Real Security Begins When Your Family Stands Together
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Security gear is easy to buy. Building a family that can’t be easily shaken is the hard part, and that’s what we get honest about today. We talk about why “protect what matters” has to include your marriage, your kids’ trust, your spiritual life, and the daily habits that keep a home united when pressure hits. Because if your house is already divided, it doesn’t take a criminal to destabilize it. Life will do it through stress, sickness, addiction, and exhaustion.
We’re joined by James Holland (Set Apart Farms) and Angela Holland (Herbs of the Torah), and together we connect the dots between family resilience and practical preparedness. James shares what he’s seen in veteran families and why purpose, community, prayer, and real communication matter more than most people think. We also talk about rebuilding connection through simple rituals like eating dinner together, getting off devices, and learning to fight on the same team instead of against each other.
Then we shift to optimized health as family security. Angela breaks down natural wellness beyond supplements, why chronic inflammation is at the root of so many “normal” symptoms, and how stress, sleep, hormones, food quality, and toxins stack the odds against you. We get practical with grocery shopping, label reading, cooking oils, biblical health principles, and small swaps that actually stick. We also preview our upcoming DefendFit Family Security and Optimized Health Workshop with situational awareness, home security, emergency planning, and hands-on self-defense training rooted in Krav Haganah fundamentals.

Why Protecting Family Matters
SPEAKER_01Welcome to the Living Inside Out Radio Show with John F.
SPEAKER_07Welcome back to Living Inside Out Radio where we talk about things that matter. So today's show is Protect What Matters, and it's family security, optimized health, and living inside out. So we have a great show today. Our purpose today is to promote an upcoming DeFinFit workshop focused on family security, optimized health, spiritual resilience, natural wellness, and practical preparedness. So our verse theme today, our scripture verse is Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health just as your soul prospers. And you know, I looked that up and I was like, I don't remember reading that. And it said it was in uh 3 John, uh 1st chapter, and it does. It says that same exact thing, prosper in all things and be in health just as your soul prospers. And then it continues, it says, For I've rejoiced greatly when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth. And I it says, I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. Man, that's really powerful. And when we think about that, walking in truth of your health, walking in truth of your not just your spiritual life, but walking in truth in all the seven M's of the Living Inside Out, it's just powerful. I just thought that was really cool when I went and looked it that up. So here, welcome to Living Inside Out, where we help people live from the inside out, spiritually strong, mentally sharp, physically capable, financially responsible, and prepared to protect what matters most. I'm your host, John Peak, and today we're talking about something very every family needs, but few families actively prepare for. How do we protect our families physically, spiritually, medically, and increase in an increasingly challenging world? So all these categories have their own challenges. To help us answer that question, we're joined today by James Holland from Set of Heart Farms and Angela Holland from Herbs of the Tour. So welcome, guys.
SPEAKER_04Oh, and hello to your wonderful viewers. Thank you. Thank you for having us back.
SPEAKER_07It's a great pleasure to have y'all back. I just feel like there's such great alignment with what I'm trying to do with Living Inside Out and make an impact in people's lives. And y'all already have this passion that's been running for quite some time. It's matured, you've got experience, you've been fighting battles for veterans and for family and for friends in church serving in the family of God and helping to make a difference,
Security That Goes Beyond Gear
SPEAKER_07you know, all the categories really that I talk about in the 7M. So together we'll discuss why true family security is much bigger than locks and alarms and firearms. It includes our health, our marriages, our spiritual lives, and our ability to withstand adversity. And that's what you guys have been helping to do with to set up our farms for veterans and their families, and then tying into the health with herbs of the Torah and all the experience that uh y'all bring together. So it's a really powerful thing to have y'all here and to to come alongside Living Inside Out. So today's program is brought to you by DefenFit. At DefenFit, we believe every family should be physically capable, mentally prepared, spiritually grounded, and confident in protecting those you love. You can learn more about what we do, our self-defense, our fitness, our family preparedness training programs, our firearms. So let's discuss with James this first question, James. Many people think of security only as self-defense or protecting themselves from crime. Why do you believe family security starts somewhere much deeper?
