A lot of people know the headline version of Harvey Milk: openly gay politician, San Francisco, assassination. We wanted to start somewhere messier and more human, back when he’s just a kid in Woodmere, New York trying to understand why he feels different, why opera feels like home, and why the adults around him talk about “homosexuals” like a warning label. That early shame and confusion is not just biography, it’s a map of what the 1940s and 1950s demanded of queer people who wanted to stay safe.

From college to the Korean War era US Navy, we talk about how Milk rises through the ranks while still finding gay community near the base, and how quickly that world can turn into risk, discharge, and long term consequences. We end Part 1 with his first serious relationship, the tenderness of their domestic routines, the reality of closeted life around family, and the flash points that show his temper and politics before the Harvey Milk most people recognize. Subscribe for Part 2, and if this hit you, share it with a friend and leave a review so more people can find the story.

SPEAKER_00

If you move quickly, you move quickly. So he does pop so much shit. Did you just I don't know knock it off? No, Dan, we can't.

Thanks, Birthdays, Pride, Mental Health

SPEAKER_00

Hello, people, friends, other people, uh, other people friends. Yeah, don't like us, but I'm on shit for no reason. Um, okay, I'm Tophy. Um, and we are that's uh so that's nice. So uh Coffee has some pretty severe AHD, so she has to do stuff with her hands while I talk. So I'll be doing stuff with my hands. Just uh she thinks she's being great, she probably is, but it's fine. Um before we get started on my episode, uh, there's a few things that we had mentioned that we wanted to mention before we started. So we hit some downloads for our hand class, which is more than I was anticipating ever, yeah, ever. So um, we just want to say thank you to everyone who's listening and downloading, and now that we're on YouTube watching us, even though we're a bunch of weirdos. Um then also I wanted to acknowledge um that it was my dad's birthday. Oh just a little bit sooner. Thank you. Um, yes, I wanted to acknowledge my dad's birthday, it was on June 10th. Um, so if we didn't say happy birthday again at some point during these, we could do that. Yeah, so so we're doing it now. Happy birthday. Happy Pride month, yes. And I think it was well I don't think it's every month. No, I believe it's men's mental health months. Oh wait, it's not 10 big months yeah. Which is funny because um Joey asked me last night, he was like, Do you know what this month is? And I was like, Pride and pride month. And he's like, no, other than that. And I was like, June. Is it January season? I said that two, I said the other season. And then I was like, My God's birthday, I don't know what what am I missing here? Yeah. And he said, um, it's men's mental health mental health health awareness month. Um he's like, Yeah, I said big months for your dad. What do you think he would be like celebrated clock out and I was like his fucking birthday? The biggest holiday of all. Right. He's like, Really? You only talk about mental health and pride or anything with this no, because it's his fucking that's what he thinks about it more than anything. Yeah, but that's fine, I'm gonna go. Um, do you want to do like a quick recap on what you covered? Uh yes. So the last couple weeks he's been talking about um being getting military has like the laws around that, and um I realize actually now he won't be okay. So I realized that um a lot of the stuff that we talked about was like transfer to harsher stuff specifically not talked about. Um but I did want to say that it's like an Instagram comment from somebody who said we had a great time, and I hope that um you know it's kinda clear that we I hope it's clear that it's not everybody's changed, but it was a lot of people have changed. Um so let's see, when what kind do you start with? Milk military. What year? Do you remember? He just went to the military um after college, which is 1951. So Korean War, Gay Out War, all the military um engagements, all the teacher mass don't tell, which was so before you could not all be gay in the house actually, as you teach you whatever. Um it was you weren't allowed to. Like I said some last few weeks. Sometimes it applied and sometimes it didn't. Depends on what war we were in. Yeah, I don't feel matter of what matter. Um so a lot of people have to stay hidden and secretive and um because if they were found out

Recap On Being Gay In Military

SPEAKER_00

or suspected, they're just out. Yep, um, and they lost their honorable discharges if they didn't do anything wrong. Um, and it's hard to get jobs because they're like when you're ready to recognize that you are not a desirable person, which can be really hard to look at pretty good. Um, they don't have to talk to you, which is that uh I will ask you about it and you will tell me about it. So that was also hard. Hidden Lies again, yeah. 2011, uh Pussy Obama repealed that.

unknown

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

That's just so far I see because you didn't know. Um, so yeah, um, I think that's not a pretty good summary, yeah. I mean just just in case like someone decides to watch this episode or listen to this episode first. There's like a little bit of context as to why I'm covering Harvey Mark, who is a gay guy and politician. He's a gay guy and uh politician. Um, he's the mayor, isn't this a? No, he just calls himself. He is the mayor of Pastor Street. Okay, yeah, it's already um oh uh also, uh, when I was re-listening to the first episode of Gaze in the military, I realized that I said my dad's um graduation year incorrectly. Oh, because I said that he graduated in 76 and then went straight into military in the Air Force. Mm-hmm yep, he graduated in 74. And then went into military, so I just wanted to crack that because I thought. Um, how do you have to happen before your birth?

unknown

I know.

SPEAKER_00

I know. There's a reason that I'm his birthday caught you down this foot. Because if I forget, he will cry, which he has done numerous times to me. Well, he was alive, by the way. Um, cool, hopefully his birthday. My mom'll be a week early. My birthday. And called it like cycleback when we didn't allow read it. He said, I don't like it. He's just like, cycleback is not the birthday. Thanks, though, so you're wearing call me back in a week. She didn't. Um, he's not here. So cute. She's mad by it. That's why I thought you. Um, okay, so when you're talking about Hardy Book, um, I was super stoked um to research his life because it's just a whirlwind, and it just like he you wonder what, um, this is probably not easy parts like I told you earlier, uh, because his early life is just so dense. Like there's so much involved, and like I tried to read some things out, but like some things just needed to be said, and then um I kind of went into

Why Harvey Milk Matters Here

SPEAKER_00

like a little bit about his partners as well. He can kind of get a context for them in their relationship, um, and like their you know, gay background in the early 50s and 50s and stuff as well. So that's like a full bit, you know. Um, so it's probably two parts.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Um I wanted to start.

unknown

So okay.

