What The Smut Are You Talking About
What The Smut Are You Talking About Podcast is a romance book podcast where two smut-loving co-hosts bring their honest, unfiltered, and completely chaotic lives to the internet. We chat all things romance books, with a side of motherhood, pop culture, and Cortney's very unhealthy obsession with Diet Coke.
Each week is a surprise (even to us), because anything goes. Expect romance book deep dives, general book talk, fun interviews with people we have no business interviewing, and whatever else we spiral into along the way.
This podcast is for romance readers 18+ who make reading their personality, thrive in chaos, and have an unhealthy obsession with fictional men who set unrealistic standards. If that's you, then welcome home.

In this special anniversary episode of What the Smut Are You Talking About, Cortney celebrates one year of the podcast by sitting down with one of her dream guests, bestselling romance author Kandi Steiner.
Known for writing addictive sports romance, fake dating love stories, and emotionally charged contemporary romance, Kandi shares the story behind how she became an indie author after graduating college and rediscovering her love for reading. From standing in line for the final The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 premiere to publishing her first romance novel, Kandi talks about the unexpected journey that led to her dream career.
Throughout the episode, we dive into some of her most beloved series, including the fan-favorite Kings of the Ice hockey romance series and the college football romance world of Red Zone Rivals. Kandi also shares her love for writing tropes like fake dating, second chance romance, slow burn relationships, and forbidden love stories.
The conversation also touches on her upcoming release Save Your Breath, a swoony NHL bad boy meets pop star romance with fake engagement and childhood history that will have romance readers hooked.
Plus, things get chaotic in the best way when Kandi plays a “Smash or Pass” game ranking her own book boyfriends, and let’s just say… choosing between fictional hockey players and football stars is harder than it sounds.
If you love sports romance books, hockey romance, fake dating tropes, slow burn love stories, and behind-the-scenes author interviews, this episode is packed with laughs, author insights, and plenty of book boyfriend chaos.

What's up, Book Nerds? Welcome to What the Smut Are You Talking About podcast. This is your weekly podcast where pretty much anything goes. Each week I have a new or returning co-host, so be sure to stay tuned to see who I am chatting with this week.
00:28
Welcome to season 3 of What the Smut Are You Talking About podcast. My name is Courtney and as of when this episode drops, it will be my one year anniversary to the day from when I first released my first four episodes of season 1. I just want to say a huge, huge thank you.
00:44
to everyone for their support. You guys are so amazing. And, you know, just keep an eye out over on my Instagram because I'm sure I'll be doing some sort of birthday giveaway in the month of March. You know, when I first started this podcast, it was the silly little idea I had. You know, I have ADHD, self-diagnosed. And I figured I would give up after a few months because really who would want to listen to me up about books anyways?
01:11
But you guys have continued to show up and show out and here I am a year later with no plans of ever stopping and this is all thanks to you. And because of this, I'm definitely going to be spooling you guys this season. I have some amazing guests lined up and I can't wait to share them all with you. It's crazy. When I first started this journey, I made this Google sheet, you know, to help keep me organized. And on one of the tabs, it has a spot for, you know, dream guests.
01:39
And so over a year ago, put three names on this list thinking there was no way in hell that I was going to ever convince one of them to come on. Well, I kind of, you know, forgot about this list and, um, which is funny because I just found it. I think it was like last week I found this list of these three names. Well, uh, jokes on me because I did get one and I'm just still in such disbelief. So, you know, I'll stop rambling here and introduce you to the wonderful.
02:09
Kandi Steiner. Hi, Kandi. Thanks for coming on. Hi, thanks for having me. Yes, thank you so much for agreeing. I was shocked when I got the email back saying, yeah, sure, I'll do it. I love to chat on podcasts, so you've got yourself into trouble now. I'm just going to like chat your ear off the whole time. Oh, I love it. I bring it.
02:31
So how's work been back from maternity leave? Crazy. It's so interesting. I mean, I'm kind of in the groove now because I came back at the beginning of November and now it's, you know, middle of January when we're recording this. So I am kind of in the flow of things, but uh it's been so weird trying to figure out what my new normal is because I obviously cannot have the schedule that I had before. oh all good things, though. mean, writing's been going great and I still love being in my office and just, you know, working.