SPEAKER_04Well, when most people hear security, you said it earlier, they picture things like alarm systems and guns, cameras, locks. And all of that has its place. Um, but in in our experience, the most vulnerable families that we've seen um were taken out because it wasn't because they didn't own a firearm, right? It was it they were taken out because they were already falling apart on the inside. And so, um, you know, we said it before broken families create vulnerable communities. And so if if a family is disconnected, if you know kids don't trust their parents, uh if everyone in the house is walking on eggshells or living in separate worlds on their devices or you know, that that makes that family very easy to destabilize. And so you you know, you don't even need a criminal to do it, right? Life itself will do it through stress and and death, addiction or sickness. Uh we also said isolation creates uh weakness. Right. And so when a husband and wife are talking, when a veteran is trying to carry everything along when nobody in the family has has real community or accountability, they're like lone soldiers, right? Separated from their units. And in combat that's a good place to be. Um, you know, it at home that's how the the enemy takes off marriage, kids and and and little help. And so, you know, on the flip side, purpose is why we push purpose so hard, trying to get these family members to to uh realize what their purpose is. Purpose creates resilience. When a family knows who they are, um and what they're called to do and and who they belong to, uh, they can take hits and keep standing, right? And that's why we focus so much on families feeling together. Um and and veterans feel better when spouses and children are involved on that sideline. So when the whole house starts put uh pursuing spiritual health and things like emotional honesty and physical strength, um, you know, wise stewardship, you you see confidence and and peace come back. Right. And I tell people this all the time strong families are harder to defeat than strong individuals. So so you can train one person to fight, but if their home is a war zone, they're always going to be divided. You have to teach a family to stand together spiritually, emotionally, and physically, and and they become a problem uh for anything that tries to destroy them.
SPEAKER_07That's exactly right. The battle's multi-dimensional. Just like uh any battle, it's multidimensional from the sky, from the ground, from underneath you. Uh and man, having that uh that dynamic at home where it's unstable, it's like your foundation shaking. It's like literally, you know, building it on sand. The proverbial story about building a house on unstable soil, man, it's just gonna fall apart. But so Ecclesiastes 4.12 says, though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A court of three stand strands is not quickly broken. And that it's easy to see how together we're stronger. Even our country, United States, United We Stand, Divided We Fall. It's just in so many things in life. The culture of a company, the culture of a church, the culture of the family that brings unity or it brings division. There's really no two ways about it.
Unity Through Prayer And Communication
SPEAKER_07So James, when we think about this idea of unity and being stronger together, what are some areas that y'all discuss with the uh veterans and their families, or you know, even uh if you want to be more personal at home to be strong together, to have that unity, to and especially when it's like there's some issue you're dealing with, right? Like what we think of, oh, we have trouble. You know, trouble comes, now what? It's easy when things are going great, but what happens when things aren't going great?
SPEAKER_04Right. So so our biggest foundation on that one is prayer, right? Pray together. We pray together and uh through situations, whether they're good or bad. Um a lot some you know, some people the only time they'll pray is when there's a bad situation. You have to pray for the good things too, right? Give praise, worship. So we pray a lot together as a family, which is is is is kind of one of those chords, right? It's one of those things that helps keep us united and tight. Uh communication. If you're not communicating with each other, you know, that's why we push this a lot, and we've said this a lot on your show, being able to to openly communicate as a family with each other and not being zoned out, you know, every person in their own little part of the house and on their own little device, you know, that causes separation. And so we push that a lot. And we look at these homes, these homes that are not united, you know, everybody and you've kind of touched on it with you know um United States aren't aren't united and they never really have been that much. Um, but everybody keeps looking at the big picture of, you know, how do we reunite our United States and they're they're looking for this one person to come in and all of a sudden, you know, from the top down reunite us. Well, when the fact is that all until we can reunite our homes, we won't have united communities and we won't have united states, and we won't have, you know, united state. So we have to we have this these homes and these communities.
SPEAKER_07Right. When I think of states, I think of not just a state like a state of Texas, but the condition, right? That's another way to think of the word state is what condition are we in? Are we in a condition and what does that mean? You know, so sometimes uh I think the fundamental foundation is they don't have a faith. There is no spiritual life. And so they're operating two-dimensionally. They are still operating three-dimensionally, they just don't know it. In other words, um just because you're not pursuing uh uh creator of the universe and you're not a Christian doesn't mean there's not a spiritual dynamic in your life. It's just a spiritual darkness and and you're being getting up and even know that the source is uh demonic forces or a spiritual um ignorance, if you will. And so a lot of people are just operating uh on emotional strength, physical strength, uh, and then they're stumbling around the in the dark on the spiritual strength. When you talk to uh I'm kind of like assuming I have it in my uh pictured in my mind's eye of they come to you because they're ready to learn, they're ready to grow, they're ready for change. So are they more ready at that point by the time you get to reach out to them, are they more ready to listen to your spiritual dynamic, how you tie that in, or are you they still struggling with accepting the spiritual aspect of life?
