So, did you know that one of the most famous holes in golf was basically an accident? I did not know which goal. So, when the players' championship course at TBC Sawgrass was being built, architect Pete Dye originally planned the 17th hole to be a par three, but it was just supposed to be a normal par three with a tiny little pond in front. But during construction, the crew started digging all the sand out from the area to build spectator mounds for the course. And as they dug, the hole got bigger and bigger, bigger. And eventually it led to a huge surrounding pit where the quinteent green sat. But guess who was the one who was like, ah, just leave it there, fill it with water. No idea. It was Pete Dye's wife. So Pete Dye's wife, Alice Dye, was just like, no, it looks amazing. Just fill the whole thing with water and it'll look like its own island, even though it's not an island. And so they left the green exactly where it was and instead filled the entire pit with water. And then we get the most iconic, one of the most iconic uh holes in golf.
SPEAKER_02I did not know that, and that needs to be talked about way more, considering how iconic that hole is.
SPEAKER_00I feel like they spend hours each player's tournament talking about this hole, and that never gets brought up. That's a crazy fact. I mean, that is such an iconic thing to not only the TBC Soccer ass, but like Pete Dye's, you know, architecture. It's always daunting, it's always scary off the T. And he was just going to put a little pawn there.
SPEAKER_02That's very cool. Well, they they did the right thing for sure.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, cheers to Alice Dye. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_01A local municipal golf course says it's been overrun by what some are calling quote golfers. Has the game grown too much? Do we need more scratch golfers? I'm telling you, hack slow the game down. You can't grow golf if people are chunking it into the weeds all day. Scratch player?
SPEAKER_00Hey everybody, it's Des and welcome back to the Hack and Scratch podcast, episode number eight. Casey, things are really starting to heat up this weekend, and we feels like we're starting to begin the March to major season. How are you feeling?
SPEAKER_02I'm feeling great. Yeah, I would say we're in the pre-major season with some people.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Exactly.
SPEAKER_02And I think there's a press conference coming tomorrow regarding the fifth major, and you know, we'll see what they say about it. But it's going to be a good week.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I just as much as I was a proponent for it being the fifth major, I still I just can't see them ever doing it. I it's just it's kind of set in stone now with the four. We'll see if that ever changes. But um what I do what I will say is, you know, all the arguments being talked about how it's a better test for golfers and a more emblematic of the PGA than than the PGA championship. You know, I I kind of see it. I mean, it's it's an incredible tournament, no doubt. But I do I actually do like the idea of bouncing around to different properties in different golf courses. I mean, obviously we get the staple of Augusta and that's awesome. But the other traditions with the other three majors, I love that we bounce around and see different venues and rotate. So I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, I agree. It's especially, you know, with the open, it's just any course you're excited to see them play at every year. You know, maybe a little more love is is made towards St. Andrews or something like that. But regardless, the United States has their versions of it. And to keep it at sawgrass is something near and dear to a lot of the players, especially because it's pretty much down the street from where a lot of them live. So it kind of feels like a home tournament. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, agreed. Well, also in Florida this week was some pretty great headlines. I I watched a good amount of golf, especially on Saturday and Sunday. It was an amazing comeback and it's, you know, a semi-collapse. I will say a conservative collapse, maybe by Berger. But Akshay Batia takes down the 2026 Arnold Palmer invitational signature event, takes home that$4 million, all those FedEx Cup points, and leaves Daniel Berger just finishing just short of accomplishing something pretty amazing. And it's it's it's great to see both happen. It's great to see Daniel Berger back in contention and doing some great things, but also amazing to see one of its rising stars, Akshay, take it home. What did you think of the weekend?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, I kind of thought that Berger had it all together throughout the whole weekend. I mean, to have that lead um pretty significant. But what we have seen repeatedly this season is players that have a large, you know, 36, 54 hole lead don't always keep that lead on Friday, on Sunday. One example being Jacob Bridgman, who had to, you know, kind of pick it up and just get out of there. Uh so you know, it's not surprising that it's pretty daunting to go wire to wire. And then if you're uh you have an opponent like Akshay Batia who just has he was leading the field in under par on the back nine out of anybody that week. So he probably knew that the back nine fit his game well, which is why he was able to, I think, get four birdies in a row, catch burger, force the playoff, and you know, tie it up. So really, really cool golf to watch, very entertaining. You know, we don't like to see blowouts just because it's not as exciting and all that, but I thought Akshay did a great job keeping us cool after some some stumbles throughout the round. And props to Daniel Burger too, who is a PGA tour winner, taking a long break after injuries and is playing really good golf.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. No, it it was it was something to watch. I made out all right. I did uh I did a little Akshay bet at 1101 at uh on Saturday before the round started and uh and cashed that. And so that was uh that was pretty great. I did think about placing a big money bet on Burger to not lose it. Very happy I didn't go with that. That would have been a really rough watch Sunday to get all the way down to the 17th hole to finally lose the lead. But yeah, I just it's one of those, you know, classic things of when you're in a position to win and you know you can do it one of two ways. You can either go out there and really win it, or you can protect your lead and win it that way. Both are totally viable, but it just seems like more often than not, if you try to protect it, it always seems to slip away. So I just again, it goes back to the how much I think golf, maybe more than any other sport, is such a mind game.
