This is the story of a bird that couldn’t keep his beak sealed.  Bud (the African gray parrot) is 19 years old and is living happily ever after, after witnessing the murder if his beloved bird dad Marty. Unfortunately, Bud still recites the argument before Marty’s untimely death and his last words. The feathers really fly when he says it and he was almost called to testify. This case will leave you wanting to fly the coop.

SPEAKER_01

Hi everybody! I'm Vera.

SPEAKER_02

I'm Mia.

SPEAKER_01

And we are Spectral Homicide. Um, so um Mia's gonna do a quick intro to the Alpha of the Day, very quick.

SPEAKER_02

Alpha of the Day is uh subject to change by Zaster. Um it was released in 2015, and um Robert Newslin and Christopher Hernandez do the vocals. Scott wrote wrote the album and did all the instrumentals along other than like backing guitars. Um and I love Zaster. Please check out the album.

SPEAKER_01

We already did like we'll share some of it in the in the link to the show.

SPEAKER_02

So we already we already did the introduction to the album.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, where there's like a that's a whole nother episode.

SPEAKER_02

That's fucking 30 minutes because I made the mistake of talking about Zaster.

SPEAKER_01

I think it's a mistake, I think it's a great thing.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I know. I'm saying duh. Yeah, I'm very passionate about it. Yeah, um, I I'm not gonna do that this time because we actually have to do our episode. We gotta lock in. I gotta get my homework done. Um uh Zaster is a black metal and neo folk project. I think that he's one of the most talented people ever. Um And he's a friend of hers. He is, he's a very good friend of mine. Okay, um, so please listen to his music by his merch.

SPEAKER_01

So um we're gonna stop slacking. We're gonna start making a more consistent schedule for this. Uh, we've been having a lot of fucking fun.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah, we went to Comic-Con.

SPEAKER_01

We did go to Comic-Con, it was a blast.

SPEAKER_02

Planet Comic Con.

SPEAKER_01

Planet Comic-Con. It was like a California. Different planet. Literally. Yes, it was.

SPEAKER_02

A planet with a mustard gas atmosphere.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_02

Don't get me started. Has been hotel fans who stink.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my gosh, be nice. No. Um, and like honestly, like, she's been doing school, I've been doing school, and like the weather, gotta be honest, it is not fucking easy being wheezy. Kansas, sometimes I could just like lose it.

SPEAKER_02

And I can't go outside and hotter than 70 degrees.

SPEAKER_01

Uh well, the pool's the pool will be up next month, but uh it's just like, oh my gosh, it's just been like today was like 90 fucking degrees, and uh, I've been doing a lot of yard work, you know, just getting my yard ready for uh summer.

SPEAKER_02

And I've been doing anything but going outside, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So I just I'm I I build like this oasis in my backyard, and it's fucking amazing. And uh, if I could screen the entire thing in, I would. But I'm screening a lot of it in. Bugs, yeah, bugs, they bug me.

SPEAKER_02

So, anyways, um Am I doing my half first or are you? Because oh my gosh, mine's gonna be shorter.

SPEAKER_01

So today's episode, we are gonna be talking about um the squawk herd around the world, a parrot's testimony, and so uh, but Mia's gonna go first. She's gonna be talking about animals that narked.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, there's not really that many animals that have narked on people. Parrots reporting crimes is actually surprisingly common.

SPEAKER_01

Really?

SPEAKER_02

But um, it's people who got caught because of animals.

SPEAKER_01

I fucking love it.

SPEAKER_02

It's so funny.

SPEAKER_01

I left my ass off doing my research.

