I have a message from the Village Jedi. Max Rebo, hit it! Happy Friday, everybody, and welcome back to my Star Wars podcast hosted by your local village Jedi. I'm Marina, and if you're new here, welcome. And if you're not, welcome back. Obviously, we're here to talk about Star Wars. If you're a new fan, welcome. I'm so happy to have you here. Um, and if you're not, uh, you know the drill, we're gonna go over ways that you can get into the discussion, join in on the episodes. So far, the show has been getting a lot of love, and I'm so grateful for it. We've got some exciting things on the horizon. Um, if you weren't here last week, I was able to be a guest host on one of my favorite Star Wars podcast, Empire Radio. If you guys haven't checked that out, I'd encourage you to. I'll go ahead and put the link to that in the description. Um, also, as far as joining the discussion, um, I have social media, TikTok, Instagram, Substack. Go follow those at the Village Jedi. Or if you want, you could write in an email and I'll read it on air. We can discuss it together at tvjpod at gmail.com. Because really the whole point of this is to talk about something we all know and love, which is Star Wars. So if you're here, you're probably a Star Wars fan. And if you're not, you probably want to become one. So um, I have a lot to yap about today. I've been a little bit sick this week, so bear with me. But I wanted to jump on and just kind of talk about something. I thought we could open the archives a little bit on something new, at least to me. I do not know a lot about kyber crystals, and so I thought we could go over that together a little bit. Um, but before we get into that, like I said, go check out the Empire Radio podcast. And also I said last week that, because last week we did like a host interview. You guys should go listen to that episode where I read in kind of some listeners' questions and answered those. We discussed that a little bit together. And I had said before that I was workshopping a name for the fans of the show. Obviously, we're all Star Wars fans, but what would I want to call like names of my show, like fans of my show? Um, and because I'm the village Jedi, I was thinking maybe villagers? I don't know. I've been kind of kicking it around the last week. Let me know what you guys think about that. If it's totally dumb, I get it, and I'll keep work shopping, I'll get back to the drawing board. But kind of the thought with that, obviously the village Jedi, but I also was thinking like they say it takes a village to raise a podcast, um, and we're raising this together, kind of seeing what it grows up to be. So that's kind of in the works. So welcome back, villagers. Is that cringe? I don't know. I don't know. I'm just kind of rolling with the punches, so we will see. Um, for my episode to notes today, pretty much everything I got is off the internet. Like I said, I don't know a lot about kyber crystals. There's a lot of deep dive YouTube videos about that, and I would encourage you to go check those out. A lot of podcast episodes from different creators, very informative. But what's kind of interesting, as with everything in Star Wars lore, is what is part of legends versus what is part of canon. Um, and so everything that I got for this episode, we're just gonna go over the canon portion because um legends is part of what is known as the extended universe, which is as broad and big and intimidating as it sounds, at least to me for someone who doesn't have a lot of experience with it. Um, it's basically like lots of information on what Star Wars was in the hands of the fans pre-Disney. So Disney bought Star Wars in 2012, so everything that happened before then is considered part of the extended universe, kind of like the wild, wild west of the Star Wars fandom. I think a lot of books, a lot of characters, different storylines, plot points, villains. It's very large. And so I was a little intimidated by that aspect of kyber crystals. Wikipedia has a lot of information on that. So today we're just gonna go over kind of what the canon or lore accurate within Star Wars media um had to say about them. And I'm thinking about kind of making this a series because there's a lot of things about Star Wars I don't know. That's why I started a podcast. I know enough to love it, and I know enough to yap about it for hours and hours, hence the show, and I'm putting my voice and my knowledge on the internet, but there's still a lot that I want to learn. And as with most of us, there's a lot of stories yet to be told that we're excited to see. The new movie is coming out, there's a couple other movies on the horizon, some new games, books are always in the works, comics, so there's a lot of new media up and coming, but as far as all the media up until now, there is a lot in the extended universe pre-2012. So I was thinking we could just focus on the canon today as far as kyber crystals. Maybe I'll do an episode later about kind of what the legends say about them, but I really only had time to put together notes specifically for the canon aspect of kyber crystals within the Star Wars universe. So we're gonna get into that today. And if you guys have any ideas for like future episodes where I can do research, things that maybe are kind of like not well known, but are important and interesting concepts. Like I was thinking about doing one on like the crisps, which