SPEAKER_00

Um, so one of my resources was um a book called The Mayor's Castro Street, and it is there's so much information, not only about like his life, but like his family's life, his partner's lives. Um the author went through and interviewed so many people from Harvey's life, like all the way from like grade school till Castro Street. Like he did his research. Um, even he said tell the truth. I literally just said, No, it doesn't tell the truth, this second book, the call. No, it does, it's just gate on, and it made me angry. Um, but I always said with a quote um from the author's note from the mayor of Caster Street, because I thought it was just so dispoigned. Um, so it says this um this book will not please ideologies looking for a political catch. Conversely, some might complain that it is sympathetic to a gay point of view, because no traces of moral outrage against homosexuality are to be found on these pages. On this point, I agree with historian John Boswell when he wrote, quote, What will strike some readers as a partisan point of view is chiefly the absence of negative attitudes on this subject, ubiquitous in the modern West. After a long, loud noise, a sudden silence may seem deafening. I just in a difficult way. I suspect others might fret that this book is indiscreet in its discussion of private topics, not normally raised in a journalistic forum. But the only answer that I try to tell the truth, it is not objec it is not the objective, at least be fair. History is not served to a reporter's prize, trepidation, and propriety over robust journalistic duty to tell the whole story.

unknown

So, I get yes.

SPEAKER_00

So pretty much like he focuses on Harvey and on the fact he's not gonna you know sway one way or the other. So I'll make that one, uh, like I just I'm not biased, but I can keep those people because I'm biased, right? Some overall disagreeable highlights, and just ugh, so graph this isn't biased.

unknown

I just keep them. Oh much. That's fine.

SPEAKER_00

Not to buy it for. Harvey Bernard Milk was born in Woodnere, New York, May 22nd, 1930. So that's a year. Oh, it's at the end. Literally the last day. And my dog erased my bad as well.

unknown

Holiday, January.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god, I need to find

Childhood, Opera, And Early Shame

SPEAKER_00

his birth certificate. Anyway, complicated. I wonder if my mom had this. Or maybe it's in there in that cardio, right? Uh uh. Anyway, sorry. Not even deny it, and also Bernard is such an embodied. He says, touch my eyeball. Oh, you're fine. He said, I don't want to. You just need how it's got to face, but you know, keep on. Oh, okay. So application was described as ordinary. He fit in well enough. He was an average student. He was a second student high school athlete and had a quote wit that more than compensated for a play. It's not homely safe. End quote. He's not cute, he's not cloudy, no. Um, what's he asked? Oh, wait, what kind of sport ball did he play? Uh okay. Uh, sport bowl. Um, at the child, he said to interest um in the opera, and his favorite composer, he's got he got so interesting the opera that he like figured out who his favorite composers were. So his favorite composer is in fact, I apologize. Um, Mauler, Jason Batner. Just and Baker, it's a street, sorry, I can't read my own fucking notes. Um, so every week he asked his mother Minnie, horrible, give her best time, um, for a change to opera to allow it to see the opera. Did you say? Not easy. Um around this time is when Hardy started to feel different in his sexuality, and around this time he also had to learn his name behind it. So at one time, Minnie, I didn't even call her his mom, like she's just Minnie. She's Mama Mama Minnie, Mama Minnie, yes. Um, at one time Minnie had to sit him down and have a talk with him, since he was going to New York City so often because he, you know, like shows and opera and stuff. Uh, she warned him of the people called homosexual. Yeah. People called homosexuals. Okay, yes. She told him that they come around the train stations and did things to little boys. She didn't say exactly, but based on the tone of her voice, he could tell her with something that was never supposed to be talked about. Yeah, this is that thing that I said last time where they conflict the two because of things like Albert Fish that happened like back in the 30s and MS 60s. They just happened, don't remember what Albert Fish would call it exactly. It isn't 30. Um, but anyway, like it's incorrect, but they just put the two together because they called them both sexual psychopaths. Yeah, yeah, they were loved. So um, after this conversation, he thought there were only two options for him, because he was starting to figure out that he was one of those homosexual people. So he was either going to grow up and be one of those homosexual people, but homosexual that people make jokes about that were addresses so like Jacqueline's name is Jacqueline's quite often, or he was gonna be one of those men that hung out at the Woodmere L I R R spot at the translation. So he was either gonna be made fun of and dressed as a girl, or he was gonna be one of those.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Those were in his mind that the only two options he had.

unknown

So pick a dress.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, um, so I don't know if you did you look up to um 157. Did you look that up?

unknown

No. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

We're gonna have to watch it first of all.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Um, I think it's Patrick Freeze. I don't need it. Okay, well, John Leg was on leg was on no, I'm just sorry. I'm sure he's watching. He's like people keep my name, right? We never go muted again. Um he's gonna say it. Um, he'll confusion. And I just wish that I could do what I could use too. Hmm. I don't put enough effort into myself to do that.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Alright, so yeah. So we're gonna watch that movie and also Harvey has two options, and we hope you get the deals.

unknown

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Um, so even though we really tried to scare him, when he would take tricks to the old mass of his shows, he said confusion. Harvey was a real trees. Um, anyway, confusing time for all of you, scroll. Um, when he would go to his shows, he would get into his completion. So by the age of 14, he can no longer deny his desires. Random groupings turn into brief twists. These are all like quotes from this book fine. Wait, wait, wait, wait, sorry, I can't hear anything. He would do these things with the man at the net at the show. So these encounters at the whole net gave him valuable information, such as where to the men who likes junior high athletes and how to stroll through the gay sections of central parts without doing faster. And keep down right because something later happened. Um, so he goes past us into his newly discovered subculture. Um, and then like you mentioned during war times, millions of men were thrust out into life with no other. This led to men realizing that they were not the only ones who had these sexual fallacies, and they learned how to find each other and make a thousands of soldiers um at the major debarcation points in both New York and San Francisco. Um, since many of the military housing did not have enough room for all the soldiers, many were forced to sleep in the parts. Um, if two men probably stumble out of the bush and run into a cop, they would just G eyes have to get to sleep, and the cop would just go on every way. There's so many things coming from my head, though. Yep, so that's what we're doing because my guess. No, no, no, no, no, that's it now. Um that's the only thing trying to head, actually. Thank you for trying to guess, though. Um what okay, uh, first cat on back here.

unknown

I told you that.

