All right, can you imagine as an average Joe golfer showing up to Augusta on Masters Week with your clubs and expecting to play around?
SPEAKER_00Think I know what you're talking about.
SPEAKER_01All right, so back in 2007, a man showed up because his badge that he got said he had access to a practice round on Tuesday of Masters Week. So he thought that that meant he was allowed to play a practice round at Augusta. So he pulls up with his clubs, fully in a pushcart, fully decked out in golfing gear, ready to hit the links. And what's most interesting about this is the guy only had about six clubs in his bag. I I can almost get my mind around the whole story, except for the fact that he brought only six clubs in the bag.
SPEAKER_00Let him play. He wanted to play his style of golf of just going out on a probably Tuesday or Wednesday and just have a nice relaxing round. I say let him play.
SPEAKER_01You know, I'm almost inclined to believe, like in the right crazy circumstances, if it was meant wholeheartedly, like maybe some member does let him, you know, go through the club out, do something. I don't know. But obviously with Masters Week, he's not going to go out there and get to play. But yes, most of the commentary on this story is they should have let him play.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And I, if I had to write my own ending to the story, it would be that this guy later became the pacer for the Masters tournament. That would be my ideal scenario. That would just tie a bow on the whole thing.
SPEAKER_01That would be amazing. I I think the biggest problem is that no one ever interviewed this man. Like, how did this story break back in 2007? And no one was like, we gotta follow up with this guy to know the rest of the story or know how he thought. It just makes no sense to me. And you know, it's 20 years later. Who knows if this guy's still around? I I just really wish, who knows? Hey, maybe this, maybe this clip will blow up and we'll be able to find the guy and we'll interview him. That would that would be the fairy tale ending to this story.
SPEAKER_00A local municipal golf course says it's been overrun by what some are calling quote golfers. Has the game grown too much? Do we need more scratch golfers? I'm telling you, hack slow the game down. You can't grow golf if people are chunking it into the weeds all day. Scratch player?
SPEAKER_01Casey, I can smell the Azaleas blooming. We're two weeks away from the masters. Uh, how are you feeling?
SPEAKER_00I'm feeling great. We're gearing up towards the the best couple weeks of the year. We have these beautiful pink and red and white flowers that are blooming just up and down our street. So I think it's very fitting that we're being welcomed. Do you live on Magnolia Lane? Do you live in Butler County?
SPEAKER_01Unfortunately, unfortunately not. Before we get to the Masters, we do have to recap a few big things. I feel like Liv and PGA have just been going blow for blow on headlines this year, which is great. Great for the game of golf. I'm glad Liv is finally having good headlines. But this week, definitely PGA stole the show. A very emotional story, if people don't know about Gary Woodland, who recently hit well, if they didn't know and they watched the coverage, they for sure know now because it was everywhere. But Gary Woodland had brain surgery a few years back, didn't know if he'd make it back in a competitive sense, really. And then even once he did, he was suffering from serious PTSD and high anxiety and a lot of issues that come with brain surgery. And so, you know, he has had an incredible comeback, and the icing on the cake is that he pulled off the victory this week.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was just one of those incredible, heartwarming weeks on the PGA tour. Everybody loves Gary Woodland. They always have.
SPEAKER_01People were kind of trying to figure it out. And, you know, it was great to see some recognizable names float to the top at the end. A lot of people had a lot of good Sundays. Minwu Lee shot shot right up there, did did very well on Sunday, who's obviously the defending champ. Our guy, Yellow Miraju, call him the weekend warrior, man. He again storms up to get another top 10. Guys just on fire. There was a lot of great storylines going on. Um, Nikolai Horgard, who I've been riding this whole year, I feel like just so close, got second. But I think everyone was really pumped to uh see Gary win it, even so on the broadcast as Gary walked up 18, which I just feel like you don't see, but both playing partners, Minwu and and Nikolai, stopped and applauded with the crowd, which I just think that was so cool.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was such a sight to see and show shows just how much everybody respects him. And one thing to remember, you know, I I saw a lot of comments being like, wow, this guy is really making a run. I'm like, yeah, at the same time, this is one of the best players in the game. He's a US Open winner, multiple PGA tour winner, and it's been on the tour for a while. So it's like he's somebody you see and expect to play well. So, like, it it's an amazing story, and it's it's incredible that he pulled it off, but not surprised that somebody at his caliber could win a win again. And it's not going to be the last time we see it. So really exciting. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01We have some exciting news, which I didn't even know. You know, I we're paying attention to so many different things. I didn't even realize that over on the DP World Tour headline that I've loosely followed, especially when he comes and plays with his brother Alex over here. I mean, uh Matt over here in the US is uh Matt Fitzpatrick's brother. Alex broke through and won on the DP World Tour. That's fantastic.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was awesome. He had an insane final round. For him to, you know, I think we've all seen that episode of full swing where they're interviewing Alex, and everybody knows, like the elephant in the room is that he's been living in Matt's shadow for years. And so for him to win this tournament just a couple weeks after his brother wins on the PGA tour, like pretty awesome. And I know that Alex has been grinding to try and get on the PGA tour for a long time. So this is is gonna help him get there. So really, really impressive, and I'm I'm really happy for him. Like, I I don't know what it's like to be the younger brother of one of the best players in the world, but it can't be easy. So yeah, really stoked for him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's fantastic. I had to kind of look up what his world ranking shoots up to by the win, and it's significant. I mean, it really is significant. I think for the the way OGWR works is it's a rolling two years, so it it'll take some time, and as long as he progresses, it'll even be more but like projection-wise, it pushes him almost very close to that top 100, which is just fantastic. Yeah, I know it's quite significant a win on DP World Tour, what it does for you. So I'm really excited. I hope he keeps continuing to play better. And you know, who knows? It'd be really cool to see him on the PGA tour years from now, if that's something that he wants. And uh, yeah, it'd be amazing. All right, so I don't want to beat a dead horse. Every single podcaster and YouTube golfer in the world has commented on Tiger this week. I am not gonna do any tearing up like Dan, our friend Dan Rappaport did, which, you know, I get it, I get it, but that is that is a tough watch. What were your thoughts on Tiger this week?
