This one's a big one. A big one. Sad. A sad one. It's a big one. Big one. Lots of things. It's a big one because it's the season reveal. Yes. And you're about to learn about every show that we're doing next year.

By the time this episode airs, we will have had our 2027 season reveal. Season tickets will be on sale for all the great shows coming up in the year of twenty twenty seven, Patrick, and it is a great lineup, but it's really good. But um it's also it's very sad. It's a it's a sad episode. Sad episode. Why is it a sad episode, Patrick?

This is this is Pat Ball's last episode. This is my last episode of the podcast. Patrick is moving on to Greener Pastures. Greener Pastures. Patrick has a next big adventure coming up. His time at the Arts Center is coming to a close, I'm afraid. Um it's a it is a very it is a very bittersweet moment. I've been here for I've been here for almost almost three years. Yeah. Almost three full years. Um I started as a what did you call me? An intern. An intern. I started as an intern.

Have you not gotten past your internship? I'm well, I made it to a graduate assistant.

Oh, you were, that's right. You were a graduate assistant. So I started as an intern and graduating or leaving as a graduate assistant. So RJ says. Um, but I don't want people to think that the cast list is going away. No, we will still be here.

This is basically the season finale, and it's a good one. It's a great one to end on. It's a good one to end on for season one because we have a lot to talk about this episode.

But before we even get into that, with you going away, Patrick, I think it is the best place to start with this episode is for you to tell us some of your best art center of Cannon County memories and moments.

Okay. Oh, where to even begin?

So I have a lot of good memories. Um one that I have a f I have a few that stick out in particular for my time here. Um that I want to bring up is in December of 2024.

I think it was twenty. It might be no, I think it was December of 2023. When do we get the new chairs?

Uh December 2023.

I'm gonna say twenty three, yeah. And then if we're wrong, Beth. Beth or Darrell will tell us, yes. But I'm pretty positive it was December of 2023. When the Wilma Adams Theater got a major upgrade, and we got rid of its you know, 20-year-old theater seats with no lumbar support whatsoever, and we got the fancy seats that we have now. Um during the time we were getting rid of the old chairs and putting in the new ones, we had to, you know, strip the theater bare and take out all the chair platforms and basically see like strip the theater down and it's like foundation. Um and we found some really, really, really old stuff while we were doing that. Um, like old programs and props and things that were under the chair platforms. But one thing we found was a coffin. Oh. Um, do you remember this?

I was I there for the coffin? There because I was out of town and I showed up, I showed up to help install. I don't know if I was there for the stripping of the old chairs.

And it's so Which why would you do that to those poor chairs? Right. I'm sorry.

Okay. No comment. Um, but one thing we found under the the chairs was a coffin. Um and then we just left it there, and so we put it. You know, I'm doing this show called Dracula, and the coffin would be really useful right now. So it's under section B. There is actively Oh no. There is actively a full-size coffin that that can only be accessed by like taking the chairs off the platforms and then moving the platforms off of like the foundation. But there is a full-size coffin with who knows what's in it.

Um you guys didn't look in the coffin when I was.

I wasn't gonna look in it, no.

Why not? Indiana Jones would be very disappointed.

Have you ever let me tell you about a little movie called The Mummy?

That's because they read a book. Are you talking about the 1999 cinematic masterpiece, The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Wise?

And the 1999 masterpiece with that homeboy starring Brendan Frazier and Rachel Wise. Yes. There is a mummy. Right. And when you play with the dead and mess with their tombs, they come back to life.

No, they didn't no, they messing with his tomb was fine. It's they read the book of the dead, so or of the living, the big gold book.

So I was not about to take any chances, so I did not look in it, and no one else did either, and we just left it there. Um and that that that was a good memory of mine.

Um I I just want to stop you there for a second, because this is the last chance I'm gonna have to bully you on the air. We're not on the air, this is not live. The key one of your key moments of sticking out is finding potentially a dead body at work.