if you don't know, that's okay. They are a like alien species that are pretty prominent in the Thrawn stories that we're hoping to see in live action. Um, they're kind of like the big bads, and so I was thinking about doing like a deep dive on them. So ideas like that, where if you're kind of like an experienced Star Wars fan, you know a lot of lore, especially in the expanded universe, and you think like, oh, that might be interesting to a new fan, or might be interesting to fans who, you know, it's not well known. Those are the kind of stuff that I would like to do these kind of deep dive episodes on. But for now, I thought we could just kind of talk about something that's a little more surface, well known, but maybe there's some things in here that you haven't heard of, I definitely haven't heard of, and we're gonna get into that. So rambling as always, what's new? That's how we do it here at the TVJ podcast. So, like I said, most of my notes are gonna be from Wookipedia, which, if you're listening and you don't know what that is, that's okay. It's basically what it sounds Wikipedia for the Star Wars fans. Um, Wookie is the alien species that Chewbacca is. Um, so it's just kind of a play on words, Wikipedia, Wikipedia, all things Star Wars. Go check that out. Okay, so kyber crystals. In the Canon tab on the Wikipedia page, there's a lot of information on kyber crystals, what they are, what they represent, who uses them, where they've been used, a lot of cross-references. So I just kind of dug up a few pieces that we could discuss together that I thought might be interesting to you guys as well. Also, if you're watching on YouTube, the hat, it's a Grogu hat, and I love it. I got it at the mall a couple years ago. Anyways, not pertinent, not important. Kyber crystals are force crystal formations primarily used by force users. So, read my notes here. In ancient beginnings, these crystals were worshipped by primitive groups because the crystals could resist the elements. A lot of this stuff I didn't know. Like they wouldn't burn, freeze, or break, and so thus they were viewed as an eternal object carrying memories of the past. Which in my mind makes a lot of sense. Okay, if you see this thing that has been around forever and ever, like I started thinking about the fascination that humans have with rocks, right? Like geodes and crystals, like lava rocks, obsidian, just the different properties of what these rocks have, and like the different studies that have been done on what kind of energies they carry, as far as like the frequencies within the crystals, and within the certain rocks, like the densities, and just how long rocks have been around. So obviously, in the Star Wars universe, a cool rock is a cool rock. Like if humans think rocks are cool, everybody thinks rocks are cool, even aliens, and this just confirms that. So it's a cool rock. And over time, early Jedi kind of started to realize that these crystals were also connected to the same energy that connected them to each other, which was the force. Um, which, you know, maybe I'll do a deep dive on that. But the force, as we learn in the prequels, kind of what Qui-Gonjin goes into, is like they're midacloriens. So everybody has them, but some have more than others. And if you are a force user, you're able to tap into your midaclorions, which means maybe you have a little bit more than the average person, and that's what allows you to kind of like move objects, alter reality, is because you're able to manipulate midaclorions, which exist in every living thing. So the Jedi find these cool rocks, they find out that the rocks also have metacloriens, and they're like, okay, we're gonna take it upon ourselves to kind of monopolize these rocks. Um, they started to view themselves as like the crystals advocates and protectors, kind of like monopolizing them a little bit. Like, okay, we know that like other ancient beings found these cool rocks, but like they have significant meaning to us especially. And so we're just gonna go ahead and like make sure that they remain sacred and remain like safe, basically. We do not want them taken advantage of, we do not want people who don't understand the force to be tampering with them because they're actually pretty powerful rocks. So that makes sense to me. But something that was interesting in the Wikipedia article it said that some believe that this could have been the start of the Jedi Order's deep-seated greed for mystery and power, since even one small piece can power a lightsaber. Which is interesting because the entire prequel trilogy is about the fall of the Jedi Order. Where did that start? Potentially it could have started here. The Jedi are very obsessed with being mysterious, like they love the aesthetic of I know something you don't know. Like they walk around with cool cloaks, they like use Jedi mind tricks, they have these special weapons that no one else can use unless you're a Jedi. Like they kind of love to be the Pikmy girls. They're the it girls of the galaxy, the Jedi are. So everyone wants to be like us, you know. So of course they're walking around and they're like, oh yeah, kyber crystals, if you know, you know. Like, duh. They're dear divas. Jedi's are divas, confirmed. Especially when it comes to kyber crystals. Okay, so that makes sense to me. They are kind of greedy little munchkins. They're like whatever secrets we have, we