Who are the preachers we recommend you listen to?

In this episode of Power Hour, Pastors Ty and Kyle break down their top 3 favorite preachers to listen to right now—the voices that challenge them, sharpen them, and push them closer to Jesus. From powerful communicators to deep, truth-filled teaching, we’re sharing who’s impacting us and why.

But we don’t stop there.

We also get real about something every believer needs to hear: listening to sermons is powerful—but it’s not a substitute for your own walk with God. No podcast, no preacher, no YouTube message can replace time in the Word and being planted in a local church.

This episode will help you discover great voices to learn from—while keeping your foundation where it belongs.

What is up, everybody? We are back for another episode of Power Hour. My name is Pastor Kyle. I'm Pastor Ty. And we're excited to get into this topic. We are talking today about each of our top three favorite pastors slash preachers slash influencers, however you want to describe it, guys that we listen to on a regular basis to receive the word, to be able to get it. Obviously, Pastor Ty, he preaches almost every Sunday. And though he does listen to himself, that's not what we always like to do. So we enjoy finding other people to listen to, other perspectives, other viewpoints. And so we are going to go through our top three uh favorites, each of ours. Uh we do want to make a quick disclaimer about this. Uh a lot of Christians have fallen under this uh or into this trap where they take the video on YouTube and they'll watch the video and they'll watch a sermon instead of reading the word for themselves. We want to make it really clear that it is good if you listen to other preachers. We encourage that. That's what this podcast is all about. However, it cannot replace reading the scripture, praying, seeking out the Holy Spirit for discernment. And it also cannot replace if you're physically able to, making it to church and going to church and and having that community, because you know it's one thing to be able to listen to a pastor on YouTube and get something amazing out of it, but it will never satisfy the community aspect that God wants us to have. So with that that big disclaimer, Pastor Ty, I'll let you take the the first swing.

SPEAKER_01

Awesome. Yeah, I got a weird one. Well, not weird, I should say, but probably one that I don't think anyone here has ever heard of. His name is David Diga Hernandez. He is a YouTuber, and man, he does he does different conferences, he does different things. He doesn't have his own church, he's like a revivalist evangelist, has his own YouTube studio, talks about specifically the Holy Spirit, overcoming um like the demonic, being set free, spiritual gifts. And man, just the way that he explains how to listen, be empowered by and follow the Holy Spirit is just like no one else I've ever seen. I think he's he's very passionate, very polished, and just does a great job. And so, man, anytime that I see a clip from him or he does like a video or is preaching in a church, I always tune in because man, it's just something that I want to grow in. And I just don't think there's enough Pentecostal preachers out there, man. There's not enough people that have put emphasis in their ministry on people and being encountered by the Holy Spirit. And so whenever I get a chance to listen to that, I love it. I think it's great.

SPEAKER_00

Well, obviously, we're we're Pentecostal guys, we believe in the Holy Spirit working uh today just like he worked in the book of Acts. Uh so it's important to have that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. And I think I think it's cool from someone that this is probably a terrible term, but specializes on it, that has given his ministry for people to specifically be encountered by it. You know, I we there's many of us that are called to preach the Bible, but I think each preacher has kind of an emphasis, if that makes sense. Like I would say my emphasis is to get people rallied, passionate, and moving forward. But to have someone whose whole emphasis is on you being set free from spiritual bondage and empowered to uh experience a life full of the Holy Spirit. I think that's a really cool emphasis on his life and his ministry. So I love it. So David Diga Hernandez, you should check him out on YouTube. I think he's got a Facebook and Instagram, but man, it is powerful. You would be blessed if you listened to it. It's it's good times.

