Good Morning Quincy WA Daily Brief – Thursday, July 2 2026

Speaker: [00:00:00] Good morning, Quincy. Today is Thursday, July 2nd, 2026, and this is the Good Morning Quincy, Washington newscast with your daily local update for Quincy, George, Winchester, Crescent Bar, Southern Estates, and all of the area. If it matters in the 9848, you'll hear it here. In the next few minutes, we'll cover today's weather, what's happening around town, school sports and activities, school, city council, police, fire, church, community, and local business news.

Whether you're heading to work or getting the kids out the door, or just easing into your day, we're here to help you stay connected to what's happening in our community. Grab your coffee, get ready for your day, and let's start with today's forecast. Currently mid-50s here at the studio. A little cooler in George, a little warmer on the river.

Cooler start to this week. Uh, it seems like all week is starting a little, little cooler this week. Today, mostly sunny with a high near [00:01:00] 80. Northwest winds five to eight miles per hour becoming light and variable. Tonight, partly cloudy with a low around 57 and some average basic, basic winds. If you're looking for a reason to celebrate, today is National Wildland Firefighter Day, and that's pretty much enough reason to celebrate.

We have some of the best wildland firefighters in the world right here in Grant County, and our fire men and women work so hard every single day to keep our community safe and make our community a better place to be, so that's enough reason to celebrate to me. Go love on our firemen. Yes, today is National Made in the USA Today, and I'm all for Made in the USA.

I love to buy American, and I love to buy local. But While National Made in the USA Day is great, go love on our firemen because they deserve it. They put themselves out there every single day. They're the ones we call when everything is going sideways. So whether you take them some donuts or cookies or some real food, [00:02:00] hey, you can cook for them.

Whatever you wanna do, show them some love and appreciation today. Buy them some coffee. Do something great for them, and love on one of our amazing firemen. Today around town, the Quincy Senior Center has an exercise class today at 1:00 PM, pinnacle 3:00 PM, and they also play Mexican Train at 6:30 PM after dinner.

I've been gone this week, and so I haven't gotten a July menu yet, but I will get on that, uh, tomorrow, and hopefully I'll have your menu for you next week. The Quincy Rotary Club will be meeting today at 12:10 PM at Jack's Restaurant as usual over at the Quincy Market. And if you're looking for something for your young person to do, right now, ages six to 12 can come learn to play pickleball.

They can come learn a whole new sport using fun, high-repetition drills and games to devoi- develop confidence and technique with a focus on safety first, using age-appropriate equipment, [00:03:00] structured warm-ups, and a positive environment. Camps run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM and run from June 30th through July 23rd and are located at Losure Park.

This camp is brought to you by the Quincy Rec Department. For questions, call 509-787-3523, extension 5, or email recreation@quincywashington.us. The Free Summer Meals Program for the school system is in full swing. Children zero to 18 can enjoy free meals this summer through their sit-in and meal pick, pickup program So only two pickups per week, except at the Quincy Rec Center.

Multiple meals at once. No need for children to be present for pickup. Each the drive-through service. The Sydney sites are Quincy City Parks and Recreation Building, June 23rd through August 8th, Monday through Friday, with breakfast at 7:30 to 8 and lunch from 11:30 to 12:15 PM. Pickup sites are Quincy Middle School or George Elementary from June 22nd through July [00:04:00] 30th.

Mondays are six meals per child, and Thursdays are eight meals per child, and pickup times are 10:30 AM through 1 PM. Today, from 12 to 4 PM at the Quincy Community Center, the Quincy Booster Club is hosting a fundraising car wash for the Quincy High School Theater program. Support our students, our stage, and our community for $10 a car.

You can't beat that, and you can't wash it yourself that easily. Think of the time you save, and support local. Go over, get your car cleaned for $10 a car. Now, I can't say for sure, this is my opinion, but if you would like to give them more than that, they'd probably let you. But it's $10 a car. Go get your car washed.

