On this week's episode, Amanda and Bon review the first week of the 2026 season, make way too early predictions and give a 24 Shot Clock (and then some) on Jose Fernandez.

Welcome back to another episode of Chasing the W. I'm Amanda. And I'm Bonnie.

How's it going? It's going well. First week of uh the W season has been pretty all-consuming. I've watched a lot of basketball.

Amanda 0:24

Yeah, there's almost not I don't want to say too much basketball, but I'm having a hard time keeping up with this.

I know it's tough. Still learning everybody's team too. Keeping like, who's that? I don't know that person. It's like a combo of that, and like, when did this person join this team? Who I keep thinking that like Azare is still in LA. It's yeah, it's really tough. I don't know. She's on Chicago now.

She hasn't played yet, but yeah, I mean, really, like jumping right the fuck into it. Why not? So I think first let's talk about the Liberty. They had the first game, didn't they? They had the opening night game. And literally, Brenda and I got there and we were just like, when the fuck did we pick up Julie Van Loo?

I know. Like, literally, I think it was that morning.

It was like the same morning, a hardship contract because poor Julie Van Lou can't, they don't want to keep her on any teams. I would like to keep her on our team. I would love to keep her. She was incredible for us. She it was just like last season when she was picked up by the Sparks after being waived by the Valkyries while in flight to San Francisco. And then she flew into New York and was waiting outside the Qatar Airways entrance.

And then she played. That's so crazy.

20 minutes later, she was warming it up.

These last two seasons.

I think maybe that means that she was always meant to be in New York because then we picked her up. She flew in the same day and then damn near dropped a triple-double in her DP.

She was fucking phenomenal that game. She just like, I don't know.

She gives like just like a really hard-working player. Like she's willing to bust her ass and like get it done. And I really like that. And I feel like she's a good point guard option for us. I think so too. I mean, she had an incredible game. I'm pretty sure she had like 11 or 12 assists in that first game. It was really good. But as we're talking about the Liberty in general, I'm gonna be honest, we've talked a lot of shit about Chris DeMarco. That's his name, right? DeMarco. Yeah. Yep. And I hate to say it, you know, I don't like to be wrong. But I don't know.

We're pretty good. Like, unfortunately, Sabrina's out right now. Satzu's out. That's not really a surprise to me. I is Satu ever not out, respectfully. Respectfully, respectfully. Like, it's fine. And then also Beck Allen was out. And so we needed Julie Van Lu and Marine Johannes has been playing out of her mind. She really has. I think something we've talked about a lot before, too, on the pod is that she doesn't play as freely, in my opinion at least, as she does as she does in France. And I feel like that's a little bit different now, especially when she doesn't have to share the floor with Sabrina, just because they both are incredible three-point shooters, and so how do you kind of split up the number of shots?

But she has looked really good. And she's been in the weight room, I think.

Yeah, I think she's gotten stronger. Um, I don't know if her defense has gotten better, but we're we can work on it.

We well, the sample size is also not that much this season. We've only played four games.

True, true, true, true. Um, yeah, no, I feel like she's had some like crazy one-footer flying in the air, three-point shots.

She just like defies the law of gravity almost. Like, I don't know. It's like square shoulder wear. Yeah, she doesn't need to. No, she's been she's been playing really well. Also, we had the return of Bet Nija. Oh my god. Which, as we always say, she would never lie to you.

Yeah, I mean they said okay, and there's money to be spent. Yeah. They said it's time to go shopping. They probably went to that big ass Adidas because you know, but Nice is an Adidas athlete. But think to something something of note. Uh Stewie has not I mean Stewie is always good.

And she's had an incredible four games. The one thing, though, that's notable to me is that she has not been shooting efficiently from three.

Even when she's wide open, they are just not falling for her.

It's tough. Actually, oh geez, there is somebody in our section that I think I was talking to you about this person, but not sure if they're a regular season ticket holder because you know the Liberty schedule is all fucked up. We have one home game and then they run like a five or like a three-game like road trip. But she just like this person is so loud and animated with their commentary, but like almost kind of like berating. Like she was like yelling at the refs, but then she was like yelling at Stewie. What was she saying? Saying, stop shooting those threes, like you haven't hit a three like in two seasons.

Like something sounds like the girl that sits next to us.

It was just so obnoxious, and I was just like, This is this is not the place for that. This is not the M NBA. Yeah. Like, let's just let's just cool it.

Yeah, it's like literally literally not.