SPEAKER_02

So this is surprisingly common. In uh in July 2012 in the UK, a di a dismembered body was found on the beach wrapped in plastic. Um, that's also really common. It is the UK, but um, the guy, the body of David Guy, uh the body had cat hair, cat hair on it, which was linked to his neighbor, um, David Hilder. It wasn't his hair, it was his cat's. I think that's important for me to be specific. He didn't a cat didn't kill him and do it. They would, they would if they could. But um the cat David Hilder. His next door cat's next door neighbor David Hilder. Um this solved the case because Guy's blood was also found in Hilder's place of residence. Tinker was rehalled. Tinker's cat. Tinker's um, I didn't find a bunch of details around this, but in 2012, also in the UK, I don't know what the fuck was going on in 2012 in the UK. And wasn't Margaret Thatcher alive then? Let's blame her.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know, actually.

SPEAKER_02

Um a dog named Max sniffed out a buried murder weapon miles in the forest. Dogs are really cool.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so side note. I don't remember where it was, and I can't look it up because I'm using my phone this time and like my things up. So there was I don't remember where it was. I'm gonna have to find out. There was the people that bought a house and somebody buried a fucking body and like just outside of the fucking backyard, and their dog dug it up and brought it through the doggy door.

SPEAKER_02

Like, not the whole that's fucking patent. Oh my god.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, she's brought so much shit through the doggy door. But like, I mean it was I mean, obviously it was a big dog, but they brought in like part of it.

SPEAKER_02

Like, I know Can you fucking imagine waking up with a hand on your bed? I couldn't handle it.

SPEAKER_00

You really got a hold of me. Gotta start with your best foot forward.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my god! I'm so sorry. No, dude, imagine waking up with a fucking arm on your pillow. I just you know what you think it you think you're getting you're just getting held by your lover very gently. And no, because they're just fucking dead. You know, like the necrotic arm.

SPEAKER_01

You don't even know who it belongs to. I mean, honestly, I kind of you know what being held is nice.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's killer.

SPEAKER_01

So fucking stupid. No, it's like, but with the amount of shit that our dogs brought in through the doggy door, I wouldn't be surprised. No, no.

SPEAKER_02

Norman Norman would bring it in, probably killed it too.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, I've well, I mean, like when he brought me that mouse.

SPEAKER_02

Norman probably fucking killed the person.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, you never know. He's pretty psychotic. And then Patton with all the lizards and the damn snakes. All the snake. The snake, how many snakes? How remember when I found that snake under your sister's bed? Yeah, and I buried it. No, that one was alive. Oh shit. That was one of them. Oh, there's Mr.

SPEAKER_02

And then there's the fucking snake in the laundry room.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, and all the fish.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my gosh that she was stealing out of my pond. Remember when we buried Mr. Miyagi in a blue coffin with a black lid?

SPEAKER_01

Yes. Yeah. That was actually really sad.

SPEAKER_02

A blue coffin with a black lid. That's what Chris said. I was like, huh. That was that's what Chris said.

SPEAKER_01

That is so funny. Well, he was too big to flush.

SPEAKER_02

His little dumbass! Okay, we had a koyfish named Mr. Miyagi. He was so cute. And we have we have a man-made, woman made, that one made.

SPEAKER_01

Me made. I dug it all by myself.

SPEAKER_02

Pond in the backyard. I did it for my turtles. Who ran away from the pond. Um they really did. They did.

SPEAKER_01

Um but it's because they were whores. They were! They okay, they were perfectly fine out there.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And then all of a sudden they reached sexual maturity, and like Felix kept showing off his little turtle wiener. Oh my god.

SPEAKER_02

Do you remember when he molested your friend?

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god. I felt so bad. I was so bad. Oh god, yeah. He was my friend Brady.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Like I at first be a lesbian, I think.

SPEAKER_01

And she said, I like girls. And so I put him back because I realized my turtle just um he's horny. Yeah. And so then he just, anyways, long story short, yep.

SPEAKER_02

He I mean turtles fuck shoes.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, well, they fucking left. So I don't have turtles anymore. And honestly, like at first I was upset, but now I'm okay with it. And he was too big, he just got too big for the tank. And I was like, you know what? You gotta think quality of life when it comes to animals. Like, I don't think a lot of people think that through. And so I said, you know what? I'm gonna put him in the pond because you know there's gonna be plenty of room in there for him, and it's perfect. There's a fountain, it's great. Um, but it was before I built the little shade tunnel over it, you know?