Yeah. Doesn't seem very happy. I have a lot of good memories. Okay. Another good memory was my first ever White Oak experience. Oh. And I had never I didn't understand how like strong the food truck game was. Oh, it's it's big food truck. Um and I started just like trying everything, and I made myself a goal to like get like a full meal from like every food truck that day. Alright. And I ate I ate so much food that Cameron started like documenting and like posting like what I had like tried and eaten that day. And by the time I like finished the day, I did the math and it was something like like 6,500 or like 7,000 calories of like food truck food that I consumed that day. Oh my god. That was a good day. That was really good. Um, another good day um was when I Beth always says that like we don't know what we're gonna be doing when we come to work until we show up. That's true. And so there was that one day I showed up and Beth was like, We got the new tree for out front. We need you to plant it. And I was in like my khaki shorts. Yes. And I was like, Okay.

I I've tried for a while to like always keep a pair of like ratty clothes around just in case. Because there was when we did Anastasia, I don't think you were around. You were around, but you weren't around. I was yeah, yeah, I was. But we rented this Anastasia set. Yeah, I was very much. Did you help me unload it into the storage unit? Not into the storage unit, but I helped build it. I was in very nice pants, very dress shoes, and a button down moving all that. It was terrible.

Yeah, the tree day was that was a good one. Yeah. Um there are more, and I'm sure Keep going! Well, I'm sure like as like this episode like because it's three years of memories. Of memories. I'm sure that like as this episode goes on, more will come to mind.

Um, but as we said, um uh the day this episode comes out, we will have revealed the 2027 season at the Art Center of Cannon County, and we're gonna go through and we're going to break down all of those shows. We're not gonna tell you who's directing. Correct. Simply because as of time of recording, we have not confirmed all the directors, but I know Beth is on top of that, waiting to hear back from a couple people. Yeah. And I could start with the first show, which is technically in 2026. It's part of our school matinee series. The first did I like block out for their first time?

Yeah. But yeah. But the first show of the 2027 season is the first show of our school matinee series, which is The Boxcar Children. Ooh. The stage play adaptation of the Boxcar Children, which I have not read a boxcar children book. Have you?

In elementary school. Yes, they're very, very, very, I actually envied the boxcar children because I thought that their life was so very cool. Yeah. Um, I was really jealous of them. It's uh I think it's just because I like trains. Uh okay, buddy.

Um, well, this is basically I have uh not read the boxcar children books, but I've read the script of the boxcar children play, and I believe it is the first adaptation of the first book of the boxcar children of the box art children running away and finding said boxcar and building their home out of it and all the shenanigans that they get up to, and it's going to be a total blast. And so RJ is is it a TYA show? It is. So it's it is just a play, which means adults can be in it. So adults can be in it, which means if you want to do a show with your child, this is one you could do with your child.

Yeah. Um a lot of uh adults don't realize that a lot of the TYA shows that we do um they can be a part of. Um really, really good.

I'm very tempted to audition for it, but I am doing this little thing called Dracula, which is right before the boxcar children, because it's very much like uh one of your favorite shows, Patrick. It's a lot like R Town, which is Thornton Wilder. Thornton Wilder's R Town, because there is a stage manager who sort of acts as the narrator and plays a whole bunch of different characters in the boxcar children.

And I'm like, that'd be really fun to play with the kids and you know, everyone else who's working on it. But alas, I don't think I knew that.

Oh, I didn't really talk about Dracula. We had auditions. Yeah, how about that? They were great. It was the hardest casting I've ever had to do. But very, very happy with who I have, and it's gonna be a great show. Okay, and we're gonna start rehearsals real soon.

Yay, I'm glad I'm glad. Um, there's a coffin if you need it. We gotta go dig it out, apparently. There's a coffin. Um, so boxcar children uh ending 2026 on a good note. Um, very good show for the whole family to come see. So definitely check it out. Um, and then that moves us into 2027. That moves us into 2027. And we are starting the year off with a big bang. Yes. Huge. Um, very, very big musical. Yes. Um Do You Wanna Do a Drumroll? Okay. Starting 2027 off with Catch Me If You Can.

Catch Me If You Can, based off, I believe he wrote a book and then it got turned into I don't know if he wrote a book, but I do know there's a very famous Steven Spielberg Leonardo DiCaprio Tom Hanks movie that it is based off.

