Two founders can build the exact same business for completely opposite reasons — one from fear, one from truth. In this episode, Afzal Patni breaks down how to tell the difference from the inside, why fear-building never satisfies no matter how much you achieve, and what it actually takes to shift the fuel underneath your ambition.

I want to talk about something that took me years to understand about ambition and about myself. There are two reasons a person builds something fear or truth. And here is what makes this so hard to see. From the outside, they look completely identical. Two founders can build the same business, same R, same intensity, same results on paper. But one of them is running from something and the other is moving towards something. And the difference invisible from the outside determines almost everything about their life actually feels and where they eventually end up. Today I want to help you figure out which one is driving you. Because most people never stop to ask, they just keep building, assuming the restlessness will resolve at the next level. Let me describe fear building because it is far more common than people admit and it hides extremely well. Fear building is when your ambition is powered by something you are trying to escape. Maybe it is the fear of not being enough, so you achieve to prove you who you are. Maybe it is a feeling from childhood that you were only valuable when you produced, so you never stop producing. Maybe it is the fear of being ordinary, of being judged, of being seen as a failure by people whose opinion shaped you long ago. Whatever the specific fear, the mechanism is the same. You are not building towards something you want, you are building away from something you cannot stand to feel. And here is what makes it so deceptive. Fear is powerful fuel, it works, it produces real results, real businesses, real success from the outside. A fear-driven founder often looks more driven than everyone else because they literally cannot stop. Stopping would mean feeling the things they are out running, but there is a catch built into it. Fear building can help satisfy you because the goal was never actually the goal, the goal was to finally feel okay, and many people operate from fear, it's a normal biology of our body. That is how we are trained. It is a survival instinct in the end, and achievement does not deliver that, you know. So you hit the milestone, you feel relief for the day, maybe a next week, and then the old feeling creeps back, and you need the next bigger goal to outrun it again. This is why so many successful people are quietly miserable, they did everything right. This is what I was also operating from a particular time. The amount of money I have burnt by operating from that scenario, just from the scenario of building something, uh fear of losing, fear of being lesser, fear of not being able to stand on my own two legs, that itself made me choose multiple wrong financial decisions. And I understand that how others feel at that point when that suddenly they get the wrong results they were never expecting, or hesitant things they just choose they want to do and hesitantly say yes to self and regret it later. This is why the feeling which is coming from inside keeps coming back again again, and you're trying to escape it, it's still there, waiting at every new level because they bought it with them. You cannot outrun something that leaves inside you still. Now, let me describe the alternative building from truth. Truth building is when your ambition is powered by something genuinely yours, a real desire, a real vision, something you are moving towards because it matters to you, not because you are escaping a feeling. I want to be honest about something because people romanticize the truth building is not enough, it is not all flow and joy and effressed motivation. No, it's still it is hard. Every day is going to be different, every day is going to be new challenge towards whatever you feel like building, because there will be tests from universe to check if you are committing to this, whether you really dowards it, whether you will stumble, if a barrier comes in between, whether you will leave it after three months, everything is being tested, and when the test arrives, if you are not standing strong, which in most cases happens, you will go back to the base, you will restart something new. So that the whole standing strong thing is demanding. You still face fear, you still face doubt, you still face execution and the exhaustion of the whole scenario. The difference is not the difficulty at all, the difference is what it does to you underneath. Fear building, even when it succeeds, leaves you more depleted, more anxious, more disconnected from yourself over time. Each achievement costs you something and gives back less than you hoped. You work hard, you work excellent, and towards the end it's about the next thing. You are never happy with the one which you just achieved. Truth building, even when it's hard, leaves you more yourself, more settled underneath, even in the struggle, because you are not at war with a feeling or running away from one thing, you are expressing something real, the work, even when difficult, is aligned with who you actually are, and the alignment is the thing that makes it sustainable. That's why I say my whole intention with reserantropy is to connect people with their true consciousness to make them see who they really are, to make them connect to their true self. When that happens, they operate from a different league altogether, they operate in direction which they always wanted to do and they never could not because of multiple reasons, which is okay, but important part is they get the awareness factor of it and they choose the alignment towards heading to their true self. So truth building is one of the most sustainable things here, and here is a simple way to feel the difference after a hard day of fear building. You feel empty and need to numb out, scroll, drink, distract, anything to not feel after a hard day of truth building. You feel tired but full satisfied, like the tiredness meant