SPEAKER_00You know, it's funny. I think I was sitting at lunch with some friends when I like got the message and I just like rolled my eyes and was like, come on, man, really. Um, I like I'm grateful nobody's hurt. That's kind of my big takeaway, is that nobody was seriously injured. But at the same time, I'm like, come on, man, you you're one of the biggest role models in sports. You have plenty of money. Just get a driver and have somebody take you around to the course and and get whatever you need. Like you, you deserve to have people working for you. You have a busy life. So I don't know. I was disappointed, frustrated, and like, yeah, uh selfishly sad that this might impact what his playing future looks like a little bit too. So yeah, that's all I got.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think, yeah, disappointed is probably the the best word to describe my instant reaction. I I thought of two things, you know, especially as this, you know, we haven't really had a big incident like this since I've had kids, and now having kids, I think the one thing is like, yeah, you said the role model thing, which is just like obviously growing up, looked up at to Tiger as a hero. It's hard to explain that to your son years later, like, oh yeah, this guy's amazing, this guy's the goat of golf, like, but he's got a horrible side, you know, story to him. And then the the other piece of this was I just honestly really felt bad for Charlie. Like Charlie is finally coming into his own, like he's got this huge opportunity at Florida State, and then this is just such a distraction and and really pulls the I mean, you know, if he does oppress her anytime in the next year, it's gonna just constantly be asking about his dad and what he thinks, and you know, roll it, just it's it's brutal. So I I feel for Charlie in the whole situation, honestly, maybe just as much as anyone. But um, yeah, tough thing. I you know, what I will say is he's bounced back before, and I think that is probably the problem with addiction, is you have these comebacks and relapses and and things like that, and just hopefully he makes another incredible comeback. Yeah, uh tough, tough to hear, and hopefully it gets a lot better going forward. Yeah, agreed. All right. Well, in the light of Liv not having a tournament this week, but we focus on what happened last week with the TGL. Your LAGC did take it down. The finals, uh, it was a two-series sweep, best out of three. And so we didn't need that third game. Ironically, Tiger Woods played up played in this matchup and then shortly after had his incident. But it's it's a phenomenal win. As a huge uh LAGC fan, uh, what was your reaction?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, I was stoked. I I love those guys. I think it's an awesome team. I can't help but think that folks buying their tickets did not get their money's worth, you know, which I don't want to be super critical, but you know, in our notes here we're saying, yeah, it ended around hole 10. And there could have been another match in the evening as well. So it's just like basically half of what a final tournament should have been. Um maybe a quarter. Yeah, you're right. And like just because LAGC dominated. So kind of rough to see for entertainment value. And then, like you said, Tiger played in it, but didn't really have his classic Tiger stuff, which you know, speculate all you want about his form and all that, but it wasn't even, you know, he had some good like pitch shots and things like that, but the putts, no, nothing to write home about. So I'm happy that they still that LAGC won. I think that's really cool to for California and Los Angeles. I think they a lot of investors are interested in this team and want to see it succeed and see the product grow. So yeah, I was super happy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01What I I didn't know, the cash prize is pretty significant. Uh, I know it's split four ways, but nine million dollars. I mean, this is by no means an act of uh of charity exhibition. This is this is for real, real money. This is you know equivalent to what you'd win on any non-signature event as the winner, and you get it four times with uh four different victors. And yeah, it it's significant. That's pretty awesome.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I mean it kind of makes up for it. It's not a long season, they don't play a ton of matches, but if you average out the math, it's like, okay, yeah, that makes sense. That's probably the correct payday for the guys that are winning that. So yeah, good of good for them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. Well, that was uh that was uh the week around uh the different tours that were active. But as always, we love to cover the side of YouTube golf, especially being content creators ourselves. So this is a part of the show where we rate and review the latest YouTube golf clips, and we got some great ones, and I'm gonna rattle off some some key quotes and then get into the summary. So this was by far my favorite one. And if you don't know, this is from Shannon Sharps, a very famous Lakers in five, but FP wins it by saying stream song, sing along, rip my bong, Bobby and five. And I when he said that, I about died on the floor. It was so funny. It was during the Bob Does supports, the one everyone wanted to see finally, it was Bob versus Joey, and maybe a surprising outcome. I mean, you know, Joey was not wrong in assuming that the whole world was rooting for Bobby on this one. There's not a single soul that wasn't rooting for Bob. Now, the problem and the controversy is they decided to do match play rather than stroke. And based on what I watched, I'm pretty sure Bob would have had him in stroke play. But in match play, he got Bob got up to a very early lead and then just started giving up holes one after the other. And Bob actually ended up losing three and two to Joey after the 16th. So it was very interesting, though. I mean, God, there were so many funny moments. The hilarity when Joey got stuck in the cart and was like trying to force it out of the ditch. I mean, there was just so many funny quotes in this. What what were your thoughts?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, this was kind of a classic Bob to sports episode. And just the camaraderie between all of them, I thought was just on point for this episode. Just everyone was having such a good time. And since the focus was on Bob and Joey for golf, it gave the other guys maybe a little bit of breathing room to really just make it fun and entertaining and light. So it was hilarious. I I do agree that Bob probably would have had it if they'd done stroke play. Bobby Putz was just not there that day, unfortunately, which we've seen him get hot with that putter, but that wasn't the case this time. And yeah, I mean, love Joey too, but I think everyone was still rooting for Bob and kind of a rough, rough scene for him that time.