So it is technically inspired by a true story. Um the story of Franklin Abnell Jr. Abagnell Jr. Um For those of you who don't know, um Franklin he he's still alive today. Um Franklin Abnell Jr. was a real man who through back when Pan Am was in airline, um he basically impersonated a pilot. He was a con man. He was a con man, he impersonated a pilot and stole millions of airline uh with through check fraud.

He impersonated a pilot, a doctor, a whole bunch of and uh ended up working with the FBI in uh the fraud department.

Yeah, the FBI was like you should be in jail for your whole life, but also like you're one of the most like useful tools we have to like stopping check fraud. So, how would you like to work for the FBI?

It is um a really fun show. It's I'm very excited that we're excuse me.

It's got big dance numbers, um, it's got comedy, it's got drama, it's it's got love, it's it's got everything all over the spectrum. It's got airplanes, it's got aviator glasses, doctors, it's got doctors, nurses, anything anything you could want in a big, big show. Yeah. Um it's got it.

Uh very, very, but very catchy, just upbeat fun music. Just definitely the definition of the word spectacle on stage. Yes.

Um, it is not uh it it is based off the true story in the movie, it is not a literal retelling of the movie. Oh, yeah. Um so if you're a fan of the movie, um it is slightly toned down from the movie so that some younger audience members can enjoy it. Um, but it's it's a good one. It's one of my favorites. When we got the rights for it, I was ecstatic.

It's I really love the song Don't Break the Rules. Yes. I can't remember his name, but it's the head FBI. Carl Handrady. Carl Handready, which was Tom Hanks in the movie. And Norbert Leo what's his last name? Butts?

No, he played Handready on uh on Broadway. And it is just such a fun, catchy song.

But I'm too busy to to to hone my art of singing. But after that, we have our second school matinee show of the season, and it's one I can say I am directing it because I am directing it. Yeah, yeah. And I know what it is. Would you want to do the drum roll? Okay.

Uh it's Horton Here's a Who on stage. And I don't mean this as an insult to the fine suit world of Dr. Seuss, but I am fully ready to just throw all of my stupidity and over-the-topness into Suzical. If there is a show to do that, of just ridiculous, high-energy elephants, who's the cat in the hat.

It's got your favorite Dr. Seuss characters, Horton, um, Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuz, Gertrude, the Wickersham. Yep. Jojo. Jojo.

Yeah. It's it's going to be a blast just full of color and whimsy. Color and whimsy. It's just. We'll all go to Salao. It's going to be a very, very, I think I all the things you can think when you think about Seuss. But I think I really need Suzucul the musical right after Dracula. Yeah. Because Dracula's going to be so heavy, so dark, so intense.

I think that is a good way to explain Susicul for people who don't know it. If you don't know what Susicul is and you want an idea, think of Dracula in. No, don't think of Dracula. No, no, no, no, no. Think of Dracula and then take everything you just thought about and think of the exact opposite. The exact opposite of what you just thought of in every aspect. Yes. And that's Susicol.

Oh, yes. A hundred percent. It's no blood. No blood. No blood. None. But yeah, uh, very excited to do Susical. Um it's just gonna be a just a fun laugh riot of a time. I just I can't wait to explore that world of Dr. Seuss and to sort of find the in-between the lines of the rhymes of his and what to do with people's actors' body language when they're saying some of these things. I think it's it's it's just gonna be just a little hoot and annie.

A bad year for tomatoes. This is a play written by playwright John Patrick, and it is one it's gonna be basically one of our one of the big comedies of the year. Because catch me if you can, uh, while it has very, very funny moments, uh, isn't just a straight-up comedy. It has a lot of heart and a lot of drama to it, where this is straight up laugh riot for a bad year for tomatoes.

So a lot like a lot of people probably listening to this, I have never seen this show. I have never read this show. I had never even heard about this show until we started talking about the season. Oh, yeah.

