#19: Build the Rhythm That Protects Your Focus
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this week’s episode of The NovaCo Podcast, April Nova Scipio continues the May series, Focus, with a conversation about the rhythms that protect your peace, clarity, and consistency.
Because focus is not something you find once.
It’s something you build daily.
Many women are not struggling because they lack purpose or passion. They are struggling because they are trying to sustain clarity without structure.
And without healthy rhythms, distractions quickly return.
In this episode, we talk about:
- Why peace is connected to rhythm and order
- How your daily habits shape your focus
- The importance of protecting time with God
- Why consistency matters more than intensity
- How to build sustainable rhythms that support your spiritual growth
If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, inconsistent, distracted, or out of alignment, this episode will encourage you to simplify your routines and rebuild with intention.
You do not need a perfect routine.
You need rhythms that help you stay connected to God, grounded in peace, and focused on what matters most.

So I know we have a lot to do every single day, but it's like, what's the one thing I want to focus on today? What of all of my priorities, what's the most important? So for me, when I'm looking at my schedule and I'm creating that and I'm looking at my to-do list, I'm like, okay, what are my my what are my top three things I need to do today? Welcome back to the NovaCo podcast. This is a faith-filled lifestyle podcast for women who desire clarity, peace, and alignment in their everyday lives. I'm your host, April Nova Scipio. So excited you're joining today. Whether you're here for the first time or you've been listening for a while, so glad you're here. I want to not only welcome you to the podcast, but I want to welcome you into our entire community. We are Nova Community. We hang out on an app called Mighty Networks. And so come over, hang out with us. There is space for you. You can click on the link in the show notes of this episode and get connected. We are in a series this month about focus. Last week, well, let me start with the first week. The first week of this month, we've talked about the importance of hearing God clearly, right? So if we want to focus on what we need to be doing, we first need to hear from God what we need to be doing, right? So it has to start there. But then after that, we have to make sure our attention is on the right thing. And that's what we unpacked last week, all about attention and how when we divide our attention, it creates instability. And so if you missed either of those episodes, go back and listen, get caught up. But today we're talking about rhythm, building rhythms that protect our focus, protect what we heard, right? It's like we're aware what God said, we're aware of, you know, where our attention should be, what boundaries we need to put in place. And now let's put some structure to it. Let's let's decide, okay, how do I protect what I'm building, protect my focus, protect my attention. So I'm excited. Get your journal. I'm gonna have some things for you to write down today and some things for you to pray into to see how you want to execute them in your life. That's what this is about. When we apply these things in our lives, we get to experience life change. Now, as we've been journeying through focus, I am learning more and more about focus and the fact that it's not something you just find, it's something you build. And the way you build focus is through momentum, it's through rhythm, it's through doing these things repetitively so that your clarity doesn't fade and your distractions don't return. Because without rhythm, that's exactly what happens, right? Have you ever had a moment when you you like you were so clear? You knew everything I was saying, you were aligned, you were focused, and then a few days later, you were right back in distraction. You were right back in the inconsistency. Okay, yes, me, April, Nova, Scipio. I have been there. But here's the thing we didn't go back to distraction and inconsistency because we didn't hear God. We went back because we didn't have anything in place to protect what we heard, to protect the focus, to protect the momentum. And so that's what we're gonna talk about today. First Corinthians 14, 33. It says, for God is not a God of disorder, but of peace, as in all the meetings of God's holy people. Now, in context, we know here Paul is talking about, you know, being having order in a worship gathering, but God He is going to want order in everything. He is a God of order, right? And so we're gonna look at just some things today, or really talk through some things today that's gonna help us create and maintain this order that we desire. And the best part is that order brings peace. I love that part. I'm like, thank you, God. Thank you that peace is not just some random thing that I may have or I may not have. No, I get peace from God. I can have things in my life to protect my peace. And as I desire that in my life, I know my part is just creating the proper rhythms. And so here's the first thought I want you to write down in your journal today. Clarity without rhythm will not last. Clarity without rhythm will not last. You can hear God clearly and still drift, right? We can feel aligned and we can still lose focus because we don't have the structure to hold it in place. So clarity is a moment, right? But rhythm is what sustains it. Sometimes we have a great morning, but then we don't follow through in the rest of our day. Sometimes we start off, we have the strong prayer time, and then we get distracted as we continue through the things that we have going on. We have clear direction sometimes, but then the action is inconsistent. And so that's what we're kind of getting away from. We know that the rhythm is needed so that the clarity can last. All right. The second thing I want you to write down in your journal is this your daily rhythm shapes your focus. Your daily rhythm shapes your focus. Your life is shaped by intention, but then also it's shaped by what you do every day, right? So what you return to every single day, that is what you become consistent in. That's how you build your rhythm, how you start your morning, how you transition your day, going from one thing to the next, where your attention goes constantly. These are examples of things that build the rhythm that you desire, right? And the reason why this is important is because if every single day we don't reflect what God said, then ultimately our lives are not going to reflect what God said. And so we want to return to the things to start our day, return to how we transition our day, return to where our attention goes