But also, Stewie's still like even though she's not shooting from three very well, like she's still put up.

She's playing well.

She's playing over 30 points, I think, in that first game.

Yeah, and at some point those shots will fall for her. So I don't think it's a huge deal. It's also been four games, and like the one thing that I've noticed in terms of like the flow of the game is that we're moving that fucking ball. Yeah. I like I found myself like really frustrated several times last season just watching our offense because it just felt so stagnant, like people were just kind of standing around. Just like, let's move, like, let's get open looks. But the ball movement has been really incredible, and I I have to attribute that to Chris DeMarco.

No, I agree, and I feel like we are we're playing more aggressive too. Like, yeah, ever everyone's kind of like driving in, kicking out, and but like it just feels like yeah, he's he's lit some fire under our ass.

Yeah, and honestly, sleeper pickup Pauline Astier literally was not familiar with your game, didn't know her at all. She has been cooking, she's just kind of like an injection of energy, I feel like, um, on on the offensive side, and I feel like she's a pretty solid defender as well, but she's just like getting to the rim, she's getting there in transition. She's also like I think her shot selection has been really good too. She's been like picking the right times to shoot and not just shooting for the sake of shooting.

So I think when Sabrina comes back that she should stay at the one. I'm just like curious. I because I just don't see Sabrina at the one. I mean, you know, she kind of was last year.

Amanda 8:01

Well, she was forced to do it because of slew. Yeah. Like, and I didn't think she did a I didn't think she did a bad job, but Sabrina's bread and butter, in my opinion, is catch and shoot. Right. So I think that would be more ideal for her. Um the last thing I'm gonna say about Chris DeMarco is man, like I was really, I feel like I was really wrong at knock on wood. Okay, because he better not piss me off. Because I just like there's a pre there was a press conference during or after one of their games, and we talked about this yesterday, but just like a really sweet moment between him and Bet Niger where he wasn't even looking at B sitting next to her, and he was like answering a question and taking off his sweater, and he just handed it to B.

Because she was like she just put it on had a tank tap on, hadn't like showered yet. I think must have been cold. Like, that's like I hate to say it. I like it.

Yeah, I guess I do I hate to say it.

I know because isn't that what we want? I think we wanted to like we were skeptical. I was I was really upset about Sandy, me too.

But but I think it kind of worked out for both sides. I think I think that it worked out like just look at the difference in how Martin is playing right now and how she's being utilized versus how she was how she's been utilized really the last like three seasons.

I know. Chris. It kind of makes me wonder what Chris would have done with Emma Misaman.

I don't know, man. I'm I I don't know that he could have made her pick put pick up that pep in her step. She was too slow to run with the girls. She was slow. Like, and that makes sense for some teams. It's just that we are we're runners, we're track stars. We are up and down at court.

Yeah. I'm also just like, I get it, but also you gotta pick up the pace if everybody else is kind of running. But in in Emma Me Simon's defense, she kind of came at a weird time. She did. Yeah. It was, I don't think, not the best fit for the team. So okay. Go libs. Yes, go libs. I I kind of wanted to talk about the scheduling as well. Yeah. Because we just talked about it briefly. Like we had one home game, then they were on like a three-game road trip, and then they're gonna be on a six-game homestand starting after like a week of nothing. Rest, yeah. So that's really annoying. And then also notably the Aces played uh against Phoenix and then had a back-to-back. And so then they played, I believe, LA the next day, which is like kind of crazy to me because a back-to-back to open the season is actually wild. Yeah, that seems like a lot. Yeah, so and they lost actually their first game, which was like 30 or something. It was something crazy. Kind of a large number, yeah. Kind of fun. You know, one of my faves, Kalia Copper, had a presser on Media Day, and she was being asked about, oh, does this game mean more to you because it's the team that you lost against? And you know, Kyle loves she loves a presser uh crash out. And she was like, Are y'all trying to piss me off? Like, of course. As a competitor, yes, we want to ruin their night. Like, we lost to them. We got swept. Like, yeah, don't piss me off. And she looks stunning while she said it.

There's one, I feel like I've said this before, but there's one Khalia Copper um presser that lives rent-free in my head. Do you know what it is?

Amanda 11:32

Is is it the one where she was just like why would you ask me that?

They were like, it was Candace, it was her and Candace Parker, so I think they were on the sky. So it was a few years ago. But um the journalist was like, How would you like uh I don't know, something about like Asia getting like eight blocks and like how did it feel to play against her? And then she like just stared at her them and was like, looked at Candace and was like, What was the question? Oh, actually.