SPEAKER_04Most are still struggling. And and honestly, I mean they're they're not ready. We've had families before where they didn't want they were like, oh no, we we want all this, but we we don't want to give off you know Jesus, we don't want to go down that road. And it's like, well, you're not you're not quite bottom yet, right? You're not you're you you're telling her at rock bottom that you're you're not there, you know. And it's like um, you know, we look at your situation and they're like, you know, it's like have you have you ever even researched the the scripture or read the Bible? Well, no, no, no, I'm not believing that. Well, maybe that's why you're in the situation that you're in, right? Have you ever thought of that? And and how about we do something different? And are you open to it? Um, you know, we've said all along with this with this journey with our farmers, we're not here to to heal or to every single family out there because it's not for every family. Um, I think you know, we pray, we pray for the time to send us the right ones and the he wants. And so that doesn't mean that every family comes to us, and you know, I'll be completely brutally honest with you. Some veterans they call us and they just want, you know, just want it's like, look, we're we're not in the midst of adopting. We're not gonna adopt you and your family. I'm not you know, I've even had veterans before have asked them what what is it they need, and they'd be like, Oh, I want a house. Well, what do you? Well, we all want a house. Everybody wants a house. That's amazing. I'm sorry, I'm not gonna give you a house. I'll help you to get a house. I'll help you to to see what that looks like. Like, how do we set you up for success to get a house? I'm not just gonna go and hustle to get a bunch of donors to buy you a home. Like, that's ridiculous. I'm not gonna adopt you and your family. You're gonna have to put the work in. So so yeah, so it's you know, sometimes we get people that are they're not ready. And uh and and we're not gonna say, Well, this is what you're gonna have to do, or just because you're struggling as a veteran, I'm gonna help you. Um, you have to be able to put the work in, right? We give you a task of things to do, and you have to be able to show us that you're willing to do those. Um, because then I know you'll be successful through the program, and I know you're gonna be successful, and we're not always gonna have to constantly uh, like I said, adopt you and just take care of you and your family. Um But for the most part, I don't know if we've had a family really come to us that have been just completely both beat in in spirituality, been a lacking of, right? Maybe they were you know when they were younger and they there was a falling of right kind of like our story.
SPEAKER_03We've had one family and they were they were just um oh yeah, okay, I mean we were able to get their their son and their family a lot of services that they need to. Shout out to Ashley and Jimmy.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So there there was one, and that was I think encouragement for us just as much as it might have been for them.
SPEAKER_04That was very refreshing. They're right.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, no, I was very you know, when people come to train with me and they already have skills, they're already an athlete, you know, and they're young and healthy, uh, they're coachable. Yeah, you know, they're right, they're intelligent. Oh man, those people are super easy to coach, you know.
SPEAKER_03Encouragement in it, yeah.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, yeah. You come across somebody that um, you know, they have physical uh limitations. I have some people that come in, like I have one customer, he's he's retired, extraordinary leader in his day, and he still is mentally and emotionally a great leader, but physically, you know, he's got titanium knees, he's uh he can hardly uh explosively move. He can move and he's powerful, he's a power lifter, but you know, he's 77, and so you know, we just work around that, meet them where they're at, meet him on the mat. But certainly uh more challenging. So we just um we make you know, we make it so everybody can train corn no matter where they're at. We meet them where they're at. And I know that's what y'all are doing with set apart farms too, and and herbs of the tour. You're meeting them where they're at, and they don't realize what you're thinking, like, oh, we got a lot of work to do, or you know, oh, this person's gonna be real easy. I mean, certainly the people that are easy, you can communicate that to them because they're further ahead. I was telling my my dad today, he wasn't here with his two boys, and I said, you know, your family's kind of an anomaly because you you've raised them and done so much of the hard work already that it's you they're both Eagle Scouts, one's at AM, the other one's you know coming up fast, and they're both they all fit me for you know 10 years. And it's super easy to see when you have somebody that's learning from a young age. They've started early on doing all the right things. And as parents, that's what we'd like to do, right? Start as young as possible, teaching them all the right things. Sometimes the problem is we are where we need to be as parents, and we have these children that come into the world and are depending on us to show them the way, and we don't have all the answers. It's not like you have a qualification. Like we take more time, you know, getting a driver's license than we do becoming parents, you know, or getting a job, you know, you have to get an education. But to become a parent, man, anybody can just stumble into the dark. And this is why we have such brokenness all around us, and families like your veteran families and and people that come to us in various uh you know venues, whether it's church or just in passing, that need the the the work that you through set apart farms and roads of the Torah and that I'm doing through Living Inside Out. So our job is to make it easy for them. And we're gonna talk a lot more about that. We're gonna get Angela talking too. I've got some great questions around health and wellness for her. So listen,