SPEAKER_02

And so okay, okay. We were out. He I wanted to check on him the next day. He liked to splash around in the little filter, like he did.

SPEAKER_01

He always slammed by and you because like he had a little fish giggle, like his little fish giggle. He loves giggle, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Uh he would splash around in the filter, and so he did this in the pond too. We saw him do it a couple times. Yeah, um, we walked out to go check on it in the in the backyard to check on the pond, and mom was like, Where the fuck is Mr. Miyagi? And then I looked to my right. He was under my hammock, he was just laying there because his little stupid ass decided to splash around and find out, yeah, and then he fucking got kidnapped by a by a bird. Like definitely an owl.

SPEAKER_01

It was either an owl or a hawk, whatever it was. Maybe there was two of them. Hawk two into my freaking fish.

SPEAKER_02

So no, and then they and then they dropped him because they flew into the fucking hammock. I wish I had that video. That little fucking moron.

SPEAKER_01

So they like dove down because he was gold and he had like this little mustache. He was so cute.

SPEAKER_02

I thought he was like silver.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, he was like, he was just a very light. He was beautiful. Oh my god, he was so beautiful. And like they swooped down, they grabbed him, and then when they went back up, they ran into my hammock and they dropped my fucking fish.

SPEAKER_02

They must have panicked. I can't believe I'm the one who found it.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah. So I'm standing like, where's my fish? And she kind of tapped me. And I went, Oh, mom, mom, mommy's right there. And I look and I'm like, oh, and the claw marks, like they were birds.

SPEAKER_02

That was a fucking that was a fucking owl.

SPEAKER_01

I whatever it was, it was big, and it was probably mad that it dropped that fish.

SPEAKER_02

I would have been pissed.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, can you imagine? So shortly after that, um, our old neighbor helped me build like the wind tunnel over it. Now it's turned into an entire Zen Den. And you know, our fish were fine until the bobcats started climbing the fence and stealing them out of my pond. And now I don't have any fish in my pond because I'm just over it. Just over it. I just give up on my little dream of fish. So, anyways, okay, so I'm sorry. So that's the that's the that's the turtle fish fucking pond saga. Yeah. Sad.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Um, a pet duck led authorities to the remains of its owner, Nellie Sullivan, who had been missing for two years. The grandson-in-law and the granddaughter had murdered her and stashed her body in a container under a trailer. The two had been arrested for in the past for animal cruelty, drug charges, and now first degree murder. A duck solved a missing person case because she fucking started under the trailer and they were like, What the? And she was like, What the fuck is going on here? Where's she at? And then the authorities were like, that duck is acting super weird.

SPEAKER_01

They probably thought it was like diseased or something, or like yeah, and then they looked and they're like, Oh shit. That's not grandma's tupperware, that's grandma in the Tupperware.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. They don't tell you about this, but that happens sometimes.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, she had been missing since 2020.

SPEAKER_01

That is fucking how did nobody smell that?

SPEAKER_02

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe they just smelled that anyway.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know. Can you imagine your body being discovered by your pet duck two years later?

SPEAKER_01

Maybe the duck knew she was there the whole time. He was like, would somebody just fucking look in this container and just somebody listen to me down pecking it? Like if only they're so pissed. They act like they can't understand a fucking thing I'm saying. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Like you said to duck. It's terrible. It's terrible. It's not funny.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's not funny, it's bad.

SPEAKER_02

But can you fucking imagine?

SPEAKER_01

Animals not to get if you want to commit a crime.

SPEAKER_02

Ducks, dogs, birds, cats, cats, oh yeah. Rabbits. They shed so much. Anyways, um, in 2002, this one's really fucking sad, actually. Oh no. Um, in 2002, Danielle Van Damme was kidnapped and murdered at age seven by her neighbor David Alan Westerfield. Her blood was found in his trailer, which got him arrested for kidnapping. But this, along with the hairs of her family dog on his comforter, her hair on the comforter, and her decomposing body, which was so fucking bad that they had to use her dental records to identify her. Jesus was discovered five days after his arrest. Um, the dog hair was the evidence needed to put him away. Fucking how?