SPEAKER_00

So they would they had all the two soldiers and sailors, mm-hmm, and nowhere to put them. So they're like, the two fish service goes sleep under a bush. Man, you guys got two nose jobs. You sure that you go sleep under a bush?

unknown

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

How interesting. Um also, did you know I I didn't talk about it, but I wish that I had found it better. But did you know that one of the neighbor bases called Treasure Island? Wonderful. And I was like, why wouldn't it be? And why wouldn't they be yeah, okay? I could just make more sense. I mean the Muppets Treasure Island is like my favorite treasure islands. Okay, they're actually on Muppets at that case. Looking carries running around. Oh, what's the what's the American evil one? Oh people? Yeah, oh fuck, I don't remember. You have to look at it, I don't really like it. Alright, so yeah, so we have all these soldiers who are forced to like sleep in pipes, but they're also realizing that they have these fancies, so they would like, you know, they'll flop behind a bush, and then the cops just didn't care because they were soldiers. So they're like, oh, you're sleeping. Have my day, anyway. Yep. So I would watch and find a tricks from these soldiers, and by all chance, he was reading a very active homosexual life. Peter Hol is here, he said 14, are they 14? Run around in Central Park, and these are adult men, yes.

unknown

But not with a sport ball.

SPEAKER_00

You have a sportball, let's talk about sportball.

unknown

I love sport ball. No, um, sorry. What sport ball is that? Huh?

SPEAKER_00

Your hands and basketball. Um, not really watch twice to sit in basketball, but it's not right. Anyway, yeah, it's like so. Um, so he played basketball. And every time he means, oh, you're like, yeah, Harvey! And they're like, oh, what is sport? I don't know if this guy's getting sportball. We call it sport. Um okay, so he babysit about here's a linebacker on his high school football team, uh, Bayshore High School, where he was given the nickname Glimpy, G-L I M T Y. Glimpy, Glimpy. Fucking big. Okay, okay. Uh oh. Yeah. Um, in the book, the one that I said got a few of the dates on, um, it's called Milk, a pictorial history of harsh milk. It's only asking why they get pictures in here. Um, it mentions that his yearbook photo was tied with, quote, glimpse and milk. And they say women are never at a loss for words. Because nobody would just he was a quote unquote sissy. So it says in the book, not my words. So if I see this book, if someone between party metal and handsome, uh-huh. He's glumpy because he's just always bigger than a stick out feature, yeah? Mm-hmm. And no one can tell he's a sissy because he plays good sport ball. Two different types of sport, two different types of sport ball. The one where you swish in a goal, and then the one where you get the ball at the end, mm-hmm and it's called some line feature.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, you know, he could have done so much evil, and I think it was easy to put it probably glimpse. Uh, because he has a big nose, big ears, and big feet. Which has that actually too, but in my home origin. It's my sport ball. And did. Um, so during front of high school there were sissies, quite uncle, like I said, not my words, this is from the books. Um, there were two that were known in the high school. Um, one bullied her ass so much in the locker room that he broke and cried quite often.

unknown

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

And the other one was a younger brother of a prominent black athlete, so people just left him alone because his older brother was like a star athlete, but the other one got bullied mercilessly.

unknown

That's a sad. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um this is another word that I had never heard of before, um, to describe queer people. And okay, they said it numerous times in the book now that I've never heard of. Um, there were other swishes. Hmm. Never heard that in the way. Interesting. Um, yeah, swishes. But they stuck to drama club and green club. They were definitely not on a basketball or subconscious. Oh, so these are two other like sports who were out, the two that you mentioned, or just no, they're the only two. And then there were the only two, like, known for sure, like out, but then there were other suspected. Yeah, because they stuck to theater and green club. But since Harvey was, you know, a masculine ball, so Bobby other suspected that he would be a swish or a swish. No. Because you know, gay man can't be on sports. I actually knew this, uh, Marvel was Harvey uh gay. He's also Jewish. Uh I don't know if I knew. I think that I think the only thing I consider

Holocaust Context And Pink Triangles

SPEAKER_00

I really knew about Harvey Melk is that he was a politician and then he died. If he decided he's an openly gay politician and then he died, and that's a yeah. Um so he was Jewish. Um, and being Jewish in high school during World War II, uh, and writing all the atrocities of the Holocaust, he argued really hard. Um, in a second away, he didn't know it yet either. So it obviously knew the fact that because he's Jewish, mm-hmm. But as you have talked about in part one of days in the military, it gave liberation in Germany before Hitler was when it's happening. It was doing great. Um, the Luna Republic was um amazingly progressive.

unknown

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Um, so as a quick repeat, the liberation trust for illegal demands and collected thousands of signatures on petitions for homosexual equality. Um, in 1936, Heinrich Himmler made a decree. And this was this is his quote. Just as we today have gone back to the ancient German view on the questioning of marriages between different races, so too, in our judgment of homosexuality, a symptom of degeneracy, which would destroy our race, we must return to the guided Nordic principle, extermination of degenerates. Yeah, um they had to wear peak triangles, and then it's like you type of questions. Um, so with his decree saying that, you know, we need to exterminate the degenerates that are gay. Um, it led to gay people being sent to level three camps, death camps, um, and they were first to like he said to wear pink triangles so as not to be confused with Jewish people who were yellow size data. Um, and this is kind of where I want to recognize as well, even for the same as um a lot of people think that the Holocaust was just Jewish people, and I just want to point out it was not. It was people of color, it was um homosexuals, it was um people with mental disabilities, physical disabilities, age people, yes, um um, political people who were a little bit different. Um pretty much anybody who wasn't blonde-haired, blue-eyed, or yeah, yeah. Yeah, it was it was six million Jews and five foot five million others.

unknown

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

So, AJ's wonder. Why don't you remember everyone the Holocaust was not just Jewish people, like yes, it was happily content Jewish people, but there were others. They were they made up over half of the depths in population, but that is the other, like, yeah, uh a mass that was like forty percent, probably, yeah. Um at the age of seventeen, uh I was what the fuck?

unknown

Nope, yep, okay. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

At the age of 17, uh, he was arrested in central park. Remember I said that this was like yeah, okay, so this is eight. Seventeen, he's not 39 years. They do pretty well. Um, so it was August of 1947, which is also the age of graduated high school. Um, a hot day in Central Park, Central Park was popping. That just immediately walked into mind was Needle's.

unknown

It was a hot Sunday night. Mm-hmm. Yeah, this year.