03:01
on my dream career literally all day. So it's great, but it's just different as far as like how the timeline of things works. Also, when I wasn't sleeping, that was tough, but I'm sleeping better now. So I do not miss those days when we had our second. I was like, why did I do this again? I was like, I forgot how awful the newborn stage can be when you're not sleeping. It happens so fast because I remember when she was like a month or two months old and
03:30
those nights were so long and I would tell my husband like I don't want to do this again. I love her so much, but I can't lose sleep like this. It's awful. And then I'm not even kidding. By the time she was like three and a half, four months, I was like, it wasn't that bad. It really wasn't that bad. We could do it again. It's like your brain just erases it. Motherhood is just, it's such a blessing. And I, that's, that's my greatest title. I love it. It really is. It's incredible. Um, I think like
03:59
It's really eye opening to me, the whole experience. just, knew I was excited to have her and to, you know, go on this journey of parenthood with Jack. And I was as scared as I was excited, which I think is very normal for all the new moms. Yeah. But what I, I didn't expect like within the first week of being a mom, I felt like this whole new piece of me had been born or like this piece of me that had always existed, but I just didn't have access to. it's like, I had
04:28
this magical key that opened it up. And it's been so incredible getting to know that side of me that I guess maybe has always existed, but I didn't realize like moms, I've always said moms are superheroes. If you listen to me on past podcasts, I say it all the time. I'm like, I don't know how moms do what they do. They are superheroes. And now I'm like, Oh, I get it. Like we really do have like a reserve tank. have superpowers. am 100 % convinced. Yes. I, I
04:56
Feel that deep in my soul. Well, before we get started talking about your amazing books, do you mind if I ask you a few questions? Yeah, let's go for it. What made you decide to write your first book? Oh, my goodness. So I had just graduated from college and uh I, unlike a lot of the college students today who read for fun all the time, and I love that. I love that that's a thing.
05:22
um I did not, I was just reading what was required of me and I felt kind of overwhelmed in college. em But when I graduated, I was like, oh, finally I can read what I want to again. And I just dove head first into all of these really popular series that had been happening while I was in college, like Divergent and Hunger Games and then 50 Shades. And before I knew it, I stumbled upon indie romance books.
05:46
And I majored in creative writing, so I knew I wanted to write, but I always thought it would be like non-fiction books. And all of a sudden I found myself thinking about romance. I had all these ideas. I was like, this makes so much sense. I've been a hopeless romantic since I was born. I love love. I'm all about romance. uh And I got an idea for a book. So I told my friends in line for the midnight showing of the last Twilight movie that I was going to write a book and publish it on my 24th birthday. And so that's what I did.
06:15
That is so amazing. Yeah, it was so fun. I love that you were in line for Twilight when you like decided this. I did. And I just went full in like I started writing the next day. I still have notes and stuff from that first drafting experience, which is obviously much different than my experience now. Um, it's just such a good reminder to me to like, not that I didn't learn a lot in college. did, but what I've learned since writing
06:43
has been so much more valuable than what I learned in college. And that first book, think shows it. I, it's like practice makes not perfect, but practice makes better. The more you write, the better you get. And so if any of you ever go back and read my first book, just, I'm sorry in advance, also you're welcome. Enjoy, enjoy the show. I love that. That is so funny. Uh, well, what do you think is your favorite trope to write about? Cause I know you've wrote about a lot of them. Oh,
07:13
I love so many tropes, probably a tie um between like, okay, fake dating or fake engagement or fake anything. I am such a sucker for that. just, you know, I love angst. I love tension. I love a slow burn. So anything where you have them like touching or kissing or in these sort of jealousy situations, but it's fake. But is it fake? No, it's not like that stuff. I eat it up.
07:37
I eat it up. love writing it. I'm like giddy. So the whole time I was writing Blindside, for instance, or False Start, I was just eating it up. And then I also really love to write like a second chance. So for whatever reason, them coming back into each other's life, uh you know, bonus points if there's some sort of love triangle or cheating aspect involved. I love that. Yeah, that checks out because my favorite to read is fake dating marriage inconvenience. So
08:05
Um, I'm an, what's funny is I'm an audible reader or listener, however you want to say it, but I got my raps yesterday and you were my top listen of all the authors that I've listened to. I like, I, it was like 250 something bucks last year. So, amazing. What an honor.