SPEAKER_01I guarantee you they run it back because it was so well watched. I guarantee you they probably do it stroke play, but but we'll see. Yeah, I'm I'm excited. I hope they wait a little bit. I think, you know, just like good title belt fights in in the world of boxing, you gotta wait a little bit to to build the suspense. So hopefully they wait a little bit, but uh, we always like to give a rating and we're rating this a 90, uh, which puts it in the dialed category. So it was a phenomenal video. I just think maybe a little bit better if it was if it went the uh story script way of Bobby winning, or if it was uh stroke play. So on to the next one. This is one of my favorite quotes. I'm gonna start using this. I can't believe I've never heard this, but it goes hit that thing straight in the forehead. And that is what our good friend uh Trent at uh foreplay said when he sculled uh a wedge shot about 30 yards past the hole. And it is just so funny because when you skull, it does feel like you're hitting it straight in the forehead. And so, yeah, on his uh week uh weekly uh breaking 80, 85. So Trent started the break 90 like a long time ago, obviously did it. Uh, and a lot of people are giving him a lot of flack for not being able to break 85 long after, uh, which we know how hard it is to pick up five strokes in this game. But he's doing a break 85 and he played a lot of solid golf. What I will say, and is inspiring looking at Trent, who like, you know, just as a bad golfer myself, I'm like comparing, like, oh, I can do that. Like, if he's getting around the course, managing himself, I can do that. But no real major blow ups other than the par threes, like kept it really pretty low numbers, nothing too crazy, and you know, still unfortunately came up a little short. He shot shot like a crazy seven over on the par threes for the round, and and that's just not gonna do it for you. Um, but he ends up shooting in 92 and and doesn't quite get it done. You you didn't happen to watch this one this week, right?
SPEAKER_00I didn't catch this one, but I am thinking how often does he do these these breaking whatever videos? I think about monthly. Okay. You know, and maybe hot take here, I don't know. You should be able to get there. If I want to I want to know, well, I mean, you personally, yes. But like, no, no, I know, I know, I know.
SPEAKER_01I'm saying yes. Thank you, thank you for your confidence. I appreciate it. Of course. I actually have broke 85 for anyone who cares, but yes, yes, there you go.
SPEAKER_00Um if if let's say he's doing this monthly, that's you gotta figure out what your practice plan is. Like if if you're not shaving off if it's taking you six months to get five strokes, and I know it sounds like a lot, and it is, but that gap from 90 to 85 is a lot different than 85 to 80, in my opinion. So I maybe I need to watch it more to kind of get a sense of his game.
SPEAKER_01But he loves the stand, and I think that honestly is is a problem with us bad golfers, is you know, we're just happy it's not skulled 15 feet in front of us. So, you know, we're not taking dead aim at certain the right misses. Let's put it that way, the right misses. And so he found himself just a handful of bunkers uh throughout the course. And it it really is it's a hard to recover, especially if you find those fairway bunkers. So um, yeah, uh, I think that's just part of part of being a you know average golfer. Um, for this video, we're giving an 81. It wasn't that entertaining, but uh that puts it into the on-the-green category for the rating system. So 81, pretty good video. All right. This next one, fantastic video. Heated discussion led to this quote: it's like the six iron and eight iron had a perfect baby. And that was said by by none other than Grant Horvat on the Brian Bros channel.
SPEAKER_00Is he talking about a seven iron?
SPEAKER_01Best believe it. He's talking about a seven iron. It was at the major cut, which is a great series. I don't know if you've ever seen the series, fantastic series, where they go to these major venues and they replay basically what was the cut line back in, you know, for this example, the 2021 US Open at Tory. It was plus four, was the cut line, and they over 36 holes playing it, try to make it to plus four. It doesn't look good for the boys, they are all right on that cut line. Actually, Grant is winning at this point, which they're they're halfway through, but Grant's winning, and he's plus two, the other, I think, are plus four through 18. So I think we're getting the second part later this week. Um, it was a great, it was a great video and and a lot of good golf content and still entertaining those those three are characters. But yes, this this whole thing, which I'm curious your thoughts, they were arguing what is the you know, general consensus on a player's favorite club in their bag.
SPEAKER_00What what do you mean? Like, what's the consent?
SPEAKER_01Like, why is it their favorite? Or like what do you think the general population would say is their favorite club in the bag?
SPEAKER_00I would I would say generally people say a seven iron because I do think so. Here's why. But this is for a very specific group of people. Like somebody like me, the majority of the practice I was doing when I was taking lessons was just with irons and seven irons. And he's like, you know, while you're still learning, you shouldn't have a very different swing than you do for your nine iron to your four iron. And so you just split the difference and you practice with your seven. That said, that's not my favorite club. My favorite is pitching wedge, maybe my nine iron, but that's simply because I feel like I use them so much and I can use them for a lot of different things. But I know, I know everybody has their favorites. A lot of people love the driver, but yeah, you don't use the driver very much when you think about it.
SPEAKER_01I get what Grant is saying. Like, seven is my favorite iron, but like if you ask people, like, no, I I think it's more likely when you said either a wedge, even driver, even putter. I I think very small subsections say seven, but I I get what they're saying. It's my favorite iron to hit, probably by far. Uh it's you know, got enough power and to get it a good distance, but has a decent amount of control, the control that I lose when I drop down to a five. So yeah, I I get it. But yeah, it was a fantastic video. I can't wait to watch the second part. Such a good series, and I love it. Staying on the topic of those three, we got some big, big news in the space this week, and we cannot not talk about it. YGT, your golf tour, a YouTube golfer league, started by those three and backed by none other than Steve Wynn of the Wynn Hotel Enterprise starting a league, and it's based on highly competitive YouTube golf. I think um Wes was recorded saying it's three, it's actually been three years in the making from the moment they initially conceptualized it and started talking. It's a full tour. I mean, it has qualifiers, it has Big stakes. Yeah, this is this well thought out and obviously well backed tour. Um, and it's going to be competition driven. But their hope is that competition first, but not at the expense of what YouTube what makes YouTube golf YouTube golf, which I think is the right flavor. If they're if they're wanting to start a competitive leave, it does need to be competitive golf first. It can't be, you know, some of the content creators that aren't sticks. This needs to be competitive, but allow inside access to the commentary, the jokes, I mean, all the stuff that we love about YouTube golf. So I'm pretty excited about what what are your thoughts?