something. You know, you achieved something that that feeling is there, even when you are reaching out to one person and you're helping that one person somehow through your business, through how you are, through whatever you're building, you feel good about it, and then that feeling just multiplies from there one to two, two to five, five to ten, however it would be. Now, here is a simple way to feel the difference which I told you. Now, how long your day goes after a hectic work, you can sit down and just observe this. Same long day, same hard work, completely different residues will come. The residue tells you which fuel you are running on. So the real question is if your discover you are building from fear, can you change the fuel? And the answer is yes, definitely, but not the way people think. You do not change in by forcing yourself to be more positive. What happens in that is it last up till the fuel meter of your motivation lasts, then life kicks in and you go back to the whole same module, same operating system. And this is why many people make commitment and they take it and they do it again and again and again, and this is why your brain learns this person's commitment means nothing to himself or herself, and our brain learns it in a very negative manner, and whenever we are actually trying to get do something, your brain doesn't respond, you will be going back to the bad habits scrolling, time pass, procrastination, whatever it would be, and this is years of experience and years of training to brain. So a little bit of positive motivation will help for time being, but we are looking towards sustainability, towards alignment. You do not change it by setting better goals or finding your why in the worksheet, those are surface fixes on a deep mechanism, but they are very crucial to be understood. Okay, so change it by going to the fear itself and dealing with it at the root cause, confront it on whenever you're sitting with it after awareness. You know this fear now. You have the chance to confront it. It is the most difficult thing to do because even this 5-10 minutes will make you cry, will make your emotions come out and will make you see something which you didn't want to see. And here is what I mean. The fear driving you was installed a long time ago. The belief that you are only valuable when you're pro when you're when you produce something, the belief that being ordinary means being unloved. The belief that if you stop something bad happens, these beliefs feel like truth, but they are all conclusions formed by a younger version of you under pressure with limited information. For example, when you were a child, parents would only give you the love and affection which you needed if you performed well in academics, and that stayed with you. Similarly, there are many scenarios like this, and while those beliefs run unexamined, they will keep driving you, you will keep building from fear no matter how much you achieve because the engine underneath has not changed. The shift happens when you actually face the fear instead of outrunning it, like I said. When the body part will actually ache with that particular emotion when you go back to where the belief formed and see with adult eyes, that is never true in its own self. That was good for that time being and that experience of your life. That doesn't mean you hold on to that and use it through throughout your life. And here is what happens when you do that work, the fear loses its grip and not all self, and suddenly you're ambitious and about stuff which you d you which you had been delaying or you had never thought you loved this much. And this ambition doesn't disappear. That is what people are afraid of. That you know if they'll change their identity, if they change their bit of thing, they'll lose themselves. You wouldn't, you will lose just one part of you that was holding you back, but you will be building so much newer stuff, newer feelings, newer intentions. The drive is there, the drive will build after fear. You will not lose the drive, you will actually gain it, it won't vanish, it transforms, it becomes cleaner. You still build, still achieve, still want big things, but now you are moving towards them instead of running from something. Same ambition, completely different fuel, and a completely divent experience of your own life. And the best part you connect to every human being on every level that human consciousness you connect to that, the feelings you associate with their feelings, you understand others' emotions and where they are coming from too. And once you do that, the customer relationship, the acknowledging of a product where they're looking for, the service which you can provide, that all becomes some smooth lines. You ask better questions, you actually sell your product to who it's needed, not for the sake of just selling. You build something for others and for yourself. And isn't that who we are? A collective consciousness beings. And if not, that is how we are supposed to be. And that is why we connect to each other on a human level. That is the shift from building to escape to building to express, and it is available to anyone willing to turn around and face what they have been running from. Something to sit with this week, think about what you are building right now and ask yourself one honest question. If I already felt complete enough, if I had nothing to prove to anyone, including myself, would I still build this? If the answer is yes, you are building from truth and the path is to keep going while clearing what your fear is still mixed in. If the answer is yes, you are building from truth, and if the answer is no, if you realize that a lot of your building is an attempt to finally feel okay, that is not a failure, that is a learning curvature, that is the most useful thing you can discover because now you know the real work, not another goal, the feeling underneath the goal, face that and everything you build from there gets lighter and more yours. You live your life, not get run by a business, you run it, you run your life, you govern your life how you live, and you govern the business.
