Sometimes all it takes is a small detour to remember what we’ve been missing.
In this first episode of Mom Life in the Woods, you’ll see how a quiet, unexpected moment became the heart behind this podcast — a spontaneous stop at a wooded park, the sound of leaves and birds, the simple joy of swinging on a playground as an adult, and the realization that life doesn’t need more noise or more hours… it needs more moments like this.
This episode is an invitation to slow down and notice the beauty already surrounding you — the air, the light, the rhythms of nature, and the simple pleasures that often get overlooked in busy mom life. You’ll reflect on how easy it is to rush from place to place without ever truly experiencing the outdoors, even when it’s right outside our doors, and how reconnecting with nature can ground us not only outside, but inside our homes as well.
You’ll hear about:
- Why small, ordinary moments can feel richer than big, planned ones
- How slowing down can bring more joy without adding anything to your to-do list
- The connection between outdoor awareness and a more peaceful home life
- Finding beauty and intention in every stage of motherhood, from raising little ones to parenting grown kids
This episode sets the tone for Mom Life in the Woods: a place for moms who want to live more intentionally, create meaningful moments with their families, and find calm, joy, and a little sparkle in everyday life — right where they are.
Take a breath, step outside, and walk with us.

last month I was driving home from a Mercy Me concert. They're a Christian band I like to listen to sometimes on KSBJ. And I took a detour and drove into Lake Houston Wilderness Park for the very first time. I haven't heard about it before, but this was my first time stopping. I wasn't there long, but in my short time there, guys, being surrounded with only the sounds of nature, I felt the air shift, the sound of leaves, the smell of pines and
⁓ all that sunshine. There are butterflies and they have a little butterfly garden there. So lots of butterflies. There are bees. There's a beautiful lake or maybe it's a pond. I don't know how to tell the difference. All kinds of trees, animal noises. It was beautiful. It was quiet. ⁓ There were no people sounds. It was just the nature sounds. And in that moment, everything felt so rich.
I was with my older child, my oldest child. She's 20, so practically a grownup and there was nobody else around. So we did what any other mother daughter duo would do. We hit the playground and got on those swings. Y'all, my dress was a little bit too short for it, but you know what? We were the only ones there. So we went up and down two grown women enjoying the outdoors on a swing that was seemingly in the middle of nowhere. And in those moments,
I remembered. This is what I need more of. Not necessarily more hours in the day, although, you know, society might tell us that we do. Not more noise, not more inspiration or input, just more moments of simple pleasure, of beauty, of awareness, slowing down without overdoing it. More pauses to look around and notice nature, spontaneous moments, as well as
the well-planned moments of simple adventure and childlike bliss. That moment on those swings became the heart behind this podcast.
Let me ask you something. Have you ever gone through a day or maybe even a series of days where you didn't have a clue what the outdoors was like? Our area is famous for trees, nature everywhere, flowers, trees, deer, opossums. It sounds so, I grew up saying possums, but opossums, colorful birds. But as moms, if we're not careful, we will go into our vehicle, our minivan, whatever we're driving.
go into the garage, get in our vehicles, rush from Target to Trader Joe's to the carpool line to soccer practice and never once even have an inkling of how the air outside really feels. I mean, maybe we're going from the parking lot into HEB, but are we lingering? We're not really thinking about the trails or the lakes or the green spaces that surround us every day. Dude, we are lucky we live in such a great
area, you know, sometimes we get so busy we don't even know what the weather's like for the day. And that's sad because connecting with the outdoors is holistic. It helps us stay grounded and it even helps us stay grounded in the things that we do indoors. And by the way, I used to be that mom to some degree, you know, I would rush through the day and have so many things to do, but I would never really linger outdoors. And thankfully I've shifted. It's been a while and
boy, does the change feel good? I wake up, I can't wait to open the shutters. The first thing I really do is go into the kitchen most days. I turn on the tea kettle and I open the shutters right over the kitchen sink because I wanna see outdoors. I wanna go through the house and open shutters. We have shutters in some rooms, blinds in other rooms. I can't wait to invite the sunlight in. There are plants outside that need to be watered. And you know, if we're being honest, I kind of saved that for my kiddos, but.
