Episode 12: You Didn’t Choose All of This — You Didn’t Question It
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Most men don’t realize they’re living a life they didn’t fully choose.
They just kept going.
Taking on responsibilities.
Saying yes.
Handling what was in front of them.
Until one day… everything works—
but something feels off.
In this episode, we break down what alignment actually means, and why burnout, frustration, and feeling stuck often come from living out of alignment—not lack of effort.
We talk about:
- the difference between a life that works and a life that actually fits
- why high-performing men still feel off, tired, or disconnected
- how misalignment shows up in your energy, focus, and relationships
- why most men think they have a boundary problem—but actually don’t
If something feels off—even when everything looks fine—this is where you start.
This isn’t about fixing yourself.
It’s about paying attention in real time.
Because once you see it…
you don’t get to pretend you don’t.
If this hit, share it with someone who needs to hear it.

At some point, you stopped choosing and just kept going. You didn't choose all of this. You adjusted to it. Piece by piece, responsibility by responsibility, until one day your life works. But something's off. Makes sense on paper. But it's doesn't make sense to you. Most guys they think that's a boundary problem. And it's not. It's an alignment problem. Welcome to the Man in Motion Podcast, episode 12. You didn't choose all this, but you damn sure didn't question it. I'm Bob, and this is a show about paying attention to what most people don't in real time while it's happening. No hype, no fixing, just awareness, responsibility, and the work that doesn't get talked about ever forward. Let's get into it. You know, in the last episode, I uh talked about burnout. And I mentioned in there that we were going to start doing some exploration on boundaries in future episodes. And I sat down to work on it, and I very quickly realized that there is so much to boundaries about boundaries to talk about that if I did it in one episode, we'd be talking for about four or five hours and maybe do 5% of the topics that really need to be talked about. So we're going to spend the next couple episodes talking about different aspects of boundaries. Today's topic is alignment. Most people think that living in alignment means you're comfortable. No. If everything is comfortable, I guarantee you you're avoiding something. Most people think living in alignment means life is easy. Alignment does not mean easy. In fact, sometimes living in alignment is the hardest thing you can do. Some people think alignment means you're happy. You can be aligned, and you can still have hard days, frustrated days, days where you doubt what you just did, where you question everything. Or that alignment means only doing what you feel like. Let me ask you a question. If you only did the things you feel like, how many hard things would you actually do? Huh? How many? And it does not mean freedom from responsibility. Alignment doesn't remove weight. Alignment defines the weight that is worth carrying. See, most guys think all those things mean that you're living in alignment and life is great. And that's where this really starts to go sideways. What alignment actually is, first and foremost, you're choosing what weights you're carrying. It doesn't mean you carry everything. But the weights you decide that matter, you carry them. And this really here, this next one is going to be the compass. Your actions match your values. You're not saying one thing and living another. While you're doing 70 hour weeks and you haven't seen them in 10, 12 days. Yeah. That one hit me too. Your responsibilities make sense to you. Even when they're hard, when they match your values, you're going to understand why this is a burden you choose to carry. And your efforts, they're pointing you somewhere intentional. You're not just running around busy. You're going somewhere. You're doing something. Something defined, something that you've chosen and aligns with those values we talked about. And you're not going to have to negotiate with yourself over these things. You're not going to question your decisions because you're going to know what's important with you. Alignment means your life makes sense because you've chosen it based on what matters to you. And the problem is, we live in a world today where most people, not just men, but people, don't actually live like that. Not because we're weak, not because we're avoiding. But because somewhere along the way we stop choosing. And when we stop choosing, there starts to become a gap between what we value and what we say things matter, but your time says otherwise. Yeah, this was me too. I when I started realizing this, it really slapped me. Your actions drift away from your values slowly. It's not an all-at-once thing. It's not like you drop everything and run. But somewhere along the way, there was something that wasn't quote unquote worth the struggle. And that was where it started. And you won't feel the effects of it immediately. But eventually, as you drift further and further and further, there becomes this growing disconnect. This feeling of something is off. And you don't really know what it is. And the concept of this works replaces this is right. You know, the idea that life becomes functional instead of intentional. And you it means you've optimized your life around the stable, easier path. But what did you lose? You've stopped asking, does this fit me? And you've just started asking, will it work? And the shift is gradual. It's not dramatic. It's not like this big grand event. It's not dramatic. And when you look back, you're not going to find a specific moment where you can say it happened. Because each step in the process is going to have made sense. And oftentimes, there was never time to question the decisions. Because responsibility never stops. And the worst part is most of us know something's off. And we would change it if we could. But we just don't know where to start. We don't know how to get back there. We are lost. We don't have a map back. And frankly, all this living out of alignment, it's costing you. And you're probably staggering under the burden of the cost. You're tired. You just feel drained constantly, but it's not from the effort. Because the effort's not in and of itself a problem. It's because you're putting the effort into the wrong direction. And everything takes more energy than it should. It's like you're uh you're, and this was me, man. This was me to a T. I was always running. I never had a minute, but I never felt like I was getting anywhere. And I was irritable. I had a short fuse. Stupid things would just wreck my day. Things that really didn't matter would make me explode. And I had no patience for anything. And instead of stopping and actually responding to a situation, I would just react. And it wasn't good.
