Why would Jesus heal someone—and then tell them not to tell anyone?
In this episode of FaithFuel, Bob Shaw explains a moment in the Gospels that can feel confusing at first. Jesus wasn’t hiding who He was—He was working with purpose and timing.
This episode brings clarity to that moment and helps you better understand how God works in ways we don’t always expect.
Why would Jesus heal someone and then tell them not to tell anyone about it? I'm Bob Shaw, and this is Faith Fuel. If you've read the Gospels, this might have caught your attention before. Jesus heals someone, changes their life completely, and then says, Don't tell anyone. And you read that and you're like, why would he say that? Mark 1, verses 43 to 45. Then Jesus sent him on his way with a stern warning, Don't tell anyone about this. But the man went and spread the word, proclaiming to everyone what had happened. And because of that, the next line says Jesus could no longer enter towns openly. So why would Jesus say, Don't tell anyone? It wasn't because he was hiding, and it wasn't because he didn't want people to believe. It was because he was controlling the message. If word spread too fast or in the wrong way, people would focus on the miracles and miss the reason he came. Some already wanted a political leader, others just wanted to see what he would do next. But Jesus came to deal with sin, to bring salvation, and he wasn't going to let the mission get reduced to the miracle guy. Now here's the part that raises another question. Jesus knew this man would go tell everyone anyway, so why say it at all? Because Jesus still says what is right, even when people don't respond the right way. He gave a clear instruction. The man chose not to follow it. And that decision had real consequences. Jesus could no longer move freely. So this isn't just about timing. It's also about obedience. Jesus wasn't surprised, but he was still intentional. And that brings it back to us. We don't always understand why God says wait or not yet, or even don't, but those instructions are never random. They're tied to something bigger than what we can see. And trusting him means trusting that he knows what he's doing, even when we don't. Lord, thank you that you always work with purpose and intention. Help us trust you, even when we don't fully understand what you're doing, and give us the willingness to follow you, not just when it's easy, but when it stretches us. In Jesus' name. Amen. This is one of those things people don't always think about, so feel free to pass it along if someone comes to mind. Follow the Faith Fuel with Bob Shaw podcast wherever you listen. For clear, scripture based encouragement you can carry into your day. Until next time, peace and joy.