SPEAKER_00

This is Needle. Maybe, I don't remember. Um, anyway, families were out together running picnics, the father slash husbands of these families were stunbaving with no shirts on, not switching it away. And the piece in Chancellor was disrupted by police descending on a more isolated part of the park because a group of men had taken their shirts off, and this was considered inducing exposure. It was only inducing exposure because these men were dead. Uh, the straight dads who had their shirts off were totally. Uh but not the group of single men who joined the day and probably listening with each other was not okay. Um so Hardy and other homosexuals were rounded up into a paddy riding, and taken to the station, uh, as they took into the tie riding, he noticed all the equally shirtless men grabbing their children close and gursing at them because their children had been so close to BDS. Oh, put your ticket away in. Oh no.

unknown

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

Um tried to do anything that we've just liked to do this to quote put the fear of God in these men. I don't shame and humiliate them. Yeah, that's um. So after high school he graduated in 1936, uh and just in Paddy Ryan. Oh, I see it quite often. Lady says. I know that there is like an actual difference, but just with Pine Radio. That is true. Like, yeah, I'm gonna say time

Central Park Arrest And Policing

SPEAKER_00

writing. You must have managed only the time. Sorry. Uh after high school he attended the New York State College for Teachers in Albany, um, which is now known as the State University of New York at Albany. Um at the time, this was the only state school that offered a liberal arts teaching curriculum. Uh, him and his classmates referred to the college as the poor man's yale, because they were smart enough to qualify, but not rich enough to afford to give them some prestigious private schools. Um, during this time in college, one of his classmates found out that two other men in their barracks or dorms were queers, uh, but hardly ever had anything to do with them, and he didn't fit the stereotype of way gay personalized. Like, he plays purple. Exactly. Yeah, so nobody knew that he was one of them. He plays purple, I'm nearly okay with him, and then yeah, that was a bit true. Yeah, hang out, aren't you? Alright, well, um, he was an average student in college and he became the state college news sports reporter. Uh that he had to travel with the basketball team.

unknown

So, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You know, she's gonna use a sweetie little bastard. He knows what he's doing. Yeah, yeah. Okay. Um, because classmates said you could find him in the back of the bus if he was the right to the party. Cool kid always in the back of the bus. How do we do the matter? Oh my god, what? I always look too close to school and take the sidewalk. One time.

SPEAKER_01

Let's go out early, because it's this one.

SPEAKER_00

Which action can't go.

unknown

Which of course can't.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, very happy. Anyway, what's the thing? Oh wait, school out early. I'm not really too close. And at the time, we were just down to it, maybe like a quarter mile or so, maybe half an hour mile from parallel school. Yeah, they were early in this room. And uh we were told to walk home. So Connor and I took turns walking for button initiation. We had gotten um I don't see where is this? That was the building. So it's a body park. Oh, so we're okay. So there's nothing walking, just a bitch. So Connor and I, the calling two kids are taking turns, following the path for the other one. Uh oh. They're like, Yeah. And it's like, what are you doing? Okay, over here, closing time.

unknown

Fuck off.

SPEAKER_00

It's kind of you're like when like your grandparents are like, Oh, we're gonna go walk uphill in the snow both ways. That's exactly what I'm saying. I had little legs and get this hard. Sit for me and the little legs.

unknown

Alright, yep.

SPEAKER_00

So he's a left or party in the back of us, we have to travel with a um, let's say nobody had ever suspected him of being gay, and no one ever questioned or wondered what he was doing on the weekends when he did go anyway. Because he was still going to see shows like opera and Broadway and things like that.

unknown

Do you look quiet? Good job.

SPEAKER_00

Oh shit, okay, mm should we not say. Oh but he's in the same people. Wonderful comic for this. Yeah, doesn't that just make them those since it does that? He's like Uncle Sam, the eagle. Yeah, yeah.

unknown

What the fuck are you doing? Me? Yeah, who's that?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, okay. Um, yeah, so he's still going all weekends to the shows and to, you know, meet back at the shows. Um, but there'll be other questions. Why are you doing that? Mind over your. I need to know what you're doing every weekend and why you haven't invited me. Like, what the fuck are you doing every weekend anyway? Take me with you, you still have it. So, uh, he graduated in 1951, and after he graduated, he kind of just left. And like none of his friends across meet everyone from him again. And he did this quite often. But as you say, it's not just a very airstyle move, it's just uh just a loose. This is like, especially generally, just like your book. And there's a poof that got in like, oh my gosh, really real? I'll be careful you keep in the red on your right. I just saw it or red and like, uh uh, um, talking or no, let me give it like a poof. Um anyways, that's the story. Now if he took a uh pretty often, he would just like be somewhere doing something, and then nobody would ever hear from him again. Like he was a car. Um so after he graduated college, he felt that the history of the world was hinging on the outcome of the Korean War. Um, there were arguments with his brother, Jimmy Brother, who's Robert. Bill? Is Bill sweater Robert? No. Bob, Bill's later. What do you think about that? Hold on.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I shouldn't put isolate cuts. I'm making a lot of noise. Yeah, here's Robert. Okay, well, Swap for Robert. Somebody in this.

unknown

He's called Bill.

SPEAKER_00

This is the king's robber. Oh, yeah, it's not Bill. Um disgusting. Okay, you won't understand. I don't understand. That Bill's not Sharper Robert. How dare you? Um, but also, like, when I started his military stuff, I put in both butters. Baby! Military!

unknown

Yay!

