Did God Change in the Old and New Testament?
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
When you read the Old Testament and the New Testament, it can feel like you’re seeing two different versions of God—one focused on judgment, the other on grace.
In this episode of FaithFuel, Bob Shaw brings clarity to that question. Anchored in Malachi 3:6 and Hebrews 13:8, this devotional shows that God hasn’t changed—His character has always been consistent.
The difference is in how we see His justice and mercy revealed. In the Old Testament, we see sin addressed directly. In the New Testament, we see that same justice and mercy come together through Jesus and the cross.
This episode will help you understand the Bible as one continuous story—and give you confidence in the unchanging nature of God.
I always appreciate hearing from you—feel free to reach out.

You read the Old Testament and the New Testament, and it can feel like you're seeing two different versions of God. I'm Bob Shaw, and this is Faith Fueled. It can be confusing. You read the Old Testament and you see judgment, laws, consequences. Then you get to the New Testament and it feels different. Grace, mercy, love. It can feel like two different versions of God. Malachi 3, verse 6 says, I am the Lord, and I do not change. That settles it. God is the same in both testaments. He hasn't changed. And right now you're thinking, Yeah, Bob, that should settle it. So why am I still feeling unsettled? I get it. So let me try to help. In the Old Testament, God is establishing his standard. He's showing what sin is and how serious it is. You see judgment because sin is being dealt with directly. But God's mercy is there too. You see it again and again. He shows patience, he restores, he forgives. Then you get to the New Testament and you see Jesus. And now you're seeing the same God, but in a way that's personal. The cross is where it all comes together. God's justice didn't go away. It was satisfied. And at the same time, his mercy made a way for us to be forgiven. That's not a different God. That's the same God showing both sides of who he is at the same time. Hebrews 13 verse 8 says Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. From beginning to end, God is consistent. He's just, so sin is taken seriously. He's loving, so he made a way to deal with it. And when you see the Bible that way, it's not two separate stories, it's one story. Lord, thank you that you do not change. Help us understand your word more clearly and see who you are from beginning to end. Thank you for your justice and thank you for your mercy. Help us trust you more as we grow in our understanding of who you are. In Jesus' name, Amen. If this has ever been confusing, keep looking at Scripture as one complete picture of who God is. For more encouragement like this, follow Faith Fuel and keep it part of your day. I'm Bob Shaw. Peace and joy.