08:29
get so happy when people attack me and they're wrapped like I love to see that I was like their most read or most listened or one of their favorite books of the year. It literally makes my day. So I love that. Well, if you could go back in time and relive the experience of publishing your first book, what would you do differently? Everything.
08:50
Oh my gosh, I am blown away by debut authors now, especially like specifically let's talk about independently published romance authors right now. Right? So those who are self publishing in the romance genre, they have access to so much knowledge that we did not have access to back when I was first starting. I mean, it was 2012 when I started writing 2013 when I published like it just wasn't the same. So
09:18
I had no idea what I was doing. I had no idea about the business aspect of side of things. just, I was, I was just a creative trying to make art. That was literally it. I wanted to write a story. I, my cover was one of my sorority sisters. The picture was taken by some girl that I met in college that I just had her take on like her little Nikon. And I, I designed, I've designed a lot of my covers, but I designed that one in
09:44
in InDesign, not even in Photoshop. Like I didn't even understand Photoshop at the time. So I had no idea what I was doing, but I had passion though. You know, I had drive and I had hunger, which I think is a huge component if you want to make it, especially as a self published author. And I just was like, I'm going to find readers who want to read what I write. I'm, determined. And yeah, that just, that was kind of how it, how it rolled out from there. But if I could go back and redo it, I would love to have
10:12
known everything that I know now and be able to plan like, maybe I will start with a series and I will make sure I've written at least two books before I publish the first one so that I have a consistent schedule and consistent rollout and I can get ahead. Like there's so many things. I would have edited it much better than I did. So yeah, lots of things that I would have changed, but ah at the same time, I'm very thankful for the experience as it stands. So that's amazing.
10:39
Well, how do you like to spend your free time man? Right now? Mostly hanging out with Rosie because I'm obsessed with her. I don't know if this happens to every new mom, but it's like I have like 78,000 photos of her in my phone already. I just love to hang out with her. I'm like she's the best like she's so funny and cute and I could just stare at her all day. I love taking her outside and like watching her discover the world. um Obviously.
11:07
stupid in love with my husband, so I love hanging out with him too. Like we spend a lot of quality time together. uh Because my job is so tied up in a lot of digital, like emails and social media and things like that, once I'm done with work, both of us really just kind of put our phones away and hang out and do stuff together. And I try not to be super active online on the weekends for the same reasons, just to be like present. um And then if I'm hanging out with myself, I'm probably pole dancing.
11:34
or working on getting back into pole or doing yoga or um playing Sims. I sometimes like to play Sims. yeah, like just whatever, hiking. em There's a lot of things, but mostly just trying to be present and kind of like disconnect because I love my job. So it's super easy for me to make it every minute of every day. And I try to find a good balance and set some healthy boundaries there.
12:00
Yes, that's my goal for 2025. I was just talking to someone about this last month um that like, I can't say no. I'm like the type of person I don't like to say no. And I just truly don't disconnect. So I'm taking more time for myself and my family. So that is my goal. And hopefully my husband's gonna hold me accountable.
12:24
I love that goal. And I think you should remind yourself of it every day because I don't know, I can't speak for everyone, but I bet the longer that you go having those times of disconnect, the happier you're going to feel inside. Like social media is great, especially the book community, I think. However, there's a lot of dumpster fire garbage on there. And it's really hard to get it out of your head sometimes. uh
12:48
The first step I took I remember was like I put my phone away after a certain time and it was I think like 830. ah So I was just like after 830 I don't need to be on my phone. I don't need to be watching TV. I can read I can sit and hang out with my family but I can't I don't want to like be looking at a screen that late at night and it's crazy how much better my sleep got and how much better my mood became. It was just it's like directly linked for me personally. So I love that goal.
13:16
Oh man, that is so awesome to hear. So yeah, so, um, I haven't quite mastered it yet. I just, I've been so freaking busy, but, um, but it's because you don't say no, oh no, no, it is hard. get it too. I say, I will say I used to say yes to everything and I would never say no. I just felt, I just, one, I didn't want to miss out on anything. And two, I felt like
13:45
to be a good person, had to always be available to everyone in my life, but that's not the case. Like you can be a great friend, a great daughter, a great whoever, author, reader, connection online to the people in your life while also saying, you know what? I would love to record that podcast with you, but 8 p.m. does not work for me. Can we do another time? You know what I mean? Yes. Yeah. When I first started, my husband...