SPEAKER_00

That's a good one. That's a good first start. Uh so my first one is an Assemblies of God guy, and he's someone I actually found more recently out of Columbus, Ohio. His name is Greg Ford. He's the pastor at uh OneCurch, a huge church out there, uh church that I believe he planted back in the day. And I I enjoy his preaching because though it is uh expository as far as how he works through most of the series, he kind of does it in a topical way. And uh he really makes a big emphasis on the cultural background that uh that passage, those reading it back then would have understood it and kind of interpreted it through their lens. Uh, but then he makes it very relevant today. Uh he's a he's definitely a fiery preacher, also very, very Pentecostal. A lot of the preachers I have today, um, I kind of like that style. I like the fiery uh guys. Like I'm I'm not really one to listen to you know the the quiet. Um like I'm not a huge fan per se of like a John Piper, for instance, but you know, he'll just sit up there and he'll he'll preach. And that might be for some, but that's not really my style. I like to get excited, I like to get uh going. I want my mind to be uh constantly working and moving, where I'm looking at other scriptures while he's preaching, and it's just it's more of a an active thing. Um, also, it it helps that when I listen to these guys, I'm usually walking or I'm at the gym. So it with them, as they're putting the energy uh into it, it kind of helps me get going as well. Let me ask you this quick question before you go to your number two. Uh, when do you enjoy listening to these sermons or watching them?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I I'll listen a lot when I'm driving. Uh I'm you know too extroverted, so if I there's no one I can call, I'll usually listen to a sermon there. Um, I love likewise listening to Jim or going on walks. Um and it depends on how active I want to be. Sometimes I want to actively watch and I'll be sitting in my office and and watching if I if I feel like it's necessary. But yeah, I usually like to do some kind of physical activity to go along with mentally paying attention to the sermon. So yeah, that's good. Very similar, very similar. Um, my number two is another one that I don't I'd be curious if any of you have heard of. He is the vice president of an organization that um assemblies God work with a lot called Convoy of Hope. He used to be a youth pastor, then he was a district youth pastor, like a network youth pastor over the whole state. Yeah. Now he works for Convoy Hope and is an author, and his name is Heath Adamson. And he's just written some really powerful books um on experiencing the Holy Spirit, on preaching the word, and on evangelizing. And I just, his books, um, I think there's four of them now, are are amazing. They're they're more recent, they're more fun. Um, I love a guy that has a ministry heart, but works kind of in the business world, I would say, because he's not pastoring or anything like that, but still is a heart for people to know God. I think his books are very applicable. He's got great illustrations and great stories. And I think it's a book that if anyone read them, would really, really um just impact your life. Grace in the Valley is the first one I'd recommend. So if you're if you're looking for a book to read, Grace in the Valley, you can find it on Amazon, you can find it on Amaz uh Apple Books, you can find it physically on if you look up Heath Adamson, I'm sure you can find it on his website. But man, he is just a powerful, powerful author that will get you motivated, jonesed up, and want to be on the mission of God. So check it out. Pastor Kyle, what about you? Number two.