I think it was it when was it when they said, What like do you think that you guys should have done this, this, this, and this or something like that? It was something really obvious.

Yeah, but it was like something about like how was it to play against Asia? Because because then Candace like repeated the question to her, and then Kyle just looked at them and goes, Good. Oh, actually, you know what?

Amanda 12:22

Yeah, that was a different moment. She's just like, she's an iconic press conference girly. Yeah, because there was another one where we're just like, Do you do you think that it was it wasn't this question exactly, but it was something so fucking dumb. Like, do you think they won or you lost? It wasn't that question, but it was something as dumb as that, and she was just like, Look at this. Now, what tell me what's wrong with this? Yeah, okay, cool. Like, because why why would you ask stupid questions?

Bonnie 12:49

Yeah, like so funny. I love that she's like just like I don't know.

That's a North Philly girly. Yeah, I mean, okay. Speaking of the aces, though, going back a little bit, mm-hmm. Kennedy Carter has been hooping hooping. I wow.

Bonnie 13:12

And they tried to keep her out the league. You know, I'm happy for her. I'm glad she's found a spot where she like fits and belongs and can be nurtured and yeah, we've talked about a good leadership on that team.

Amanda 13:24

I think it's gonna be really good for her, um, not just in her like development of her game, but also just like in how she's um just growing right as a player. So okay, and we talked briefly about like the aces and the liberty scheduling, but can we just talk about the scheduling in general? Because why why are there still like 17 games happening at the same time? Like Kathy has learned absolutely nothing.

Bonnie 13:51

I know. I feel like it shouldn't be that hard to figure it out, but like I'm sure there's a team dedicated to scheduling, like eight at least eight brains.

Amanda 14:01

Yeah, but I'm also just like it definitely can't be a thing that the CBA really delayed like the scheduling and stuff.

Bonnie 14:08

It should have been argued.

Because it's been like this this whole time.

Bonnie 14:11

Yeah, we already knew that like Toronto and Portland were gonna have expansion teams, like we already knew all that.

Amanda 14:18

Yeah, it's it's just not been great. Another thing that's been really frustrating is just how the games have been officiated these last couple, well, this last week. It's just been like a really tough watch slowing the games down.

Bonnie 14:33

Yeah. Do you want to get into the reps? I just wanted to say before we get into the reps, a couple week week opener data points. Oh so two and a half million viewers for the May 9th, Dallas versus Indiana game. That's the second most watched regular season game on ESPN. Tempo versus Mystics drew over a million Canadian viewers. Portland's home opener drew 19,335 fans, which is the largest crowd ever for an expansion team's home opener in the W history. So data shows that everyone actually does watch women's sports. You know? And that's that on that. And that's that. That's all I wanted to say.

I mean, those are pretty big points to make. I think it's like, man, it's like we said last episode, I think, or it's just like before I was kind of like, ugh, everybody wants a piece of the girls, and now I'm like, yes, everyone wants a piece of the girls. It's just fun, it's electric. It's also just like the style of play is just so much more engaging and exciting than ISO ball and the MNBA. Agree. It's so so good.

Let's talk about let's talk about the officiating.

Bonnie 15:51

Yeah, it's been horrible. It's been tough. It's been really tough. There's some sort of new rule or like emphasis on freedom of movement. So the league um has instructed officials to more strictly enforce the existing rules around hand checking, holding cutters, off-ball contact, paint physicality, illegal screens, displacement, and content contact on drives. But it just feels like every fucking second there's a whistle.

Amanda 16:22

It's it's honestly really tough. I feel like I've been seeing it a lot more on screening. Yeah. And sometimes I'm just like, okay, you guys, I get it, but that wasn't a fucking moving screen.

Bonnie 16:34

Yeah. Like, what are we doing? Right. And it's definitely slowing the games down. I feel like the players can't get into a flow. And I know they've complained about it on the pressers a bit too, but like a couple of the Liberty games I've watched um last week that started late, like, because they were in Portland, lasted for three hours. And I'm like, this is so long.

Honestly, really happy I didn't stay up to watch all of the games. I feel like I made it to halftime for both, and then I was I had to tap out. Yeah. It was also really bad during the Mystics and Liberty game, too. It was like, and I remember in the in the post-game presser, Stewie was just like, that was way too many fouls called because they went to OT with the Mystics, and there were just so, so many fouls called. Stewie said it was bad on both sides, not just like the Liberty getting a ton of, you know, a ton of fouls called against them. It was both sides.