SPEAKER_01

But so the body didn't do it?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you would think. Okay. Um, in a 2007 robbery, the culprit left on a horse which got the dumbass caught.

SPEAKER_01

Was he going through the desert to the horse with no name?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, for fuck's sake.

SPEAKER_01

Probably felt good to get out of the rain, huh?

SPEAKER_02

Dude, that reminds me of when Sunflower Bank in our town got robbed. Oh my fucking And then he escaped on foot! On foot. Broad fucking daylight. Broad daylight.

SPEAKER_01

You guys pink camo backpack. And he was wearing a mess cold and gloves. It was like fucking 90 degrees outside.

SPEAKER_02

That guy must be cold. But like you weren't suspicious when they were. Are you fucking serious?

SPEAKER_01

Parkour!

SPEAKER_02

He does a fucking barrel roll on the on the sidewalk in Heritage Park. What are we doing?

unknown

What the fuck is that?

SPEAKER_02

And then when I got pulled over, sitcom. You got and then she got pulled over for running a red light. I didn't even run it! I didn't even run it.

SPEAKER_01

I just I I did a California stop.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, she's gonna be around.

SPEAKER_01

When I was turning right, guys.

SPEAKER_02

And then he fucking stopped her, and I was really tempted because we were on the on our way to save the notes for auto movie.

SPEAKER_01

And I was like, don't you like a big thing? That's what I was thinking.

SPEAKER_02

I was I had to hold back like the bigger shit to worry about.

SPEAKER_01

I didn't leave on foot, okay? And I think it was the same corner.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Wow.

SPEAKER_02

It was right by Sunflower Bank.

SPEAKER_01

That's true.

SPEAKER_02

Y'all got bigger shit to worry about. Don't you have a fucking robber to catch?

SPEAKER_01

That's what I really wanted to say, but then I really would have been in trouble. I would have been in so much trouble.

SPEAKER_02

Oh god, I think it would be so bad. If I said it, you wouldn't have gotten in trouble. I was in the passenger seat, I would have been fine. She would have fine.

SPEAKER_01

She's my fucking wingman.

SPEAKER_02

I I need a kicker.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I need a kicker all the time. All my meetings, I need a kicker.

SPEAKER_02

It's basically someone who kicks you when you're about to say some stupid shit.

SPEAKER_01

So somebody's always sitting next to me. But sometimes before we speak. I it's hard, you know.

SPEAKER_02

Don't but like, but sometimes it's like And if we don't say it, like if we have enough self-control to hold back from saying something, our face will.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. But your sister's the same way. When she and I are in meetings, we have to sit next to each other because she knows she's I get it from her. She could tell by the look on my face when I'm about to say something stupid. And it's like sometimes I'll be in a meeting and I won't have a kicker. And everybody fucking knows I need one, right? And like, okay, I'm saying it. And then like afterwards, I was like, I can't fucking believe you said that.

SPEAKER_02

I'm like, why didn't you stop me?

SPEAKER_01

Where was my kicker? Yeah. Like this is something I should have.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Like, I should have I think that should be like in my IEP.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, teaching. Like, can I have an IEP? She's a fucking teacher. Can I have an IEP as a teacher? I think you should. I think I should too. Like, just for my meetings.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, I'm gonna teach university, so I think my entire thing is an IEP. Like, I can just do whatever the fuck I want.

SPEAKER_01

I don't I I just really think that I should have something there to stop.

SPEAKER_02

If we could have something that read our mind. Actually, no, that's fucking terrifying.

SPEAKER_01

Honestly, you guys would not believe half the shit I have to cut out of this show.

SPEAKER_02

I cannot fucking believe that they escaped on a horse. I'm sorry. Did nobody see that?

