I used to spend so much time thinking about what I was gonna pray that I barely heard anybody else's prayers. I'm Bob Shaw, and this is Faith Fuel. Let's begin with Matthew 6 7. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. I remember sitting in prayer groups years ago, and instead of listening to what everybody else was praying, I'd be mentally working on my own prayer. How should I start? What should I say? How do I make this sound right? Am I alone in that? I mean, I'd be writing and rewriting my prayer in my head while everybody else was talking to God. And then of course, inevitably, somebody would pray the exact thing I was planning to pray. And I'd think, well, there goes my prayer. And I still catch myself doing that from time to time. It's a hard habit to break. In fact, I'm one of the elders at my church, and on the first Monday of every month, we have a prayer night. The prayer team and the elders come up front and pray with people who come forward. And I'll tell you, that's still a little nerve-wracking for me. There is no room to think about what you're gonna pray. They've just told you their prayer requests, so the horses are already at the starting line. And I'm an introvert, so standing in front of people doesn't come naturally to me anyway. But the bigger issue is that prayer is serious business. When somebody comes to you carrying a burden, you want to do them justice. You want them to leave feeling well prayed for. And yes, somewhere in the back of my mind, I'm also hoping I remembered a breath mint. Well, I think part of the reason praying out loud can feel intimidating is because we become aware that other people are listening, and suddenly we're thinking about the words instead of who we're talking to. I'm sure you've been in groups where somebody prayed for several minutes, maybe ten minutes, and every word sounded immaculate, polished, eloquent, perfect, and you're sitting there thinking, How am I supposed to follow that? The good news is that God is not sitting in heaven grating prayers. Jesus never taught his followers to impress people when they prayed. In fact, he warned against turning prayer into something that draws attention to ourselves. And Romans 8 verse 26 says, There are times when we don't even know what we ought to pray. Think about that a second. Even the Bible acknowledges that we don't always have the words. That should bring a little relief. Prayer isn't about finding the perfect thing to say. It's about talking to your heavenly father. When my kids were little, I never expected them to speak perfectly before I'd listen to them. I just wanted them to talk to me. How much more does our heavenly father feel that way about us? So if praying out loud makes you nervous, don't let that stop you. The people around you probably aren't paying nearly as much attention to your wording as you think they are. And God certainly isn't. He's listening to his child. Lord, thank you that we don't have to come to you with perfect words. Thank you that you listen because you love us, not because we've said everything exactly right. Help us grow in confidence as we pray, whether we're alone or with other people, and remind us that prayer is simply talking with the God who knows us, loves us, and invites us to come to Him.
