Week 27, Monday: The Characters

First, look at the lawyer. He asked Jesus a question, “to put him to the

test,” asking what one must do to have eternal life. Jesus responds by

asking, “What does the Bible say?” The lawyer quotes Deuteronomy 6:5

and Leviticus 19:18, and Jesus says, “That’s right.” “But he, desiring to

justify himself,” asked, “Who is my neighbor?” (Luke 10:25-29, ESV). This

question generates the parable. And we will see this week that the lawyer

asked the wrong question. Asking the right question is important.

Week 27, the Parable of the Good Samaritan, Luke 10, 30 through 37 by Russ Crosswhite. I'm Dale Hubbard. Monday, the characters, Luke 10, 25 through 35. Each person plays an important role in the overall message Jesus is teaching. First, look at the lawyer. He asked Jesus a question to put him to the test, asking what one must do to have eternal life. Jesus responds by asking, What does the Bible say? The lawyer quotes Deuteronomy 6 5 and Leviticus 19 18, and Jesus says, That's right. But he desiring to justify himself by asking, Who is my neighbor? Luke 10 25 through 29. This question generates the parable. And we will see this week that the lawyer asked the wrong question. Asking the right question is important. Second, there was a traveler. The implication is that this man was a Jew. He travels from Jerusalem to Jericho, a distance of about seventeen miles. It's a dangerous route, and he fell among robbers who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. Luke chapter ten and verse thirty. He needs help. Third, there was a priest. The man was not going to worship, but instead was possibly heading home to Jericho. He had been to Jerusalem to worship, but apparently his worship was more ritual than life changing. It didn't impact his life interactions with others. Fourth, there was the Levite. He, like the priest, saw him and passed by on the other side, Luke 10 32. These two religious elites of Israel, the priest and the Levi, did not let the law and worship of God impact their daily life. Fifth, there was a Samaritan who came where he was, and when he saw him he had compassion, Luke 10 33. He bandaged his wounds by applying oil and wine. He puts the injured man on his own animal and takes him to an end. He gives the innkeeper two dendari to take care of him, and if he spends more, he'll repay him when he comes back. Today I will.