SPEAKER_00I mean, personally, my first thought is how do I get involved with this? Like I that was my first thought is I need to step it up and we need to grow our channel so that I can get into this tournament, into this tour. So what what do I have to do?
SPEAKER_01Nice. No, that's that's exciting. And and the I think when they interviewed uh Wesley and George, they were saying the amount of DMs that they got instantly from any, you know, any and all creators everywhere was out outrageous. And so yeah, you're not the only one. It's it's it's pretty amazing. I would have to assume that they are gonna limit it to very, very, very popular channels to bring in the eyes that they wanted to want to do. Uh but like I mean, it's it's aspirational. Yeah, exactly. It's aspirational. And I think people, just like they dream of playing in the PGA, why not dream of playing on the YGT?
SPEAKER_00Yep, exactly. I mean, yeah, that's I'm motivated. Like I now want to be practicing. So if the the opportunity arises, I'm ready to go.
SPEAKER_01There you go. Well, it sounds like it's for years to come. It's not a one-year thing, it's not a two-year thing. This they're really trying to build this out, and and luckily I do believe that YouTube golf has the momentum to carry it forward. So it should be good. Really excited time to be in this space. And I, you know, I'm I'm loving what we're doing and and what we're creating, and I'm loving that this whole industry as a whole is being really lifted up by stuff like this. As we step back into a PGA competitive golf, we got the Valero Texas Open, uh, the forgotten stepchild of the PGA tournaments by far. I mean, everyone is kind of already focused on on masters. However, this has always played a crucial role in which it's the last opportunity for someone to sneak into the masters. You had Akshay do it uh a couple years ago, which ultimately led to the amazing moment of the first drive chip and putt person to make it into the masters with Akshay. Um, yeah, it it's it's a forgotten tournament, no doubt about it, but very competitive. A lot of great golfers in here because they want to compete, tune up right before the masters. And, you know, the course provides a nice challenge. So yeah, what what are your thoughts this week?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, everything you just said, this is a huge tournament for folks that are trying to get into the masters for, you know, their third time, fourth time, and some just trying to get there for the first time. So this is always a fun one. And I try to watch the whole thing to like get me in the zone of watching golf all weekend for the masters. So yeah, it's fun. A lot of people still love this tournament, but it is kind of overshadowed because everyone else is thinking about the masters. But that said, I have some picks of who I think are going to perform very well. Uh, my first one is Sepp Straca. He's been pretty consistent the the past few tournaments. He hasn't played here in a few years, though, is my only concern. You know me, I like to pick guys that who are playing very well, and he has been. And so I feel like he's just due for a win. He's kind of had some bad breaks in the past other tournaments, but overall, doing a great job. This one's kind of a risk, but I'm picking Colin Moragawa. He's back this week after his his uh you know withdrawn. Was it a couple weeks ago now? He needs to get in another tournament before the Masters. So I think he's going to treat this, have to treat this tournament as if he's giving it his all to see if he can compete the following week. So, but I mean his numbers look good still for this course specifically. Greens and regulation, he would he would probably dominate. So we'll see about that. And then my last one, kind of a sleeper. Uh, and I don't really know much about this kid, but uh, where'd his name go? Johnny Kiefer. He's playing some G some incredible golf. And I think I looked him up. He's like 24, 25. He's a kid, but he's been playing some great golf and just playing better each week, which I like to see as well. And so, hey, if he can pull this off and get in the masters next week, props to him. So I'm I'm gonna be watching him.
SPEAKER_01No, that's that's a good call. He I've been kind of slowly tracking him throughout the season, and yeah, he's been playing some great golf. Um, it doesn't seem like the moment is too big for him. He he's coming off a nice finish last week. Uh, he had a couple missed cuts right before that, but ultimately playing very good. And you you've talked about this before about picking golfers that you know are on a little bit of a hot streak or at least warming up. And yeah, it's I think it's it's great, and it's a good sign of for things to come for Kiefer. Um, all right, so that leaves me to my picks. And I went a couple obvious ones, especially for the Valero Texas Open over the years. Can't believe it. I never love when I do it, it doesn't feel great, but I'm taking Jordan Speith. Um, a lot has been talked about his game this year, how it's looking like it's coming around and making steps forward, but returning to a place that he feels very comfortable at, looking for, like you said, similar to Mark How a nice tune-up and making sure he's all systems go for next week. I think he has a chance to do really well. I've been talking about Michael Thorbjornsson a ton this season. I'm going the other Thor, baby Thor. I'm going, I'm going Thorbjorn Olison. And he played some really great golf last week, and uh, I'm writing that. And so he's I believe he's had a pretty good finish here in the in the past, maybe one good finish, but Thorbjorn Olleson is one of my picks. And then I am going, I'm gonna nickname this guy. And I think this guy's been looking for a nickname for all of space, so I'm declaring it right here. This is Canon. His name is AD DC on a on a play on ACDC, which yeah, that is really good, if I do say so myself. But Adrian Dumont Deschart, um, he has been climbing up the leaderboard this whole season, playing some great golf. Um, and I'm excited to see what he can do this week. And maybe he sneaks into the masters. Everyone loves a story, so um, he's obviously not in the the masters as of right now, but if he wins this week, he'll be there. And I think that'd be a fantastic story for AD DC.