SPEAKER_02Definitely. I mean, to to have the knowledge of I'm playing so well and I'm leading the field alongside of one of the top-ranked players is getting hot. How do I stay in between that? It's a very hard thing to do. So, you know, great golf all all around. Yeah, it was it was a it was a good tournament to watch. There was a little bit of controversy around Akshay's putter. This kind of has been in talks the past few weeks on the tour, the idea of anchoring your putter, where it's basically you hold it up to your chest, and so you kind of have an anchor point so you can twist more like a pendulum. I think he addressed it a couple weeks ago and being like, definitely not doing that. I don't think he is also, but some people were pointing out that if you're touching your shirt, we can't tell if that shirt is touching you, which is a good point. All that's to say is I don't think he was anchoring his putter. I think that's just kind of a cheap shot that some people want to use to stir up controversy. But it also I was curious. What do you think?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's tough because it's like it's a limitation of your apparel, most likely, unless you're, you know, certain players on tour, your your shirt ain't gonna be super skin tight, especially around the chest. So the fact that you're having to lean over, it's gonna naturally sag and droop. Nine times out of ten, touching your shirt is not touching your body, but it could. And so I, you know, it's a fair point. Honestly, honestly, it's a it's it's a very fair point. And you know, I I don't know, as a casual golfer, I've never loved the long putter. It just seems so out of place. It's like, you know, I get it, it it's very useful and it's it's legit, but it just seems out of place. It seems like, oh, we forgot that in the rule book. Like, you know, it just doesn't look right. And so I've never been a fan of it, but at that same time, I will die on the hill that Akshay is not cheating on this one. Yeah, I agree. Yeah. Well, good. Um, we leave our little bit of controversy and we go over to Liv, who's having quite a you know, great season and and a lot of great storylines and headlines, and they got another one this week. Uh, I think over two years um since since John Romm took down a tournament anywhere, maybe, um, he wins with uh a 664 in the final round, fishing 23 under par and gets the win in Hong Kong. I can't even believe it took the it's it's been take it's been taking this long for John Rom to get back on the in the winner's circle. He's a phenomenal golfer. I don't know what's going on, but thank God that that drought is over.
SPEAKER_02Definitely. I I think one of the contributing factors of him not winning is downing a dozen donuts with Bobby Berger on the first hole at Silverleaf. That could play a factor.
SPEAKER_00Sure.
SPEAKER_02But other than that, I mean, yeah, it's crazy that he's definitely one of the top five golfers in the world, and that may even be pushing the number down too much. And to be that long without a win is pretty surprising. So great to see him do well, you know, especially after he didn't really have a collapse either when Anthony Kim won last month, but you could tell he wanted that tournament. So he got back on the horse and he closed this one out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, seems like things are heating up for him. You know, we always talk about peaking at the right time. Masters is just around the corner. He's already got a green jacket, the pressure's off. Could just easily sneak in there and take it, especially with something we didn't even cover in the last PGA update, which is that Scotty Scheffler is a little bit broken, man. So he's he's opening up the door for challengers for sure for some of these big majors coming up.
SPEAKER_02Definitely. And in addition, we might get to this in a second, but Rory also tweaked his back last week or earlier, yeah, last week. And so now he's kind of on the fence either. So him along with Scotty, you know, they're probably the two more dominant players right now. And you're right, that door is wide open for anybody, let's say a Jacob Bridgeman, to come in and just sweep the field.
SPEAKER_00So, you know, I wouldn't put money on Jacob Bridgeman to take down the masters, but yes, uh uh, you know, never count it out. That'd be pretty good.
SPEAKER_02But yeah, the Scotty stuff is is a little bit interesting and it's been getting a lot of attention. I was watching live from the players today, and some of the the broadcasters were like, you know, we usually don't see this these many people, this many people around Scotty before a tournament. You know, it's like all the equipment people and the physios and all that. And I'm like, okay, we can calm down. Like they're not worried that he's crashing. He still led the field, and I think strokes gain approach or something last week. But yeah, he's not himself for sure.
SPEAKER_00Sure. Or at least not the himself that we got accustomed to for whatever, you know, 76 weeks. So yeah, you know, slumps are real, even happens to the best in the world. Hard to hard to say that even the way he's playing is considered a slump because it is still a lot of top tens, top twenties, and and and still some. I mean, he's you're watching some of this putting and he's lipping out on like every fourth hole. So it's it's that close to being nails. Anyways, back to Liv. Give the the microphone back to Liv. We uh we got a first team win for four aces, so led by Captain Dustin Johnson, it's got Thomas Dietrie, aka, and Thomas Peters. They win the combined team score with a 58 under. Sounds like your local member guest final score. Um 58 under, uh marking 975 days since they've last won.
SPEAKER_02That's crazy. Which, if I backtrack, that's like pretty close to the very first tournament of Live, if I if I think. So, you know, that's a long time. So good for them. Also glad that Anthony Kim contributed to that, you know, and that this win that he had wasn't just a one-off. He's playing consistently good golf. So pretty cool.
SPEAKER_00Agreed. Agreed. Um, any other uh highlights? I know you mentioned some story about Rom that maybe, you know, maybe that was the key to his victory this week.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, we've known forever that Rom is a stand-up guy, and I think him having ties in Europe, he had helped a number of people, I think maybe in their families, get chartered airplanes out of Dubai because of the issues going on in the Middle East. So it's like good good for him. You know, he's probably the highest paid one out of that whole bunch, and he wanted to do the right thing to help his teammates and his rivals and all that. So pretty cool that he was able to do that.