Bonnie 17:32

Well, so I guess in the first 11 games, there was a total of 491 fouls called in all the games. 11 techs. Yeah. 11 technical fouls and four flagrants. And now the players um are having to pay new tech fines. So there's like $500 each for a player's first three tech fouls and then $500 per flight flagrant. So over the last 11 games in the first 11 games, players had to pay out $7,500.

Can we can we also just talk about because I know like both JJ and Stewie have publicly criticized all of the fouls being called? Yeah. Like you think about it, multiple games this season so far have been have crossed the 50 total fouls called. Mark. And if you I'm like trying to do like some quick math, just like thinking about how what is the distribution of fouls, and how have more players not fouled out?

Yeah, that's really true.

Because if you think about it, okay, what it's 12 players that are eligible to play, but not all 12 players are playing on both sides. So let's say total maybe you get 14 players. How are we distributing 50 fouls?

Bonnie 18:51

That's so crazy.

But 14 players, like that's a lot of fouls.

I feel like in that Mystics game, JJ and Han fouled out, right?

Yeah, I believe so. Yeah.

But I mean, I think that's true. We're gonna see more of that.

It's just interesting though, because it's there was no official rule change for it. Right. It like nothing changed about what legally constitutes a foul. There weren't any changes to the challenge rules, there was no changes to the verticality and definition of what contact is, and there was no limp like change to the foul limit.

It's just, I don't know, something that that I think made us laugh. It was during the home opener. I think I think it was during the home opener where you texted us and said, This is office fault. Yeah. You said this is on Nafees' fault. You said full government required for this. It feels like Nafisa's. Because of that fucking MPR interview. And then that end of season presser where she came in with her little Microsoft Word printout, and she said, first I would like to address the media.

Fuck you. No, that's not what she said. But I mean, that's pretty much what she said to Kathy.

So I mean, it feels like it like a weird coincidence that she went on. I don't know. I didn't know this was coming. I had no idea that this neither fucking rule rule change, non-rule change was coming. Like, for contrast, the average fall Fowl's called in a game last season was 17.5 a game.

Yeah. That's now we're at 50. Like what is the percentage increase for that? Also, 27.5. Also, notably, over over the offseason, apparently the WMBA created um an officiating task force where like it was following like all the widespread criticism from last season about not just the the physicality of play, but also the consistency. And so they also added referee performance oversight, expanded referee evaluation systems. They also promoted additional officials. Um, and they also have discussed replay and process improvements in addition to increased penalties for technical flagrance and flopping, which you mentioned briefly with the fines for techs, and now there's also a fine associated with flopping. Which I have yet to see it before. I know. Has Tip Hayes been on the floor? Has Tip Hayes been on the floor this season? I'm sure she has been.

You know what? She got hurt. Um I think she broke a finger or something. Was it because she threw herself on the floor? Respectfully. I think she's like out for a while. I haven't seen her playing. Um I'm gonna look it up really quick. Tiffany Hayes injury. Yeah, she dislocated her left pinky finger. Wee. Yikes. I mean she'll be back soon. But anyway, yeah, she'll be flopping again soon.

Yeah, and I think like there w like I said, there was no like official rule change to how foul fouls are called or and what constitutes a foul. But I think right now the whistle feels especially dramatic um because of this kind of weird adjustment period. But I'll tell you what, they need to figure it out.

Bonnie 21:58

But I know I really understand. And like everyone keeps saying it's an adjustment period, but like what are we adjusting to? Like, are players supposed to adjust to like the frequency of the flow fouls, or are the refs?

Amanda 22:12

Yeah, I think it's probably a mix of the two. So they're probably I guess like maybe what we would have considered like a ticky tack foul last season is probably like they're like, no, you need to call those and call them more consistently. But I also think that players will naturally adjust to it as well. Like, okay, like I really can't even do this little thing I got away with last season.

But at the same time, though, I historically, not just in the W, but when League tightens enforcement on foul calls like that, it's appear apparently pretty common for refs to overcall early. Players are playing physically out of habit. Like, you know, they're just trying to get used to it, but they need to figure it out soon because it's it's dragging the games out and it's like fucking up the flow of the game. It's not fun.

Bonnie 22:59

It's not fun. I also feel like the longer people play, the more likely they're gonna get injured. You know what I mean? Like because we're tired, we're playing longer. It just feels like I don't know. It's not good right now. The adjustment period needs to adjust quickly.

