Why do so many of us pray last instead of first?

In this episode of FaithFuel with Bob Shaw, Bob talks about how easy it is to rely on ourselves first—trying to fix problems, overthink situations, and carry stress alone—before finally turning to God in prayer.

Looking at Philippians 4:6 and 1 Thessalonians 5:17, this devotional encourages believers to stop treating prayer like an emergency backup plan and start making it part of everyday life.

Because prayer was never meant to be the last thing we do when everything falls apart. It’s meant to be part of walking with God daily.

Why is prayer usually the last thing we turn to instead of the first? I'm Bob Shaw, and this is Faith Fuel. I think a lot of us treat prayer like the emergency glass you break only when things get really bad. When life feels manageable, we tend to rely on ourselves, our planning, our experience, our ability to fix things. Then something happens that's bigger than us: a health scare, a broken relationship, financial pressure, a situation we can't control no matter how hard we try. And suddenly, prayer moves right up to the top of the list. And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that to shame anybody. Sometimes I don't even think to pray right away. I start trying to figure things out myself first. I think most of us do that more often than we realize. The strange thing is, most of us know prayer is important. We believe in it. We tell other people we'll pray for them. But in everyday life, prayer can become more reactive than relational. And I don't think God ever intended prayer to work that way. Philippians four six Don't worry about anything. Instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank Him for all He has done. Notice what it doesn't say? Pray after you've exhausted yourself. Pray after your anxiety takes over. Pray after you've stayed up half the night overthinking everything. No, it says pray about everything, the big things and the small things. The family issue, the job situation, the meeting you're nervous about, the decision you keep going back and forth on, the stress you keep carrying around like a backpack full of bricks. A lot of us want prayer to be the final piece after we've already tried handling everything ourselves first. But prayer was never designed to be a backup plan. It's part of walking with God daily. Praying first requires trust. Most of us would rather figure things out ourselves before bringing it to God. We want answers immediately. We want control. We want to feel like we're doing something productive. And sometimes prayer feels too simple. And deep down, even though we'd probably never admit it out loud, part of us wonders if prayer really works. But prayer is not doing nothing. It brings the situation to the one who already knows every detail about it. That doesn't mean God instantly fixes every problem the second we pray. Sometimes that happens and we can give glory to God for that, but usually it doesn't work that way. But prayer changes something in us. It reminds us we're not carrying life alone. 1 Thessalonians 5.17. Never stop praying. It means prayer becomes part of your relationship with God throughout the day. You talk to Him while driving, while worrying, while making decisions, sitting in a waiting room, trying not to lose your patience with difficult people. The truth is, we build habits into our lives every single day, some good, some not so good. And over time, those habits become routine. Prayer can become that too. The more you pray throughout your day, the more natural it becomes. Eventually, talking to God becomes less like a formal religious exercise and more like breathing, not forced, not awkward, just part of your everyday walk with Him. And maybe that's what some of us need to relearn. Instead of treating prayer like the last option when life falls apart, start there. Before the panic, before the spiral, before the overthinking wears you out. Bring it to God first. Lord, thank you that we never have to carry life by ourselves. Forgive us for the times we rely on our own understanding first and only come to you after we've exhausted ourselves. Teach us to bring things to you earlier instead of later. Help us remember that prayer is not just for emergencies, but part of walking with you every day. For those carrying anxiety right now, for those overwhelmed by decisions or trying to fix everything alone, bring peace, wisdom, and comfort today. And help us trust you more instead of leaning completely on ourselves. In Jesus' name, amen. Hey, thanks for listening. And you can follow Faith Fuel with Bob Shaw wherever you listen to podcasts.