Support our local theater department. We have a great program here. The Gorge Amphitheater is hiring. If you wanna work in live music, head over to their job fair today from 12 PM to 6 PM. They got live walk-in interviews for many different positions at the amphitheater. Whether you're looking for that summer job, a part-time gig, a little extra work, whatever [00:05:00] you're digging, head over to the George Amphitheater.

I'm sorry, Gorge Amphitheater, not George Amphitheater. Head over to the Gorge Amphitheater and check out their job fair today from 12 PM to 6 PM The Quincy Public Library is proud to host the Kids Energy Learning Lab from Grant PUD. The Grant PUD needs your kids for a mission to track down energy waste.

They're calling all kid detectives to join them for a free educational energizing event. During this one-hour learning lab from 2:30 to 3:30 PM, the curious and colorful monster detectives will teach elementary age kids how energy is made, how it's used, and how they can reduce the ener- energy use. Through this interactive presentation, kids will become energy detectives and be empowered to lead their families in making wise energy use choices.

Each kid will receive an engaging activity sheet to continue their learning at home. Come join the fun, fun. Now, it's Thursday. You've almost made it through the week, [00:06:00] but I know we need that smile to start the day out right, so here's your daily dad joke. How do fish pay for groceries? With sand dollars.

I had to make a beach joke 'cause I just got back from the beach. In upcoming events, the Quincy Valley Historical Society and Museum would like to invite kids to a special children's reading time this Friday, the 3rd. They'll be celebrating our country with fun stories, laughter, and learning. Join them from @ 1:30 PM or 3:00 PM in the Heritage Barn.

Come and have a story read. It's gonna be great, and it's gonna be an opportunity to learn and smile all at the same time. Also brought to you by the Quincy Valley Historical Society and Museum, the Choppers Brass Band will be performing a free concert at the Pioneer Church July 3rd at 4:00 PM. See- so you can bring your kids at 3:00 PM, enjoy some great stories, then [00:07:00] head over and catch the Chopper Brass Band.

This well-known brass quintet will be performing some of the beloved summer favors, from like favorites, like some of the Beach Boys songs, and stuff like that. It's gonna be about a 45-minute program. It is the Pioneer Church, so seating is limited. So be sure and get there, enjoy a book, and then enjoy the band, and you can catch them playing even more stuff in George the next day.

Quincy Valley Shuttle and Tours will be running all day from Quincy to George for the Fourth of July celebration. It's $5 for seniors, $10 per trip for others, or $40 for an all-day pass for rides between Quincy and George. There's two different pickup locations in Quincy. Tax is included in the price. Leave your car here, avoid the traffic and parking, and have a great, safe 4th of July running down to an event that's gonna run all day down in George.

There's so much going on. This is a great opportunity to not have to worry about all the [00:08:00] parking. Quincy Partnership for Youth is looking for youth reps. If you're in middle school or high school and wanna make a difference in your community, need something to do for the summer, hey, join the youth representatives groups.

They've got a spot for you. Get involved, and if you're interested, call or text us at 509-797-5242 to get involved. In upcoming Fourth of July events for the America's 250th birthday, we'll try and breeze through these. I'll go a little deeper on tomorrow's show On behalf of Quincy Rodeo Club and the Quincy Cemetery District, they're calling all friends of veterans.

They're planning to put up the veterans flags for the Fourth of July at the Quincy Valley Cemetery. They'll be posting flags at 7:00 AM. Following the posting, there will be a short patriotic program and a light breakfast at the cemetery pavilion. All are invited. They'll retire flags at 5:00 PM. They now have over 300 flags.

We appreciate all the help that [00:09:00] can come. Start your Fourth of July with this terrific tradition. If you're looking for a quieter Fourth of July celebration, celebrate America's 250th birthday at Sage Cliff Resort & Spa. Lounge at the cliff-side pool party with a live DJ, savor classic American barbecue on the Fox & Quail Whiskey Bar patio, and in the evening with a live concert beneath the Washington sky.

Turn your Fourth of July celebration into a weekend escape with a relaxing spa treatment, breathtaking Columbia River Gorge views, and everything you need for a perfect summer getaway. They can't wait to celebrate with you this Independence Day. In George, for their Fourth of July celebration, they're kicking off with their annual pancake feed from 7 to 11.