Natural Health Beyond Supplements
SPEAKER_07Welcome back, Livingston Radio. Thank you for being here today. Thank you for James and Angela being here. I really appreciate Gerald's conversation. Yes, thank you so much. This next segment is going to be talking about optimized health and how optimized health is family security. I don't think people think about that, but many people prepare for emergencies, but neglect the health that would allow them to survive an emergency. So, Angela, I have a question for you. When people hear natural health, they often think supplements. But your work focuses on much deeper than that, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. And you're right. They when they hear health, think I'm just going to take some supplements, maybe some vitamins, and then you automatically think of, you know, a cabinet full of pills and powders. And you know, supplements can be useful, but honestly, I'm not really even that big a fan of supplements. Just like a lot of things that catch on, the supplement market has caught on to the fact that a lot of people are looking for supplements because that's where they go to when they think of wellness. And so supplements, they can be good, but they also can not be good, meaning the ingredients and the types of things that are in there can be not what you need. So I'm very picky on type of supplements. And if we're just looking at supplements, then we're also just putting a band-aid on a lifestyle that's still making us sick. So it's more than about just taking one thing. So what I try to help family see is that God designed the basics to do most of the heavy lifting. And what I mean by that is food, sleep, movement, stress management, and as we talked about before, cultivating that home environment of peace that supports healing instead of constantly draining us. So this mind, body, and soul lifestyle, really. It's not one thing you take or that you do every three months. I'm gonna start counting my calories and carbs and doing this type of exercise. It's really a lifestyle and a surrender that you give over to the Lord to let him truly be your great physician and let you follow the way that he planned this life for you. So food is a form of wellness. And food, I always say on our page, you know, food is medicine. And so, you know, when we're living on ultra-processed foods and sugar and soils, which I so dislike, and additives, we're feeding inflammation and stressing the body every single day. Those things were not supposed to be, you know, daily intake. So when we shift back to simple real ingredients, right? Like meat. I do like meat, okay, and our protein, our vegetables, our fruits, our good fats, and clean water. Clean water is so important, um, especially when you know us being here in Texas, so many of the areas of water have such high chlorine. So getting that clean water, getting those filter systems, we create a foundation where the body can actually repair. So it really needs to become a lifestyle. And when we're talking about wellness, those supplements, if they're combating things, we have to look at well, why are we taking those supplements? And usually what we see in a lot of people, and you can find this through research and data and statistics, is chronic inflammation. Even in our children now, all the way up to our elders. So it's at the root of so many issues we now consider normal, right? Because we've seen it go through so many decades now. So now we hear normal joint pain is normal, fatigue is normal, brain pong is normal, mood swings, metabolic disease, and increased cancer risk. It's normal, but it's not. Um, inflammation is fueled not just by foods. For women uh my age, I'm 47. Hormones um are gonna be a huge root of inflammation. You're losing estrogen, you're losing progesterone, and that's gonna affect inflammation in your body. But we also have environmental toxins for sleep, constant stress, the food that we talked about earlier. And if we don't address those things, you know, no supplement stack is gonna fix what our daily choices keep breaking, and you're not even gonna see the full fruit of those types of supplements or vitamins or nutrition products. So, as I mentioned before, sleep and stress are huge. So, you know, families are living in a constant rush with screens on late into the night, you know, you're trying to get from this activity to that activity, this one to that obligation. The body never gets to really stand down, and your horizons your cortisol stays high, you're not really releasing it the right way. A lot of people aren't, you know, through exercise in the morning and and making sure you're doing that. Your hormones get thrown off, and the nervous system it's gonna get stuck in. survival mode and so that affects how we communicate, how patient we are with our spouse and kids, and how well we can handle crisis. And so when we talk about biblical health on herbs of the Torah, um we're talking about the principles of biblical health, you know, that kind of list we just went over of mind, body, and soul and what affects the body, what stresses out the body and the simple solutions. And so simpler living, you know, it brings us back to sanity. It's eating what God is resting as he designed. Especially when you start incorporating rest on the Sabbath and bringing that into your homes and families. It's so important for the body and he knew we needed
Inflammation Stress Sleep And Hormones
SPEAKER_03that rest. Um and then moving our bodies having that at least thirty minutes of exercise every day, you know, four to six times a week if you can depending where you're at um in your health journey and reducing unnecessary toxins and and chaos, right? So we can support that. And you have to be careful again of the supplements. But they should never replace obedience to those basic principles. Um it is not going to be just a one type of thing you can do and then see the body regenerate because it's supposed to be a mind, body and full process.
