Welcome to the Living Word, a daily devotional from the Jenkins Institute. This is week nineteen, the parable of the muskard seed. This week's devotional is written by Daniel Welker. It's Tuesday, shaded in the kingdom, in the peace of the kingdom. Mark 4, 32. Yet when it is sown, it grows up and becomes larger than the all the garden plants and puts out large branches so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade. Have you ever looked up pictures of a mustard tree? If you have not, get your phone and look at images of mustard trees. Notice how much shaded area they provide and imagine how many birds' nests they could house. Then consider how many people could rest beneath the shade it provides. Jesus is comparing this to the kingdom of God. This is such a beautiful picture because when I look at the pictures of a mustard tree, I imagine napping for days. I can almost feel the perfect amount of a cool fall breeze tickling my nose. This is how I envision the peace in the kingdom of God, where we can enjoy the shade away from the cares of this world. I'm reminded of one stormy night when I was at my grandma's house, being afraid of the storm, and my grandma encouraged me to pray to God to protect us from the storm. I remember that being some of the best sleep of my life. It was the same experience as sleeping the night after I was baptized for the remission of my sins. Both nights I put my life in God's hands. Today I will trust God to give me the refuge, shade that I desperately need in my life. You've been listening to Hearing God's Stories, the Parables of the Bible.
