What word comes to your mind when you hear the word, Christian?
Would it be the words “saved,” “joyful,” “redeemed,” or “Christ?” There
are many possibilities. Surely one word that should be in that list is the
word “blessed.” In the parable of the watchman in Luke 12, Jesus said, “If
he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake,
blessed are those servants” (Luke 12:38, ESV). If those who are in Christ
are spiritually awake and watching when the Lord returns, they will be
the most blessed of people!
Welcome to Hearing God's Stories, a daily devotional on the parables presented by the Jenkins Institute.
SPEAKER_00Week 30, Wednesday, the Parable of the Watchful Service, Luke chapter 12, verses 35 through 40 by Steve Baggett, and I'm Doyle Ferris. Blessed Today's Scripture, Luke chapter 12 and verse 38. What word comes to your mind when you hear the word Christian? Would it be the words saved, joyful, redeemed, or Christ? There are many possibilities. Surely one word that should be in that list is the word blessed. In the parable of the watchman in Luke twelve, Jesus said, If he comes in the second watch or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants. Luke 12 38. If those who are in Christ are spiritually awake and watching when the Lord returns, they will be the most blessed of people. The Apostle Paul said in the letter to the Ephesians that Christians are blessed with every spiritual blessing, by being chosen, by being predestined for adoption, with redemption, with forgiveness, and with an inheritance. Could there be a more impressive list of blessings for the faithful child of God? James wrote, but the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets, but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. James chapter one verse twenty five. Merely possessing a Bible is insufficient for being blessed. We must look deeply into the Word of God and follow His teaching. John wrote, and I heard a voice from heaven saying, Write this, blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. Blessed indeed, says the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them. Revelation chapter fourteen, verse thirteen. This verse may have been read at more funerals of Christians than any other. David Roper wrote, It is important to emphasize that this verse does not promise blessings to all who die, but only those who die in the Lord. Today, I will reaffirm my commitment to living for and watching for the Lord.