have. And even the Jedi Council will not reveal secrets to just anyone, just because you're a Jedi, I don't have to tell you anything. So I don't know. I don't know. I agree. I agree. Wikipedia is kind of onto something, if you ask me. So moving on, they aren't batteries that need to be charged either. Like when you put a kyber crystal into a man-made object, such as a lightsaber or other weapons, it doesn't need to be charged. Like it already has an energy, it's like it is a source of energy. It's like um kind of like a man, what is the word I'm looking for? Oh, help me out, guys. I know that you can't talk to me, but I'm talking to you. What am I thinking of? It's some sort of power source, okay? Where if you are a strong person, then the crystal is gonna feed off of that. Like you you kind of start to work together, which we'll get into. Long story short, it does not need to be charged. A little bit of the legends I dabbled into said that there are books and references to the crystals needing to be recharged, brought to its original power source. Um, kind of like I was thinking, like, there's any DC nerds out there, kind of like a Green Lantern battery, like if you if you go to Oa, like OA is kind of like where they get their batteries, where they get their rings, like, but every Green Lantern has their own charger for their ring. But like sometimes the charger runs out of juice and needs to be taken back to the source. That's kind of what Legends was hinting at that there's been some aspects of that. But like I said, EU legends, very big, very, very intimidating, did not get into canon. It's an infinite power source, so it does not need to be charged, it does not need to be like it never dies, it just is, um, which is interesting. Um, I also wrote down that because they aren't batteries, they kind of act as like a vessel of the force, like a lens. So users will concentrate their force energy down through the crystal, kind of like a funnel, and that's what causes them to power the lightsaber. So, like I'm holding my lightsaber hilt, which is like the tube that the crystal goes in, and I'm using my energy, I'm sending my energy into the hilt, and then the crystal is responding to that energy by powering the lightsaber. So super interesting. I did not know that. Um, I also was writing down that because this energy, um, this is an energy-related device, the lightsaber is, the crystal feeds primarily on my connection to the force, like I just mentioned. So if I'm strong in the force, my bond with my lightsaber is gonna be even stronger. Like I might be better in combat, the force will, you know, do what it needs to do to help me kind of foresee a couple seconds ahead to be a better um warrior. You work together, you're a team. Um, and so with that in mind, the crystals are alive and semi-sentient, like they they can't speak to you, but your energies respond to one another, which is interesting. Um, I also read that they are grown naturally on various planets and caves, and that force users are able to kind of feel their presence. Like when you go and pick out your crystal as a Jedi Youngling, you know yours because it calls to you, and vice versa, like you're connected to each other. It's like an empathy connection. And I wrote down that it's kind of like a puppy, like a crystal chooses you. Um, for any dog lovers out there, um, I see you, I am you, but you all know how it is. Like, like you go pick out a puppy, or maybe you go to a rescue shelter and you're gonna pick out a rescue dog. They choose you, like they really do. When you go pick out a puppy, and there's a bunch of them, they're all like climbing all over each other. At least for us, when we went and got our dog, um, they were all climbing all over each other, you know, they're crying and just happy that another person is there hoping to give them food and little treats and cuddles and loves. But the one that we wanted was over by the food eating. Like all his brothers and sisters had left their bowls behind, and he was over there like eating the food, and we were like, Oh, we want him. So, like, that is kind of what this is kind of giving to me is like it's like a puppy, like you just know, right? You you know you want a dog before you leave, you know you want a crystal before you go, but you don't know which one. You'll know when you get there, and so that's kind of what this whole process is. Okay, so one popular planet that we see kyber crystals um depicted is in an arc of the clone wars, which we'll go over some Clone Wars arcs next week, um, called Ilum. It's an ice planet. I hope I'm pronouncing that right. If I'm not, put me on blast in the comments. I do not care. Um, I want to be educated. So on Ilum, the younglings go in, as I said, and look for their crystals. They call to them. It's kind of like this trial. So younglings are kids who are aspiring Padawans. If you get chosen to be a Padawan, you get trained to be a Jedi Knight. And then as a Jedi Knight, you get trained to be a master, and certain masters are elected to be on the council. Like it's this whole hierarchy. But it starts as a youngling. You go through various trainings and trials, and it's kind of like your rite of passage to get your kyber crystal, which you will have for the rest of your life, to then assemble your first lightsaber hilt. The hilt may change, but the crystal typically they hold on to that with