SPEAKER_04Right. And I know it gets very trendy you know like you think you can just do you know cold plunges and take Oswanda and you'll be fine. Everything's gonna be good. No. Um each individual person's gonna have their own individual journey on this so you can't just generalize it and throw them under an umbrella.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Yeah that's exactly right. No hidden hitting it or I say hitting it educating yourself to live uh a certain way and not be a fad diet or a trend uh is really the key isn't it like they they use the to explain fire how to the science of behind fire they use a triangle. So at each point of the triangle there's an element of the fire that makes it possible and that is fuel, heat and oxygen and if you take away any one of those three you won't have a fire and that's how you control fire. And it's super important to know that for firefighters because you could go to a chemical plant and it's a totally different environment to handle that fire than it would be at a home uh a wooden home for example so um I think of the training triangle that's what I call instead of the fire triangle a training triangle and that's train right eat right and sleep right so you need your rest and recovery you need your great nutrition and you need to train right. So but then I think well that's not really that's incomplete it's really about living right so call it a living triangle right because live right means it means to think right plan well have the right perspective have the right understanding but you know what that foundation of food and you know rest real sleep is super important. That's your foundation but each one of them are are linked right so you you get weak in one area it's going to affect the other two I came across a video the other day that I think is worth mentioning and there was this lady that had she was like 140 years old and they're talking to her about her life. How is it you've lived so long and you're still so vibrant your mind is so sharp you're moving around so well your weight looks in control. I mean it's just amazing what you've done here. Is there some secret and she lived in a a low income area in a country that didn't have a lot of the things that we consider the modern Western lifestyle. And so she said that when she was very young in her or I say very young in her early 20s she got very sick. Very sick. She lost 60 pounds and she was dying she could just feel that she was dying they didn't know what to do with her they didn't have an educ uh the the whole medical field like we do to run a million tests with insurance and so her great grandmother came and stayed with her and nursed her back to health with food. And she had her eat these seven foods and of course I'm like okay I want to see the list what are those seven foods it took her forever to get to the seven foods you know but eventually did and and of course I wrote them down I keep a link to the video I pass it on to people and then I had um you know I analyzed I did I did the deep dive on the science behind these seven foods and they're it's really quite amazing. I'll just tell you seven foods fermented cabbage and I get that from the Korean kimchi instead of like sauerkraut I don't really like sauerkraut but kimchi I like I like this that it's a Korean and you can get those at H E B in a little small one serving package bone broth. And so that's something you can put in your diet in various ways and they and they sell broth. Wild salmon, garlic, they say two cloves a day, greens, you know, green vegetables kale, spinach, collard, chard, walnuts, a handful of walnut and wild blueberries. So there's your seven and it really does make a difference and now I also had an inflammation angela that I was dealing with and you know as an athlete as I'm a professional athlete I'm getting paid I'm just not making millions of dollars like an NFL player but man I'm still doing all the suffering. I still have injuries I've had lots of surgeries uh and so this inflammation got to a point where I was like man I've got to do something different or I'm gonna have to stop doing this and so I I stopped the inflammation and and reduced it significantly like 90%. I was in so much pain it was hard for me to just stand up and walk. And I tried stretching and acupuncture and hydration and those all helped ballistic massage with the theragon that helped a lot my the myofacial tissue uh but it's what was the root of it and that was uh getting a better balanced diet of which the foods you just mentioned and we could just think of it simply as a Mediterranean diet diet right lean meats my family's Portuguese and so I grew up on a lot of Mediterranean style um dishes and uh the foods that you had mentioned the seven foods they're
Seven Foods That Change Everything
SPEAKER_07they're staples here and you know what's funny is your taste buds will actually begin to change and um the foods that you used to think were great some of those processed foods, sodas, sugary things once you're actually in a more biblical diet, your body will naturally start to reject that.
SPEAKER_03We have been lucky in in in taking the from the bad with our daughter where her diet needed to be um a very particular way for her healing and so she's never had a soda to this day. You know she's 12 and she's never had a lot of certain things and as she got older we said okay well you know why don't you try this baked good you know and nope she gives it right back. That tastes funny that tastes strange I don't like it. I like the food that you know you make at home because I'm not using artificial sweeteners or dyes or or um you know and things like that. And so once you you start really with healthy intake your body will naturally receive it right after the the the bad stuff so speak transitions out and you won't really want artificial food anymore.
SPEAKER_07That's right. And you only it really starts to come quite natural. In other words you don't crave those things you used to have and then when you do like okay just indulge in whatever you know that processed food that you like the most like cheesecake homemade bluebell ice cream those are my weaknesses. But you know what I feel it I can feel the inflammation flare up that even within hours I can feel the inflammation start coming in.
SPEAKER_03You know you feel heavy or tired and that energy level is really um it's not the same after eating like you know the salmon or an arugula salad or some of those other things you mentioned.