Um, RJ, do you have like I have the little synopsis for um I have started to read it because I have it at my desk. I like to be very familiar with all the shows. So when people ask, hey, RJ, a bad year for tomatoes is coming up, what's it about? I guess ready to tell them. Um so I'm about uh halfway through it, and it is very funny. It's a very implying and inference type of comedy. Yeah. Uh, which to me is even funnier because our brains take us to places that are much funnier than sometimes what's being said on stage. But A Bad Year for Tomatoes uh is a comedic play by John Patrick about a famous actress, Myra Marlowe, who retreats into the small town of Beaver Haven. Take that, as you will, uh, to escape fame and write her autobiography, but invents a wild homicidal sister to keep nosy neighbors away, leading to chaotic and funny situations. As her lies spiral out of control. So it is a very funny over-the-top farce. It was originally produced in 1975. So it's a very, very fun, very silly type of show. But yes, they're uh they're in the small town of Beaver Haven. Right. Haven for the Beavers.

I guess on the main stage? On the main stage? Probably Moon Over Buffalo, which you were in. Really? Straight up farce, yeah. Huh. I mean, we did leading ladies in the world.

But yeah, Bad Year for Tomatoes. It's also, it's sort of lamp not lampoons, but really also nails the uh small town gossip and feel. You know, and how everyone's in everyone's business. Everyone is all over the Beaver Haven business. Exciting. Yeah.

But it's very, very funny, and I can't wait to see who we get to play Myra Marlowe because it is a very, very funny character. Wonderful. And uh yeah, it'll it'll definitely be really just so funny. Good. So funny. It's something very I don't want to say different because everyone knows what a farce is, but it's it's a type of show that hasn't been on the main stage for a long time. And I think that'll be uh really exciting because the past three straight plays that we've had were Dracula and uh what was before that, the Cruce uh Mousetrap and the Crucible. So for the past three years on the main stage, it's been a cleanser. Yeah. And uh as I said, it's gonna be fun to see a comedic play back on the main stage. I'm very excited to see that one.

Me too. All right, so moving along, um the Zip last school matinee show.

Yes. Give us a drum roll. Madagascar T Y A. Talking about one I'm excited for that. That's right. Madagascar. The lion, the zebra, the hippo, and the giraffe. It's just them, right? I haven't seen the movie in a while. The four main ones. You get the king ones, too. Yep, escape uh the zoo and end up on the island of Madagascar where all sorts of hijinx occurs. And this is a musical adaptation of that show. We obviously have King Julian. King Julian, and he sings, I like to move it, move it. I like to move it, move it. It is uh it's a great way to end our school. He is in it, the penguins are all in it. Um to me, it's just a it's a great way to end the school year for teachers and kids. Just something where you can basically turn your brain off and enjoy it.

You know, it's it's if you love the movie and who doesn't who doesn't you'll love this one.

Yes, it uh definitely I know I keep saying high energy and all, but we try to do that for the school kids when they come to see it, see a lot of high energy, exciting shows that are very funny, and I can't wait to see the penguins, the march of the penguins.

They are um also I love field trip crowds. Oh they're always they're always so high energy, and whenever we do fun shows like this for shows the kids are gonna know, oh yeah, they're gonna go nuts.

It's I found having producing all these school shows, um the teachers, thankfully, I sent out a survey and basically said if it can tie into the curriculum, that's great, but just entertain us and the kids, which has opened up a whole new door of possibilities. That's why I'm really excited about this season because boxcar is definitely something they can tie into. Suzical high energy can still tie into it. And Dr. Tuesday too. A lot of schools. Absolutely, yeah. And then uh, but Madagascar is just a fun romp that will be the end of all school years, right? Yeah, it'll be uh right around the beginning of May. Good way to end it. It will be Madagascar. Yep. Just and also just a great way to kick off the summer. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Yeah, I'd like to move it, move it. I love you, King Julian.

I'm just really excited to see who gets to be those parts and what they do and how ridiculous they're gonna be. Because this is also a good movie. This is also a TYA show, which means adults, you could be in it with your kids. Or if you don't have a kid and you just want to be King Julian or the zebra, you could be it.

But um very popular fairy tale-turned musical comedy. Um, when you think of Carol Burnett in her career, i it is essentially Carol Burnett style comedy.

Oh, yeah. It's a retelling of the Princess and the P. And it is why don't I I'm gonna find it. I'm on the Wikipedia, it's gonna tell me. Um characters, characters, characters, characters. Princess Winifred! I don't know where Gertrude came from, but it's Princess Winifred, who has a great song called Shy, which is very, very funny. And uh it is It's another really good, big musical comedy, which uh yeah, it is just a hoot. Yeah. A hoot!