their life because you're connected to it. So in the arc, we see this group of younglings and they go into the cave of Illam and they have a certain amount of time to get their crystals. Um, because it's an ice planet, and as the sun goes down, the door is starting to freeze. So if you're not back in time, the door is frozen and you'll be locked in there till the sun comes back out. So they're running around, they go through various tests, and each test they accomplish, each one gets their crystal for it. So, like some of them go through a test of patience, courage, um like uh being able to be alone, like just little tests that are specific to them, and if they pass it, then the crystal is like, okay, like I can trust you, we're bonded now. So that's on Ilum. Um, and that's kind of the main planet we see as far as like physical crystals. We also see another planet later in Rogue One where there's a reference to crystals, but as far as like physically seeing a Star Wars planet, and that place is specifically for crystals, this is kind of the only one that we see in physical media. Um, books, comics, I do not know, but as far as like TV shows, movies, I'm well versed in that. This is this is where we see that. Um, I also wrote down an interesting quote from Luke Skywalker, uh, because we see this in in the show that each crystal each kyber crystal starts out clear, but once it is awakened by the force, its color shifts to match the nature of its master. And that's from the book Secrets of the Jedi. So on Ilum, each of the kids they get their crystal and it is clear, but once they build their lightsabers and they turn them on, some are blue, some are green. Um, because the crystal and the wielder, they're working as a team, and so the color is decided by the wielder, but it's really the crystal that's doing the work. The crystal is like, okay, I'm getting blue, I'm getting green, and then like that's the color. So the color really does reflect the bond that the wielder has with the crystal. So with that in mind, um, the colors are very significant. Um, at first, when you get it, it's clear, um, kind of whitish to symbolize the purity. Um, and then we only see white lightsabers a couple times. We'll go we'll go over that um in Star Wars Canon, and it's usually a pretty big deal. It's very significant. But the other colors I thought we could go over together, which is really, really fun. I love colors. Um, there isn't like a specific canon chart. I looked and looked and looked. It's more so just bits and pieces that fans and creators have gathered to kind of put together their theories, what they believe, what's most likely for what these colors represent, just to kind of keep the lore going, keep the the fun of it. Um, because that's one of the funnest things as a Star Wars fan, right? You think about like, oh, if I was in the Star Wars world, like what species would I want to be? What color lightsaber would I have? Like, would I be a bounty hunter? Like, it's kind of fun to imagine where you would be. And one of your typical first questions is like, what lightsaber color would I have? So we're gonna go over that together. I'm so excited. So the first one is blue. I was reading that blue is the Jedi Guardians. Okay, this is focusing on combat, strength, protecting the innocent. It's the most common because these are all core beliefs of a light side user, of a Jedi. And it's actually a fun fact that George Lucas chose blue because in the original trilogy, A New Hope, we see a blue light, a blue lightsaber for the first time. Darth Vader and Obi Wan. One fight, so we see a blue lightsaber and a red lightsaber. George Lucas said he chose blue because cinematically, blue for the good guys versus red for the bad guys makes sense. Like it made fights easy to follow and it made the editing simple. So like viewers could understand what was going on, who to root for, who to root against just by looking at the colors. So originally, to my knowledge and to my research, there wasn't really a significant meaning. George was not like, you know what, I love blue. He's not like sitting there, he's like, I think blue is just so strong and powerful, and it's just the vibe. Like when I think of someone who is an iconic warrior soldier, it's blue. Like it's that is not that deep. Like the fans are the ones that took the colors and ran, and I'm here for it. A lot of fans are here for it. So blue, Jedi Guardians. If that resonates with you, congratulations. You are a blue lightsaber user. Green. Green are the Jedi um kind of consolars. Not counselors, consolars. Is that how you pronounce it? I don't know. Um, the word basically means an official representative of a governmental organization, such as the Jedi Order. These users emphasize diplomacy, harmony, and a deep understanding of the force. So, like Qui-Gon Jin, a very popular Jedi who has a green lightsaber. In the book Master Apprentice by Claudia Gray, it's revealed just how obsessed Qui-Gon is with force prophecies. And he's super into like ancient Jedi texts and knowledge. So, like green lightsaber users users, like even Yoda, are very heavy into like what does this mean? Like they're very heavy into the meaning of life and like why are we here? And you know, yes, we're Jedi, and yes, we're protectors of the peace, but like what does that mean? Like they're very philosophical. So if you're like that, congratulations. Green