Why Confess If God Already Knows?

If God already knows everything, why do we have to confess our sins? I'm Bob Shaw, and this is Faith Fuel. I've wondered this very thing before. If God already knows every thought I've had, every word I've spoken, every mistake I've made, why tell him something he already knows? Isn't confession just stating the obvious? I don't think so. Think back to the Garden of Eden. After Adam and Eve sinned, they hid. God came looking for them and asked, Where are you? Do you think God didn't know? Of course he knew. The question wasn't for God's benefit, it was for theirs. He was inviting them to come out of hiding. I think confession works like that. It's not about informing God, it's about coming honestly before Him. First John 1 9 says, if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. The word confess literally means to agree. We're agreeing with God about our sin instead of excusing it, minimizing it, or pretending it isn't there. Confession is important. God tells us to do it. But if we're not careful, we can lose sight of why we're confessing in the first place. That's when confession starts becoming a checklist instead of a conversation with God. Lord, forgive me for this and this and this and oh yeah, this, then move on. But I think God wants something deeper than a list. He wants honesty. He wants the kind of relationship where I don't feel the need to hide from him. Because really, I can't. He already knows everything anyway. He knows my failures, my motives, my thoughts, and he still invites me to come. That's why Hebrews says we can approach God's throne of grace with confidence. Jesus has already opened the door for us. So instead of hiding, we can come honestly before Him. Confession doesn't earn God's love. It reminds me that I already have it. And maybe that's why confession isn't really about God's memory. It's about my heart. Every time I confess, I'm choosing to walk in the light instead of hiding in the shadows. Father, thank you that you know everything about us and still invite us to come near. Help us to be honest with you, quick to confess, and grateful for the forgiveness you've given us through Jesus. Teach us to walk in the light every day. In Jesus' name. Amen. God already knows you completely, and He still loves you completely.