But I just love having that connection with the outdoors. There are spinach and tomato frittatas to make. There's tea to brew. There's coffee to brew. There's when I'm driving in my minivan these days, most times it's music off, windows down. Let's feel the breeze or maybe it's music off and let's have a conversation with the kids. Mom Life in the Woods is about making that spark, creating joy in simple things, the simple things right here where we live.
It's about ⁓ not just, okay, I'm inspired, I wanna do this. It's about experiencing this on a consistent basis, daily, not just some random times throughout the year and we finally decide to slow down a little bit. I believe that life can be so memorable and fun and beautiful and inspiring every single day if we are intentional about it.
If you're new here, hi again. And I mean, why wouldn't you be new here? It's my first episode, but maybe you know me from WoodlandsMommy.com. I am the founder, editor in chief of WoodlandsMommy.com. I started it back in 2006 as a way to connect local moms and share family friendly happenings. And it has grown into this wonderful community that I'm so proud of. My husband and I have been raising our four daughters under these tall Texas trees in these warm, sticky
unforgivingly hot, but nonetheless beautiful Houston suburbs. We homeschool our girls range from age 11 to 20. My oldest finished up her undergrad degree and she's back home with us right now. And like many of you moms, I'm balancing a lot of different stages of motherhood at once. I've learned that no matter what stage, the baby stage, the tween stage, the third...
grown but still need a little bit of cash transferred into their account from time to time stage. We all crave connection, calm, and yes, a little bit of wonder That's what mom life in the woods is meant to be. A bit of connection, a bit of calm, some sparkle thrown in, and some fun ways to experience that in real life on your journey. Here's what you can expect to give you
just a little bit of an idea of this podcast. We're going to talk about
soulful tea times. could be peeling sweet potatoes in the kitchen, slowing down enough to do that, to listen to fun songs, to learn a line dance as a family, eating in the formal dining room, not just for Thanksgiving. We're going to talk about rainy day pleasures, growing rosemary for that so delicious and easy focaccia recipe.
Sipping pomegranate tea on the back porch, lighting candles around the house.
Story times. I'm not talking about just because you have toddlers. I'm talking about story times even for
the big kids, even for your husband, conversations, adding a little lavender on everybody's pillow before bedtime. We're going to, maybe we'll explore some of the local trails and areas of the woodlands and beyond. We're going to talk about what to wear, what to bring along, how to make an ordinary stroll into a grounding, enriching experience.
And one moment at a time, we're going to create a beautiful life for our families, for ourselves, for our kids, no matter what their ages are, birth to adult kids, our partners.
My desire is for every week you'll leave this podcast feeling encouraged and excited to bring some classic sparkle into your home. Excited to just know that at the end of the day, you've accomplished the mission of adding richness and tenderness and awareness.
because savoring these things does not happen by accident.
So here's my gentle invitation to you for today. Step outside, even if it's just the backyard, take a deep breath and notice something. The sound of a bird.
the rustle of the leaves, the way the air fills on your face. And also tonight, pull out your face exfoliator. You know, the one you brought, it paid $75 for, couldn't wait to get it. You saw all the reels and reviews on TikTok. It smells like lemon and honey. It feels kind of minty. That one, you couldn't wait to get it. You got it, use the ones and you put it away. No, tonight, pull your hair back, wash your face, use that face scrub, finish off with a great moisturizer.
Enjoy that sweet moment of goodness before you put on your pajamas, not your sweatpants, but your cozy pajamas, the matching top, the matching bottom, and say your prayers before getting into bed. Life doesn't have to be a blur. Even if you're a busy mom, and I know you are a busy grandma, a corporate executive, there's time. because there's beauty waiting right where you are. If you slow down long enough to see it, to create it.
I'm so happy that you're here and I can't wait to walk this path together.
