hundred and sixty-two feet and six inches long, it would take a train of almost 1,000 freight cars to carry this enormous load or to provide this amount of cubic space. 00:19:25.279 --> 00:19:32.160 That these dimensions and this size are not out of reason, we see from two separate lines of evidence. 00:19:32.400 --> 00:19:38.400 First, the ancient legendary stories of the Ark make it much larger than this. 00:19:38.799 --> 00:19:46.799 It is inevitable that archaeology should uncover traditional accounts of the deluge and the ark from the monuments and tablets of lost civilizations. 00:19:46.880 --> 00:19:50.880 For these ancient civilizations were founded, of course, by descendants of Noah. 00:19:51.519 --> 00:19:57.279 When people have a common origin, it is always shown in their common traditions. 00:19:57.519 --> Babylonian accounts of the Ark differ in detail. 00:20:33.279 --> 00:20:45.440 One account found on ancient clay tablets described the Ark as six stories high, with a mast on top, it had a rudder to steer with, and the whole was crowned by a superstructure or dwelling. 00:20:45.759 --> 00:20:50.960 In addition to the presence of the builder and his wife, there was also a pilot who sailed with