is your color queen. Um, next is purple. Purple is associated with balance between light and dark, they're very logical beings. Like there is a right way and there is a wrong way. And we see that reflected a lot in Mace Windu's character. In the um Revenge of the Sith novelization, which I talked about last week, it's right there. Um, it is revealed that Mace Windu, he is obsessed with the Republic. Like, all he wants to do is keep the Republic safe. He is devoted to making sure that the Republic just has his loyalty. So when you think about that, someone who's kind of patriotic in that way, there is a right and a wrong. Like, there is a right way to do things and there is a wrong way to do things. And Mace Windu is like that. Like he's very like, this is how things need to be done. And he is just so devout in his beliefs of what's right and what's wrong. So that's kind of what purple um blade wielders are more known for. Like when you see a character, they light up their blade uh automatically. You kind of know a little bit about their character already, just based on what color their saber is. But fun fact, a lot of Star Wars fans out there know this. If you do not, that is okay. I thought it was kind of funny to share. Um, Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Mace Windu in the prequels, um, actually asked George Lucas if they could edit him wielding a purple lightsaber. Like he it was only really introduced um because he specifically requested it. He's like, I don't really want blue or green. Like, are there other colors? And George was like, Well, blue and green are the good guys, like, and Samuel L. Jackson was like, Can I have purple? Like, that would be kind of dope. And George is like, Yeah, I'll think about it. And then he eventually did agree. So he was saying, like, he wanted his character to stand out during that famous battle of Geonosis in episode two, Attack of the Clones, where there's just a ton of lightsabers. He like he wanted his character to stand out. He was like, purple would be so dope, bro. Like, there's just this rainbow of colors, and how cool would it be if I was purple, like the one purple. So kind of funny. I do like that. So, anyways, if I said anything that resonated with you in the purple category, congratulations. Welcome to Club Purple. Um, yellow, we're gonna move on, is linked to Jedi Sentinels or Temple Guards. These people, um, they represent a balance between skill and duty. Um, the Jedi and Sith both have temples that contain ancient artifacts, texts, and sometimes they're even like glorified tombs. So the guardians of these things kind of view themselves in that way. Like, we need to protect everything that this sacred place stands for, everything that this sacred knowledge stands for. So they're not really like one side or the other, they're just pro-protecting. They're like, this is very important, this is very sacred. Like, we need to just make sure that this is preserved for future generations, for historical purposes. Nothing is gonna get between me and that important artifact. So those are the yellow guys. Um, we see a yellow blade um in Rebels. I think we see one in Clone Wars. I can't remember off the top of my head, but we definitely see it in Rebels. Cain and Jarrus um confronts a temple guard, and we see like a double-bladed yellow saber, and so that was really cool. Um, but Rey also has a yellow lightsaber at the end of the last movie, um, Rise of Skywalker. And so that kind of gives us some insight into how she views her current role in the galaxy. Like the last time we see her, she has that yellow blade, and it shows that she does very much view herself as sort of a protector of the Jedi and their knowledge, everything they stood for. She is kind of like the remaining one. She destroyed the Sith, the Jedi are starting fresh. Like, we're just gonna completely start over, and I am in possession of knowledge from both sides. So, very interesting. I like yellow, it's my personal favorite. Pink. Slay. Pink is not a very common color, I will just say. So if you're kind of like, I'm not really like all the other Jedi, you're probably pink. Iconic sleigh. Um, pink lightsaber wielders are heart-led. They put their heart on their sleeve, they lead with compassion, hope. They have unconventional strengths. Um, they also kind of have this understanding of a balance between the Jedi and Sith philosophy. Not so much like I'm balanced between both, like yellow, but more so like, yeah, I can see both sides. Like, I don't really agree, but like I get it. Like my heart is telling me like I get it. I wrote down that I personally think Ezra Bridger would have had a pink lightsaber in the later seasons of Clone Wars had his character journey gone in that direction. If you haven't watched Rebels yet, Ezra Bridger is a very balanced Jedi. A lot of people believe Ezra Bridger is a reflection of what Anakin Skywalker would have become had he been trained by Qui-Gon Jin, because Qui-Gon Jin is in very similar temperament as Kanan Jarrus, who is Ezra's master. I'm one of those. I believe in that theory. So in later seasons of Ezra's character, we actually see him like conspiring with Darth Maul. He can open a Sith Holocron and a Jedi Holocron, like at the same time. He's also friends with like pirates, like, so he's like a good guy who is also kind of friends with the bad guys. Like he gets