Can You Really Say Anything to God?

Prayer can feel intimidating. A lot of people think they need the right words, the right tone, or the right mindset before they come to God. So instead of being honest, they hold back.
In this episode of FaithFuel, Bob Shaw reminds you that God already knows what’s going on in your life—He knows you better than you know yourself. Looking at Psalm 62:8, this devotional shows how David poured out everything to God, even when his emotions were raw and sometimes off-base. Over time, those honest prayers led to a change in perspective.
Romans 8:26 reminds us that the Holy Spirit helps when we don’t have the words, and Hebrews 4:16 encourages us to come boldly. This episode is a reminder that prayer isn’t about performance—it’s about relationship.
If you’ve ever felt like you had to clean things up before talking to God, this episode will help you approach Him differently.
I always appreciate hearing from you—feel free to reach out.

Do you ever feel like you have to have the right words before you pray? Like you've got to sound a certain way? You don't. I'm Bob Shaw, and this is Faith Fuel. Prayer can feel intimidating for a lot of people, like you need the right words or the right tone, the right mindset before you come to God. So instead of being honest, you hold back. You filter what you say. You try to sound more put together than you really are, but that's not what prayer is. Psalm 62 verse 8 says to pour out your heart before Him. That's pretty direct. Just pour it out. When you look at David in the Psalms, he didn't hold anything back. He brought everything to God fear, anger, doubt, frustration. There are times when he's confused, times where he's hurting, times where he's asking hard questions. It's one of the reasons David is my favorite person in the Bible. He was so raw. He didn't try to clean it up or sound spiritual. He just brought it. He set the example for us. And if you read closely, some of the things he prayed for weren't right. He was speaking out of emotion. He was reacting in the moment. But that wasn't the point. He was pouring out his heart before God. And you see something else happen too. A lot of those prayers start one way and end another. He comes in angry or overwhelmed, and by the time he's done, his perspective has changed. That's what bringing things to God does. And God didn't shut that down. He didn't tell him to come back later. He met him right there. And that's the invitation for you too. You don't have to come to God with polished words. You don't have to pretend you're stronger than you are. You don't have to filter what you're feeling. You can bring it as it is. And here's the thing. God already knows what's going on in your life. He knows what you're thinking and what you're feeling. He knows you better than you know yourself. So you're not telling him anything new. You're bringing it to him. And when you don't know what to say, you're not on your own. Romans 8 verse 26 says, The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes for us when words fail. Even when you can't put it into words, God still hears you. When all you've got is frustration, confusion, or silence, He knows. Hebrews 4.16 says we can come boldly to Him. Because this isn't about performance. It's about relationship. And in a real relationship, you don't have to hide or pretend. You just bring it. Lord, thank you that we come to you as we are. Help us stop holding back and trying to sound a certain way. Teach us to be honest with you, even when it's messy or hard to put into words. And remind us that you hear us, understand us, and meet us right where we are. In Jesus' name. Amen. If you've been holding back in prayer, try something different today. Just talk to God like you would to someone who already knows you. And if you want to keep growing in your faith day by day, follow Faith Fuel and stay grounded in God's truth. I'm Bob Shaw. Peace and joy.