every single day. This is a long-term thing, you guys. This is not a one and done, let me check it off the list and I'm good. No, this is every single day saying, God, today, the day is yours. And God, I'm gonna start my day locked in on what you have for me. Let you letting you lead me and guide me throughout my day. Father, help my attention be on the right things. And I I need I need to do that every single day. Okay, so it's your daily rhythm that shapes your focus. The next thing I want you to write down in your journal is this keep your rhythm simple and sustainable. Simple and sustainable. A lot of people don't struggle with starting a rhythm, but they struggle with sustaining the rhythm because they're simply just trying to do too much. So when I say, you know, create a rhythm, I'm definitely not saying that you need this perfect routine, but you need a repeatable system, a repeatable rhythm. So I'm gonna give you just a practical three-part daily rhythm framework that you can take and make it your own, but I at least want to give you just a place to start. So here's a great three-part daily rhythm. Number one, time with God, right? That's the listening piece. I want to listen to what God is telling me every single day. Number two, one focus priority, right? That's our action. Then when I look at those top three things, I'm still saying, okay, God, what's my focus today? Because I got to make sure I act on that. All right. So it's like one focus priority. And then the third part is pause and reflect. That's the realign piece. So it's like listen, act, realign. Listen, act, realign. That's what we're doing every single day. I'm listening. What's God saying? I'm acting. I'm I'm doing that one focused thing. And then I'm realigning. I'm pausing and reflecting. Okay, God, is this what I should be doing? Is this what you said? Do my actions match my intention? And I'm doing that three-part rhythm every single day. And that's repeatable. Listen, act, realign. Listen to God, act on what he said, realign. Let me pause and reflect, right? Making sure I don't drift. Okay. Having a simplified rhythm is just so so key. And one rhythm that I established so many years ago, I don't even know how many years now, it's been a long time. Um, in the morning, you know, I take a scripture and I iron the scripture out. And the way that I do it has evolved a little bit over the years, but it's definitely the definitely the same concept. And I am sharing that with you guys very, very soon. I'm not gonna go in it now, but it's the way it's a rhythm that helps me engage with scripture, and so I'm excited to share that with you guys very, very soon. I'm having the Nova journal come out very, very soon, and it's a part of that. And so I'm just doing a little plug. So be on the lookout for the Nova journal because it is just a rhythm that really just helps me engage with scripture every single day. And now, because I'm engaging with scripture every single day with a repeatable rhythm, right? Now that's helping me apply the scripture in my life, and now I'm seeing consistent results. So I'm excited to share that with you guys. But whatever you want to be consistent in in your life, create a simple, repeatable rhythm. I want it, I wanted to make sure that I engaged with scripture every single day. So that's why I created that repeatable rhythm. You do the same for your life, right? And when we do this, it's not that everything's gonna change overnight because we did it like one time. It changes because we stayed consistent with less, right? Stayed consistent with less. So in your journal this week, I want you to answer these questions. What part of my day lacks structure right now? What part of my day lacks structure right now? Next question. Where am I inconsistent? Where am I inconsistent? And then the last question, what simple rhythm can I commit to this week? What simple rhythm can I commit to this week? So I'm excited. We are this week going to create simple, sustainable rhythms in one area where we want to be more consistent in. So here's our declaration today. Say this after me. I am consistent, I build my life with intention. My daily rhythm supports what God has called me to do. And I'm so excited for us because we're building something that will last. I want to pray for us today. I'm gonna pray that God reveals to us where we're doing too much, where the rhythm needs to scale back, and it's it's gonna be in a way now that's simple so we can repeat it and protect our focus. So let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank you so much for today. And this reminder, Lord, that we don't have to have this long routine happening. It's the simple, repeatable rhythms that help us to be consistent. So, Father, I thank you for helping us to develop our consistency muscle, to help us to be focused. And Lord, thank you that there's grace in the process. Father, our heart is to align our faith in our daily lives. So, Lord, help us not just to hear you in the mornings, but hear you throughout the day. Lead us and guide us. Father, thank you that you love us and your plan for us is good. So, Lord, we just commit our rhythms to you. Help us to refine them and to realign them in Jesus' name. Amen. Amen, you guys. Don't try to overhaul your whole life this week. I feel like I needed to say that because that would be me. I would this would be me. I would hear this episode and I would be like, oh my gosh, I need a simple, repeatable rhythm in the 150 areas of my life where I'm needing more consistency. Okay, I'm not saying that. I'm saying choose one. Choose one rhythm, stay with it, let it, let it shape your focus. All right. Next week, we're closing out the series. You don't want to miss it. We're gonna be talking about how we finish what God told us to start. We're gonna be finishers next week. So you don't want to miss it. Subscribe to the podcast so you don't miss any episodes. Share this out, share out on socials. You guys tag me at April Nova Scipio. I would appreciate that. And I'm looking forward to hanging out with you this week in Nova Community. If you haven't joined Nova Community, click the link and join us today. And then also check out Retreat. Retreat is coming up, Labor Day weekend. It's the third annual prayer retreat, you guys. It's so beautiful. And people are like, prayer retreat. You guys just sit around and pray all day. We don't. There is prayer involved, but man, it's just a special time with the Lord. It's a real encounter where God is downloading things to us and we're getting clarity and vision and encouragement and built up and strengthened. And it is like no other experience. I can't wait. If you want to be in the room, click on the link in the description of this podcast in the show notes and be a part of what we have going on.