it. He doesn't agree, but he's just like, yeah, I get it. I I just love everyone and I want everyone to be okay. You know, Ezra's giving pink, like he would definitely slay and he would rock a pink lightsaber, I think. I should draw that. If you guys don't know, head over my Instagram or my TikTok. I have been drawing like crazy. I'll put up some pictures here on my YouTube. There you go. Yeah, I've been drawing like crazy. So, anyways, um, as far as the pink lightsabers, also, we kind of see them um really only in two other places I read on Wikipedia. We see them in the Jedi Fallen Order game um with the saber customizations. You don't really have to do anything special to unlock it. I thought maybe that would be kind of cool, like if Calcestis went on like a side mission that involves like morality and his heart, like maybe that would make it pink. Okay, you get to have the pink lightsaber, but no, it's just like a special, you can have pink if you want. And then we also see it um in a couple episodes of The Young Jedi Adventures, which I personally have not watched. Maybe I should tell me in the comments if you guys have. But it's more of a show geared toward like little little kids. So I haven't watched it, but I'm sure it's great. Okay, moving on to red. Red lightsabers are the mark of a Sith or a Sith associate, such as like Asaj Ventress, um, who's in the Clone Wars, or Inquisitors, which are in Rebels. Um, a red lightsaber is only achieved by bleeding a kyber crystal, which is where a force user focuses their personal pain and deep-seated hatred into a crystal, ridding it of its purities. So I don't really know how to word this besides like crystals being alive and being very like pure, sentient, like wonders of the force. A Sith user to make it red has to like force all this pain onto it in a way that like basically traumatizes the crystal. And in response, that bond between the crystal and the user is is less so a partnership and more of like a master slave relationship. Like you work for me, you are my weapon, and I will do with you what I please. So that's why it's red. The crystal is in pain, the wielder is in pain, that's why it's red. Again, back to George Lucas. He just thought red would be cool because it's easier to draw and it's nice for the editing team to distinguish the bad guys. It's not that deep. But as the lore continued, red, it got very deep very quickly. So on the flip side, a user who is not affiliated with the Jedi Order, they belong to those who exist with the force. It's like a partnership with the crystal. They they don't want the crystal to feel like they owe them anything, good or bad. They have no allegiance to one organization. Um, these are the users who have white lightsabers. So exact opposite of red. They are very passive with their approach to the kyber crystal. Like it's almost like, hey, you do you, I'll do me, and like if we gotta fight, we fight. But they're not looking for combat. They're not social, like, I don't, they're not, they're not trying to find justice in every situation. Like they're just made a peaceful man making his way through the galaxy. Like, that is the white lightsaber users. Um, going along with that, the Jedi claim to be on the light side of the force, while white saber wielders tend to believe that the force shouldn't have any definitive sides, good or bad. Um, instead, they view it as kind of like a privilege to even be a user of the force at all. They value that sacred bond with the crystal and they're they're just happy to be there. They're like, you know, I'm just grateful that I have a high Metaclorian count and like I'll do what I must, but I really don't want to fight. I really don't want to get involved with any disagreements. I just think this is something kind of cool that I get to carry around with me to defend myself if I must. Those are white saber users. So, um, I actually have a couple friends in real life who I feel like would be white saber users. They they hate confrontation, they hate conflict, they're not weak, they are very strong and gentle, but they like you will never catch them having a problem with anybody. They're very lovable, they are the type of people that you just wish everyone was like. They're easy to work with, they're easy to be around. So I think if the Jedi were real, the white lightsaber users would be like the best of the best. Like if you meet someone and they open their lightsaber and it's white, I know everything I gotta know, bro. I am safe with you. Like, I can tell you anything. You will never judge me. Like, they would make the best friends, the best parents, like the white lightsaber users are where it's at. So they're the opposite of red. Moving on to a little bit more like miscellaneous territory is orange. Um, orange lightsaber colors are associated with unconventional, individualistic users, maybe like survivors of Order 66, like self-proclaimed Jedi, right? People who are like, you know what, I carry a little bit of pain, but I also don't, you know, I don't want to go there, but I I do want to fight for what's right. Like I've been wronged in the galaxy. I'm not gonna take it out on anyone, but like I'm carrying a lot of issues. So I'm traumatized and I'm gonna put that on the crystal a little bit, but like I also know it's not really anyone's fault, like it just is what it is. Those are kind of the vibes I get from orange