Good Morning Quincy WA Daily Brief – Wednesday, June 17 2026
Speaker: [00:00:00] Good morning, Quincy. Today is Wednesday, June 17th, 2026, and this is the Good Morning Quincy, Washington newscast with your daily local update for Quincy, George, Winchester, Crescent Bar, Summit Estates, and all the surrounding area. If it matters in the 9848, you'll hear it here. In the next few minutes, we'll cover today's weather, what's happening around town, school sports and activities, school, city council, police, fire, church, community, and local business news.
Whether you're heading to work or just easing into your day, we're here to help you stay connected to what's happening in our community. Grab your coffee, get ready for your day, and let's start with today's forecast. Currently about 61 here in the studio. Today, sunny with a high near 84. West winds 8 to 16 miles per hour with gusts as high as 24, [00:01:00] so a pretty basin day for wind.
Tonight, mostly clear with a low around 57 The breeze will be just like earlier in the day. So once again, pretty basin day. If you're looking for a reason to celebrate, today is National Root Beer Day. It's also National Mascot Day and National Apple Strudel Day. So, you know, sit down with your favorite mascot and have some apple strudel, I guess, whether you go to the bakery or make it yourself, and, uh, enjoy a nice mug of root beer.
Remember, you have to put the mug in the freezer and get it nice and cold and frosty, you know, the way you used to get it at the really old school A&Ws. If you're gonna do it, at least do it right And if you can't find a mascot, I'm sure you've got a friend who would sit around and eat apple strudel and drink root beer with you.
If you don't, you should make more friends, I [00:02:00] guess. I'd sit around and drink root beer and apple strudel with you, so you know, there's that. Today around town at the senior center, there's bridge at 12:30 today. For crafters, there's the Chat & Stitch at 1:00 PM. Today is the senior center's board meeting at 2:00 PM, and the lunch menu is posted on the Notes section of the Welcome to Quincy WOW website as always.
Tonight, the City of George is hosting line dancing lessons for beginners, which is offered every Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at the George Community Hall for $10 each lesson. Gather a group of friends, have a great time, learn something new. It's also $6 sushi roll day at Akins new sushi department.
I don't know if I can still call it new, but hey, I'm enjoying it. Today, whether you try out the sushi at Akins or grab a slice at Monkey Around Pizza, get teriyaki at Sushi Yaki, skip the cleanup, choose another one of our [00:03:00] fine restaurants. We challenge you to try and find something new. Try a restaurant you haven't tried yet.
The 98848 has a lot of great options for some amazing meals, so go out and try one that's new to you and continue to support local restaurants in the 98848. Everyone's been waiting. Here is your sneak peek. Today there's an open house at the new aquatic center from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. No swimming. Nope, can't play in the water yet.
However, that's coming soon. But come check things out, purchase your season pass, ask questions about swimming lessons, check out the facility rules, and see our beautiful new facility. There's gonna be free ice cream provided by WaFd Bank. Come and join the evening. Come early and check it out because later after that, come straight over to the 2026 Grant County Commissioner's District 3 candidate forum.
It's happening today in Quincy from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Port of Quincy Business & Event Center. This is your opportunity to talk [00:04:00] directly to our candidates, learn where they stand on issues, ask the questions that matter most to our community. This event will lead-- will feature both questions by the moderator and live audience participation.
But honestly, I've already done the math on this, ladies and gentlemen, and as the moderator I'm gonna leave the questions to you. I'll come with some ready. I have questions as well, but I really want your questions. So we're gonna have live questions with our audience today at the forum. This is your chance to talk to them.
The forum is presented by Welcome to Quincy WA News in partnership with the Quincy Valley Chamber of Commerce and made possible through the Port of Quincy. If you can't attend in person, we will be live streaming the entire forum on Good Morning Quincy, Washington Newscast YouTube channel. That said, if you can make it in person, I encourage you to do so.
There's something valuable about being in the room, hearing the candidates firsthand, and participating in the civic conversations that help shape our community. And our [00:05:00] county commissioners have a lot to do with your everyday life right here all across the 9848. So this is an important conversation for you to be a part of and to hear who you think will be the best candidate.
Not my choice, not my decision. This is a nonpartisan event. This is your shot to get to know these people and decide who you think is best and has earned your vote. Bring your questions, bring your neighbors, and be part of the conversation tonight at the Grant County Commissioner's Forum. It's hump day.
Some people are a little tired, some people are a little excited. You're part of the way through the week, but I know we need that morning smile, so here's your daily dad joke. What vegetable has the best kung fu? Broccoli
In upcoming events, the Quincy Valley Medical Center is excited to officially launch the [00:06:00] QBMC Health and Wellness Series, a new community education program designed to bring practical, easy-to-understand health information directly to the people of the nine eight eight four eight. These free sessions will cover real life heal- ri- life-- real-life health topics, we'll see if I can read this morning, that affect many of us every day, from back pain and diabetes to heart health, women's health, injury prevention, and more.