Yeah, especially man, I and as fans, it's annoying as fuck. I'm I'm gonna be honest, it's gonna be really fucking annoying during the six-game homestand when we're at Barclays every other fucking day, and then we're there until midnight because of all of the balls being called. Like it's kind of ridiculous. Yeah. Agree. Okay. Do you have any way too early takes based on what you've seen thus far from this really small sample size of games?

I have an early take. I do have an early prediction.

Um my two early prediction is Atlanta and Liberty in the finals. Mmm. I don't know who's gonna win, but I think we could be the la the final two.

To be honest, I've never really I have such a hard time with like predicting finals just because the league is still so small that like typically in other sports leagues you have like different conferences or different divisions, and so there's representatives from each. But I think it's it's possible, yeah I think, for there to be two teams from the east, but I'm not really like the seeding is very strange to me in the W. So I I don't know that I've like ever really fully grasped how it is that they work that out. So I think like the W is probably the only league where it's possible for two teams from the same conference to go at it against each other. Right? Because last season it was Aces and Mercury, and they're both in the West.

So I think that would be I think it would be tight. I feel like Atlanta has a really good team. I think so. And I'm pleasantly surprised with how we're playing right now, especially without Sabrina and Satsu.

Okay. Well, speaking of Atlanta, we did just catch the second half of their game today against the aces, and they were down almost 20 points, I think, when we turned it on. There were maybe like six minutes left in the third, and they really rallied. Yeah. They looked so good. Shout out to to pow pow.

That's my girl. Pow pow pow bang. She was doing great. Angel was doing great. Nas great. I mean, they didn't even have Ryan out there, and they were looking really, really good. They were looking really good.

Pow pow was shooting really efficiently from the three. In fact, a lot of her shots were wet. A lot of her shots were wet. One could say they were wet. Wet? You wet. Yeah, you wet. That was it. Um, no, she was doing good, and I especially love that because she's on my fantasy team. And I really needed her to have a breakout performance because Christina's up on me by like 30 points. And she's smiling through it all. And she's smiling through it all. She can't believe this is her life. She can't. Shout out, shout out to her. Okay, okay.

Two way too early predictions. First of all, Cam Brink for defensive player of the year. Okay.

She is a walking block party. I mean, I feel like everyone and their mom reshared that block she had on Caitlin. Oh my god.

But the I think the best part of that block wasn't even the block itself, it was the flex after, and she said, get that fucking shit out of here. And then she chest bumped Erica Wheeler into the fucking abyss. She just like boom and she was gone. I saw it from a different angle too. It was really funny. Erica Wheeler literally was caught by the crowd and they pushed her back in. Like it was fucking rock chiller. It was incredible. And then, like two days later, Cam had a block pretty much in that same exact spot in the same exact way. I was just like, ooh, yeah, she said, not in this house. I don't think so. Did you not see what I did the other day? I love that for her because I do feel like I don't know. I feel like in the ether where Cam Brink is discussed, I feel like it's been a lot of like, well, I haven't really seen her play. Right. What is it? And I've always believed in her. It's not her fault that she tore her ACL.

And I think it's gonna be Rakia Jackson. Oh shit. She has been hooping. She won big dog of the game two games in a row in Chicago. Okay. She the last game she played, she had 29. I think she I don't think she was approaching triple double, but she might have had a double double. But she had 29 points. And I just feel like I feel like Lynn Roberts was holding her back.

Right. And he didn't like I feel like oftentimes I'm watching games and I'm just like oh you need a timeout here. They need to settle they need to reset and he didn't do it. So he sucks. It sounds like it's on him because respectfully like unless you've got someone like that's a high volume shooter like a Caitlin who is actually shooting you out of the game like you win by the coach or you lose by the coach coaching is very important and you and oh it was the links it was the links that they played against and then the narrative became oh number two pick Olivia Miles beat number one pick AZ Food first of all it's a team sport. Yeah Olivia did not beat AZ right and AZ like she had a decent game also I just she did play really well I watched it I just don't understand why she's coming off of the bench I feel like why are you playing her and playing yourself? Yeah so whatever man I I really hope to see some improvements. I kind of want him to come out and be like hey sorry he did the moment yeah he should he should he definitely should because I mean even when they were sitting on the bench it was very reminiscent of man bun coaching last season when he was like calling a play and the players were looking at him like what the fuck so I don't know uh I really hope that he turns it around because I just don't think that was cool.
