When your body keeps pulling away from intimacy, the instinct is to assume something is wrong with your hormones, your relationship, or you. What is actually happening is far more specific and far more workable than that.

A nervous system that has spent years in protection mode stops allocating resources toward openness and sensation because those are connection functions, not survival functions. You can want closeness and still feel your body close off the moment it becomes possible. That is not rejection. That is a very loyal, very exhausted system doing what it was built to do.

Most women in long-term relationships operate primarily from what researchers call responsive desire, meaning desire does not arrive on its own but requires the right conditions to emerge. Chronic stress, emotional overload, and the invisible weight of overfunctioning collapse those conditions entirely. The missing variable is not effort or intention. It is safety. Until your nervous system receives a clear signal that it is allowed to come out of protection mode, desire stays underground. Not gone. Underground. That distinction matters enormously. This Friday Reset gives you and your partner a concrete, no-pressure practice for sending that signal together. The Regulate Together practice works because co-regulation is the fastest route back to felt safety.

When two nervous systems slow down in proximity, shared breath, light physical contact, zero outcome orientation, the body begins to register closeness as safe rather than as a demand. It is not foreplay in the way anyone taught you. It is the foreplay that actually works when your body has been guarded for a long time, and it builds the neurological foundation that desire genuinely requires. If any part of you has been sitting with the quiet grief of wanting to want your partner and not being able to reach that, this ten-minute episode is exactly where to start.

They told you the fire dies at 50. They lied. Desire Reset Guide is your 72-hour erotic reboot — where you'll unlock the arousal pathway buried in your nervous system, reclaim the raw hunger you were taught to suppress, and rewire your body to crave pleasure again. Not because you're broken. Because you're ready to burn.

What if the reason you've gone from feeling young, passionate, and desirable to feeling disconnected, broken, and like you're living with a roommate instead of a husband…has nothing to do with your age or your hormones?

What if it comes down to a hidden cycle no one talks about - one that keeps women after 50 stuck, waiting for a desire that never seems to return?

That's exactly why I created The Desire Reset Guide.

It's for women after 50, and it reveals the real reason you feel broken - plus 3 simple practices you do over 3 days to finally reconnect with your pleasure, your desire, and your partner. 👉 juliemerrimanphd.com/desire

Your body is not rejecting your partner. It is protecting itself. And this weekend, you're going to give it a reason to let go. Sexy After 50. Improves sex and intimacy by healing your nervous system so you finally feel turned on and confident. We're waking up but never left. Desire and fire. I'm Dr. Jules. Let's get to it. Welcome back to Sexy After 50, the Friday Reset episode, where we keep it short, honest, and actionable because you have a life to get back to and a weekend worth showing up for. I'm Dr. Jules, and today we're talking about what happens when your body keeps saying no, even when your heart wants to say yes. And this girl, it's not about pushing through. Let's not do that. It's a and it's not about trying harder, it's about understanding what your nervous system actually needs before desire has anywhere to land. And then giving it that together this weekend. So let's get into it. When your partner reaches for you. So please know it's not broken. It's doing exactly what a nervous system does when it's been in protection mode for far too long. See, when you've spent years overfunctioning, let's break that down. Managing the household, carrying the emotional weight of everyone around you, pushing through exhaustion because there is always one more thing, building your career, managing the kids, the list goes on. Your nervous system, girl, it adapts. It stops allocating resources towards openness, receptivity, and sensation because there's not, those are not survival priorities. They are connection priorities, and your body has learned very efficiently to put connection on hold until the threat passes. The problem is that the threat never fully passes, right? I mean, that calendar refills, the mental load does not set down. And so your nervous system stays in this low-grade state of vigilance that is completely invisible from the outside, but absolutely present in your body. You can love your partner deeply, want to want them, and still feel your system close off the moment intimacy becomes possible. Not a character flaw. That is a body running a very old, very loyal, very loyal protocol that was built to keep you safe. What your body needs before desire, before touch, before any of it, the foreplay that you need is a signal that it is safe to come out of protection mode. Not a dramatic gesture, not a perfect evening, a signal, a quiet, physical, and completely pressure-free signal. And girl, that is your assignment this weekend. So this is foreplay. Not the kind anyone taught you about, but the kind that actually works when your body has been guarded for a long, long time. It is a co-regulation practice, which means you're doing it together. And the point is not to manufacture desire. The point is to create the conditions where desire can find its own way back. So here's how it works. Before you begin, you say this to each other out loud, both of you. This is not about sex. Okay? What? Sounds kind of counterintuitive, right? But bear with me. I'm going to wind it up. But you say to each other, this is not about sex. This is about feeling good in our bodies. That sentence does more nervous system work than you can even imagine. It removes performance, it removes expectation, it tells your body the outcome is not being evaluated. And that single shift can change everything about what happens next. So you sit together, facing each other or side by side, whatever feels natural for you. Phones down, no background noise, no agenda, just your physical presence in the same space. Each of you places one hand on your heart. It feels comfortable. Let your other hand rest lightly on your partner's arm or leg. Nothing invasive, just contact. You're not reaching for them. You're simply landing. Now breathe slowly without trying to sink perfectly. Inhale through the nose, exhale through the mouth, soften that jaw. Two minutes. Let your body arrive. You have been somewhere else all week in your head, in your responsibilities, in the future, in the past. This is the practice of coming back to right now in this body next to this person. After two minutes, quietly, notice what has shifted. Not what you want to feel, but girl, what you actually feel, even one percent calmer, is meaningful data. Even a small softening in your chest or shoulders is your nervous system responding. You're not looking for fireworks, you're looking for the first degree of thaw. And from there, follow what feels natural. Maybe you lean in, maybe you hold hands, maybe nothing changes physically, and you simply stay in the quiet together for a few more minutes. The rule is this nothing has to go anywhere. If desire begins to move to the surface, let it. If it does not, not a failure. That is your nervous system learning. Slowly, that closeness is safe again. That lesson compounds. Every time you do this without pressure or expectation, you're building the neurological foundation that desire actually requires. Do not push past the ease. Leave the experiencing experience feeling open, not obligated. That opening, girl, that opening is where everything begins. And I might invite you that y'all sit together, take a walk together, be together, and listen to this podcast together so you're both on the same page. Okay, girl, this is your body. And it's not saying no to your partner. It is saying not yet. Not until I feel safe. And this weekend, you are not trying to override that. You are trying to answer it. Two minutes of shared breath, one hand on your own heart, no agenda, the other and your partner, no agenda, no destination. That is the whole assignment. Easy peasy. I know it seems too easy. We've made life too damn complicated. The things we need are really pretty easy. So I just invite you to try this. Desire does not need to be forced. It can't be. It needs to be welcomed. And a body that feels safe will always find its way there. So, girl, go enjoy your Friday. Lord knows you've earned it. And if today's episode landed for you, please share it with someone who needs it and get ready to change the conversation you're having with your body. I'll see you back here next week.