SPEAKER_00That's an awesome story. Very good guy. Love that he thought about all the others and took care of it. That's really cool. All right. Well, we got, you know, it's the first weekend I think we've had where all three of the leagues we cover had a decent headline. And so TGL as well, Jupiter Lynx versus the Bay Golf Club had quite the dramatic moment. Walk me through what you saw.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so this was the deciding match of who's going to the playoffs. And it was looking toward the end that uh the bay was going to pull it off. They were up 6-3 with three holes remaining. And so you knew that Jupiter Lynx had to use the hammer strategy in some way. So they were able to on 13, Max Homewith threw the hammer and got made his birdie to cut the deficit down to just one. But then on the next hole, they, as you know, if you throw the hammer before you start the hole, you can't decline it. So that's what they did on this par three. And Tom Kim stepped up, threw the hammer, you're down by one. It's now worth two points. He hits just a perfect stuck wedge and it spins back right into the hole for a hole in one. And I mean, they they went crazy. The stadium went crazy. It was really cool to see. My favorite part was they had a camera on tiger the entire time, and he he knew like it was coming, so he started to walk out into the middle of the field or whatever, and then you know, just threw his hands up when he did it. But you could tell he was trying to move slowly enough to not hurt his back or his leg or something. So he was kind of like stumbling, and really you could tell he really wanted to like jump in and celebrate harder, but he he was also quite reserved because he knows that he wants to play golf again. But that hole in one put them up by one, and unless I think it was Minwoo Lee had to go in and match with the hole in one, which he did at a great shot, but it wasn't enough. So pretty cool to go to use the hammer strategy that consistently and have it pull off, and they ended up winning the whole match.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. Seems like we've been seeing some more hole-in-one's at TGL. I feel like maybe that little dial on the uh old full swing golf monitor got turned down a little bit on the difficulty to make a hole in one.
SPEAKER_02I I'm not denying that because I think before that, Neil Shipley hole-in-one was the Justin Rose albatross. So I don't know. They're playing great golf.
SPEAKER_00Seems suspicious. Seems suspicious. Nonetheless, pretty cool moment. Honestly, if you had to pick anyone for that to happen to, Tom Kim's the right dude. That is hilarious. He lost his mind. So happy, so happy for him, but just generally, you know, just he gets pumped. So that was pretty cool.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that was a great time. Great one to watch, especially in those last few holes. And now Jupiter Links will go into the playoffs.
SPEAKER_00That's right. Moving right along, we had a busy week on uh golf YouTube. Start us off with always what we do, which is Bob Does Sports. They featured a video where it was a scramble, the three guys versus Brad Dolke. Obviously, big talked about name in YouTube golf ever since the internet invitational. I'll skip to the mid-part, which is all we got, which is Brad is getting his his butt handed to him. I think it was like seven, seven under versus three under at nine. But you know, they split it up. It's supposed to be on the other channel. They still haven't put it, it's been like six days. They haven't posted part two, and everyone's wondering what the heck happened to that that lost footage on the back nine. Um, so maybe we'll get the video that in time, but it's it is very odd that it's not being posted. Could be all a marketing strategy. Next one we have is Grant Horvat. I know you saw this, I saw this. What a video this was. It was the breaking Bob series, which I think is one of my favorite things, but it's how can Grant Horvat ridiculously beat Bob? And today or that day, he was playing blindfolded. So he had a little blindfold he walked around with the whole round and put it on right before he hit. And it's funny, you know, I didn't think this was going to be actually that hard of a challenge for Grant, but it was. It really was. Have you ever hit a golf ball blind?
SPEAKER_02You know what's funny is I used to uh I had a coach who made me practice shots with my eyes closed because he wanted me to get the feel of just trusting my swing. And yeah, it was harder. There's just something about the balance of it that throws you off. Uh so yeah, I mean, he did pretty good, in my opinion.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he struggled for the for, you know, he was struggling for the first few holes, then he got a little hang of it. But honestly, Bob was playing fine golf. He was playing fine golf until the thing that all humbles us is just one blow up hole, and it just happened to be the last one. Bob really didn't need much. I think he just needed maybe a bogey, maybe a double, could have easily won him the day. But Bob put one in the water and then put another one from the drop zone. And I've never seen someone fall to the ground faster than Bob after he hit before it even landed in the water. He knew it. He knew he chucked it. He knew it. And he fell so hard to the ground, knew it was over. How could you say YouTube golf doesn't mean anything? It was so it was such a bad collapse. I really felt for him, but makes for great entertainment.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was so fun to watch. And you could tell Grant was even shocked. It was like, how did he do that? Yeah, exactly. And it wasn't how how far do you think that was like 120 yards? It's just like a wedge over that. 110, maybe, yeah. Yeah. And to just hook it right in the middle, drop it and do it again is brutal. And I think he knew he was out of it because Grant at that point only needed like a double bogey to beat him. Yeah. So it's rough.
SPEAKER_00Rough stuff. My favorite industry social media team, Team Taylor made, released a new video this week. You saw it, walk me through it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So they it was kind of a they were filming the players during their practice round, which this was actually kind of cool because I don't think the Genesis was selling practice round tickets this year. And so it was, you know, pretty, it wasn't very crowded. There weren't a lot of people there. And they were basically doing a best ball. I think players were on different holes at certain times and they were just getting a feel of the course, but they were recording their scores, maybe with or without their knowledge. But it was just kind of cool to see them in the practice round kind of mentality. And I it just more relaxed, you know, they're not trying to do anything crazy, they're just trying to get a feel of what everything looks like and everything. But I like it when Taylor made releases this stuff. Um, because it's quick, you know, you can kind of get the gist of it pretty quickly and get a little behind-the-scenes stuff. So yeah, they they had that and then they haven't watched it yet, but they released like a three-hole challenge of Rory versus Scotty today. So I'm gonna check that out later, too.