SPEAKER_07That's right. The biorhythms are all over the place. Well none of us can guarantee disease prevention but we can dramatically improve our odds by making wise decisions. So this is what the connection for Living Inside Out involves you know having the mind right and and having a faith in Christ and following the ministry callings where you start to learn why you believe what you believe and and I have a friend an atheist but he reads his the the Proverbs daily I go really and he says yeah I said because of the knowledge huh? He goes yeah there's a lot of knowledge in the proverbs I said well it's interesting if you've studied the whole Bible you'll start to learn what it says about knowledge. And so on one side my people perish for a lack of knowledge but on the other side without the Holy Spirit without knowing the creator of the universe you have knowledge but you have no power and the power comes from the Holy Spirit. So that's a healthy spirit and it involves it it affects your marriage it affects relationships it affects your ability to give back and receive so coachability so the mentoring category giving and receiving you know what you're willing to look at hear and say is a big factor and that's the media category for Living Inside Out. It it in other words there's an old country saying birds of a feather flock together who you hang out what input goes into your mind matters and oftentimes you'll end up being just like what's going into your mind. If you hang around a bad crowd you're gonna get influence like that. Now a lot of times people don't think they need martial arts for example or even to lift weights and I just think that's untrue I said if you indulge in some training in martial arts and a consistent uh intake of knowledge around that you're gonna feel much more confident just going out in the world you're gonna feel feel better because you're women my age really need weightlifting if you are 40 or over as a female you need squats you need weightlifting you need to work on your bone density and your muscles that's what's going to get you through these changes and your drop in estrogen and progesterone.
SPEAKER_03So it's more than looking good it's about sustaining your body through the upcoming years.
SPEAKER_07That's right. That's exactly right. We're more about that when we come back uh you know the the the areas that we're talking about without them the the body collapses the mind the family is all linked together and we're gonna talk about how we're gonna put that together in an upcoming

SPEAKER_02You sit down at your desk, power on your laptop and then you wait. You've got time to grab coffee check your phone maybe read the news all while your laptop slowly crawls to life loading program after program that you didn't even ask for sound familiar? Here's the fix. Clean up your startup items take control back by pressing control shift escape on your keyboard to open the task manager, click on the startup tab, and then you'll see everything that launches when your computer starts up. Right click and disable anything that you don't need immediately at startup Spotify, Adobe updaters, messaging apps, you can always open them up later. Don't worry, you're not uninstalling anything you're just telling the system to wait until you ask for it. A little cleanup can turn five minute boot time into 30 seconds. Workshop Preview Self Defense And Planning
SPEAKER_07So we have an upcoming DeFinFit workshop and we're gonna try to get Angela and James there as well to participate and to help you level up. But we're gonna do a series of workshops and so we'll have some different ways to feature different teachings but the upcoming workshop is going to pre like we started the show, protect what matters family security and optimize health. And so a workshop means you're gonna participate. So you're gonna learn yes you're gonna learn about personal security situational awareness home security vehicle safety family emergency planning but you're gonna learn some hands-on self-defense fundamentals and I think that's important because I have a simplified my Krav Haganah system and many people have heard of self-defense they've heard of you know boxing or jujitsu or you know just karate but not a lot not as many people have heard about krav magai and it's an Israeli system that's made to be very effective in a very short amount of time against empty hand gun and knife threats but I've evolved evolved and so I think my Krav Hagana system that's my system it's the evolution of Krav Maga and I've brought in just a lot of other techniques from other systems and expanded it. And so we have more time to train than a military soldier that's just got four months to train in some basic fundamentals, hand-to-hand combat, but he's blending it with other skills and tools and he's got a team but for us we could be alone and we could have somebody that needs to be protected as well. So we're gonna be taking a look at my Krav Haganov system on some great self-defense fundamentals. And then we're gonna be able to teach the children in the same class as the parents maybe even have the grandparents there. And it affects how we travel from the car to the building what I call transitional spaces. So anytime you go from a building to a car, a car to the transitional space and you're more vulnerable out in in public but we don't but sometimes we're vulnerable at home and I saw the stats on that the statistics of assaults and compromised safety and like 78% happen at the home. That's shocking. So we need to have an understanding of what it means to keep your family safe and we're going to talk about all that James you're gonna be talking about things like building stronger marriages. So say a little bit more about family resilience.
SPEAKER_04Yeah so so what I picture as as a workshop like that I like to you know kind of walk families through what it actually looks like right to build uh family resilience in in real life right not in theory um you know I'd like to talk about you know building stronger marriages by you know learning to communicate honestly right uh fight on the same team instead of uh against each other and uh obviously to bring Christ back into the center of that relationship. Right. Um I I'd I've imagined you know just addressing being able to address like healing family wounds is a big one you know by naming the patterns that keep getting repeated. You know dealing with that hidden hurt resistance. And um you know practicing uh being able to practice repentance and forgiveness and and just new habits together. I love to speak you know directly to not just veteran families realizing this is this is families all not you know not just military service members or veteran families. But being able to speak to those families about you know the unique stress of of uh of life right trauma and and systems that don't not always understand of what's going on and share just kind of ways that spouses and children can be a part of the healing process instead of feeling like you know bystanders are uh are casualties because we're seeing that throughout it's not just veteran families that are getting split up on the therapeutic process of this so you know all of we we I'd love to just focus on restoring purpose right helping veteran discover rediscover why God put 'em there uh you know and and brought them together as family and and what their family is could become and you know how a shared mission gives them the strength to endure hard these hard seasons that they're going
Healing Purpose And Spiritual Resilience
SPEAKER_04through and really leave a legacy that that outlives them.
