I got to put together my 2-year-old daughter’s Little Tikes
playhouse that her Pops and Beppa bought for her. It only had 4
walls, two connecting roof pieces, and a door—all made of pink and
purple pieces of plastic. And for the record, I can build. I have
power tools. I have a sliding compound miter saw. I make the wood
work, yes, I say it that way on purpose. I can piece together some
plastic walls for my toddler. Who needs instructions? Not this guy!
At least, I thought I could.
Welcome to Hearing God's Stories, a daily devotional on the parables presented by the Jenkins Institute. Week 28. The Parable of the Friend in Deed, Luke 11, 58, by Austin Johnson, I'm Dell Jenkins. Mundy, a teachable spirit. I got to put my two-year-old daughter's little Tykes playground that her pops and Beppa bought for her together. It had only four walls, two connecting roofs, and a door. We are tasked with diving into profound and practical lessons of the parable The Friend at midnight this week from Luke 11, 5 through 8. What a spiritual muscle building parable. Before we can expound on the words of Jesus, I'd like to draw all of our attention to the initial question that got Jesus into the parabolic mode. In Luke 11 1, the disciples inquired of Jesus, Lord, teach us to pray as John taught his disciples from the SV. Isn't that isn't there beauty and humility? The disciples' humility asked humbly asked Jesus to teach them. They had a teachable spirit. Do you have a teachable spirit? Are you willing to listen and learn? Do you soak up teaching from scriptures on Sunday? Are you in a small group Bible study with throughout the week? If not, are you podcasting, reading books like this one, or having some biblical conversation with spiritual mentors? Someone with a teachable spirit does not sit back and wait for moments to rise. They engage one who can instruct them further. Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance. Proverbs 1-5. Charles Spurgeon is credited saying something like, You can't grow in grace if you've already arrived. A teachable spirit is a soul where God plants wisdom and brings forth maturity.