SPEAKER_00

Oh sorry, the key pistol, so he's not special. No, he's a military game. Yeah, he's a military game. They don't say no. He's he's fine, he's man's hand. Um, so there were arguments with his brother, um Harvey believed the communists needed to be stopped, but his brother said that US had seen enough bloodshed from World World War II about Hardy was turning into another quote, flag waver like his father. Um, and Hardy became more stubborn, and he ended up joining the 80 three months after that. Um, so he this little find out um at his brother's wedding, because he was in the eating his brother's wedding, um his parents his parents were so proud, like watching him dance with all

Navy Life, Cruising, And Discharge

SPEAKER_00

of the ladies at the wedding. The older relatives started mentioning he needed to think about settling down and trying to license his own.

unknown

Yes, yes.

SPEAKER_00

But back to the baby. Um, he rose through the ranks very quickly. Um, within eight months, he rated a job at Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. Um, his rise to the ranks were communication officer, Lieutenant Junior Gray, and she's probably officer of the USS Tier Wake, uh, which is the aircraft carrier based in San Diego that patrolled the Pacific. Can I have two at me? That means you can, but I can't answer it.

unknown

Cool.

SPEAKER_00

Uh that's one thing I've realized as we you know go deeper into these war things. I usually do like social consequences of things when I'm gonna write it. And I'm like, I'm trying to tell you about what kind of boats they have, and I'm like, oh, I can tell you what they told you is I think you could picture a real big boat. Yeah, no, I he runs the boat, I don't know. The man with the fancy hat. I should have looked up like each one of these hours, like it's gonna be asking me. He says, Well, it's kinda complicated, and he goes into all the complications and I just my brain just like yep, short time, like, you have to get that. Um, anyway, keep a bit important guy. Uh, he was fine to think he got the job uh because he coached the ship's wrestling team to a championship. I'm sorry. I thought he just played football. Is he also a wrestler?

unknown

What if that's not? What does this happen? Why did he become a wrestler?

SPEAKER_00

I think it does make sense. I mean, I'm gonna want to coach the men's wrestling team because I don't I mean, yeah, because he figured out how to wrestle. Okay, so he learned wrestling. Um he coached the ship's wrestling team into a championship. Amazing, okay, football, yeah.

unknown

Yeah, multiple, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Multiple shorts. Um so yeah, see he read a few right wrestling enough to coach. Uh he also found out that in a BC wants deep sea tight. Um, he's gonna write on to teach younger sailor how to manage the other super old diving suit. You're imagining what I'm imagining, right? Yeah, with the big metal head and the gray in the front and the thing that looks like it's made to think you're down to the bottom of the ocean.

unknown

Yes. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um he would have to teach younger sailor how to manage because it's not easy. How much you mind the baby? Sir. Um, anyway, yeah, City Park is these younger sailor's how to walk around on the ocean floor and do stuff in these funny. Um uh so he was an officer, uh he had the privilege of living in an apartment off base in San Diego.

SPEAKER_01

Not a new Blash in Central Park, but in Central Park. Oh, yeah, this is that.

SPEAKER_00

Uh he and his gay pals would spend the weekends carding in this apartment, and they would go cruising straight near the base for heatchacker heat tracking sailors. Um at this time it just sounds so true crying, you know. No, like, no, there's some types of like doing it in his life, I was like, um, this isn't okay. Like, they were found cruising, looking for heat chapters. Like, just like at hand where you see it. Yeah, lotta D Ofers, sorry. So, this kind of explains it, it kind of not. So, um, at the time the large amount of men are reading for career and put a strain on the housing market, mm-hmm, and sailors were allowed to sleep on streets or on floors at the local INCA. So hardly parals what it proves and asked guilty sailors if they wanted to sleep in the bed instead of the floor. There's only one bed in the time there. Oh, I see it. Okay. That feels like a setup.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It doesn't really seem to have you.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah, there's some sketchy things in here.

unknown

And I'm like, oh. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

But he does two cuts. Mm-hmm. And he says, Tree girls and life with only one bed. He he knew immediately what was going to happen.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

When you pick him up, would you rather sleep in my bed on the floor? Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he says, Well, you have to have ideas or something.

SPEAKER_00

The bag would be my bag with me also in it. Um, would you like to do a little spin if I have to? Big spoon, that's also for um, definitely that's work.

unknown

Must work?

SPEAKER_00

Um, anyway, it's a new knife for a chance to get your card. That's true. Don't bring a knife into the bag, you know. Um, so Harvey began to lose his body islands for the baby. And he pushed your eyes over to kick orders from demonstratable assholes, and he began to realize his future was not. Well, that'd be bad at the point. So after three years and eleven months, he also read a month early due to his model behavior. He was disarrolling discharged due to his sexuality. Wait till you figure it out. And he's got a gay car using his mouth face. Must it be real? Who did he invite? I'm sure someone went and called. Oh, such a disciples. Yeah, okay. Can't trust him. Yeah. Um, at the time the military did this to many days, as we talked about. Um, and this led to untold numbers of men living in disgrace and would often uh lead to suicide. Um, children wearing side. Can't remember the fact that we're just I don't know what she does. Uh so right after the maybe maybe time. Um in early 1950s the gay bars were illegal, and even serving drinks to a gay person was illegal. Mm-hmm. Um, bars, parks, and even private parties were often raided by police at the time, which would lead to uh legal ramifications, these people lost their jobs in trigger worrying, and he died by suicide. Uh, because once you were arrested for being gay, that was kind of it, right? They were allowed to call your employer and let them go and just want to push it. Um, but Hardy at this time was very good at keeping up with some double life. Um if he was somewhere that was raided, he would leave quietly for no one with medicine. Um, he wouldn't try to argue with police or help others, he would simply just flip out the Yeah, I get it, but like I'm down, you know? Um if I do that situation, I think probably that's the same. No, I told you if you were in that situation, you'd probably see that police. I'm in that situation, I would freeze and like click off. Then we killed that one area. That's my brother flight, but I'm just freeze. It makes sense. If I have chance to flight, I could take that. I would like to, but my brain does not work in situations like that.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like if if there would be like a shooting at the hospital, like I'm also just be standing and come on with it okay, like, oh god, they're shooting us!