SPEAKER_00So I love that, and we gotta tag him in the comments to see if he likes it.
SPEAKER_01I think he's gonna like it. Um, so that brings us to the Valero, Texas Open. I'm excited. I'm excited for that last putt to drop on Sunday and friend full focus on the masters, but it should be a good weekend of golf, so I'm looking forward to it. We have a state of emergency, and that state of emergency is happening in the golf apparel world. We have grown too accustomed to seeing what I will call his half-ass, albeit somewhat lazy, design on limited golf apparel around master season. And this came into full frame focus this week when I had seen the giant that is Callaway put out their Augusta line with literal pimento cheese sandwiches miniaturized as a print on a golf shirt. And I wondered to myself, who the hell is wearing that? Not me. Not me. And I know Callaway is not in the business to lose money, so it begs the question: who is wearing these things? And it's not just them. To be fair to Callaway, it's not just them. Everyone in their mother is releasing some limited Masters Week apparel, and it is just coded in, you know, Augusta themed iconic imagery, all micro micronized into a print. And I just feel like it's a little lazy. Like, use the colors of Augusta, use the Azalea pinks, do all that stuff, but just don't half-ass it like this. What are your thoughts?
SPEAKER_00I totally agree. And I think we talked about this a few weeks ago about like what's the most exclusive merch. And off the top of your head, you would think anything masters or Augusta related. But then when you really dig into think about it, everybody has their own thing that they do. So there's just an abundance surplus of this master stuff. And it looks like someone kind of just threw this shirt together on Canva and printed it on a shirt. So not the best. And yeah, I think it is too much, but maybe it means that the ones who do it well really stand out, like the Taylor May bags we were talking about a couple years ago. Awesome. But yeah, it's it's a problem. It is a problem.
SPEAKER_01Hopefully, it gets fixed over time. I mean, they wouldn't be releasing it if people weren't buying it. So do do a service to everyone. If if you're thinking about clicking buy on that, just pause for just a quick second. So that's the state of uh the Pro Shop job for this week. Uh, we got some fun games this week. We got a lot of different game styles. Why don't you walk us through the first game?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so I I played golf with somebody's over the weekend, and we were talking about like, oh, I wish that just every round I could do this, or if I only had one good shot, I wish it was this good shot. And so I thought I would do kind of like, would you rather uh would you give up this for this in terms of golf shots? So I'm gonna give them to you and you're gonna tell me which one you choose. Sound good? Sounds great. Okay. So the first one, off the tee, you can hit every drive, 350 yards dead center, but you are never allowed to use a golf cart again.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I would I would take that. Um I would 100% take that. There for me right now, especially with my game, my biggest fear is off the T. And I I feel like if I can hit a good one off the T, the confidence is there and everything kind of goes uh goes with it. Uh now, question with clarifying on this, I can choose whether to do it at 350 or not, right? It doesn't have to always be at 350 because on those correct. Okay, okay, perfect.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so yeah. But I'm gonna breeze past you in my golf cart with the beers that we bought pre-round and you can't jump in. We talked about this last week.
SPEAKER_01Walking the game or walking the course is is a beautiful part of the game. And so, yes, I am gonna be striping it. And while you are going to get your ball at, you know, 280 in the rough, I'll be walking right past you to my 350-yard drive dead center. So I'm taking it.
SPEAKER_00Okay, noted. All right, next one. You hit every green in regulation, okay? And to to sweeten the deal, you are on and two in par fives. But you can never use a putter. You have to use a sand wedge to putt.
SPEAKER_01No, that's crazy. No, I can't no.
SPEAKER_00I just putting for birdie or eagle every hole.
SPEAKER_01No, no. I think I think another beautiful part of the game is the struggle to get there. And if it's just an automatic gimme to agree in regulation, but I look like an idiot putting with a sand wedge or a driver, I'm it's not worth it. I'm saying no.
SPEAKER_00I think that's a good call. Also, putting with a wedge would just be so annoying after a while.
SPEAKER_01I'd do it with a driver of three wood. There's no chance I'd do it with a wedge. Okay, good to know. Unless I could hit it in the forehead like Trent. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_00All right, next one. I like this one. You gain the ball-striking ability of prime tiger woods, but every time you step on a T box, a gallery of 50 people appears and heckles you relentlessly until the ball is in the hole.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, give me the give me the smoke. I want all the smoke. Give me prime tiger. I want all the smoke. Yes, give it to me. I would give it to him. Okay, so you want to know what that's like. If I got tiger, this is like space jam material. If I got tiger woods flowing through my veins, I am 100% not driving myself to the golf course, but I will be striping it off that tee. Great callback. Very nice.
SPEAKER_00Okay. All right, next one. We'll see. You get to play Cypress Point, but you have to play with old hickory clubs. I think that's I think that's beautiful.
SPEAKER_01Really? I think give me that persimmon wood. Give me, give me all that. I think it would be a day of nostalgia. And to do it at Cypress Point, I know it's not the oldest club in the US, but it it it does have an old-timey feel to it and and just kind of iconic. I think that would be part of the, you know, I think that'd be amazing. I think you just created a golf YouTube channel right there. You just go play iconic courses with old clubs.
SPEAKER_00That's your niche. I was I was just thinking that right after I said it. I think we have our next video. That sounds great. Yeah. Okay. All right. You you don't feel like you would be missing out on seeing what you're potentially.
SPEAKER_01I've never played in Cyprus, and I know that and I get that. But if you're giving me the opportunity, I'm gonna do it any way I can. Fair enough.