SPEAKER_00

All right, number two, probably I would say the most famous one on either one of our lists is uh Philip Anthony Mitchell. Yep, uh 2019 Church, Atlanta, Georgia. Um I'll tell you what, you know, some guys, it's hard to say how they get famous or why they get famous, but this guy just brings it. He brings it every single week. He's a very expository preacher. He's been in the book of Matthew for for years now. They just finished. They just finished? Yeah. Oh man. I'm I'm slowly working through uh Matthew right now, listening to the uh his content, and I'm actually kind of taking it and trying to mirror our series and mark right now, so we kind of we can kind of line them up a little bit, which I've I've really enjoyed. But uh with Philip Anthony Mitchell, like he he doesn't pull the punches, like he doesn't shy away from the hard conversations, he's not going to bend to uh cultural norms. Um he just a very again, very Pentecostal guy, very fiery preacher. Um probably a little more the old school fire brimstone style. Uh, not something that I always look use uh or enjoy, but like I don't know. He he just brings it in such a way that I I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoy. So I'd say Philip Anthony Mitchell, especially uh if you're looking for verse-by-verse uh sermons, he he's a great option.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, that's really good. That's really good. My next one is probably also my most famous one, my third choice. And his name is John Beer. Many of you might be familiar with his book, Bait of Satan, if you have not read that, a book about forgiveness and not letting Satan take you straight. It is powerful. I've read many of his books, listened to many of his messages. I've actually met the guy. Uh funny story, I'll tell you before I get back into him. I was like I want to say like 1920, and I went to a men's conference, and he was this preacher, and I was asked to help with offerings. So I said, sure. So when we were about two minutes away from the end of the sermon, they get in offering time. Me and a buddy stood up to go to the back to get ready for offering, and he like called me out in front of like hundreds of guys and was like, sit back down, the words are not over yet, da-da-da. And I was like super embarrassed, and I sat down and then went and met with him afterwards, and he like apologized the next day, like had me stand up and apologize for everyone that he misunderstood. And that's funny. Was really funny. I was like, hey, John Bever pointed at me, so I'm doing pretty good. Um but, anyways, man, his he's got so many good books. I've read many of them. Undercover, a book about spiritual authority is another great one, but he's another one I would say does not pull back, does not pull his punches. Every time I've heard him speak or read any of his books, it's been um transformational. And really, like he'll hit things in a way that I had never considered before, and it kind of changes the way I see scripture and see life. Yeah, I just really appreciate that. And like you, Pastor Kyle, I just like people that are hard-hitting. It's like, man, if I'm here for the word, I want the word, you know what I mean? You don't need to butter it up for me, like hit me straight in the face with it. So he's a he's another one of my favorites. Yeah. What about your last choice?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um, so before I get there, I I just want to say one of the things that I think got really popular uh recently was this idea of like um it got popular with this seeker-sensitive movement, but these like this idea that preachers have to be these entertainers and like sure, you should be able to hold a crowd. You you can't be boring, obviously. But at the same point, uh, so many of these pastors have gone so far, like I remember there I've listened to guys where we're 15 minutes into uh a 40-minute message and they haven't opened their Bible yet, and they're still telling stories and cracking jokes. And I'm like, hey, can we get to the word? Like, if I wanted a comedy show, I would have you know showed up for a comedy show, right? And uh, so that's why these guys I I really enjoy one of the reasons why I'm doing this podcast because I feel like it's hard to find really good speakers. Uh, my my third one, and I'll have some a few honorable mentions as well, is uh actually a pastor that I used to work under in in Oregon. So someone probably no one listening to this has heard of uh unless they're friends uh from back in Klamath Falls, but it's Pastor Jim Boyd of Refuge City Church in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Uh he is a longer preacher than me. He'll he I mean he'll bring the word for a full hour, which some of these guys, like Philip Anthony Mitchell's the same way. Um, I don't think I'll ever get to that point that I'm preaching over an hour, but he will preach mostly topical as far as the messages. He doesn't do a lot of series, unlike a lot of pastors, but he he is uh very driven uh to connect people with the Holy Spirit and to connect people with God and to reveal the Bible and to kind of make it come alive in a way that I've heard very few pastors do. Like, yes, he'll he'll have stories from time to time, he he cracks jokes, he's a very funny guy, but he will take the word of God and preach it uh for what it is. Uh, he won't be inserting extra opinions or or this and that, and he's very unapologetic for how he preaches, he um brings the the word alive. Um, you know, I listened to him, I sat under him for almost um seven years, and I think his preaching style has really shaped a lot of my preaching style. So if you like my preaching style, you'll love his. He just preaches longer than than I do. Uh but Jim Boyd, Refuge City Church in Klamath Falls, Oregon. That's that's my third.

SPEAKER_01

Awesome. Well, I only have one honorable mention. Okay. Um you said you have a few, so why don't I throw mine up there and then I'll let you throw yours and we'll we'll we'll go from there. But mine is a skip Heidzik, who is a Calvary Chapel preacher in New Mexico. Um, love it, goes verse by verse, book by book, through the Bible, very deep, very teacher, like um I don't know, just really goes through things in a very thorough and understandable way. Really enjoy it. Um I love verse-by-verse preaching, so he's he's one of my favorites. A little bit older, I'd say, like in the 60s, but very passionate, very powerful, and very faithful. I mean, another of mine, and I think no one will be surprised by this, but Kyle Allison, come on, bring him the word this Sunday to a list or something. Don't have me any favors, but I don't want to know what list that would be. But man, I'm excited this Sunday, he's bringing the word, and I appreciate that we have a staff that's not based off of just me, but we have a lot of powerful preachers, so I appreciate that. What about you, Pastor Kyle? Who's on your on your honorable list?