Meeting Joe And Uneasy Power Dynamics

SPEAKER_00

Suppose literally have to grab me. I feel like you would do something else, just the change in circles. Yeah, I would pull like a like a Stephen who's walking around in circles. Do you have a fire of these to do that? No, Steven? Walk around in circles? Yeah, 'cause he got really anxious in crowds. And he would start walking around in circles. And I always thought it was so funny, like I was under now and all around like that's fucking kidding. Also the anxious in clouds, Steven, I'm so sorry I like Oh shit. Anyway. Yeah, so he was a sneaky little sneaky little queen and you would just move just Irish the bike. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Um in 1990 1990. Nope.

unknown

Nineteen? Nope, hold on.

SPEAKER_00

It has to be 19 something. 5016. In 1955, that's a little bit earlier. A little bit, just you know, right, 40, 30 years. Um, in nineteen fifty-five, one nine, five five, Cardi met his first serious mother.

unknown

If I can't speak, that's fine.

SPEAKER_00

That's right. I guess I just shouldn't talk. You're right, you shouldn't. Um, since you met Joe Campbell at Reese Park in Peru in a day section. Maybe day section. I hope you're gonna just like understood. This is where you gave people hanging out. I don't know. Um, Joe was 19 at the time. Cardi was 25.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

I wrote kind of predatory, and then I put fuck question mark. I mean, yeah, yeah, it's it's weird. Um anyway. Um, I feel like I know. Is that bad mod? Yeah, we could date on that when you were like 17, and then like when we didn't start dating. Yeah, yeah. The reading thing always closes now. Yeah, slavery. Um, anyway, uh, so Joe had this comb back here, this little curly in front, and he said, Yeah, this is like uh Junge Rupez, yes. Uh he looks like James Dean, but according to him, oh yeah. So, uh a little bit about Joe. Um, so he was introduced to the gay life at theater in Chicago's south side, where he would quote, duck under old men's coats for a quarter at nine years old.

SPEAKER_01

That's an introduction to the gay life, not being pretty called.

SPEAKER_00

That kind of according to Joe, now this is introduction. Like I said, the author of this book, America sheet, the tradition.

unknown

Same.

SPEAKER_00

I want to leave. Yeah, I also want to leave. I'm like when I was reading this part of the book. I was like, I don't want to be here right now. It's just so oh, interesting. Look, uh, it's a Ruby. Are you losing?

unknown

Come here. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my so fast. Wait, go! Okay, just aside, everybody, my dad absolutely loves loves uh car. He is obsessed with car. I don't know what the fuck happened, but it's it's it's a crazy story. So if you want to hear it, um ask us about it and we'll we'll do like a little story, story time, and we can tell you how why my dad loves cars so much. But it's yeah, also Ruby is kind of stressing, so that's why we're talking about cars. Uh oh, but back to the other thing. Um, because it doesn't matter. Yeah, he's about too much. Um, I'm not done here. It's insane. Like, so he's saying, Oh, this is my first introduction to to, you know, sexuality at nine with adult men. And it's like, I just I I think that it's put as, you know, it's always the back of like the person's the younger person like, oh, it's the introduction to sexuality. No, it's not. But being prey upon it, that's not like like that's not normal. And it's not an introduction to sexuality. That is being preyed upon. Yes. And based off the crime, because like in 1955, he was 19, so this is 1945. And I know the crime doesn't necessarily matter, but like sometimes in that context, you have to remember, like, there's less language for it, for sure. Yeah. And I'm sure like I don't think that like he's saying anything wrong by saying that that was his introduction. Yeah. But it's just coming from, you know, a more uh modern perspective, it's just it's so frustrating to be like, no, you were a child, but I was an introduction that was fucking wrong. Just so you're aware, that's not right. Yeah, it's it's very unsettling. Like a lot of these lies, like, not only you know, Harvey's introduction, but like a lot of his partners kind of go they go a little bit into like their lives as well, and it's the same thing. I'm just like, geez, Christ, dude. Like, uh, yeah, anyway. So that was his nine-year-old introduction. He was Bellows because I could play with the girls. Um, because he was jealous that they could play house without being judged. He just wanted to get the house with the girls. Oh, I just wanted to be asswis. Yeah. Um, the boys in the neighborhood with him and then take him hard first into a judge. No, I really feel bad for it for the fact that I just wanted to find him and give him a hug. Yeah, yeah, me too. Yeah, if you're not watching YouTube and they can see how faces.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It really bounced me out. Like I hate when people just I just put a business for. So because he was, you know, being beaten up and it's very chasty, this is how he likes he could get a tension and section from then for without being beaten. Oh, I hate that. I hate all of it so much. It's cherish, I know. But I said I want to find him. I don't know if he's around, but at the age of 14, he discovered there were other boys, boys who like him, uh, when he met two friends with the mid names, Miss Bay and Lady Banna. Justin Janet. And now we have such a shopping thing! So he writes there's like people like him and not use two super awesome friends. He is um, Miss Thane is made by many. It's literally thing to Miss Faye. So they introduced him to, you know, real this was his real introduction to homosexuality. Yeah. Um, true and authentic, and yourself and yourself, yourself, exactly. Um, so that's just a little bit about Joe. Um, so that's him, King Harvey meeting in 1955 at the gay park, gay park of the park, Stevie. Um at first Joe did not notice Harvey. Um, but from Louis Kidd looked straight. He called playing why isn't that a baby and a gay section? Not clear, I mean he's not quite notable. Yeah, many people call him Glumpy. I call him Glimpy, yeah. Um, okay, so this is a little confusing. The book kind of confused me, and then also made me kind of worried about Harvey, but oh, okay. From the book I read, it seems like if Harvey overheard me, uh, overheard Joe and his friends talking about the gay bar they were going to go to. If you write this a question work? Because in the book, Joe literally says, I don't remember seeing him at the park, I don't remember seeing him on the bus on the way. So it doesn't matter. So this is going to be here. I said, does not matter. If you're gay or straight, it's like Hardy Jim just went to her work until she eventually gave an likelihood harassment. Yeah, I think she's gonna name her socialized. I think so. Yeah, she's like a donor hand on the bus, like with us going to the bar, but he remembers it at the bar. Yeah, so I just hope this completely and I was like Cardi. Didn't you have a topic boundaries?

unknown

I think so.