SPEAKER_01

Did he like jump up? Hi, who's silver? Oh way! Did he wear a mask? Was he Zoro? The three Amagos.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my god, the three Musketeers. Can you imagine? That is the dumbest shit ever. If you're gonna rob a bank, at least do it right. And also, like, if you're gonna kill someone, do it right. Like, don't have a cat and kill someone. You know that's gonna get you fucking caught.

SPEAKER_01

Or don't bring your crap, your cat to the crime.

SPEAKER_02

And also, maybe don't kill people.

SPEAKER_01

Look, I gotta be honest, look, okay, I would not commit a crime like that because like our job is to shed the so we have the fucking rabbits and the dogs.

SPEAKER_02

You shed.

SPEAKER_01

I do.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my god. The other day I was at work and my best friend she took a hair off my shoulder and she said, What bitches have you been seeing? And she was like, Oh, it's your mom. Because she saw it was bright pink.

SPEAKER_01

Bright pink. And I don't How do you know it's mine?

SPEAKER_02

Who else would it be?

SPEAKER_01

I know.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Or anybody, it would be her, but her hair is still dripping.

SPEAKER_01

Alright, let's stop horsing around.

SPEAKER_02

Can you imagine? You fucking dude. He got away on a horse. That's some looney toot shit.

SPEAKER_01

Wait, was it a slow horse?

SPEAKER_02

I don't know, but they've caught him from the fucking hoof prints. They hide behind a lamppost. Can you imagine you rob a bank and then their fucking horse's hoof print, your getaway horse leads them right to you? Give me a come on, come on, come on, come on, yeah. They had to be like the only fucking person in town with a horse, too. Can we blend again? Just hide behind a lamp. Just be less obvious. Let's address the horse in the room. An elephant would have been more discreet. Ride along the way. Where the fuck did you get that? Can you fucking imagine?

SPEAKER_01

I cannot.

SPEAKER_02

Like you didn't bring a broom and like sweep them away, like ride backwards, sweeping the horse sweeping the tracks away as you leave as you leave on your getaway horse. I'm a getaway horse. I cannot help. Oh, that just pissed me off.

SPEAKER_01

Oh I hate stupid people. I mean, you could be wearing a fucking parka in like July. Rob a bank.

SPEAKER_02

In a bright pink camo backpack.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

What the fuck, by the way?

SPEAKER_01

He got away on foot.

unknown

Oh, I was so missed.

SPEAKER_02

How does that happen? That's gonna you know, like in Skyrim when Ulfreak Stormcloak assassinated the High King. That's gotta be that security. I mean how the fuck did nobody stop that?

SPEAKER_01

Nobody saw it? There's something you don't see every day. Oh, he must be cold. There is just the Midwest politeness right here.

SPEAKER_02

I wonder, maybe it's the giant sack of money he's ha he's fucking hauling on his shoulders.

SPEAKER_01

It was a bank in Kansas. I don't think there was that much money. Oh my god.

SPEAKER_02

You might as well have been wearing like a like an eye mask and a striped shirt.

SPEAKER_01

Those little glasses.

SPEAKER_02

You might as well have fucking hamburglar. What the fuck? You might as well have worn a t-shirt said, I'm robbing this bank. And like a bright yellow highlighter fucking t-shirt. And they would have been like, I'm robbing this bank. And they would have been like, wow, that's so weird. I like your shirt. Where'd you get that? That's such a funny shirt. Oh my gosh. I'm just that's so stylish. Just stop. What the fuck? Oh, I'm pissed off. I hate stupid people.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my gosh. All right.

SPEAKER_02

So microphone. I'm yelling.

SPEAKER_01

So today we are gonna talk about the whole reason why we are talking about these animals is because our episode today is um about the bird that squawked. Um it's it's a parent's testimony. I mean, that's he squawked. He's squawked.

SPEAKER_02

He might as well be a bird that's squealed.