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely. Well, the reason why I didn't have you on my list is I probably listened to you more than anybody else.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I was gonna say, you uh you just didn't want that Christmas bonus this year. I'm on to you. I'm on.

SPEAKER_00

Oh man. Yeah, that Christmas bonus always looming over one's head. Uh no, it's I always think it's funny because once we by the time we get to Sunday, I I've probably already heard your sermon three times. And then obviously we got three services. So man, I'll tell you what, no one listens to you like I listen to you. That's right.

SPEAKER_01

You're my biggest fan, bro.

SPEAKER_00

I pretty much have your message memorized. I'll sign your teacher.

SPEAKER_01

I'll sign your teacher later today, don't you worry.

SPEAKER_00

The uh the two that I have are two AG guys, two guys I've I've met actually have relationships with. Uh, the first one we were able to hear this last uh last week is Mike Santiago. He's the pastor at Focus Church in uh Raleigh, North Carolina. Great guy. Just a great speaker. He went from topical this last year to switching to expository uh about the same time as us, which was cool. He's going through the book of Genesis right now, which I think is super awesome. Uh very powerful speaker, um someone that's very easy to listen to, very easy to follow. I'd recommend him, especially if you're you're newer to uh the faith, newer to reading your Bible. He's someone that that keeps it very, very simple uh while making sure that he's uh also preaching to the more seasoned saints in the room. Uh he does something that Pastor Ty and I always try to do and strive for, which is a double barrel preaching style, which we pray we uh preach to the new person as well as preaching to the person who's been in the pew for you know 20 plus years. And then the other one is a local Idaho guy, uh Pastor Jordan Hodges from Christian uh Faith Center. Dude's absolutely amazing, powerful preacher. Uh, you know, he's right there in Napa. Um, so he's really close. Uh does has amazing uh series. I like him because I I you know had just got to know him over the last few months since I moved here. And uh, you know, I think it's important that we have a good variety, and just because they're not quote nationally famous doesn't mean they're not incredible speakers. That's great. And so I I've got to a point that I enjoy listening listening to him specifically because I know his heart and I I know uh his motivation as he preaches, and that to me elevates um a lot of uh what he shares because I know it's authentic in that way.

SPEAKER_01

Let's go.

SPEAKER_00

So those would be my two. So all in all, we've given you guys uh a bunch of options as far as preaching. Um again, we never we never think this is a substitute, this is an add-on. I would call it the um, this is like the uh protein shake for Christians. Uh you can't live on protein shakes, you gotta eat healthy, uh, you gotta work out, but protein shakes is a nice supplement for someone trying to get fit. In the same way, finding these preachers and being able to listen to two or three messages throughout your week, whether you uh listen to them podcast form uh or you're watching them on YouTube, it is just able to supplement your uh your walk of faith and be able to deepen your relationship, gives you uh some other perspectives. Because obviously, here at Powerhouse, you have myself, you have Pastor Ty, you have Pastor Bambi, um, we have some guest speakers that uh come throughout the year. Uh, but it's important to have more viewpoints than just ours. We live in this incredible time, uh, some of the only time in the world that you are able to just sit down and listen to almost any pastor you want around the world. It's absolutely uh incredible uh the amounts of material that that we have. But again, find some guys that you like. Uh if you have a chance, comment down below uh who's your favorite, who do you like? Because I'm always looking for for new pastors, new preachers. Um, you know, I might go through and binge six uh sermons from a Philip Anthony Mitchell, and then you know, I kind of have to take a break for a few weeks and listen to someone else, get a get a kind of different voice, and then I'll I always tend to go back. Uh, but let us know who's your favorite, uh, because we'd like to know. And again, uh we're excited because we're continuing our series in Mark, so be looking for that. We are talking about uh Jesus as he calls his disciples to follow him, so it's going to be uh really, really exciting.

SPEAKER_01

And with that said, we are out of here. Man, I don't know about you, but that was powerful. Really looking forward to our next episode where we're gonna talk about something that will impact you in a deep way.

SPEAKER_00

Impact you on the in a deep way.

SPEAKER_01

And when when we know what that is, you'll get to the biggest. Yeah, yeah, I'm so excited to find that out.

SPEAKER_00

All right. Goodbye, everybody. We love you.