14:09
He was ready to kill me. He's like, I never see you. You're always recording. I was like, I'm just excited. I'm sorry. But I got it down to where I only, if I'm recording on the weekend, I only do one recording every weekend. Which is when I mainly record because I, you know, I work full time. So, um, it gets crazy around here, but yeah. So I at least got, I got it down to a science now when it comes to recording. I love that. I love that. You're killing it.
14:36
Well, thank you. I just announced my book deal today, too. So we can talk about that as well. Either way. Oh, my gosh. I missed that. Oh, thank you. Thank you. Yeah, I just so Arndell, who they're an imprint of Keeperton, which is T.L. Swan's publishing company. They purchased the rights for paperback to a level or two whiskey, the wrong game and the right player. So they're going to be coming to bookstores this year. Oh, my gosh. That's so freaking exciting.
15:06
So exciting. I'm very excited. I can find it at Target now. That's right. That's the goal. I can't wait to walk into a Target and see my book. I might actually fall on the floor. Okay, so which Target do you go to? Okay, there's a Target over here in Chattanooga in Hickson. That's where I go. That's my Target. I, so if you ever see me there, I was gonna say I'll definitely be sneaking in to sign them there. So
15:35
love that for you. And I will definitely because I like will randomly like go sneak stickers into like books that I usually talk about. uh So I'll definitely like have to find your books and stick some stickers on. I didn't realize that you were a Chattanooga girlie. We could have had this podcast in person. Alright, so let's talk about some of your books. Kings of the Ice man. That is, oh, that's my favorite. Jackson, I just if I could like have a real life
16:04
book boyfriend Jackson would be mine. Jackson 100 % my favorite their story in like book two is for sure my favorite. Oh yeah. And I love that there was like a little nodded Chattanooga in there. Yeah, yeah, the road trip aspect was super fun to write. I love writing road trip romances I have on the way to you as well. But this one was like on the way to use kind of heavy kind of emotionally taxing. It's like a deeper book whereas this one was just
16:34
fun, like it was spicy, there banter, there's all this tension, this like will they or won't they and I was eating it up and I again, we were talking about tropes we love anything forbidden. So the fact that it's like his teammates little sister and he cannot touch her like, oh, I live for it. Yes. So how did you get into sports romance? Like, are you just a
17:00
fan or did you just say, I'm going to try this out and see how it goes. Yeah. I'm a huge sports girly and I don't know why I never thought about it in my earlier books. Like all of my earlier books are kind of like new adult or contemporary. Um, and then I started kind of branching into sports romance with the wrong game. Um, and it kind of like took off from there, but I, I'm
17:24
a huge football girlie and have been my whole life. I'm a season ticket holder for the Buccaneers even still, even though I don't live in Tampa anymore, I still have my season tickets. We try to go a few times every season. um And I also became a hockey fan while I lived in Tampa. I love the Lightning and their whole organization. I went to a game and fell in love and was like, yes, sign me up for more of this. um
17:48
And so, yeah, I, I remember, I mean, I've written the wrong game and the right player, of course, which are both football romances. There's a coach and football aspect in the last book of the Becker brothers, but the red zone rival series was the first time I sat down and plotted out like an entire sports romance series. And I was like, I want to do college because I love new adult and college age characters.
18:10
I love that they're kind of like discovering themselves as they're falling in love. And of course there's so much drama, so much tension, so much angst because it's young adults, like new adults, you know? So I, but I had so much fun with that series and I just was like, I, I, love this experience. I love that you can write so many different tropes within the world of sports and I love writing about the sport itself. So for me, it's just been like a win, win, win. Yes, I love.
18:39
Red zone rivals. Like, oh, it was so good. I am a huge hockey, well, I love hockey romance, but my second favorite is football romance. And I've been, I've been actually like picking football over hockey these days. I just, it's Facebook ads. get me and I'm like, Ooh, sure. I guess cause we're like, just like talking about it nonstop, especially at work right now. So it's like,
19:05
meta hears it is like, okay, I'm gonna give her football. Right? She wants football romance heard. Here it is. Yeah, I, I love football romance. And I mean, anytime if I'm like reading the blurb for a book, even if it's like a small town romance series, but he's like a retired NFL football player or like a hockey a team like a kid's hockey coach. I'm like, yes, I want to inject it into my veins. Which is so funny because I was at
19:34
the Aris tour in Indy. Yes. Back in November. And I lucked out, got some floor seats and I was freaking sitting right in front of Travis and did not know it the entire night. No, you were not. night. And I, at one point I got up to go to the bar and I like literally almost ran into her mother. I was like, Oh my gosh. What were your surprise songs? Do you remember?