users. We see in Jedi Fallen Order, Calchestus has um an orange saber, which I haven't played that game yet. It's on my Star Wars to-do list, among other things, and Balin Scroll. So, Balin Scroll, we meet his character for the first time in the Ahsoka live action television show. Um, and he has an orange saber. And when he sparks that thing up, that oh man, it was cool because it's almost like a copper color. And before that, we had only seen Cal Kestis use it, who is an Order 66 survivor in the game Jedi Fallen Order. I don't know a lot about his character either. Maybe I should do an episode deep dive on him. From what I've heard, that's a fantastic game with a fantastic plot, interesting characters, very intricate plot details. I would love to do more of a deep dive on orange saber specifically. I think it's a very interesting concept to be between white and red. So, lastly, as far as miscellaneous goes, we're gonna talk about the dark saber a little bit. The dark saber is a mix between kyber crystals and Beskar, which, if that sounds familiar, you probably enjoyed the Mandalorian. Beskar is a strong Mandalorian metal. So you think about Dinjarin, the Mandalorian, he has like all that reflective armor, his shiny helmet, breastplate, shoulder plates, like that's Beskar. It's very strong, it can deflect lightsaber attacks. So the dark saber was created by a Jedi who was Mandalorian, and so he kind of forged both worlds into one, like Kyber and Beskar to create the Darksaber. And it's a very significant ancient weapon, like the wielder of it is the ruler of Mandalore. You get into that with the Clone Wars a little bit, it's just a very iconic weapon, and the hilt is unique, it's very cool. Um, yeah, so hopefully we get to see more of that. I would love to see the dark saber in the Mandalorian and Grogu. That would be pretty cool. Um, so yeah, that's the Darksaber. But that's all the colors um that I wanted to talk about. I'm gonna drop a link below to a lightsaber quiz that I took and I actually got yellow. I was not trying to, I swear you guys. I was like, you know what, I'm just gonna take this as honestly as possible. And it was nice because it wasn't like a BuzzFeed quiz. Buzzfeed quizzes, like if they did, if I did a BuzzFeed lightsaber quiz, it would literally be like, what's your favorite color? Blue, yellow, red, or green. And then depending on what is your favorite flower? A yellow rose, a pink rose, a red rose, like that's Buzzfeed. This quiz was actually very well done. I'll put the link below. You guys should do it. Comment what colors you got. I think this is super fun, super interesting. It's one of the first questions I ask other fans that I meet for Star Wars. What lightsaber color would you get? I've always wanted yellow. I did get yellow. If you notice in other episodes, I like to wear this necklace. It's a yellow kyber crystal necklace. I wear it with my Ray cosplay. I love yellow. So yellow is my color. I'll share it if y'all want. Okay. But back to the actual kyber crystal. So in canon, crystals can be used for more than just lightsabers, as we discussed. We learned that actually a lot of crystals were stolen to power the laser on the death star. That like green laser that blows up Alderon. That huge weapon is powered with kyber crystals. Um like one blast, the whole planet's gone. So it shows you how powerful they are. Just one little one-inch one in a lightsaber. Crazy. So in Rogue One, which is a fantastic movie, it is my number two on my list. Um we in Rogue One, there's a prequel book called The Catalyst. I have it on my shelf. It's right here. Um, it's by James Luceno. I haven't gotten a chance to read it yet. It is on my list. I will be reading it before the year is over because it's a prequel to Rogue One, where we learn that Galen Urso, who is Jin Urso's father, was part of the Death Star, was part of the Death Star project, along with the research on kyber crystals specifically. Um, by taking them from abandoned Jedi temples, he and other scientists were of the belief that taking them wasn't disrespecting the Jedi's teachings, but actually allowing the Galactic Society to expose some of the mysterious Jedi's long-kept secrets. I'm gonna say that again. Galen Urso, along with the other scientists, believed that by taking them, the kyber crystals, from abandoned Jedi temples, he and other scientists were of the belief that it wasn't disrespecting the Jedi's teachings, but instead allowing the Galactic Society to expose some of the mysterious Jedi's long-kept secrets. Galen was not in the wrong, um, because he, of course, was unaware of the true nature of his research and Admiral Krenik's like true intentions for the use of this weapon and for the use of all the kyber crystals they were harvesting and studying. Um, but anyways, the Empire just like looted all these Jedi temples, got a bunch of these crystals, um, and that's kind of where we see it in Rogue One. There's a giant Jedi statue like laid on its side. We learn that the planet Jetta is where we meet Sagrera, and he's like kind of filling them in, like they're stealing all the kyber crystals from this giant Jedi temple. We don't know what it's for. We think it's for this big weapon, and then Galen's like holograph is like, yeah, it's for a weapon, it's massive, it's scary, and like you guys need to do something quick. Um, here's the plan. So super interesting. It