Midnight in the parable represents the inconvenient and/or
desperate moments of life. The unexpected events, horrific tragedy,
or moments of feeling lost. Jesus elevates the disciples’ need to go
to God in all things, at all times, with all desperation. Think about
it, it’s not possible to inconvenience the God who created time!
Jesus was teaching His disciples how to pray by teaching about the
God to whom they pray.
Welcome to Hearing God's Stories, a daily devotional on the parables presented by the Jenkins Institute. Week 28. The Parable of the Friend in Me. Luke 11, 58. By Austin Johnson. I'm Del Jenkins. Wednesday, your go-to God. Today's Scripture, Luke 11, 5. And he said to them, Which of you has a friend who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say, Friend, lend me three loaves, for I have a friend of mine who has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him. Luke 11, 5 and 6. Midnight in the parable represents the inconvenient and or desperate moments of life, the unexpected events, horrific tragedy, or moments of feelings of loss. Jesus elevates the disciples' need to go to God in all things, at all times, with all desperation. Think about it. It's not impossible to inconvenience the God of creating time. Jesus was teaching his disciples how to pray by teaching them about the God to whom they pray. God is ready to hear our prayers at all times. Unlike human beings who grow tired, distracted, or overwhelmed, God is never unavailable, never distant, and never inconvenienced. His compassion is limitless, his patience is perfect, his attention to divine is divine. Psalm 145.18 explains it beautifully. The Lord is near to all who call upon him and to all who call on him in truth. The takeaways from this parrot portion of the parable are so inspiring for everyday life. Have you ever found yourself saying, I can't pray for that again? I've already asked for forgiveness too many times in a row, or God doesn't want to hear from me. Wrong, wrong, and wrong. God doesn't say, Don't bother me. He says, Come to me, Matthew 11 28. God doesn't close the door on you. He says knock and it will be open, Luke 11 9. Today I will silence my critical conscience and accept God's true nature. I will also seek to be Godlike for someone in my life who is in need.