That's a lot of pancakes, ladies and gentlemen. Followed by the Cherry Bomb Run, which you're gonna need after you eat all those delicious pancakes. They've got market vendors, food booths, and the annual, an- annual parade at 10:00 AM. The day also includes a patriotic program featuring Veterans Operation Creation, [00:10:00] the Choppers Brass Band, historical re-enactors, the George American History, History Museum, and then there's the serving of the world's largest cherry pie at 12:30, and that's just the first half of the day and I'm already out of breath.

The afternoon entertainment continues with children's activities. Like I said, a lot of vendors, a lot of booths, and an antique tractor show, performances by Los Vega, the Camp Crown Boys, and new this year for America's 250th anniversary, country artist Jeremy McComb and The Honky Tonk Circus headline an evening concert leading up to the fireworks show at 10:00 PM.

Uh, tickets available online for that show Crescent Bar has a whole nother program going on, starting off with their own July Fit 5K Color Run, brought to you by the Quincy Booster Club and the Quincy High School Cross Country Program. Register all the way up until 8:00 AM, and the race begins at 8:30 AM.

For more information, [00:11:00] check on Facebook. Also, the Greater Crescent Bar Association wouldn't be them without throwing a huge 4th of July bash. We all know the firework party out there is legit. This year we've got live music, community patriotism, and one of the most spectacular firework displays they've ever put on.

At 5:30 PM, Santa Poco will be opening up, followed by Dean James and The Treatment at 7:30 PM. They've got an expanded beer, expanded beer garden. They've got a massive firework show. And as our na- nation marks 250 years of freedom, independence, and opportunity, let's come together along the Columbia River to celebrate what makes America special: family, friends, community, and the freedom to gather and create memories together.

Bring your flags, your patriotic spirits, your dancing shoes, as they honor America's past and celebrate its future. This 4th of July is going to be a huge event all over the community. We have a lot of great opportunities. Be sure, be safe, whether [00:12:00] you're celebrating in George or Crescent Bar or one of the surrounding communities or some big event, or you're celebrating at home, be safe, be smart, and have a wonderful, safe 4th of July.

In church events, the 2026 summer VBS schedule is continuing, starting next week with St. Paul Lutheran Church's VBS, July 6th through July 10th, daily from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Also running July 6th through July 10th is the First Baptist Church's VBS, running from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM daily. And keep that schedule open, 'cause the following week, Quincy Free Methodist Church VBS is July 13th through the 17th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM daily.

In safety announcements, here's a few summer comfort cooling tips. You probably know, but just a reminder, 'cause sometimes the old is the best, right? Sun-facing rooms can heat [00:13:00] up really fast. We've got a big picture window on the west side of our house, and I know if I don't close the curtains by about noon, the living room becomes unbearable.

Curtains, shades, and better airflow keep those spaces more comfortable. So while we love the sunshine out here, you can exhaust your airflow pretty quickly, or your air conditioner, which leads to expensive bills pretty quickly, and you can save a lot just by closing those sun-facing windows by about noon every day.

Also, reverse your ceiling fans. Set that ceiling fan to spin counterclockwise during the summer. I have been amazed by how many people do not know that you can actually change the direction of your ceiling pan- fan. That's what the little switch up at the top is for. Don't do it while it's on. Pro tip.

I've done it. It's a bad idea. Turning it counterclockwise pushes the air downwards and creates a wind chill effect that can help the room feel cooler. It doesn't make it cooler. It does [00:14:00] make it feel cooler with the wind blowing, uh, all without changing your thermostat. Like I said, I'm always amazed at how many people don't know you can change the direction on that ceiling fan.

It's actually really valuable for summer and winter settings. So be sure and set yours if you haven't yet. I know all of us get busy. I'm not sure I've even switched mine yet from the winter settings. I've gotta check that today now I'm back from vacation Did you know that you can access the welcome2quincywa.com right from your phone?