SPEAKER_01

There's this, there's this family. Uh, this is the story of the Durhams. They were a married couple whose tragic ending would become the most bizarre, one of the most bizarre true crime stories in modern history. Which, yeah, it really was. Honestly, I heard about this one like two years ago and I could not get it out of my brain.

SPEAKER_02

I hate to say it, but this is so fucking funny.

SPEAKER_01

Uh I I couldn't stop laughing, and it's really sad, but I still couldn't stop laughing.

SPEAKER_02

We need to go to that guar show because the the metal band with the parrot for a vocalist is is actually opening.

SPEAKER_01

Really?

SPEAKER_02

Yes. I wonder what they'd say.

SPEAKER_01

Well, so Glenn and Martin Durham, uh, Marty, they um live together in Ensley Township near Sand Lake, Michigan. They had been married for 11 years at the time of their deaths in 2015, between them, and a blended family of five children from previous marriages, three from Marty and two from Glenna. I'm sorry, it's it's just playing in my head and I can't get it. I know it's so bad. But life was uh pretty bad. So um Marty in 1995, he was in a car accident that shot the left side of his body, jeez, and left with minor brain damage. Yeah, huh? He couldn't work, he had uh disability benefits. Uh his Glenna became his caregiver, and she received government assistance that supported them both. Um, but then there was like after all this was going down since he couldn't work anymore, and she's like his caregiver and stuff, like finances really started to get fucked, right? And so basically, um she got like this Glenna got like this major fucking gambling problem, right?

SPEAKER_02

And so I would have told you to put me in a retirement home.

SPEAKER_01

I shattered the left side of his body. Could you imagine? I mean, how awful.

SPEAKER_02

But um I literally would have preferred death.

SPEAKER_01

So she started gambling, right? And she accumulated $75,000 in gambling debt.

SPEAKER_02

Jesus fucking Christ. I hate stupid people.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, their home was in foreclosure. Yeah, it was really bad. Um, and then May 12, 2015. Um, this is when shit just really went south. Because um, that night, um Martin Durham was shot five times. Glenna was also found at the scene suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, a wound investigators later believe was self-inflicted in a failed suicide attempt.

SPEAKER_02

Oh fuck's sake. How do you fuck that up?

SPEAKER_01

Um, she did on purpose.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but how do you mess that up?

SPEAKER_01

She did it on purpose.

SPEAKER_02

She didn't survive on purpose? Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah, she like no, no, I'm telling you, this shit gets fucking wild.

SPEAKER_02

That's like kind of impressive, actually.

SPEAKER_01

Uh she I don't know, like, I honestly I don't know through your teeth and stuff.

SPEAKER_02

out of your brain? I'm so confused.