20:04
I do not remember because I ended up getting sick uh at the show. I have a lot of stomach issues. I was with my best friend and she gave me some pain medicine. So the last half of the show, I'm just hanging out sitting down. I felt miserable, but I was still trying to enjoy myself. That's so rough. I'm so sorry. I did it to myself because we traveled that day there.
20:31
And because it's about a six and a half ish hour drive from here. And I like just like pigged out on junk food. So I did it to myself. feel you. Yeah. Our stomachs are not uh as indestructible as they were when we were younger. Are they like I just like travel with Pepto now. I'm like, yeah, just in case. Yes. I yeah, I.
20:57
I went to the air store in Tampa and it was just such an incredible experience. And I love that you brought up Taylor and Travis because you know, we were talking a little bit about sports romance and I just finished like final edits and everything on save your breath, which comes out March 20th. uh I'm so excited. And it's like it's kind of Taylor Swift, tree uh vibes just because Mia loves like this huge pop star. And then
21:22
and she ends up getting into like a publicity stunt with uh Alex suitor who's like the bad boy of the NHL, but they kind of grew up together like he lived with her family while he was playing hockey in high school. uh And so there's all these like cute like flashbacks of when they were younger and how they're kind of like falling for each other and stuff. But I don't want to spoil anything. But it gave me the same vibes as I was writing it as like watching one of these uh celebrity romances unfold on screen where you're just like, oh,
21:52
Look at them, I'm obsessed with them. Like look at the way he looks at her. Look at the way he touches her back as he takes her to the car, like all of that stuff. it was so fun to write and uh it's also a really big slow burn, which I love a slow burn. So I'm super pumped about it. Oh my gosh. I can't freaking wait. Let's move on to a portion of the episode where I like to play a little game. Are you down for some smash or pass? Yeah, let's do it. What are the rules? Remind me of the rules.
22:21
Okay, so basically I just did a list of um some characters from your stories and I'll say the name and you tell me if you smash or would pass. But just so we wouldn't smash every single one of them, I did put a limit to five smashes. Five smashes, oh my gosh. I don't need, okay, okay, all right, okay. I wrote what, like, yeah, okay, okay. I can do it, I can do it.
22:51
I'll tell you this. I'll start with Kings of the Ice and then I'll move to Red Zone Rivals. And then at the very end, I have um someone else thrown in there for you. Oh, okay. Okay. Okay. All right. I'm just going to go with it. All right. So I have five smashes. Okay. I'm going to keep count. All right. First up, we have Vince.
23:19
Yeah, I think I'll pass too. Jackson. Oh, smash. Yes, 100 % smash. Will. ah I'm gonna pass. I think I'm gonna smash Will because he was he was another fave. Yes. Smash. I'm gonna say smash.
23:48
because I don't have his full story yet. So that will probably change. That's totally fair. That's totally fair. Oh my gosh. I only have three left. I'm so stressed out. All right. Next up I have Zeke. my gosh. This is so hard. Smash. I would smash Zeke for sure. Yeah, I would smash Zeke as well. Play.
24:17
Oh my god, smash like obviously. Yeah, smash to Holden. Okay, I have to pass on Holden. But I only because I know there are two other guys coming that I want to use. I want to like split my smash equally between them. Okay, because you're about to ask me about Leo, right? Yep, Leo's next on the list. Okay, wait, would you would you smash or pass Holden?
24:47
I'm gonna say pass on Holden. Okay, now we're to Daddy Leo. Now we're to Daddy Are you gonna ask me about Kyle next? Probably.