SPEAKER_07Yeah man you know all those aspects speak volumes to me especially coming from a family that had a lot of brokenness and you know when I first you know my parents took it to church for a little while but then they moved away from the church and all kind of everything fell apart really divorce and separation all this kind of stuff and when I started investigating as a young adult spiritual dynamics I d I kind of didn't understand a lot of spiritual things that were coming at me. And so it was hard to get gain ground and gain spiritual intelligence. But there was a point where my eyes were open to what Jesus's mission is. Not was, is I mean and resurrected and so when you look at what Jesus said was his mission and I had no idea that he said just stated plainly I've come to do this but it's in the book of Isaiah and so the story goes that he went back to his hometown of Nazareth and they went to the synagogue as was tradition in that time in that time that season and he went they invited him come up to the front and read the scroll of Isaiah and he opened that scroll to what we call chapter 61 and you can read this and it ties right into healing of the family. And you can read this in Luke 418 and it says the Spirit is upon me because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor he sent me to heal the brokenhearted to proclaim liberty of the captives and recovery of sight to the blind to set at liberty those who are oppressed and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. And when he finished this they were pretty upset with him isn't this Joseph you know he isn't you know he's just a carpenter who does he think he is you know and so they basically call called him out on blasphemy because they understood he was calling himself the Son of God but it's real simple to see that Jesus comes to heal our broken heart and set us free from all kinds of bondages. It could be unforgiveness it could be from just an unwillingness to take accountability. We're living in in all kinds of problematic areas of not living in the truth is what I call it. We have to live in the truth and say just being willing to take a look at that can start the healing process. So this of course you know leads to all kinds of problems when we're in when we have strongholds and brokenness and sometimes we go after food that's bad for us or behavior or you know retribution. But I think food is something that um we can learn a lot more about and because we're being so compromised with what's available to us in the fast food market and the quick packages you know if you shop on the outer perimeter of the grocery store where you have all the fresh produce and fruits and vegetables and meats you're much better off you know than the inner aisles of the grocery
Building A Biblical Healthy Kitchen
SPEAKER_07store. But Angela talk a little bit about optimization and maybe your process of going to the grocery store and this ability to reduce inflammation naturally and creating healthier kitchens and all that goes with that. There's just so much in a workshop you could say about that.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah you know um well one of the first things we did to do that is we as you were talking about brought in the Bible um and it was really what he showed me to look at um because if you look in the Bible and you you've been able to get cover to cover you'll see that food and herbs are there throughout the entire Bible so they should be in our home too from the feast right the the the biblical feast each if if that's something you do you've ever read about you'll see that they worshipped with food. Everything had to do with the celebration of food or even when you get to Yom Kippur there was a withholding of food because it was something that was so important to Joel and his spirituality from the Shabbat which is a time of favorite food. So we're going right back to food again. And when we see healing it was done even with Hezekiah with the food pulse and there were herbs and spices that were almost look like um you know they were a type of economy. So when we compare our home to possibly what the human home Jesus's home looked like I can imagine that home being full of fresh foods and spices. And so creating that imagery within your own home is one of the first ways that we can start to implement a biblical lifestyle. So we were gonna have lots of fresh fruit and fresh vegetables and healthy meat. And so that's what why I try to do when I do our grocery shopping you know if Jesus didn't have it in his house then I try not to have it in mine. And so when you start to follow that and you're reading labels and you're looking things even for those people like myself um that have celiac and I have to follow a gluten free you're still gonna read those labels. So first you know is looking at how a biblical home in the Bible would look and then when you're trying to implement that in your own home, reading labels. You'd be surprised. You'd think it's something um you know as simple as a salad would just be a salad but then you're gonna see preservatives in there and additives and things like that so that it can last in your house Longer. Um looking at your your spices and what you're the flavor of your food, it should be natural, right? We have oregano and basil and rosemary and thyme and sage. And once again, bringing those spices out of the Bible into your kitchen and making it making food a joyous affair. And so all of those are gonna address some of the things we talked about earlier. But you know, just following that simple path is gonna naturally start to reduce the inflammation and what you cook in. Um it's really important to look simple cooking oils like avocado oil or coconut oil or you know, real butter or yeast. We're not afraid of real butter here. Um or olive oil. And again, just to be careful where you get your sources from. You want to make sure they're good quality sources. But what you cook with and and just really taking it by steps. This is what I'm making, this is what I'm cooking in, this is what I'm adding spices in. And with all of those things, you're just gonna naturally build sustainable health habits that become a lifestyle. It's not a diet you're trying out for a week, or you know, maybe you try out the biblical diet for a week, but then you realize that in order to make it really sustainable and effective, it needs to become a lifestyle. This is the way that Jesus ate. This is the food that Mary would have made Jesus, and you can really connect yourself um spiritually through food back to Jesus, and then your whole family is gonna benefit from that.