SPEAKER_00

I think so. Um anyway, so they danced together at the club, and then she went home with him, and in the book it says the man virtually ordered Joe to have sex with his quick decision called Harvey realized Joe was the lover for him. Two weeks later, Joe moved in. That's weird is so quickly. The man ordered Joe the man Harvey. The man ordered Joe. Basically. So basically basically, ordered Joe. Okay, virtually, yeah.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

And then Hardy decided that. And then Joe was like, okay. And Harvey was like, You're my forever.

unknown

Mm-hmm. Okay. Yep.

SPEAKER_00

Uh Joe later described that it was a selection, basically. Joe made someone to take care of him. Hardy found someone that needs. He said, Joe said, quote, Harvey selected me and I would like it to be collected, unquote. I it's not gonna work for me. However, uh I mean, it does work for some people. It works for them, I guess. I just feel like it does work for some people how did the market be selected. It sounds like Joe really needed somebody who was very like forward, like, I want you to be here with me. Mm-hmm. Period. Mm-hmm. And Harvey was much more than Play for it. So Harvey's like, Joe, he does say, and Joe's like, sweet. Yeah, that's what I would like to do. Take a find me. So fine. Yeah, that's what you want. Yeah, um, yeah, I don't know. I'm just saying, I'll screw you there quickly. Oh yeah. Um, so at this time, Harvey was a math teacher and a masterball coach at high school. Uh him and Joe quickly settled into a safe middle class marriage. They were what? They settled into a safe middle class marriage. Can you explain that to me? They're not actually married, but they're like acting like a married couple.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Um, I don't understand how that but what? Uh they would go to the opera, they would go to LA, they would go to museums. Um, they were basically like your central like TV couple and if you want to call it, because they would even like baby talk to each other and be like, oh, we're not fine. Yeah, you know, that's cute. Yeah. So that was their relationship. Um, and then if we did ours, obviously. It's not like that might not be best for speed. No, it is not. Um Harvey was excited into Joe's family. Uh his grandmother mentioned, like when Harvey first met Joe's grandmother, she was like, she mentioned that she had met a Jewish man one time, so she used to. Oh grandma, yeah. I I it makes you want this one time, because everyone always says, Oh, grandma, you should have said that. So that's a generational that grandma's just saying shit totally out of pocket. And this way I'm like when I just say, hmm, when I'm okay, I'm grandma, that's just to do like you're like kids and like oh my god, what the fuck? I'm what is going on like you can't say that. I'm excited. I vomit them there. Also, do like, oh, something about this just like you said if it's just gonna be me, you're the problem. I do, I am. Um I have a dad's problem, but like I don't filter my thoughts, so we just vomit that was my face. Um, anyway, so grandma and I just am uh Harvey's game. Oh Hardy's family um accepted Joe. Um when I wrote this Friday, I said I'm not sure if she was added to them. I was just like, do they do the families know that they're the most family does? Yeah, okay. Cardi's family does not know.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

And that's it. So this is just my family Joe. Yeah. Um, the reason I said that you can later on the book it kind of jokes your head said lucky. Lucky that goes. Probably. Um, Hardy's brother seemed uncomfortable around Joe. Uh but me was more concerned that Joe was too skinny. Oh, mama made me. Look, I don't care what your orientation is, is that you are too skinny. We can talk about the other thing you like after you down this video. Until then, I was here where I didn't. In 1957, which is the bottom one. I have to mention that because I didn't enjoy CDS. Anyway, in 1957, uh Hardy hired a fishing career, which is also a card, he's tried it shit very quickly.

unknown

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

So he hired his teaching career, which could have been destroyed at the school founder of massose sexuality. Uh so he decided, they were going to look at sales. Oh, okay. Okay. I don't know why guys would lie. Um, but Hardy struggled to find work due to his religion. He was able to find a job as an assistant client manager at a Jewish-owned target store, but soon lost that position when the boss's son graduated and he did a job. Yeah. Uh the next job he found was earning sewing machines to families that can afford them. Oh, okay. So he would sell them, and after a few ten minutes they would default machines for reconstruct. Um Harvey hated it. He hated this job and made him sick. Um, that was the quote only job they would let a Jew have Dallas. So something maybe over here. Dallas is not the right place. He was not because you go after New York, especially after maybe ask her first time attack. Oh no! Mm-hmm, maybe, uh me. Um, so yeah, they moved back to New York. Harvey got a job as a actuarial statistician at the Great American Insurance Company, and yes, I did look at the person that applies statistical methods and probability theories to assess and qualifyers, financial, and insurance methods. So I'm like 100% not smart for that. Like, no, no, it it doesn't matter how I apply my brain. Did you give me like a bacteria plate and I can tell you what the bacteria is? If you don't know that on my enough, it's just like that's not how you want to apply it. I don't know this is how it's not how my brain works. Uh-huh.

Domestic Routine, Love Notes, Hidden Life

unknown

No.

SPEAKER_00

Um anyway, he got a he's created something on. Um, Joe got a job at Jill's furniture. Oh, okay. And they were able to get a nice apartment on 96th Street in Central Park West, which is the upper west. Mm, fancy. Yeah. Uh Joe decorated the house. The Harvey bought a tattoo can't say Bill. He said she's a big though. Um, better tattoo can I can say imagine if it's a story that's Harvey, you know, he must also have a big nose. So yeah, two can't also have big those. I do know. Um, so you're bigger and teeny. They were happier than ever at this time. Uh they fell into patterns, so Friday was for taking your laundry to the laundry mat and readings. Um, Sunday is lucky. Harvey made mozzar meal pancakes. Okay cool. Um, and they would lay in bed and it's precious, yeah. And they also found this one that could not fucking candle.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

The game was like, What is this lady in battle day? And just bread box. I was like, I can't be here anymore. I need to move. So I could do that. I mean he could flip your tier thing. Sometimes he's like, You said you're gonna have later, and I can read this for three hours. No, let's go. Which is funny because it's the opposite. Joey needs to be constantly like, no, let's just be right here in sleep for in the whole day. Um, but so here's a poem that Harvey wrote to Joe because he was just so in love with Joe. This is actually very cute. He wrote the poem cracking.

unknown

Uh, okay.