Give us the drum roll for that, please. Tuesdays with Maury. Now, do you know what Tuesdays with Maury is? Not a clue, RJ. Really? Well, it's based off the novel by uh Mitch Album. Okay. And it is about, I'm gonna pull up the official synopsis. Uh, so I'm not leading anyone astray. But it's very cool because we get to see um the black box, it's really been evolving. Okay. The sort of the experiment on the black box. We did Steel Magnolias, we did Leading Ladies this past year uh very successfully. Thank you to everyone who came and saw 12 Angry Jerves.

And this past year was really the first year that we experienced with a heavier drama um in the black box, I would say. Um uh just about sold out every single night. Absolutely. Um in the round in the round, which is really cool.

But the whole point of the black box was to find shows that people like, people connect to, but basically, for whatever reasons that have to do with the show, it doesn't really make sense for us business-wise to put it in the main stage. Yes. Because that's 200 seats. We want to be picking shows that are gonna sell to 200 people, we want to use the space effectively, and it's really great that the black box has been giving us uh these opportunities to put on these not necessarily niche shows, but shows that can reach a large audience and still be very, very successful.

When we started the black box series, we did not know if it was gonna stick around. Um, it was kind of a huge gamble the first year that we did it.

Um we did not know how audio. Well, I think we've also we've also done very interesting things. We started with Steel Magnolias, which is like, especially down here in the south. It's a staple. It's a staple. Everyone knows Steel Magnolias, yeah. Um and then really rolled the dice with leading ladies, which okay, it's a comedy that not a whole lot of people know, but we got a great response to it. And then, okay, let's try something heavy, let's do a drama, and everyone knows 12 Angry Jurrors, and people flock to it. So But this year we're doing Tuesdays with Maury's uh Tuesdays with Maury, which is a two-person show. So just two people in the entire show. And Tuesdays with Maury is an autobiographical story of the friendship between Mitch Album and Maury Schwartz. At the end of Maury's life, the two reconnect, swapping life stories and advice about living life to the fullest.

Small casts like that small are I love, love, love, love, love, love shows like that. Um not just from an audience standpoint, but from an actor standpoint. Yeah. Shows with small casts like that are so challenging, um, acting-wise, because typically you're on stage the entire time. Um, and what's also challenging about the black box already is the intimacy of that space. Yeah. You're so exposed and close to the audience when you work on stage.

And a lot of shows, when they have the smaller casts like that, they are very, very emotional. And being in that intimate space like the black box, you really get to connect and be with these characters. Like that was one of the coolest things about jurors is a lot of people walked out and felt like they were in that jury room because people were actors were six inches away from them on the stage. Where I think Tuesdays with Maury is gonna have that same effect. It's gonna be very, very heartwarming. Just a great way to spend nights at the theater to walk away feeling pretty good about life.

Yeah, so actors, if you are up for a challenge, I would say definitely come out to auditions for that show. Okay, now.

Bonnie and Clyde. Bonnie and Clyde. Oh, yeah. Yes, the sort of bluegrassy country musical.

Oh, it's so good.

Right, bluegrassy and country, sort of folksy, very folksy is probably the best way.

A little Appalachian, a little western. It kind of dabbles in different areas.

And it is just another interpretation of the doomed bank robbing lovers, Bonnie and Clyde. If you've seen the Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway movie, uh, you know the story. If you've seen The Highwayman on Netflix with uh Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson about hunting down Bonnie and Clyde, you know the story. But it is I know I keep using high energy, but this one is definitely high energy, excitement, heart racing, razzle-dazzle, um stellar music. Excitement.

Stellar music. Um, one of um the best displays of it's a show that requires more like acting intimacy than many shows I know of. Oh yeah. Um the music is so, so, so good. But yeah, if you you know, if you know the story of Barney and Clyde, which most people do, it is just a musical retelling from their point of view. Yeah. Um it's got bank robberies, it's got shootouts, it's got romance, it's got preachers, it's got it's got a lot when you're gonna be able to do a way to listen to it.

