Matthew eighteen one two and four reads At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Welcome to Between Sundays. Yesterday we considered the disciples' question from Matthew eighteen one. Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? It sounded spiritual, but the question revealed a dangerous spirit. They were thinking about position and rank. While Jesus was teaching humility, Jesus did not answer by naming the most gifted disciple. He did not give them a chart of kingdom rank. He called a little child, placed that child in their midst, and turned the question upside down. The child brought no resume, claimed no reputation, and demanded no recognition. The child simply stood where Jesus placed him. That living picture still corrects us. Pride is not always loud. Sometimes it merely demands to be noticed, consulted, or thanked. We may be close to the things of Christ while still quietly measuring our place among his people. The lesson to remember is simple. In Christ's kingdom, greatness is measured by humility. Jesus did not ask his disciples how high they could rise. He showed them how low they must become. Greatness is not making others feel small. Greatness is becoming low enough to receive and serve them in Christ's name. As you begin this week, remember the child standing in the middle. When you feel overlooked or your opinion is not followed, ask a better question. Do not ask, did they recognize me? Ask, did I reflect Christ? Do not ask, did I get my way? Ask, did I walk humbly with my Lord? The disciples asked, who was greatest? Jesus answered with a child. Let that answer remain in the middle of our thinking today. This is between Sundays, keeping the truth of God's word before us all week long.