SPEAKER_01

I I honestly don't know how she knew how to do it, but she totally did it this way on purpose because she won his life insurance. So um so it seemed like pretty straightforward. Oh stage burglary. Murder suicide kind of no she know she was um that that's not what it was. So basically she was just trying to like um she was trying to kind of cover up like what was going on like in the marriage and stuff because like he was gonna leave her. No like he was I think he was gonna go live with his family or something but he was he was getting ready to leave her and she fucking knew it. And so rather than like because he found out about like all the shit that she was doing and like totally pissed off. You need to kick her yeah you do. So what he did was um when she found out he was gonna leave her she was like fuck that you know if there's a divorce I don't get anything and we're already losing the house like they were fucking dead ass like super fucking broke right so rather than her lose everything and then everything else have to like I don't know figure out so because the only way she lived was through him I mean his disability benefits and she was the caregiver she wouldn't be his caregiver anymore so she wouldn't have a way to support herself yeah so excuse me sorry guys Kansas is trying to maybe get a fucking job you one would think right so but um what happened was she figured out a way or knew exactly how to do it to where she wouldn't die and then she wouldn't be tried she would just be this grieving widow who was like beside herself blah blah blah whatever so and so she probably would have gotten away with it can you imagine going through all that effort to get snitched on that yeah uh but there was the only witness was their African gray parrot it's like in styrim how horses can snitch on you for crime so and his name was Bud um African gray parrots are highly intelligent like we're too chill about the fact that birds can talk yeah I cannot even imagine like the first time a bird probably said something somebody said nobody fucking believed yeah they're what was they like no dude I swear to god that fucking crow just talked to me yeah so but they live like 60 years. They're known for their intelligence they can mimic human speech with like they can get it down to the fucking voice like they legit can and sometimes they could capture the tone the emotion the context which is actually what broke this whole fucking case wide open right so but you know he was just like after the guy died you know and she was hospitalized like nobody like thought that like I I don't know what like I'm thinking hang on a second she shot him five fucking times like she shot it five fucking times and then she shot herself so murder suicide she still would have like had to go to fucking prison I don't know what she was thinking how dare you kill yourself put your hands up or or maybe she was just trying to like maybe it was a stage robbery honestly it didn't even say that would make a lot more fucking sense it's just so fucking bizarre right this is the most bizarre case so so then the bird started to fucking squat because his parents got the bird right no his ex-wife his his ex-wife who we had children with got the bird right and so she kept hearing like he would be like having these little arguments and he'd do the woman's voice and he'd do the men's voice and then all of a sudden he would say go ahead put it towards the microphone play it again play again okay we're I really wish it wasn't censored so I know right there's like a lot of different ones so we'll have to find the non-censored version you if you want to search it up you can't go in the other room and search it up while I do this part it is so funny. I just kept listening to it because you there's a couple links where you could find where like Bud like does the whole argument right he's yelling in the woman's voice he's yelling in the men's voice and then all of a sudden it's like don't fucking shoot so honestly she probably did stage a fucking can't find it robbery so but the voice sounded just like Martin's and it was like the tone that the bird did that Bud did it like sounded like fearsome you know so everybody's like this is fucking weird right so family members believe that Bud had witnessed the finals couple argument and was replaying the last moments of Martin's life so his ex-wife gets the bird and she's hearing these fucking arguments and she's like what the fuck is this bird saying right so then she calls and I don't know why the ex-wife got the bird maybe it was like when they got custody I mean maybe I mean I mean it is a lifelong commitment it is four years old getting a bird you better live all those years. I'm telling you but you better put that shit in your will so basically what happened is his first wife got the bird back right so I think that she had the bird from the divorce no he got the bird in the divorce and then when he died you know his ex-wife's like well I'll take the bird you know and so she keeps hearing this fucking argument being replayed over and over and over again and then she's like I need somebody to help me with this so she calls his parents right his parents come over and they listen to it and they're like what the fuck right so she recorded the she recorded the parrot and she turned the footage over the investigators so this was like a you know this is when the this like the whole legality of the situation came into play because they're like can the parent testify in the murder trial no seriously seriously so and the prosecutor considered it and like his parents his mom was like it was the most fuck are you gonna ask it I I don't know where were you but like his mom was like that bird was the most foul mouthed bird that she had ever met and that's that's what his mom said she was just like I love when birds are potty mouths. I do too it's the funniest shit ever oh I got a story about my grandpa's birds it was actually please so I think I've heard it my grand um I'll I'll stick to this and then I'll tell the story about my grandpa's birds it's actually pretty funny. Um so the Nuego County prosecutor Robert Springs did acknowledge that they were exploring whether or not Bud's repeated phrases could be used as evidence or at least investigative insight but in the end they didn't need him. There was already enough evidence to move forward with the case and legally the parrot's testimony would likely be considered hearsay yeah like they said that he could have heard it on a show right um still the idea of the bird being called as a witness was capturing like national attention because but because his he never took the stand like they said his words like lingered like did he just not show up he didn't show up like he flew the coop um and so he was not the early bird he did not get the world so no he wasn't the early bird he's like fuck him up Gary no but uh but basically like because of what he was saying like you can hear the entire argument right he was literally just breaking it down and so they're like because of what he was saying they already hated her so she probably did try to stage a break in dude that bird must have hated her probably can you imagine you go through all that effort to like fake a suicide attempt and then you get you you go to prison because of a fucking bird. Yeah see and that's the thing I think that she really that is that is giving her the bird yeah he gave her the bird he did yeah he's like fuck you and your feelings so and he's like and I'm out peace but um yeah I mean honestly I think that's what it was I think it was a stage break and and it's kind of bizarre like it in all the sources that I looked at like none of them said that they said it was a murder suicide so I was thinking like I was really not a good one well it's like I'm thinking why would you do that because like you still wouldn't get anything because you killed them yeah like I what what what were your plans?

