Humility may be the most needed and most difficult virtue to possess for

the follower of Jesus. Norman McGowan shared that Winston Churchill

was once asked, “Doesn’t it thrill you to know that every time you make a

speech, the hall is packed to overflowing?” “It’s quite flattering,” replied

Sir Winston. “But whenever I feel that way, I always remember that if

instead of making a political speech I was being hanged, the crowd would

be twice as big.”

Week twenty one Wednesday The Humility of the Righteous Today's Scripture Matthew twenty five thirty seven through thirty nine by Keith Harris and I'm Gavin Beardon Humility may be the most needed and most difficult virtue to possess for the follower of Jesus. Norman McGowan shared that Winston Churchill was once asked, doesn't it thrill you to know that every time you make a speech the hall is packed to overflowing? It's quite flattering, replied Sir Winston, but whenever I feel that way, I always remember that if instead of making a political speech I was being hanged, the crowd would be twice as big. Jesus told how those on his right, the sheep, the righteous would ask, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you? Matthew twenty five, thirty seven through thirty nine. Some may ask, where do we see humility in these righteous people? Notice the question again, Lord, when did we? This would suggest their lack of awareness. Their serving was not simply a box to check on a long list of to-dos. Their serving was part of their lifestyle, part of their personality. Their serving revealed their heart, and Jesus identified that. For us, Jesus serves as the ultimate example of humility. Philippians 2, 1 through 8. The question of the righteous referenced by Jesus reflects the nature of unconscious virtue. It speaks to the difference between performative faith and genuine discipleship. As followers of Jesus, we must strive to live humbly, not self-centered, self exalting, or self promoting. The righteous ones mentioned by Jesus did not even realize they were serving Christ. They simply lived lives of service to others, including or especially the marginalized. While we live seeking to honor God and Christ, we must serve quietly and without expectation, recognition, understanding how quiet acts of love fulfill the heart of the gospel. We must also be intentional in modeling humble service. Finally, we must follow the example of Jesus. Today I will humble myself in the sight of the Lord.