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, that is so true. That it's that's a powerful way to churn knowledge is looking at the Bible for food. I mean, it's it's in there and you can research it pretty easily, especially nowadays with the internet. Uh, but many of the biblical foods are nutrient powerhouses. I mean, they're recognized today, we understand they're full of anti-inflammatories, antioxidants. Let me I got a phone call in somehow. So they're also um good for your heart and digestive system, immune benefits. I mean, it talks about uh in Deuteronomy 8.8, uh olives and olive oil used in cooking and anointing lamps and um you know, rich and healthy monosaturated fats and support to heart, brain, and joint health. I mean, on and on it goes, you know, pomegranates in Deuteronomy full of flavonoids and and uh you know anti-inflammatory, the potential anti-tumor and heart benefits, figs mentioned in Samuel, first Samuel. So grapes and mentioned again in Deuteronomy. So I I don't I like to think of what we're doing here as the bigger picture, right? Are you with me? So the bigger picture is always connecting to the truth. And so the word of God gives us a lot of truth and a lot of ways for us to wake up and smell the coffee, so to speak. And so one of the ways to do that is just simply taking in and being
Simple Habits Meals And Small Swaps
SPEAKER_07around people that have knowledge to share. And so if we if if each of you one piece of advice to every family listening today, what would that be? Like James, eat for example, do y'all eat dinner together?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, right. And that's usually my go back right there. Uh and I know I've said it on your show probably multiple times, but I I I I really beat this that you know, your first piece of advice, the first thing to start with, um, and the first thing I'm gonna tell any and every family is um, you know, start having every having every meal together. Just start eating dinner together and actually talk. Right. And it sounds it sounds too simple. Mills are are one of the the most powerful security tools you have, right? It's when you sit down at a table, the phone's away, the TV's off, and you you pray together, you eat and you talk about your day, you're rebuilding connections, right? You're training your kids to feel safe and and to open up and and to know that they're a team. And that's where you'll also notice if something is off, right? If your child is struggling or your spouse is overwhelmed, um, that's where you can reinforce values, you know, talk about safety and build trust. So families that eat together regularly are are usually more aware of going on in each other's lives, and that awareness is a huge part of protecting what matters most. So I always fall back on that being the the first piece of advice I can give.
SPEAKER_07You know, you know I'm sorry. Yeah, no, that's a good one. I love that. I I love eating and I love it with my family. Go ahead, Angela.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I was just gonna say my advice would be don't don't try to overhaul do everything um you know, as I was talking about earlier, make it make food spiritual, um, of course. Um, but really make that connection to make it joyful, nurturing, and a a connection to our Messiah. So you can really go through a spiritual food journey and really enjoy the Bible in a different sensory way if you do that. And so, you know, start simple. Just remove one unhealthy habit this week and replace it with a healthy one and use the Bible as your model because you can actually do that. The the word is living and not just for the past or for the future, it's also for right now. Um, and so you know, maybe this week you cut out a soda and you replaced it with water or herbal tea, or you know, we like pop as a type of kombucha which's really low in sugar. Um and so you can still get that same type of flavor, but without the damage that 30 grams of sugar is doing to your overall system, or maybe you turn the screens off 30 minutes earlier at night and use that time to read or pray, or maybe you you know, you watch a show in place of something that is more mainstream and modern, or you swap out one fast food meal for a simple home-cooked dinner with real ingredients that you mix together playing worship music. So small changes that are done, you know, one at a time, little by little, are consistently and far more powerful than big plans that that you can't sustain. You only plan one day at a time, and then you plan the next day. And when your children see you making shifts like choosing better food or suggesting protein as a snack, and you're having those conversations, they see you saying, you know, I need to rest today. I'm choosing rest, I'm I'm choosing connection. Then they learn that health and stewardship and and the Bible are all connected, and it's normal and it's not extreme no matter what you know you you hear going on in a lot of mainstream media sources. Having family connection and following Jesus is not extreme in all time. And so little by little those swaps are gonna add up to a family that has more energy, a stronger spiritual bond with Jesus, with one another, with the word, clearer minds, and a stronger foundation to face whatever comes, you know, and to fight the good fight with energy and joy.
SPEAKER_07Absolutely. Good stuff. You know, we could make this a two-hour show pretty easily. There's just there's just so much there, right? I mean, it's easy to do when there's such great content. There's just such uh impactful things to think about