was widely believed though that the first Death Star, from what I've read, only needed about eight large kyber crystals to power the Death Star laser for the first Death Star. One for each of the energy beams. One source I read though said that these kyber crystals, these eight crystals specifically, were upwards of six feet long by four feet wide by four feet high. You guys, when we're talking about rocks, do you know how heavy a rock that big is? When's the last time you saw a crystal that floated? They don't, they're massive, they're heavy. My dad was telling me about this countertop he tried to move, like with a with a couple of his buddies, and like it granted the whole thing was metal, but like or maybe it was stone, I can't remember. Regardless, he's moved a couple countertops like granite and all that massive, massive. So a crystal that big, and they needed eight of them. So some some kind kind fan did a little bit of math. Um, and one lightsaber crystal, like we mentioned, is approximately one inch. So with the crystals used to create the Death Star, he did all this math, scrolled through, got got to the end, you scrolled the answer. He wrote that you could make approximately 14 million with an M lightsabers just from the crystals that powered the first Death Star. 14 million. I don't even think we can fathom how many 14 million is. Like I was thinking about this, how many zeros there are in 14 million? Anyways, wild. Wild, wild, wild. So before we wrap this up, um, I had one crazy interesting note that I thought we could end on. And this was just crazy to me because I was uneducated. So if there's any fans listening and you're like, duh, duh, okay, I get it. I was reading this and it just blew my mind. We fast forward to the sequels. The Force Awakens. Very exciting. New big bads, new big base. The First Order, which is basically the New Empire, constructs this massive base called Starkiller. It's so massive, it's the size of one whole planet instead of the Death Star, which was more of the size of a moon. Um, and they ended up calling it Star Killer. Now, Star Killer has one laser also, except its one laser can destroy um a whole system instead of just one planet. So I was thinking like, okay, how? Keep in mind, this is basically the entire plot of The Force Awakens. I've seen this movie a few times. I really should re-watch it because the fact that this blew my mind so massively shows you how little I actually know about that movie, or at least how little things actually clicked. So Starkiller Base, massive, can destroy a huge system. It was the size of a planet because it was that planet that we talked about when we first started, Illam, the frozen planet where the younglings go and get their little crystals. The Emperor had decided that they were going to hollow out that planet. So they went, rummaged the place, took it over, established a presence, and then began construction, hollowing out Ilum, using all of its crystals, and converting the entire planet into the first order's base. So Starkiller base was the planet Ilum. And um I just would like to take a second to talk a little bit about that, especially because the blast from Starkiller Base is a red blast. Like the the laser that blasts is red. Um that is heartbreaking, especially when you think about what we talked about, what you have to do to even make a red light come from one little crystal, forcing your trauma onto them. The trauma that comes from Emperor Palpatine and the First Order, the Galactic Empire, like everything bad about the galaxy was forced onto that crystallized planet, that source of hope, new beginnings for Jedi, and that's what caused the the laser to be red. So I just had to sit with that for a second because it just made me appreciate the movie so much more and made me so excited for my next rewatch. I'm probably gonna watch it tomorrow, I'm not even gonna lie. Um, but anyways, the whole plot of that movie is how do we destroy this thing? Um, it's ending in in The Force Awakens, it ends up being destroyed by the resistance. Um, and actually, once it is destroyed, the remains of the crystal planet end up forming a small star. Which, um Yeah, that just that just kind of hit me. Like that was actually mind-blowing. I'm sorry. I just had to look this up really quick because as I was speaking, it came to mind. Um, one of the characters in Rogue One actually is famed for saying the phrase, the strongest stars have hearts of kyber. You guys, the strongest stars have hearts of kyber. And when this beautiful sacred planet with living crystals was destroyed, it formed a star. Let's all just take a moment of silence, like that. The fact that that is the whole plot of that movie, and I've seen it how many times? It just blew me away. So I'm I will be re-watching, and I hope your new rewatch is a little bit more enriched. Unless you knew that you're holding your phone, you're holding your computer scream, you're screaming duh, you're writing in the comments, you're like, duh, did you even watch the movie? I thought your favorite c I thought your favorite character was Ray. Duh. Okay, I'm sorry. Anyways, thank you so much for spending a little bit of time with me today. That's a little bit about kyber crystals. I personally learned a lot. I hope you did too, or at least enjoyed the ride. Um, and as I'm beginning to start to like to say, this is where the fun ends.