The first session will be tomorrow on back pain management at five thirty to seven PM in the Van Dyke Conference Room at QBMC. That's up on the second floor. This topic will be presented by Amanda Violet, DPT. Whether you're dealing with chronic pain, looking to stay healthy, or simply wanna learn more about your health, this series is for you.
It's free to attend, it's open to the community, and questions are encouraged. At Quincy Valley Medical Center, they believe that healthcare goes beyond appointments and hospital walls. It starts with education, prevention, and community connection. They hope to see you there. Tomorrow is also business after-hours for the Quincy Valley Chamber of [00:07:00] Commerce out at Pernie Gardens Lavender Farm, and the Quincy Valley Shuttle crew will be driving members who want a lift.
Go ahead and reach out to Sheriana or Heather if you want a ride. Monkey Around Pizza is hosting a bike night on Friday, June nineteenth from five thirty to nine PM. All are welcome to bring their motorcycles, show them off, enjoy some great pizza and burgers. Come join the fun and show off your bike. All riders are welcome.
Even if you don't ride a motorcycle, come on out and appreciate everybody else's bike. Just remember, the rules are like a car show. You don't touch somebody's bike without asking permission. It's just good manners. Only three days left until our second farmers market of the season. The first farmers market didn't just fly by it, literally tried to take off.
If you were there when the wind hit, then you know exactly what we mean by that. But even with the gust, people showed up and had great attitudes and big smiles, and it was a great community event, and they cannot wait to do it again this Saturday. There'll be [00:08:00] live entertainment, local makers, handmade goods, friendly faces, and s- all the small-town charm.
Bring your friends, bring your dance moves, and let's make market two even better and hopefully a little less airborne than your first event. That's this Saturday at nine AM, starting at nine AM and going through two. Sunland Estates is hosting a benefit for burn children, for the Burn Children Recovery Foundation at Sunland Estates Park on Friday, June 19th.
Music starts at 7:00 PM featuring '80s dance ro- and rock hits with DJ Ramon Havens. It's got a laser light show, and then it's also got house and EDM dance party music. On Saturday, June 20th, they'll be hosting a golf tournament to go with it, a silent auction from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, a live auctions from 7:30 to 8:30 PM, and music from Hell on Heels, Northwest premier country rock band.
So come on out and enjoy some live music, auctions, golf, all for a great cause. [00:09:00] This Saturday, Chris Daniels Winery is hosting a Father's Day Saturday pop-up event from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM with local artists, live music from The Welker Brothers, and Riverside Dogs from Sunland Estates will also be there. In church events, your summer VBS schedule looks like this so far.
Faith Community Church VBS is June 22nd through June 25th at 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. That's next week. St. Paul Lutheran Church's VBS is July 6th through 10th from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Then you can head on over to First Baptist Church's VBS at, also on the 6th through 10th, at 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Quincy Free Methodist VBS is July 13th through July 17th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.
If I'm missing one, somebody please reach out to me and let me know. If your church also has a VBS that we aren't announcing, we'll be sure and get it on the schedule to share with everybody A huge shout-out and thank you to everyone who stopped by Akin's last [00:10:00] night and helped Quincy Partnership for Youth with their survey.
This is a requirement by the state for them to complete a certain amount of surveys, and so we really appreciate everybody who took a few minutes last night and helped fill out surveys, stopped by and visit with Crystal and I as we were out there trying to get these done. Crystal will also be at the County Commissioners' forum tonight with a table, so if you're attending, you can fill out the survey there.
You can also take it online and then take snapshot of your entry and send it over to the Quincy Partnership for Youth. The number's listed on the flyer. They gotta get these done as part of their requirements, but it also helps us shape the programs and educational material that's gonna go out and help our youth as we go into the next year in helping keeping our community safe from substance abuse.

The city of Quincy is asking all residents to voluntarily adhere to a watering schedule they posted over on their website as Washington heads into its fourth year of drought.
It's posted on the city site, but essentially no watering between ten AM and seven PM. Even addresses are Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. Odd addresses are Sunday, Wednesday, Friday, with no watering on Mondays. Watering schedules do not apply to newly planted landscapes and vegetable gardens. While this is not an official ordinance, this is the city trying to proactively make sure that they're doing their part and that they don't have to [00:13:00] add any mandated ordinances because people are trying to help without it.
The city composting facility is now operating on summer addor- hours, which is Tuesday through Saturday, seven fifteen to three fifteen, with a l- lunch closure from eleven fifteen to twelve fifteen In school news, well kind of school news, Ascending Track and Field presents Jackrabbit Youth Track and Field Summer Camp.