SPEAKER_00Nice, nice. I love when they put together content with with all those sponsored Taylor-made players. It's usually phenomenal. Continuing on, we had Brad Dahlke. Man, Brad got some airtime this week versus Wesley Bryan straight up. Brad took another L. Uh, it was just a good reminder of what the difference is between a great, great YouTube golfer and a PGA winner. And so Brad ended up losing. Wesley, it's so funny. Like, he always talks a little trash, but he was backing it up. And like, yes, that was that was full Wesley Go mode with a little bit of trash talking sprinkled in there. So yeah, scary dude when Wesley's uh Wesley's going for it. And then you found out a really cool one, although quite depressing in my opinion.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I've been trying to branch out and find some uh other golf YouTube channels. And this guy, Jerome Ruffin, I'm gonna, I think that's how you pronounce his name. Yeah, he um he did this video zero to a thousand days playing golf, which is you know, what, a little under three years, third over three years? Plenty of time basically to he was he quit his tech job to focus on golf. And you know, you could tell in the video he was working with trainers, he was working with coaches. I think he he joined one of the clubs in the LA Valley um out a little bit. So like he had all the things at his disposal. All the resources, all the resources, all the good golf courses, the practice facilities and all that. And like the hook was like wait till the end to see like what my handicap is. And I was like, Oh, okay, cool. Like, I can't wait. I was expecting a little more, but he got to a nine handicap after the end from zero experience playing golf, you know. So we'll we'll leave it at that. But what what's your reaction to that?
SPEAKER_00Horrible, gut wrenching, disgusting. Want to throw up. Why's that? Because I will never find a thousand days to do golf at in any sort of capacity, let alone with all those resources at his disposal. Um so how am I supposed to get to a nine handicap? Is basically what I I say to myself. But, you know, I yeah, it's just it's That is golf right there. It is hard. Yeah, I I j I honestly I can't believe that that was the outcome. I tr I truly can't because in my mind, if you gave me a thousand if you gave almost anyone a thousand days and and and a ton of time and resources and practice, I feel like I don't know. I I don't know what like percentage of golfers are below a nine, but if I were to take a stab at it, I would say like ten, ten percent, ten percent are below a nine. And I feel like if you're if you're that dedicated, you're well above the 90 percentile uh of you know uh of of people and and effort being spent towards golfs. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know what to say. That that's quite shocking, but I I love the concept. I wish I could do that. I wish I could do a rebuttal video and see how low I get.
SPEAKER_02I want to do the same. What what do you think you think I could get to if I had that time and resources?
SPEAKER_00It's not as impressive because I will say the the idea of going from never picking up a club to anything is a huge chasm. Whereas you're now in the finite region of great versus even greater. So it's it's not that impressive. From what I hear, and you had that enough time, you'd be lucky to get to like a plus two, plus three, maybe. You'd be lucky to get a plus two. I think that sounds about right. Yeah. But I love it. I'm gonna go back and watch that and maybe bring a puke bucket next to me. The Bryson challenge this week was a breaking 50, which he's done many times. He has actually a seasons of it now, which is kind of crazy. But he did it with Brad Dolkey. There we go. So maybe Brad didn't post his video because he was just getting too much airtime other places. The unfortunate part about this one is he caught another L in the sense that they were nowhere close to breaking 50. And you know, Brad's a great golfer, supposed to be touted as could be on the pro circuit if he wanted to. Uh, I think a lot of like really good celebrities have done better than than Brad uh and Bryson. I mean, obviously, Steph is being the most famous one, did break 50. Actually, he shot a 48, I believe. And um, you know, he is not a professional or YouTube golfer. So interesting. But uh yeah, tough, maybe tough week for Brad.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, that or you know, the Oscars are coming up. He's getting best supporting actor for this week of golf YouTube for sure.
SPEAKER_00That's right. Well, good. That was a good busy week on YouTube golf. I know the week before that we said it was kind of dull. I think they made it up for it this week. Next, we have uh covering up what we've been talking about a lot, which is the players. Um, we have our picks for the players. It takes a well, well-rounded and sound-minded golfer to get through the players' championship and and the gauntlet, as we talked about last week. Obviously, some iconic moments happened here, probably none more iconic than Tigers better than most putt on 17, which I do you mentioned this before, but maybe it was on the video. But I do think equally as iconic, which doesn't get talked about as far as the phrases of better than most is how about in. Like I wish I had a jacket that just said how about in. I think that is a a great saying as well that goes in that call. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I would buy that. That sound that sounds like a great hat, sweatshirt, whatever. I like it. Sounds so good. How about in? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Honestly, there's a there's a laundry list uh of great moments that have happened at the players from people jumping into the water to crazy shots on on 18 as well, 17, some some iconic moments. Hopefully, we have a great tournament this weekend. Seems like all the storylines, all the wins this season so far have been leading up to a really fun and good season. So yeah, just walk me through. What do you think of this week as far as your picks?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, the the players is is probably the hardest one to pick somebody to be victorious because it's the best field. Anybody can get hot. A lot of people have played Sawgrass, they know it well. So that that's what makes this week a little bit harder. So, what I usually like to do in those situations, I look at the players who have been playing consistently well and were just waiting for their moment to pop. So my first one is Tommy Fleawood, just very consistent golf all across the board recently. And he would be in my my number one pick. And I know it's hard. Like I still I think some people still feel like he's still searching for his first win, even then, though he won the tour championship last year. I think he he knows he's got more in him. And so I would I would love to see him do well. Similarly, Shane Lowry, you know, we we talked about the collaps a few weeks ago, but still playing really good golf, staying very consistent. And I think he has a win in him very soon. And then lastly, it looks like I'm taking all the the guys from the UK, Bobby McIntyre. I like the way that he's been playing as well. And he's somebody that feels like is always there, like recently too. He's just near the top of the leaderboard. He is a great putter and just has a really solid head on his shoulders. And I yeah, so those are my three picks. I like them for odds, and I like them all as people.