SPEAKER_00Okay. This one's tough. You are guaranteed a hole in one every single year for the rest of your life, but it only happens when you're playing alone.
SPEAKER_01No, that's that's crazy. What do I care? What do I care? Especially if I know it's it's gonna happen. It's like the only good part of it is is truly the unknown of it, and then to celebrate with other people. And then please, are you telling me I'm gonna walk into that bar and ha and feel guilty if I'm not paying for everyone's drink who didn't see my hole in one? No, no chance.
SPEAKER_00Keep your home water. Yeah. I'm I'm thinking people would just hate me if every year I'm like, I've got another hole in one and I was alone again.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly. Imagine if Shane Lowry was just like a casual golfer and he's just like, no, I swear I have 34 hole ines. I swear.
SPEAKER_00That would be so funny. Oh man. Okay. This one, you hit the fairway every time off the T, but you have to shout Baba Buoe at the top of your lungs every time.
SPEAKER_01This is this is the Sophie's choice of the group. It's one of my least favorite call-outs, when it I know, I know. You were playing it out, weren't you? You know what? I will do it if I can select it. Like if I don't want to hit the fair way, or if I don't want to be guaranteed a fair way, and I don't have to yell Baba buoy, yeah, I'll take the power. But if I have to yell Baba buoy every single time.
SPEAKER_00Okay, and yeah, you're right. You have to yell it. You can't just baba buoy. You you gotta really the whole three holes down needs to hear you. That's crazy. That's crazy behavior. Okay, that's good. Okay, you two put every hole, but you can't use anything more than a seven iron at any time. No, no, really, okay. So same field as like putting with the wedge.
SPEAKER_01Too limiting, too limiting of the enjoyment of the sport.
SPEAKER_00Okay. I would like to see how that goes though. It'd be an interesting round to only play with a seven iron and then just accept the two-put.
SPEAKER_01I mean, really sadly, there have been times where I'm like, I just really and don't laugh too hard, but I'm like, I really would love to like break a hundred today. And I and I go out there for like the first four holes, and I'm like, I'm going iron off the tee every single time, and it never works out. As much as you tell yourself, like, or at least I tell myself, like, oh, I'd be better or safer with iron. It's really not the play. Uh so no.
SPEAKER_00Fair enough. Okay. Last one. You are guaranteed to shoot your best round, whatever that is during this, okay? But you can't turn off the cart reverse noise at any time during the round.
SPEAKER_01No. These ones where you're sacrificing the enjoyment and the peace and tranquility for others. It's it's like it better be really special. No.
SPEAKER_00You're breaking your record.
SPEAKER_01They were able to make that noise in golf court something that is just unbearable. It's worse than any beep or any fire alarm beep. Like, it's it's so bad. I don't know why they feel like the need to make it that bad. But um, yeah, no, I'm not doing it. I'm not taking it.
SPEAKER_00I'm a man of the baby. Okay. All right. If I had to give your, you know, your answers a name or I guess an an idea, it's enjoyment. Enjoy you want to enjoy the game still. And if that means you don't play your best, you're good with that.
SPEAKER_01That's right. That's exactly it. Sums me up perfectly. Very nice. All right. For this second one, we got an interesting one. I'd say you don't get that many. So, Casey, can you name all the things that a masters champion receives from Augusta National for winning? Not the PGA, not everything else that comes with it, but specifically from Augusta National.
SPEAKER_00Okay, okay. First one is green jacket.
SPEAKER_01Yes, of course. They get the green jacket, not only you know, for the year and they get to take it away from property, but they also get a uh a member's jacket hung up in the locker room forever. Okay, makes sense. The trophy, the clubhouse trophy. You know, I didn't know that they actually get a replica to take home. They get a replica of the trophy to take home. Obviously, the one that it's engraved with their name stays at the clubhouse, but they do get to take home a trophy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Do they do the same with the claret jug? I can't remember. I feel like they bring that back.
SPEAKER_01I think you get to keep the claret jug, the real one, for a year. Yeah. But you don't, I don't maybe they make you a replica, but you actually get to take the claret jug with you. Right. That's pretty cool.
SPEAKER_00Okay. You get to pick the meal at the next year's champion's dinner.
SPEAKER_01Of course. Uh, you get the champion, the honor to host the champion's dinner, and then you also get to attend the champion's dinner for the rest of your life.
SPEAKER_00Makes sense. And kind of in that same area, I'm thinking of Tony Finow. I think you get like your own parking spot.
SPEAKER_01You do, you do get a uh there, it's not your own spot, but there is a champion's lot to park in. Okay. So you'll famously Tony Finow tried to park in the wrong parking lot. Yeah. Yes, you get a parking lot, not necessarily a spot.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Similar path. You get a spot in the champion's locker room, I think.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yes. You get a nameplayer. Yes, you get your own locker. You do actually have to share lockers. So you're sharing one with multiple uh past champions, which is kind of cool. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That that's how I was just thinking, like, I think Rory is sharing with Ben Hogan. Like, how crazy is that? That's that's insane. That's incredible.
SPEAKER_01So, yes, you do get uh a spot in the champion soccer room. Okay. You're doing great. You're doing way, way better than I gave you credit for.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Thanks. Lifetime invitation to the masters.
