Matthew eighteen three to four reads and said, Verily I say unto you, except ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Welcome to Between Sundays Podcast. Today we want to understand what Jesus meant when he said that we must be converted and become as little children. Jesus was not praising childishness. The Bible never treats immaturity, selfishness, or lack of discernment as virtues. A childish person demands attention and insists upon his own way. A childlike person humbly depends upon another. The distinction matters because Jesus was confronting proud self-sufficiency. No person enters the kingdom of heaven on the strength of personal greatness. We do not come to God with a resume of merit. We come as needy sinners, unable to save ourselves. We humble ourselves before God and receive by faith what we could never earn. Salvation is not a reward for the impressive. It is the gift of grace received by the believing sinner. But the humility that brings a sinner to Christ must also mark the believer who follows Christ. We cannot begin by admitting that we need grace and then continue as though everyone else needs our greatness. The humility of conversion must become the humility of discipleship. This means that spiritual growth does not make us increasingly self-important. The more clearly we see Christ, the less reason we have to boast in ourselves. Maturity makes us more teachable, more thankful, more patient, and more willing to serve without recognition. We grow in conviction without growing in conceit. There is also a gospel comfort here. Christ receives those who come to him in humble faith. You do not have to make yourself great enough for Jesus. You must acknowledge that you are not. Turn from proud self-reliance, trust the Lord Jesus Christ who died for our sins and rose again. Receive the salvation that only He can give. Today, refuse childish self centeredness and choose childlike dependence. The greatest disciple is not the one who appears least needy, it is the one who knows his need of Christ and willingly takes the humble place. This is between Sundays, keeping the truth of God's word before us all week long.