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I like Bobby McIntyre. I it is funny. So to get right into it, I too have Lowry, which is hilarious because I'm pretty sure I'm recorded saying three weeks ago when he collapsed, ain't no way in hell Lowry's gonna win a tournament for quite some time, if ever. So it is funny I'm back here. What got me back to him is his consistency at players. There's nothing like, you know, a collapse and going through that and then getting back to a place you feel somewhat comfortable at. And I believe he has like five stop top knees in a row at the players. And so clearly a place he's familiar with, clearly a place he likes. I I'm on Lowry as well this week. Maybe I'll do a top five to not have to take down the the win, but but just get a piece of it. I do think Morikawa is fit fit to do well here this week. You know, he hasn't had the greatest history here, never really been in contention to win it, but you know, he's back to playing some really good golf, great approaches. Seems like his mental game may be a little bit straighter, which, you know, it's all relative. Colin's probably got one of the crazier mental games, and it's all in his own mind more than anything. But it seems like he's settled with it, especially coming after the win. I I think there's a chance he gets it. And then a person who's won it before, Siwoo Kim, who's playing some great golf as well. And it's always nice to return to a place that you have won, held that trophy, and know what it takes to win on Sunday here. So those are those are my picks. I'm just excited. Great golf, great venue. Can't ask for more. Hopefully, we get some good weather uh and see a great finish on Sunday.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, this one's always super fun to watch. It's probably the one tournament where I'll watch a hole, like one stream, because you know they usually have featured groups, the main feed, and then one hole. So I'll sit there and watch 17 all day. That's fun. So that's really cool. Did you also catch uh they did an interview with Gary Woodland this week? Did you see any of that? No, I just remembered it. You know, Gary Woodland, who had brain surgery a couple years ago, and he came out and wanted to kind of do this interview with one of the broadcasters about how he struggled with PTSD on the golf course as well. And it was just like one of those very raw moments where he was saying, He's like, I can't hide it anymore. Like I've been struggling with this on and off the golf course. And he said it was like too much to just try and hide the things he was feeling while playing golf. And so he's doing this to maybe set himself at ease a little bit on the course. But Gary Woodland has always been one of my favorite golfers. I just think he's an incredible person. He is built like a tank and he could he just has such a cool golf swing. So overall, I just love the guy. And it was, I thought it was really cool that he came out and talked about the struggles he's had. And it just goes to show like everybody loves Gary Woodland. He said that people have been coming and being very supportive, you know, of him and everything. So I'm wishing him the best. And, you know, I I'm just I'm happy for him that he's being so open and honest. And I hope that other players follow suit if need be. But really cool moment. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I watched obviously his whole episode on full swing. Incredible story, um, incredible family, supportive. Yeah, pretty awesome. Well, good. Hopefully, we get some more inspiring moments come Sunday. Um, and uh, and we'll be watching. Next on the Pro Shop Drop, we don't have too much, but we have one that's definitely near and dear to your heart. Will you be picking up a Wilson Golf Zero Torque Butter?
SPEAKER_02I will definitely go and try it at the store. I am just, I've always been a huge fan of Wilson Anything. And, you know, it's funny because people don't think of Wilson golf as the golf brand that they want to go out and buy. But the thing that I do love is that they still have the claim to fame, which is more majors than any other brand, because Wilson was like the brand during the Nicholas Sam Sneed era, like all that stuff. And I'm like, hell yeah, go Wilson. Yeah, really, you know, flex that, even though they've kind of pulled back. It's been a while. It's been a while. Um, but they they they've been more consistently coming out with a lot of new equipment. And so this one, this they have two versions of this zero torque putter. And it's cool because you know they're a Chicago-based company, and each putter has a different name. I think the one we're looking at is called like the 616 or 600, whatever the area code is for that area. And basically it's a zero torque putter, which means it's going to give you less twist through your swing. Other companies have kind of jumped on that train as well. And so I just think it looks really clean. Like I think they're trying to do a mix of the tailor-made spider along with the lab butter. So they're they're doing a good job of trying to stay in the game, so to speak, at a pretty good price point. This is sitting at 200 bucks. I think this would be great for people to pick up who are getting into the game and want to try something a little bit, you know, with less face turning and all that. So yeah, I like it. I'm gonna try it out just to see what it's all about, but looks cool.
SPEAKER_00Nice, yeah. Um, looks great. And yeah, you you nailed it. It definitely looks like a little bit of a lab combo with a spider, which, you know, two of the hottest putters for the last five years, especially with the YouTube golf scene on the lab side. It hasn't quite taken over the pro side yet. But uh yeah, looks looks awesome, looks amazing. Can't wait to hear your feedback once you try it out. Yeah, let you know. All right, so that brings us to some of the games we have prepared for this week. A lot of them tied into maybe the players somehow. Um, we're starting off with a spend 10, and we're gonna try to spend your perfect players 2026. So the outcome. So I'm gonna give you$10. You're gonna spend it on four different categories. The four different categories are final pairing, the outright score, winner, and the numbers uh 17 hole highlight. So each one's gonna be one, two, three, four, five dollars, uh, and you have 10 to spend. So keep track, not a lot of money to spend. Here we go. The winning score will it be a little bit of a bud bath at minus five, a little easier at 10, 15, minus 20, or a record sending minus 25.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna go minus 10.
SPEAKER_00Conservative, good, still a great outcome. I like it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'm gonna play a little conservative so I can have some better picks later on.
SPEAKER_00Totally agreed. All right, so as we get a final pairing come Sunday, is it gonna be for one dollar two no-namers? Uh, for two dollars young versus an old player, always a classic matchup, three, two heavyweights. So we're talking top, you know, look let's call it 15 golfers in the world going to get it at each other. Are we gonna get a pairing of Rory versus Shane? Or for five dollars, the classic one we want, even though they're not in form at all, Rory and Scotty. It's tough.
SPEAKER_02I feel like there have been a few no-namers, so it's kind of what I'm expecting, but it's not really what I want. So I'm gonna I'm gonna say two heavyweights. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah. Yeah, I like that. It doesn't matter who. I would love that. That that's a great value at$3. Okay. Yeah. So then you get your winner. I threw this one out, which is is mean because I'm pretty sure he went to Georgia Tech. But Brian Campbell, winner, everyone's least favorite winner from last year, multi, multi-time winner of Brian Campbell.$2, Thor Bjorn Olison, aptly known Thor. Three, we get to run it back with Akshay Batia, back-to-back wins. Four, Dole Damon, and five is your choice of anyone.
