Baby Steps with Christ
Leigh Trupin: Welcome to another episode of Baby Steps with Christ. I'm your host, Leigh Trupin. This is where we learn to develop a relationship with God one honest step at a time. Where we learn we don't need a middleman and can go directly to God ourselves.
The Missing Link in Christian Books
Today I want to talk to you about a text I received from my dad that got me a little fired up. He texted me to tell me about a new book called Nothing is Impossible With God. And immediately I thought, now that's original. Like I haven't heard that a million times before. But I was still curious and I asked who it was by, and he told me it was by Shannon Bream. Now I'm unfamiliar with her, and so is he, but he obviously looked her up because moments later he texted me to let me know that she's a Fox News anchor on Sundays, and she has three best-selling books: The Love Stories of the Bible, The Mothers and Daughters of the Bible, and The Women of the Bible.
And I immediately rolled my eyes and responded to him by letting him know I will not be reading her books. But if you're interested in them, I do encourage you to read them. But for me, this just proves my point. It's the same old, same old. I can look to just about any Christian author and get the same concept in different form. But do you see the missing link? Nothing about developing a relationship with God. And this just proves my point about why Baby Steps with Christ is a different kind of ministry.
A Relationship with God, Not the Bible
Your relationship is not with the Bible, it's with God. And if you've listened to me for a while, you know my story. I didn't grow up knowing God; he introduced himself to me. And when I wanted to learn more about him, I did what I was conditioned to believe. I went to church, I read the Bible, I tithed. My spiritual immaturity led me to get so angry with God that I grew to hate him. And my hate and my anger led me to call out to a devil I didn't really believe in until I became possessed by a very real devil, which I didn't even know was possible.
And when I tried to be set free, I ran to the church. I read my Bible. I tithed. But none of that worked. I was only set free when I learned to call out directly to God. I was taught wrong until I developed a relationship with the only one who taught me right, God Himself. And you can read my full story in my book, Dear New Believer, Love God. If you want to read about Christianity in a way that probably you haven't heard before, I encourage you to grab a copy of my book on Amazon. Or if you prefer the PDF version of it, it's on my website, babystepswithchrist.com.
And my point really isn't to promote my book, although I do hope you'll support me and get it, but my point is that you don't develop a relationship with the Bible or with church. You develop a relationship with God. The Bible, church, tithing should never be a substitute to Him. You don't need to spend hours a day reading and memorizing Bible verses. You don't have to spend all your free time worshiping God in church. Include these things in your life as God leads you to, but do not make them your top priority. Your relationship with God should always be top priority. Church, reading the Bible, tithing should always be secondary, not the other way around.
Finding the Fun Side of God
You know, when I first started following God, I thought Christianity was boring. Like I had to read my Bible every day, practically all day long, and attend church every Sunday, look for activities within my church to keep me busy. But then God taught me this is not what it means to follow him. God wants you to include him in your everyday life, in your activities, whatever it is you do for fun. Include God in it. Include him in your job, in your chores, in your good moments, your bad moments. He wants you to get to know him. And he wants you to learn to follow where he leads.
I've learned God can be fun. I invite him in my daily activities and outings. We listen to music together, we watch movies together, and despite the misconception of what you believe you're allowed to watch and listen to as a Christian, don't be fooled. I don't only watch Christian movies, I watch whatever interests me. And I don't even listen to Christian music. I love me some music, especially the 80s, 90s, early to mid-2000s. Man, when I hear a good song from that time, it moves me in a way I can't explain to you. Christian music doesn't do that for me. And I don't feel guilty for that. And God's okay with it.
What I do is invite him to listen to music with me. And he does. Now I will say, as I've grown in my relationship with him, there are some movies I used to watch and some songs I used to listen to that he's helped me realize I should no longer be watching and listening to. So I no longer do. But for the most part, man, we jam to some of those songs that I absolutely love to get down to. And as long as I don't feel God telling me that what I'm listening to or watching is no longer for me, I listen to and watch whatever I please. And you know why? Because my relationship isn't with those things, it's with God.
I include him in my daily activities, and I am open and willing to his correction when I need to be corrected. That's what a relationship with God looks like. My relationship with him is far from boring. And yours doesn't have to be boring either. What do you like to do for fun? Invite God into it and have fun with him. Get to know the fun side of him that no one is talking about.
Following God's Lead
And listen, if you want to read those books by Shannon Bream, I encourage you to. You may find something valuable in them. Or maybe God is trying to teach you something in your relationship with Him by leading you to read those books. Don't misunderstand me when I say I'm not going to read them. Reading them is not something God is leading me to do. But if he does, if he leads me there, if he wants me to read them, I will.
And speaking of reading books, if you've already read my book, Dear New Believer, Love God, and you want to dive deeper, I do have a study guide on my website. And it's designed to help you in your relationship with God. It's designed to help you dive deeper into each chapter of my book. And I think you'll get a lot from it. So if you've been enjoying my content and want to support me, please grab a copy of both my book and my study guide.
And contact me and let me know if my ministry is helping you develop your own relationship with God. I want to hear your story. Also, if there's anything you want me to dive deeper into, let me know.