SPEAKER_02

I'm saying like what the fuck were you thinking?

SPEAKER_01

Um so anyways um right now July of 2017 after eight hours of deliberation a jury found Glenn Durham guilty of first degree murder the case remains one of the strangest intersections of animal behavior and criminal justice a reminder that sometimes the most unexpected witnesses may remember more than we think so can you imagine I couldn't um my um my sources for this were um investigation discovery um BBC news NBC news and unfiltered stories but um yeah so that's that was the story of it so I would be his ex-wife still has the bird to this day well yeah it's gonna live forever and well 60 years anyways I don't know how old six or seven so I don't know how old Bud was when he got him or whatever but he's still got quite a few good years left in him but I mean it's really hard to like I don't know okay story okay so the story of my grandfather so my grandfather um he was in the Marine Corps for 35 years retired master sergeant um but he when he retired he had like all these different ideas about how to make extra money because they had 13 kids so his first thing was he was trying to do like um basset hounds he'd breed basset hounds right but then my grandmother decided that all the grandchildren should have their own basset hounds so grandpa did not make any money off those dogs because everybody got one right so then he's like oh I don't know what he expected to happen uh you know what I I know yeah um so then he started um with rare cats Persian cats right I remember next thing you know everybody has a Persian cat and then he had the birds he had so many different birds I remember getting conyers I got doves we got parakeets we got oh my gosh I mean we got a pigeon and we had so many birds so many my poor grandfather I would fucking love to have a pigeon oh yeah you know Albert trying so hard to domesticate themselves again because they were like the original domesticated animals yeah they were they were I mean people are just so fucking mean to them they don't understand that's their survival skill um when they come they are not native to fucking cities they're native to like cliffsides yeah exactly like by the ocean yeah Albert Albert my my twin brother um his was named Meatloaf he named his pigeon meatloaf I had Walter and love dove my doves yeah my sister had canaries my mom had a a a conyard named Polly and um no hers was condi my grandfather had one named Polly right and my grandmother used to make him dance and sing and he would dance with her and he would sing with her oh they're such good they are so smart um but when my uncle Harold came home from the Navy he taught him to say all sorts of bad stuff and so my grandmother was cleaning one day and uh Polly said something I think he said motherfucker or something like that and she was like Polly she was so upset I I mean I some of the stuff that that bird said I cannot repeat not here but oh my god I think that's where I think your aunt got one motherfucker no that's just how she did it two motherfucker three motherfucker oh I'm mad now oh my god it was so fucking funny I think I got it down yeah you do I don't right now because it's not easy being wheezy yeah yeah I'm I'm a little wheezy too yeah so anyways um that was our uh great parrot debacle you know we just had to squawk about that yeah yeah so um we hope that you enjoy this episode and we hope you keep listening yeah yeah um don't fly away you know and we will uh see you guys next time we're gonna do another episode later on this week uh I'm not gonna tell you what it's gonna be about but I have some ideas yeah it's the one of the investigations I even I don't know yeah surprise it's right it's one of the investigations we've done yeah yeah I'm not gonna it's an unnamed location but it's definitely been uh been on my mind lately so yeah all right well you guys have a great fucking week um I hope you have uh a great Easter if you celebrate if not um listen to Zaster buy his merch and CDs in vinyl have a great day thank you bye