SPEAKER_02Dang. I so badly want Joel Damon to win. Like the only reason, my reasoning is if he wins this, he's got a tour card for five more years, and we're gonna get to see him more. You know?
SPEAKER_00Can I sweeten the deal even more? Maybe. Did you see that Gino's back on his bag just for this week? Did see that.
SPEAKER_02I think this is gonna default my next choice, but yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna spend four on Joel because I want to see.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah. I mean, what what a players that would be. He can take off his shirt, he can jump in that water, he can do whatever he wants if he wins that, if he wins that on Sunday. And with Gino on his bag, I want nothing more than that to happen. All right, so I will give you your number 17 highlight uh in reverse order. So for$5, you could have done a plank hole in the one, which is a ball hit off the wooden plank on 17 and bouncing back into the hole. For$4, is just a standard hole in one, less hole in ones than you would have thought over the years. Honestly, uh, I was surprised. There's only been 24 in like the last 45 years. Um, so not a ton. Uh hole in three, which is a ball in the water, and then a hole in one from the drop zone. That has happened a couple times, and that is a classic. Uh, record setting number of balls in the water for the tournament. Do you know how many you would guess for the whole tournament? All the players, how many one tournament? Yeah. 50. 94. It was carnage. Absolute wins. It was carnage, 94 balls in the water on on 17. Uh how many of those were Sergio Garcia? Exactly. Actually, I I looked up the person who holds the most. I can't remember who it was. It I think it's I think it's seven, fourteen or something in in their career has been in the water. But this is also another record, which you're locked into, is five plus in the water on the same hole. And that's that's all by the same person. Same person, same hole, back to back, four balls in the water. Bob Tway, many years ago, hit four in the water, three from the drop zone. Brutal, brutal collapse. Um, but that's what you're getting. You're getting someone's gonna just absolutely tank it in five in the water. Hey, you know what? That's that's fun to watch. I don't think Trent from Barstool is coming out to play in the players, but maybe that's where you're gonna get it. Maybe Trent got a sponsor exemption, he'll hit five in the water for you. There you go.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. I can't stop thinking about Joel and Gino now. Like that could you imagine if they were to pull off that win? At least be in contention.
SPEAKER_00At least be in contention so I have something to move for come Sunday. That would be insane.
SPEAKER_02I I think people want to see them succeed again. For sure. Oh, yeah, I'm excited. That's gonna be a storyline I'm following. For sure.
SPEAKER_00All right, so for our second game, I'm gonna have you blind rank. We've been talking about what they could do with TGL to improve viewership and bring more people in. So I thought let's put it to the test. I'm gonna give you eight different things that you have to blind rank on ways to improve and boost viewership in TGL.
SPEAKER_02Okay, let's do it.
SPEAKER_00You ready?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00All righty. So allow average Joes, just random fans, the ability to enter a contest and compete weekly in a what would be called non-celeb shot. So they get to go down to SoFi Center and not play completely alongside, but hit a non-celeb shot.
SPEAKER_02I kind of like that. Like I'm wondering, I want them to put their name and handicap and like job up on the screen. I want to see that. And how many, how many do I have total? Eight. I'm gonna say six. That's good.
SPEAKER_00I like that. I like that. How about this next one? Women play with the men, so each side would roster at least one PLPGA player.
SPEAKER_02I feel like this should just be the way that it is already. I feel like this would be awesome rather than having two separate leagues. Um, I'm gonna say three. That's up there for me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Next one, inject the usage of celebrities in the weekly competition. So now we're pulling the Tony Roma's, the Steph Curries, we're inviting them to actually be a participating member weekly for the competition.
SPEAKER_02I'm putting that at two. Think like in order to get an audience, you have to widen the range of the people that can be a part of this so that, you know, hey, if Travis Kelsey wants to go up and hit a shot, people are gonna want to watch that.
SPEAKER_00So true. Really does move the needle.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It really does. Um, all right, next one. Allow for, and they've done this on the match, which you know, the match is very famous for starting off with Tiger Phil, but allow side bets and broadcast them. So players allowed to bet with each other um on closest to the pen, things like that at the SoFi Center.
SPEAKER_02Dang, that's a that's a really good one, too. I'm gonna rank that as high as I can without giving up my one spot. So I'm gonna say four. I like that idea.
SPEAKER_00Okay, good. This next one, inject the usage of YouTube golfers in the weekly competition. So just like we talked about celebrities, you'd have YouTube golfers. Does that move the needle?
SPEAKER_02You know, I I don't think it does because I think the people watching YouTube golf are already watching TGL and nailed it. Like vice versa, don't you think?
SPEAKER_00Nailed it. I totally agree.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Okay. I'm gonna put that down at the bottom at eight then. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Um this is a little out there. Let's just turn up the volume on the crazier outfits, and dare I say the dreaded golf jersey. Wow.
SPEAKER_02I think it would be entertaining, kind of like how uh in the MLB they have their City Connect, you know, yes style jerseys. Maybe for like one round. I think that would be cool. I don't think it's gonna move the needle, but I think it'd be fun to watch. Um, so I'll put that at seven.
SPEAKER_00Okay. This next one would be to bring golf legends as coaches. So we don't we have captains right now, but it'd be cool to to bring some legends uh alongside it. And yeah, there's no shortage of number of names that we could pull, but it would be cool because we don't really get to see their banter with the players anymore. So yeah, bring legends as as coaches.