SPEAKER_00How about the disconnection?
SPEAKER_01That feeling of being alone in a crowded room. You just feel alone. And you're disconnected from everyone, from your work, from your friends, from your family. And then one day you wake up and you look in the mirror. And you go, who the fuck are you? You're standing there. You're the one looking. So you know it's you in that mirror, but you don't recognize it. Don't recognize that person. You're there, but you are not really there. You're going through the motions. You're functioning. You're showing up. But you're not engaged. Life has become maintenance and not intentional movement. And the things that used to matter to us, the things that were so important to us, they feel flat. Wins don't matter. And you've probably even asked yourself the question: what's the point? Why am I bothering? And if you're very, very lucky, there's a moment where you notice. You have that moment of clarity. That moment where you can see everything that's happening. Everything that's gone on. Where you are, where you've been, the choices. You see it all. You recognize the burnout. You recognize that you are so far away from where you wanted to be. And things change. And it's a very small shift in perception. And it could be a simple comment, a question, a quiet moment, a smell, a taste, a song. It's nothing dramatic. But it just hits differently. Something breaks that autopilot. And for a moment, for just a moment, you get that moment of clarity. And you realize that there's this gap. And it's the life you're living versus the life you want to live. And you realize all those compromises of, yeah, that works. I can live with that. We're wrong. Because they didn't feel right. And you can't explain this whole feeling away easily. That, my friends, it's not confusion. It is when clarity is starting to return. Back in episode one, I asked y'all a question. Did you choose this life? Or did you default into it? And I told you back then that you didn't have to answer it. Not then. Not yet. But just to look at it. This is now episode 13. And I'm still not asking you to answer that question. See, what we've been doing, and I'm going to pull back the curtain here and let you see the wizard. My goal here is not to solve all your problems. My goal here is not to tell you what to think. My goal here is not to give you all the answers because frankly, I don't have them either. What I do have is a question. And it's the question most of us avoid. Because it makes us look at our life, makes us look at where we spent our time, the choices that we've made, and the things that we've chosen to spend our time on. And it makes us compare them to the values that we live. And it's uncomfortable as hell. No two ways about it. It is uncomfortable. It is scary, it is harsh, and it makes you question everything. What's worse is when you're not living in alignment. The answer seems to be pretty clear. But then you look at it. And now you can't unsee it. You go back, or at least you try. But the old normal is gone. You can't get it to line up right anymore. And the things that used to make sense, they they don't make fucking sense anymore. And it starts getting uncomfortable because you realize that off feeling, that feeling of this this just isn't right, and then I don't know what it is, you start to see the shape of it. You start to recognize where it is. And you have to make a choice. It really forces you to make a choice. Do you keep going the same way that you were and pay those costs? Or do you start paying attention? Not with the intention to fix, but just to notice. And it hit me. It hit me in a flash. And it was a it was a short moment. I can picture where I was, I can picture what I was looking at, and it stole my breath. And I tried to go back. I desperately tried. The problem was, even though nothing had changed in that moment, everything was different. I was different. Because now I could see it. Now I knew what it was.
SPEAKER_00Now I had a direction.
SPEAKER_01For me, guys and girls. That act of noticing changed me so fundamentally. That act of really looking it right in the face with such raw, naked, obvious intention. It was life altering. It really was. And in hindsight, I don't know if it I would say it was brave, but it was definitely fucking scary. And it was definitely necessary. Because for me, what I was doing to myself was unsustainable. See, I was so actively busy in trying to not notice myself that I ran myself to the point that I had to notice myself. And I don't know if I pray that you get there or not. I hope you figure it out before you get there. Because that moment saved me, that moment changed me. That moment, you know, my melodramatic ass likes to think of it as the moment that my iron was pulled out of the fire and started hammering on the anvil. Because that's the moment where I took charge. And I lived through intention and not through reaction. Guys, most of us think we have a boundary problem. We don't. We're trying to protect a life that we never actually choose. And that's why it's always so hard to say no. Because you're not just pushing back on other people. You're pushing back on bullshit decisions that you never really made. And until you see that, nothing you do is going to feel right. Because you'll keep trying to fix things without questioning why the hell you're trying to fix them. You'll be carrying things without questioning why the hell am I carrying this? So, what do we do with this? We'll have to look at that next time. So, next time we're going to talk about what happens when we try to change that. What happens when we actually try to start holding that line in the real world? That's it for today. Take what's useful. Leave what's not. Choose and keep moving.