SPEAKER_00

Um, this is from 1958. To my Joe Sam, dude he gave himself like nicknames. Um, it explains the Sam part by it's still completely scientists. Okay, to my Joe Sam. To me, you are my warrior, you are my night, you are my day. Made the many, many days and years past pleasantly, happy and rewarding, for we have many years to spend together. The first two have swept by, and with each other I have found that in with each I have found I love you 355 days more than 365 times. Uh harder minimumus, minimum minimum yes. Harder ominium. Your doll baby fan. Hardy's hand.

unknown

Who does have a big?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, those are everything for each other. Okay, so I'm fine with columns, one of the mini columns now Harvey wrote not a cute lightly hardware camera. I'm just like, oh wait, what? Well, you're saying there now.

unknown

What the fuck?

SPEAKER_00

Um, me. Um, yeah, so they were just so in love and so happy everyone comes so great, um, until.

unknown

Oh, okay. Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_00

So hard to get everything together. Until me, even later than matching after hands and crocheted booties, but they made sure not to call that they were homosexuals because it would kill her. It actually knows! That's matching booty. Adorable can't tell mom she doesn't know. I think she might. I think she kinda does know though, actually. Uh he's a pretty good. Mama knows. Mama really knew. She has matching afterns and booties. Well, she goes, Mama gives you extra money to go to the opera every week. Yeah, but she did warn him about those people called. This is true, yeah. This is true. I don't know. Well, I guess maybe that's what she did now. But she does know. But she doesn't know. They've been living together for they have years. We have a pet who can.

unknown

It's name is Bill and Bill after his brother.

SPEAKER_00

So, I mean, I feel like I feel okay, so um, yeah, today we didn't break a relationship with great. Um, Harvey also had a little temper, uh, which pops up quite often. Um, so one time, um, there was somebody that yelled at them when they were walking down the street and they called them the axe flare. Harvey reached into the car, this person was hand, grabbed the dude by the collar, and yelled at the side of his home. And she shoved him till the chair trampled. Honestly, I'm not mad.

unknown

No.

SPEAKER_00

I don't think this doesn't sound like a temperature the sounds of justice.

unknown

Just that way.

SPEAKER_00

Um, you're not like this part though, because you're like, uh sorry, everyone mess up. Um she was also very nice that you're like this because it's like well too. She's military, you don't love some years because you too are that way. Um he is very military about anything related to Jews.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

So one time Joe had a German friend over for dinner, and Harvey quickly began to talk about the colour craft. He asked the friend, and that's wait, okay. He asked the friend what they thought about Blue King Belt, and when the friend's friend explained he didn't know about the camps until after the war, Harvey lost. He was on a fucking rampage. So he started screaming at this person asking Harvey could have weird like how did you live in Germany and not know what was going on, or not be aware of the carriage, he asked. Huh? Huh? And so Joe, terrified of what was happening, we're really dead right now. Looked at Harvey and said, He had a persecution complex. And then Harvey just retired and quite calling his persecution complex? Wait, Harvey had a persecution complex? Yeah, no, just said that to Harvey. Then Hardy was a job with it. He did. Um anyway, so yeah, um, also around this time he got a new job. I'm gonna decide how to put it in the paper. I don't think, okay, because he's already defined the stripes. Right, you're right, sorry. Um he can get in the shop. Yes. Um, but as you can tell, Hardy really likes to argue, especially about politics. Um at this time he was a staunch conservative. He was looking forward to very goals in a 1964 Republican nomination.

unknown

I thought he wrote that.

SPEAKER_00

Well, just imagine things. Like uh chief through into the act, you know what I mean? Um, right, so by late 1962, what is his job again, and great. Um, and unfortunately him and Joe's relationship also ended. Was it because he assaults their friends and party-but you can't go open to the book, and just when it's fine over is without the being you after being German. Um, so this is like super shit how their relationship is a little line that ends my part one. Um, this one yeah. Okay, um, so Harvey really just like walked into a living room one day while Joe was ironing or something, and she just looks in and asks if he had found that moving out. Probably not, Hardy.

Temper, Politics, Breakup, And Part Two

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and stuff with Joe said she was like, no, and he's like, well maybe you should. And then a few weeks later, he went up. Yeah, poor Joe. Mm-hmm. How do you think it's a dick right now? Joe's at the surface.

unknown

Um yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So moving out. Uh no, I'm ironing my shirt, actually. Why? I think you should think about moving out. I think you need to get the fuck out though. Um, that's how the relationship had been and maybe they said. Um, because there was such a chair in the middle, man. Yeah. Yeah, the case has 1930s. I'm not gonna. I don't know if you need to use a dirty though.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, yeah, so his relationship with Joe was more as a relationship together. Um, how old it is? From 1955 to 1952. Seven years.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, but for part two, um manifest.

unknown

I don't know what we're manifesting.

SPEAKER_00

Part two. Yes, for manifesting part two. Um so part two, I'm thinking about asking cards this could be like uh a bonus because I want this to come out before G ends. Okay, create, you know, title. Um, but we can look like this all the time. It's true, we can. Um but anyway, so part two we're gonna get into um his next couple relationships. Um, yep. Uh his next couple relationships and it's like a lot of drama and how you figure out that San Francisco is the place that you want to be. Um, and then obviously his political career answers that. Questions, comments, concerns? Um questions. Uh, I think it's a candidate. That is he's he's he's a dick, unfortunately. It's unfortunate specific politician, though. You're a great cause. Is it? Um comments. Concerns, um What about the trip in? It said absolutely nothing about Bill. Oh my god, what happened to Bill? I don't know. Okay, I'm concerned. I think probably Joe got it in the breakout because it never mentions Bill every again in this book. We should I can hope that Joe checked Bill.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

In New York. He's not too already. Oh, that's funny. Um, all right, so that's that's all I answer um the part one, because it's like actually a little bit longer than I thought it would, so um can't do my here. Um yeah, so if you also listen for watching, um follow us on Instagram at thatselmac underscore podcast direct. Uh you can email us um stories or thoughts or things you want us to cover um in the future, uh that so macready podcast at gmail.com. Yeah. And then we also have a Facebook I didn't keep not even.