It's because I w the Warren Beatty Faye Dunaway movie is so great, and I've seen it a lot. There is a lot more in the musical, sort of different, sort of like perspective on Bonnie and Clyde. Yes. That is definitely not in the movie where the movie really follows them, where this is there's a lot of outside perspective on what's going on, which makes it to me that much more interesting to the situation of why these two were Yeah.

And it is it is like breaking the law. It is a pop culture retelling. Like it is it is a retelling meant for the stage and meant to sell tickets. So, like, you know, I'm not gonna sit here and claim that it's an accurate retelling. It's I don't think it is. But it and it's not, but dang, it's a cool one.

It's this sort of American myth. Yes. You know, it's part of the American history mythos of because it was the Great Depression, you know, it's the 1930s and what's going on, and they sort of became these unintentionally became these folk heroes, and then they got reinvigorated in the sixties with the movie, and just sort of this legend around them has sort of grown bigger than probably what actually happened to them.

Um the roles were originated um in 2011, I believe, by Broadway Powerhouses, Jeremy Jordan, and Laura Osnis. Yeah. Um, big, big names that you've probably heard before. Um give the cast album a listen to. It's great. Oh, it is a hundred percent. Yeah, it's fantastic. Um definitely excited for this one. And you know, typically musicals in that style do really, really well here. Um, you know, obviously it was very different, but it makes me think back to 2023 when we did Bright Star. Oh, yeah. Um, you know, very folksy bluegrassy show um that people in this area just were very attracted to because of its style. Absolutely. So I think that Bonnie and Clyde has a lot of potential to be a big, big seller for sure.

And then that moves us into the fall. I don't think we need a drum roll for this one. I just think we need to go. That was good.

The Adams Family. Oh man. The musical classic. It's uh so much fun. Morticia, Gomez, Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Lurch, all of your um creepy and kooky. They're creepy and they're kooky. Something, something spooky. The whole Adams family family on stage here at the Art Center of Cannon County, and all their wonderful macabre that uh is gonna be fun for everyone of all ages.

Playing right before Halloween, yeah, which is very appropriate.

So next October it'll be the Adams family take over the art center of Cannon County.

And I don't even think we need to even say more about that show.

Everyone's Adams family, they're creepy and they're kooky. Mysterious, mysterious and spooky.

Bring the whole family. Um, it's hilarious, but it's got heart too. Yeah. Um, and it's a good way to kick off the spooky season.

But then spooky season goes away. And it brings us to the final show. Sorry, I keep scorping my multi 27. It's okay, you're not coming back. We won't have to hear it ever again. I'm sorry, that was that was uncalled for. It's true. We'll get to that part later. Um, but it brings us to our last show, and I'm very excited because as we've established, I cannot sing or dance. Um, which means we're ending the show with another play. And we've been circling this one for a long time.

We usually don't, but I'm very excited that we're ending it on this one. Uh, it's Christmas time, and give us a drum roll, please. It's a wonderful life. Aww. It's it is one of my favorite, not just Christmas movies, but movies. The 1940s Frank Capra classic starring uh uh Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, who is thinking about throw he who finds out what life would be like if he were never born. Yep. And I just think it's a great way to kick off the holiday season, to roll right into Christmas. Um, we've talked about it for many years, and finally this uh 2027 we get to do it. And I am that one I may be looking forward to the most. Really? Um, just because I love that movie so much. I'm so excited to see it translated onto stage. It's uh it's gonna just I just have a feeling not just that one, but every single one of our shows I am beyond excited for. As long as I've been here, I think this might be my favorite season. It's a good season. It's it is a really good one. It's really good. It's each one is just not to like toot our own horn. Because we're the ones who picked it.

But each show, like, is a heavy hitter in a very, very different way. We have contemporaries, we have classics, you know, the plays are all really, really great, but all very, very they're all different from each other, but complement each other, if that makes sense. Yeah. I'm I'm definitely excited, and coming from someone who is stepping away from the art center, I now get to enjoy the season as a patron. Yeah. Which I'm completely excited for for reasons I haven't been excited for in a long time, because typically I'm on the behind the scenes of the shows. And now I get to enjoy them. You just get to enjoy them. With my very, very reasonably priced tickets. Yes.