SPEAKER_02I think that's a great idea. One because hate to say it, some PGA pros on the tour are starting to move over to the champions tour, and we don't see them very often. I would love to see a John Daly at TGL. How much fun would that be? You know? Exactly. Yeah, that's good. But I think I only have one and five left. So I'm going to save my last one for one. Okay. I'll put that aside.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. All right. So for this next one, what you do is you take the SoFi center and then you put a live bear in the center that is gonna maul the players as they're trying to get off shots.
SPEAKER_02So glad I saved my number one. It's another one because that's gotta be number one.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. If it worked for Will Farrell and SemiPro, I guarantee you it's gonna work for TGL viewership.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Just a bear and a tiger going at it, very symbolic, that'd be perfect.
SPEAKER_00That's that that is the TGL. Call us up. We got the answer. Put a tiger and bear inside the studio, and those golfers will be so entertaining.
SPEAKER_02And if they hit the ball in the water, it goes into a tank with a shark.
SPEAKER_00Yes. So we'll give you a nod, Greg Norman. Not a real, not a real shark. Greg Norman. Greg Norman will be in the tank. That's perfect. Even better. That's awesome. Okay, good. Well, let's move on to the next game. Okay. You got this one. This one's gonna be hard to get through without just pouring jealousy from my eyes, but let's go through it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so I thought, you know, one of my dreams is to take a big golf trip. I think we talked about this on another episode. And there is a website that kind of puts together these trips for you where they book the tea times, they book the uh hotels that you're staying at. A lot of them are on the golf courses that they're staying at. So I thought I'd give you uh five different ones, and just you can give me a guess on how much you think this costs. Sounds great. I'm excited. So the first one is the Florida swing. It's two nights. You play TPC Sawgrass and Dyes Valley course. And this is like just hotel and tea time included.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm gonna go 42.
SPEAKER_02No, I'll go, yeah, 4200. See, I thought it was gonna be that expensive. This one says it's only$1,800. Which I guess when you think about it, two nights for TPC Sawgrass and Dyes Valley course, like, okay, you may not be staying at the Ritz, but you get to oh, maybe I misunderstood.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so I might have misunderstood. Sorry. No, I thought it was. Two rounds at TPC Sawgrass. Because I know a round at TPC Sawgrass is now I think it's$1,100, which is crazy. Probably. Yeah. Okay. So this is this is a good deal. I like this though. Um$1,800, very, very respectable for that. I got pretty reasonable.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. For for two nights. I think you you probably get some discounts in there booking through them. That's probably why they can get it at that price. Uh okay, so yeah. Next one is Monterey. This is one that I've just always wanted to do. This is three nights at Pebble Beach, where you're gonna play Pebble, Byglass Hill, and Poppy Hills. You will not play Spanish Bay because I believe it closes next week for a 13-month renovation. Got it. So sorry about that.
SPEAKER_00Got it.
SPEAKER_02Okay. But you're still playing Pebbles, by Glass, and Poppy Hills.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, your uh hotel rate is definitely going through the roof for this one. Carmel is not an easy place to find a cheap room. I'll go$2,200.
SPEAKER_02Also a good guess, but this one you're right, is higher because you're staying at the lodge of Pebble Beach for three nights, and those three courses are gonna run you$4,000. That makes sense. Yes.
SPEAKER_00Staying at the lodge is got to be really expensive. Okay. But you know what? For someone who wants to play Pebble, and I hear one of the only ways you really can get on is to stay on property. I mean, that's honestly is probably as cheap as it's gonna come, which is crazy to think about. But okay, I like this. Keep going.
SPEAKER_02All right. Next one is Vegas. You know me, I'm a huge fan of Vegas. This is three nights at the Bellagio. You play Bally High Country Club, Reflection Bay, and TPC Las Vegas.
SPEAKER_00So not not quite the um Shadow Creek experience? No. Okay. Not quite.
SPEAKER_02And that's telling.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I I would love to hear what a package for Shadow Creek, the win, yeah, would run you. That that'd be the crazy one. Um all right, Bellagio 39th. God, I mean, this better not be that expensive. Uh, you know, I'd go, let's go$1,500.
SPEAKER_02$1,500. Ding ding ding. You ride on the money. That's wow. That's wow. I think that means in price's right terms, you get that one and one of the other trips for free.
SPEAKER_00Appreciate it. Uh, yeah, just send it on over. Uh yeah. No, that's great. Uh, I think that's pretty reasonable. Reasonable for a very cool Vegas experience. Uh, I think that's very reasonable. I'm pretty sure one round at Shadow Creek would cost you$1,500. Um Yeah. No, that's good. Okay, you got two more?
SPEAKER_02I got two more. All right. So this one is the Pinehurst package. And, you know, Pinehurst obviously has a few different courses. So this one they call their like unlimited or signature package. You play all 10. Yeah. It's it's basically like a what is it? Uh like a beer flight. Yeah. But it's four nights in one of their villas, which you share with other people, which is kind of cool. But for your own room, four nights in the villa, you get unlimited golf. Okay. Yeah. They say unlimited golf there is probably however many tea times you can make in those four days. So yeah, four nights unlimited golf at Pinehurst.
SPEAKER_00This is actually the first one that I truly would consider doing. Sounds pretty cool, especially with like that group villa aspect to it. I'll go. This is a tough one to price out. I'll go right on the money. I'll go$3,800.
SPEAKER_02Gonna run you a little more. This one for your own room is$5,700. That is pricey. That is real pricey.
SPEAKER_00Ooh, you're telling me I could have that Pebble experience for less? That's right.