25:04
Like I
25:13
See you gotta keep track. I only have one left. Okay. I love Leo, but if it's between Leo and Kyle, it has to be Kyle. So I'm going to pass on Leo, which I don't want to pass on Leo. Oh, this is torture. Let me think how many did I, let's see. One, two, three, four. Yeah. I have one left. So yeah, I
25:44
kind of want to move. Can I move a smash from from Zeke to Leo and do Leo and Kyle? I love Zeke, but oh my gosh, Leo and Kyle for me are like top tier of the series so. I'll let you move it. It's your world. We're just living in a candy. uh OK, so what are you going to do? Are you going to smash her past Leo?
26:10
both.
26:13
I'm gun to my head. think if it came between Leo and Kyle, I think I'm gonna smash Leo. Sorry, I hate that. Sorry. and now who's the mystery at the end? Who am I gonna have to automatically pass on? So at the end, we have Jamie. Oh, Jamie. You know what I would actually pass on Jamie because in my head he is with be like,
26:42
I can't even imagine a world where Jamie would smash, you know. Oh my gosh. Yes, I totally get it. I totally get it. So tell us what's up next for you. Well, like we talked about a little bit, Save Your Breath comes out March 20. So I'm very excited about that. The cover reveal is on Monday. So by the time this episode airs in the third season, the cover will be live.
27:07
So you can definitely check that out. It's up for preorder. Like I said, it's, you know, NHL bad boy and pop star, childhood lovers, fake engagement. It's super, super fun. um And then after that, I'll be re releasing the wrong game and the right player this summer into bookstores with the help of Arendelle.
27:28
And I'm so excited. just like cannot wrap my head around the fact that I get to walk into bookstores and see them in stores. So I'm super pumped for that. And they're both up for pre-order right now. Oh my gosh. I'm so excited for you still about this. That is like major news. I'm so excited. Thank you. What about any events? Are you going anywhere in 2025? I am. So I have a couple that are already booked, but I know I will be adding more. We're going to do some little book tours with the re-release of
27:55
these books. So I'm excited about that. But in March, I will be at Magic with the Bells in Orlando. And then I will be at the book besties meet, greet and queue in Knoxville, Tennessee in June. So I've got a couple of signings coming up. For sure. Yeah, I am. I actually found Mary and Ashley on Instagram. And I like join their little little book club virtually because I don't make it up to Knoxville very often.
28:24
but I've actually made some awesome friends through their group. So I will actually get to meet you in person. Amazing. They are the best and their little book group is so fun. They really are. I ended up getting a table and I'm sharing it with one of my author friends, TL Martin. So we'll both be there. So I'm really excited. Yeah, I'm really excited. It's my second event for the podcast. And so the first one I was like,

so nervous. I like talk myself out of talking to like several authors and I had to go back home and be a little keyboard warrior and like, listen, I didn't I didn't meet you but I would love to talk to you. totally get it. I totally get it's intimidating sometimes especially the bigger signings but once you kind of get your nerves out it's like it's just so fun to be around other bookish people. It really is it really is a man like
29:21
I don't think I've ever talked as much as I did at that event. And I kept on chugging water and my husband's like, you have got to stop. You're drinking way too much water. I'm like, it's a nervous habit at this point. Right? Oh, I love it. All right. Well, before we go, please tell my listeners where they can find you at. OK, well, first of all, I just want to thank you so much for having me on. I appreciate you using your platform to kind of spotlight indie authors. It's very, very much appreciated.

But if you're listening, I'm everywhere you are. So TikTok until it gets banned, Instagram for sure. uh My website is candysteiner.com. And if you go there and sign up for my newsletter, I will send you a free ebook. So if you're curious about hearing more about my books or you wanna give me a try, you can do it for free. But yeah, I'm everywhere you are. So literally any social media you can think of, just search for me there.

I love that. Yeah. I'm I just now really got into posting on TikTok and I'm like, why am I even trying when it's going to get banned pretty much? So I know I have like lost my will to live over there. I'm like, I'm going to miss it so much. Yes. Which is funny, because like when I first started my bookstagram account, I would post the same exact stuff on Instagram and TikTok and I just wouldn't do anything on TikTok. And then it started like being
30:41
it flip flop, then it started doing stuff on TikTok, then Instagram. And it just it's crazy how the algorithms are so different. So wild. It's so wild, but we love it. Yes. Yes. I'm sad to see it go. If it does go, I'm I'm holding out hope that they will sell. I know me too. I'm like in living in Delululand that somehow we'll figure it out. But I feel like we've got to just prepare for the worst. You know. Yes.