SPEAKER_01Yes, lifetime. You can play it whenever you want, as long as you want for the masters.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Uh, you said what you get from Augusta. Yes. I actually don't know if Augusta gives you the prize money or if that comes from the PGA tour. I'm assuming it comes from the PGA tour. I believe it comes from the PGA tour. Makes sense. Um, how many more do I have? You have three. Okay. Four. Four. You have four left. Four. Shoot. I think I'm kind of running out of you don't you don't get a bib, you don't get a certain number that resets every year. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so you you do actually get bib number one. We covered this last week. So you get bib number one. So that's you get that only the next year. You actually get two physical items that are kind of unique. You get a gold medal that says Augusta National Champion or uh Masters Champion. Uh, and then you get this crazy weird gold locket. And I believe there is either a picture that is already set inside with gosh, it's it's it might be it might be Ben Hogan of a picture. I'm not kidding. You get a locket, so that's one of the other physical gifts you get, but then you get access to the champions only range, which I I mean that's crazy that that even exists. So champions only range, you get access to that. And your last one, which I find very special, is you get uh a pre-masters Sunday round that you get to pick the time slot. Even Masters winners usually have to go out or or be signed up to play with a member to go out. Like there's this whole famous thing of Gary Player and and all this stuff. Um, but on the Sunday before the Masters, as the past champion, you are able to pick a time slot of your choosing and take anyone you want to play on your own. And so very famously, Scotty Scheffler took his mom last year to play on that Sunday round. So we will have the honors to take someone of his choosing on that Sunday round. I'm waiting for my invite. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, you and Shane Lowry are waiting for that invite.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_01No, I I'm curious who who he takes, it'll be interesting.
SPEAKER_00Um But from what I remember, you mentioned the Gary Player thing. Like you're not a member, you don't get to just go out there and play whenever you want, right?
SPEAKER_01So you get an honorary membership, which doesn't hold a lot of weight, honestly. P past that that year, it doesn't really hold a lot of weight. You you still have to can't just walk onto the property and say, I'm playing today, even if you're a master's champion. And so it's kind of crazy. It really is crazy, but yeah. Wow, all right. I did okay. You did great, you did fantastic. Because you did so fantastic, we're gonna stay on the line of master's thinking. We're it's master's spirit. And one of the men, one of the things we mentioned was the champions' dinner, and very famously as the champion, you get to set the menu. And you know, people have taken extreme liberties with this in the past, whether it's you know, a Scottish winner choosing to have Haggis on the menu and no one wants to eat it, or Hideki Matsuyama putting out. One of the most well-reviewed master's dinners ever to be held, um, and rated by past champions with this beautiful spread of the best cuts of sashimi and straight from Japan fish. So, yeah, I wanted to ask you what would be your master's dinner? And there's a couple bits of criteria here. You need four appetizers, you need two mains, you need one dessert and one drink.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So am I just gonna run through each of them? Give it to me. Okay. Honestly, I think I got a lot of inspiration from my wedding. And, you know, you were there, so you would know that some of these come from that. We had, I don't remember exactly what they were, but they were like shrimp hush puppies. And they were the appetizers, they were fried, and it was just super delicious, but just you know, something a little bit hearty. Hush puppies has made it on the list.
SPEAKER_01Really? Bubba famously put it on his menu some years back.
SPEAKER_00Well, that that was a controversial uh menu from Bubba Watson, if I remember. Yes. Okay, so this one would be better, trust me. Uh, I'm a huge fan of like a brochetta and crostini, like with just some tomatoes, olive oil, stuff like that. Okay, the other one would be a bacon wrapped date with goat cheese. Some like really high quality goat cheese.
SPEAKER_01No. You're joking. What's wrong with that? That's literally what Rory's doing this year. Really? Identically. Maybe I had it in my mind a little bit. My mom's famous dish that she makes is bacon. Wow.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Well, I you know, you know what's funny? I did see the menu, so maybe I was already thinking of it, but like we made those here not too long ago. And we loved it. So yeah, I'll throw. I was really worried you were gonna say that's another Bubba Watson one. And I was like, oh shoot, I'm going down this path.
SPEAKER_01You and Rosie McElroy must make must be just linked like this.
SPEAKER_00Hey, I'm I'm available that Sunday. If he wants to bring me along, I will happily have some dates too. Nice. Uh but though, you know, all the hardy ones and round it out with uh like a watermelon, mint, and basil mix, just like very yeah, kind of just light and refreshing. So that would be that one.
SPEAKER_01As the elite, say, palate cleanser.
SPEAKER_00Um, okay, so the mains, I gotta get a steak in there. And on vacation, my family, we always do these peppercorn parsley butter steak fillets. Um, so I would have that for just like savory, delicious, hearty, all that. And then the other, which this is like my favorite thing in the whole world, is a spicy buttermilk fried chicken sandwich, just nice brioche bun, which I'm sure get a local Atlanta place to do it or the chef, and we're you're good. Yes. So those are my mains. Dessert, I went back and forth a lot on these, but I'm kind of going like the light refreshing because remember, I'm playing in Augusta tomorrow. So I can't have anything like crazy heavy. So I'm just thinking like a nice torched creme brulee, something like that. Yeah. And then top it all off with a smoky old-fashioned, maybe with a little bit of peach in there.
SPEAKER_01Casey, I mean, bravo. Not only am I very impressed with your menu, but I am absolutely starving now. My mouth is actually salivating. It's crazy, it's crazy. You nailed it. Sounds great. You put together a very like just good menu. Thank you. Yeah, I mean, I want to hear yours. Yeah, we'll have to do it on on next week's podcast.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I thought you had one ready to go. No, no, no.
SPEAKER_01We'll uh I just wanted to hear I just wanted to hear about yours. So that that is phenomenal. And you're right, there have been some blowups. We should share the that's that's what we'll do next week. Yes. The worst, the five worst master's meals. 100%. That's what we're doing next week. 100%. Definitely. All right, take us home with this last one.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so I I think I mentioned I played golf uh over the weekend with some friends who I haven't seen in a while, and uh and my wife, and you know, I was just playing. I'm like, this is the best. We teed off at like three o'clock in the afternoon. It was light, it was breezy, and I'm like, what is the perfect day of golf? You know, like what does that actually involve? I'm gonna let you build your perfect day. So you're gonna, I'm gonna ask you a couple things of uh I'm gonna start out with the course and I'll go and ask more questions. How's that sound? We're gonna go back and forth, yeah. Let's go back and forth because I have I have mine in here as well.