SPEAKER_02But you could cut it down if you all cram into one room, if you want to do it Vegas style. That is tough though. That is pricey. Yeah. Yeah. But that's kind of one of those, I wouldn't say once in a lifetime, but it's kind of a cool thing to probably do once. And you're like, I'm good. Very cool. Yeah. Okay. So this one, if I had to pick a close second of the ones that I would want to do, this is the open tour. So this is open the open venues. It is one week, five rounds, including Royal Troon, Carnousti, Prestwick, and it says two others, which means probably nothing more exclusive than that, but you're still playing in the UK. You're playing some really nice courses that are on that level. It just seems like you gotta uh play maybe ones that are local but still really nice.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But you're there for a week. This is kind of a letdown, though. If you're making the trip trip out all the way to the UK, better be playing at least the new course, if not the old course in St. Andrews. Royal Tune is pretty amazing. Gosh, this one's tough. I'd go, gosh, I'd go 4,000. Gonna be a lot more than that.
SPEAKER_02No, they're claiming No, no. I know. They are claiming$13,000. In what world? In what? That's why I put it on here. There's like no way you're getting me to pay that much if I'm not playing, you know, the old course. I'd rather just go and play the old course personally.
SPEAKER_00100%. I 100% think that. Uh so interesting. Okay. Interesting. So what would you be your number one pick out of these ones? Yeah, I you know what? I it's crazy. And um, but I I just think I, you know, we've talked about this before, but I'm I'm of the uh mindset of playing some really iconic and just having these once-in-a-lifetime experiences and being able to say I played these courses, and so I'd have to do the Pebble package. Uh, and and seeing some of these things priced way higher than that, I think you're not getting a crazy um, you know, you're getting some decent value. I'd go, I'd go the Pebble experience.
SPEAKER_02I would do the same. So I say we go get get the family together, and we all go up there and the gals can get a massage at the lodge. That's right. The kids can caddy for us.
SPEAKER_00Perfect. That sounds good. That sounds good. We'll just save up for the next 10 years when the kids are 10 to to be able to do it. Perfect.
SPEAKER_02They don't need a college fund, they'll get scholarships. That's right. That's right.
SPEAKER_00Well, no, that was good. That was eye-opening. I know golf trip planning is a is a big industry. It's obviously one of my favorite things to do with with buds. Uh man, I think I think some of those companies are making a little bit of money. Um, we have our final game today. It is a can you guess the top eight most iconic golf holes? So just the individual hole. What are the most iconic eight holes in golf? I think I'll start with Sawgrass 17. Yes, obviously, very topical.
SPEAKER_02It actually comes in at number three. Okay. Anything at Pebble Beach, but probably either the par three or the par five. The par five on the coast. Yes, yes. That's six.
SPEAKER_00You know, it actually doesn't make it on here. Pebble does make it on here, but they always, you're right. That iconic stretch, uh, the par five where you got to hit it over the water and and bring it back, such an iconic one. But everyone always is obsessed with number seven. I I disagree with that, but it's uh seven is number two on here.
SPEAKER_02Okay. But that's like the par three downhill, which I I get hitting hitting at the water. Yeah. Okay. Gonna move east to Augusta National, amen corner, par three over the water.
SPEAKER_0012. Is that 12? Yep. 12. 12. And then if you want to stay there, you can get one more, maybe.
SPEAKER_0218's fine, 17's fine. 16 is a really good one, but probably not maybe 13, actually.
SPEAKER_00Finish 13 off that amen corner with that bar five. That's that's what does it. Um, Augusta 13. All right. So you got the first four actually. So one, two, three, four. Uh, you just need the back four.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Um, I'm gonna go further east to what we were just talking about, St. Andrews. Probably 17 at St. Andrews. Yes. Where you have to hit over the clubhouse, right?
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes. They call it the uh the road hole because there's that road that runs alongside it. But yes, to hit a position A shot off the T, you're hitting over the clubhouse. And almost everyone does now. And so yeah, I'm not sure. You know, of the all the pros do it. I'm not sure, I'm not sure the average golfer that's playing the old course does it. That might be an expensive bill. They probably frown upon that. They probably definitely frown upon it. So old course number 17. Yes, you're you got one.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Then I would follow it up. The the vision I have in my mind is Tiger Woods crossing the bridge on 18 and not stopping, which is significant. So 18 at the old course.
SPEAKER_00Yes, absolutely. Such a great open finishing hole, just kind of emblematic of the entire place. And yeah, old course, number 18. That's uh number six on the list.
SPEAKER_02Great. So I got two more. What what part of the world am I looking for?
SPEAKER_00Something near and dear to your heart. It's in the state of Arizona.
SPEAKER_02Oh, probably TPC Scottsdale.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_00I'm actually shocked that this made the list.
SPEAKER_02It seems like I I'm I have a feeling it's 16. Yeah, it is 16. But you know, when you see pictures of 16 without the stands, yeah, it's just a normal golf hole.
SPEAKER_00100%. And like I think it belongs nowhere on this list, but you know, it is at number five. So had some great moments of the years. But yeah, no, no. Okay, you got one more to go. It's a little hard one. It actually has been mentioned on uh today's podcast. Is it one of the golf packages? Probably Royal Trune. Yes. The iconic, do you know the name of it? No, it's called the postage stamp. Yes. So postage stamp number eight at Royal Trune, uh, the small tiny green with like the five bunkers surrounding it. Yes, the postage stamp uh at number eight at Royal Trune. Well, that's that's the list of supposedly, but maybe disagreeable, the top eight most iconic goals, holes, and golf.
SPEAKER_02I mean, it is probably the top eight of goals of us to play there. Yes, and yes, so far I have zero. What about you?
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah, that's that's a definite hard zero. It's a very expensive list. So you're probably by our standards, you're paying at least 25,000 to somehow weasel your way onto Augusta. You're clearly paying a couple grand to get on the pebble, another couple grand to get on sawgrass, maybe a little less at Scottsdale. You're paying, sounds like a ton of money to play the old course and trune. So yeah, we we uh we got to start making some money to to to knock off this list.
SPEAKER_02Well, God willing. Let's see.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, absolutely. Um, all right. Well, that's gonna do it for us. Thank you for joining and see you next time.
