Yes, you can follow God and still be you but...

Can I serve God and still be me? This is a question that a lot of us as believers have. We want to serve God, but we don't want to lose ourselves in the process of doing that. We don't want to lose who we believe we are at the core, our personality, our likes and our dislikes. And the parts of us that we feel are just us. Sometimes we fear that following God means becoming someone totally different. And so today I want to say this plainly. You can serve God and still be you. But it has to be the real you. It can be the version of you that life taught you to be, it can be the version of you that experiences have distorted and morphed you to be. It has to be the real you, the you that God created you to be. Now when we imagine serving God and following through with whatever demands that He has placed on our lives, a lot of times we imagine becoming someone totally different, someone whose likes or tastes have to completely change, or someone whose ambition is totally stripped away. And a lot of times it's just fear holding us back from pursuing whatever it is that God has placed in our hearts to pursue. But God is more interested in revealing who He actually made us to be than He is in deleting or erasing our identity. The truth is there's parts of us that are essentially survival mechanisms. Over time, there are habits that we may have picked up, or masks that we may have begun to wear, um, or even defenses that we may have learned to put up simply to survive, simply to get by. And those things are things that we've become comfortable with and we have grown to believe are parts of us or are who we are, but they're really not. God's desire is to refine us, it's to stretch us, it's to bring us to a point where the real us, the version he desires and created us to be, begins to show and it becomes who we are. And so serving God is supposed to shape our character, it's supposed to bring us closer and nearer to him. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 3 18, and we all with unveiled faces beholding the glory of God and being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. And so the closer we come to God, the closer we get to him, the clearer we begin to see ourselves, and the more whole we become, and the more whole we desire to be. And so, yes, the truth is you can serve God and still be you, just not the version of you that you might be thinking. And so maybe the real question we should ask is not so much can I serve God and still be me, but who do I become when I surrender all of me to Him? Thank you so much for listening.