SPEAKER_01So my one qualification, no stolen valor. You have to pick a course that you've played.
SPEAKER_00Okay, fair. Yes, okay. Um I gotta change my answer real quick, but I got it.
SPEAKER_01I told you I'm gonna throw you a little for a loop. Um, okay, so I will start. The course I would pick, I it doesn't really have to be this course. I just love where you can like stay on property. There's a bunch of different courses to play. And so I got the opportunity to play Purcell Farms, which is out in Alabama. And it's a property where you're you're driving for 10 minutes once you're in the property to get to the clubhouse. And so it's it's phenomenal. It's super, it's vast, it's got some challenging horses, holes, huge practice facility, just a mecca of a good weekend of golf. And so I'm going Per Cell Farms.
SPEAKER_00That's great. Since I had to backtrack a little bit, I am I'm going very chill, nostalgia, and where I feel most comfortable. Also, it's really it's harder to get tea times here nowadays, but Griffith Park Wilson, one of my favorite LA courses. Yes. Great course, great vibes. That's where I'm going. Cool. So the next one is time of day. What time of day are you playing this course?
SPEAKER_01No, it's so controversial. I I think most people would say sunset round, you know, just golden hour, just everything about that. I am a person who actually likes the feeling of waking up early in the morning to go to play around, the dew on the grass. Like there's something that I connect with that just as much as like a sunset during golf. So I'm gonna go at like, yeah, like 8:30 a.m.
SPEAKER_00Okay. See, yeah, I'm I'm a little different. I like like an 11 a.m. If I'm playing a four to five hour round sometimes to finish around three or four, like the sun isn't too in your face yet, but get a nice easy morning and fit some beers in there along the way. So I'm taking like a mid-morning till early afternoon. Okay, what clubs are you playing? You just got a sponsorship and they're giving you a brand new full set of clubs, you know.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna be playing so basic, but I'm picking the uh I'm going the limited edition Mizuno Pro Irons, the Azaleas. Yeah. Speaking of limited release master drops, going those most might be the most beautiful set of clubs ever made out of the factory. So I'm going those and then I'm playing, yeah. I'm gonna try out that LA golf driver. That's that's that's my yes. I hear some great things. I'm going that drive the that driver. So Okay.
SPEAKER_00Team Bryce. Very nice. Yeah. I like it. Um, I think you know what I'm gonna say, but I'm going a brand new fresh set of Wilson blades.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00And but I might throw uh honestly, I I miss it. My sim two driver. Yeah, that's my favorite driver. So I'm going back to my sim two. Yeah, very simple. That's what I'm doing.
SPEAKER_01I like that.
SPEAKER_00Okay, and who who are you playing with? What's your group? Well, it's a foursome. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I'd have to say, yeah, my buds from college. It's a perfect foursome. We're all really bad at golf except one guy. And it kind of makes that for some reason that dynamic is super fun because we can just like really raz that one guy if he hits a horrible shot, even though we've hit 50 that are worse than that. And uh yeah, it's a it's a good wolf, it's a good wolf group to play. So I'm going three buds from college.
SPEAKER_00I like it. I'm probably taking a couple of my high school buddies who I played a lot of golf with, and then my dad, who also knows them very well. And, you know, I've been trying to get him back into golf to practice and do the whole thing because he was really good at one point. So I'm trying to get him back into it. So I if I can build this perfect day, I think he'd be more into it. Nice. So my dad and some buds.
SPEAKER_01It sounds like a pretty amazing day to miss out on. So I don't think he'd pass it up.
SPEAKER_00I know. All right, and lastly, food and drinks. What are you getting to eat on the course and what drinks are you bringing with you?
SPEAKER_01So there's two food items I want. I want to start my round. I'm going since watching Bob does sports, there's very few things that I don't appreciate more than uh a chicken Caesar wrap. So starting off the round with early in the front nine of chicken Caesar wrap, and then on the turn to hot dog drinks. I used to be a bloody merry guy, not so much anymore. I'm going those Juan Dailies and I'm racking them up. Nice.
SPEAKER_00I was just thinking about those. They're so good. All right, pretty good. You know, now that I'm playing at Griffith Park, I feel like I need to get like an LA food. So if somebody could somehow get me like a Philippe sandwich, like halfway through the round, that would be so awesome.
SPEAKER_01For that and maybe like for not local. Felipe's is a LA staple, which they did you call Felipe's? I can definitely call it Felipe's. Wow, that's that's controversial too. That's definitely what I call it. Um, they are famous for what they say is creating the French dip, and it is finite tap. You can get in all different kinds of meats, have every single type of meat that you could possibly want to put into a French dip, and the Azou is amazing. You can't beat it. Cannot beat it.
SPEAKER_00Yep, yep. And unfortunately, their competitor Coles, who also claims to have invented this French dip, is closing this week. So R.I.P. to that. But my drinks would probably be Golden Road Brewery, which is right down the road. So get some fresh draft beers, and yeah, I think that's it.
SPEAKER_01Anything else you would Golden Road off the first tee? Probably the best decision ever.
SPEAKER_00Definitely.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00All right. Anything else you would add on to your perfect day?
SPEAKER_01No, these are two very different but phenomenal days. I can't imagine you could pick between the two. Phenomenal days. Very nice. Love it. These days come too far and few between. That's that's the truth of it.
SPEAKER_00I know.
SPEAKER_01Tell me about it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01All right. Well, I'm sufficiently hungry and itching for golf, but that's gonna do it for us this time. Thank you for joining and see you next time.
