We Used To Just Figure It Out
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
There was a time when you left the house and no one knew where you were.
No GPS. No Uber. If your car broke down, you figured it out. If you got lost, you figured it out. If you told someone you’d meet them in front of Claire’s at 4:30, you showed up at 4:30.
Were we more capable then? Or just significantly harder to locate?
Casual mentions of: Italian cookies, calling collect, a Land Rover with no brakes, yoga, Adventures in Babysitting, and Kelly’s sudden need for a plug-in hybrid van.
We’ll figure it out.
Or not.
Three Day Cookies Debate
KellyIt's AMS on R. Does any people eat cookies? Okay. So these cookies have to sit in the fridge for three days.
KristinReally don't have to.
KellyAnd I say I don't want cookies in three days.
KristinI want cookies in the country.
KellyI want cookies now. So then I eat the dough out of the fridge for three days, and then I don't have any cookies left to bake at the end. Yeah, I would say just bake them. Do you think it's gonna be any better in three days? Do you think it's gonna change? So yeah, three-day, three-day refrigerated cookies. I mean, you can just buy cookie mix and then you can put it on. No, buying cookie mix out of one of those. One of those plastic tubes. Is that what you're talking about? No. That's gross.
KristinBut I mean, like, people do that.
KellyPeople do a lot of things.
Why The Last Recording Failed
KellyWe should also acknowledge not putting on an episode. Not that we have that many people to be accountable to.
KristinI mean, I think this is just a a lesson in moving on. Okay.
KellyWhich is what you're doing.
KristinYou're moving. Yes, I moved. That's why we didn't have an episode because I sold my house out in the middle of the dirt ball desert, and I don't live there anymore.
KellyAnd in the middle of trying to sell your house, we did try to record an episode. It was very, it was angsty.
KristinI didn't feel very angsty at the moment.
KellyIt wasn't very, it wasn't didn't go anywhere. Didn't really go anywhere.
KristinNo, I I can see that. I can see that point. Yes. I can see that we're we didn't really make a point. Yeah.
KellyNot that we're here to make a point.
KristinBut no, but I mean, like, it you have to make at least a point of like this is why you should listen to it. That was not clear.
KellyNo, okay. Anyone coming in on that episode would have been like, hmm, I don't I don't know about this.
KristinWe care enough about what we're putting out to like not just put out something, to put out something.
KellyIt wasn't good enough.
KristinYeah. Well, and that's fair.
KellyYeah. It made me cringe a little bit.
KristinYeah. It didn't feel good what we were doing. It didn't feel good.
KellySo here we are. We're back.
Defining Lost Versus Exploring
KellyOkay. Talking about lost.
KristinOkay. What about lost? Being lost. Like like being lost. Like getting lost.
KellyLost the show.
KristinPhysical lostness or like emotional lostness.
KellySure.
KristinUh-oh. I don't know. We went both ways. Yeah.
KellyIt can go anyway. Lost. Okay, what what do you want to say about it? I love being lost.
KristinLike physically or emotionally. So like now that we're going anyway, you have to preface what you're saying. I love being lost anyway.
KellyYou just love being lost. Love being lost. I and so let's start with physically. I love being physically lost in the world. And I don't think that it's a thing you can do anymore. Because you have GPS. You're never really lost. I remember going into a new city or doing a new thing or even a new neighborhood in your own city and not knowing how the heck to get anywhere, where you were, how to get home, and just wandering around and finding stuff. And then when you finally do get home, you feel like feel really good about it. And I just don't think that I have that ability to do that anymore.
KristinUh amen to that though. I don't like being lost. I don't like being lost. Why? It's troublesome. It's it's it's time consuming, it's just a time suck being lost. I don't need to be lost. You don't want to wander around and just see things? Not at all. Not at all. No, at all. How do you see things? What do you mean? I just go see things. I look up what I want to go see, and then I go see what I want to go see, and I don't understand. But how do you discover new things?
KellyGoogle. Google only puts on top what the people pay to put on top.
KristinThat's fine. Then I can read reviews about it and see if I want to go there. No, I just like I'm I'm just not a lost person. I'm a point A to point like I'm not a I don't like when I shop, I don't like digging for things either. I like to just have it right there and I want to just grab what I want and I want to go. I'm not like a wanderer. I don't wander. Like if the point is to wander, that's one thing.
KellyThe point is to wander. Not all the time. I don't want to be lost on my way to Target. I just want to get to Target.
KristinYeah, but what I'm saying though is like if if it's like, oh okay, we're on a walk and we're just walking and that's all we're doing, then that then that's fine. That's what I'm saying. I'm hungry and I want to go out to dinner and I get in my car and I'm lost now and I can't eat. That bugs me.
KellyNo, that's not what I'm saying. Like I don't like to get out of here. If you're going to go do something, you should just go do it.
KristinYes.
KellyBut there are times when just getting lost is the point.
KristinIf I'm by myself, I don't mind it.
KellyWhy why do you mind it with other people?
KristinBecause then you're lost with other people. A lot of like ideas and stuff swirling around of other people's things. When have you been lost?
SPEAKER_00Tell me a story. No, you said tell a story. This is your word. I did, uh was telling a story. Like when have I been lost?
SPEAKER_01I don't know if I've ever been lost.
SPEAKER_00Well then who can't
GPS Convenience Versus Discovery
SPEAKER_00have been either.
KristinI mean, like, I'm sure I've been lost, but you you have driven across the country with an almanac uh before GPS.
KellyAnd you didn't feel lost at all? You didn't you didn't you didn't enjoy the journey of just like being out in the middle of nowhere?
KristinI didn't say that. I did enjoy the journey of being out in the middle of nowhere. I knew where I was going. I would never felt lost at an almanac. Not even like in the middle of Nebraska.
KellyYou didn't feel lost, a little lost when we were in the middle of that snowstorm driving from wherever Minnesota to wherever, wherever.
KristinAnd we didn't feel lost. We were going south, and that's where we had to go. South.
KellyBut we didn't know where we were when we fell off the road.
KristinNo, okay. So, but to me, that's not lost though. So, like, I do know what you're saying. So, like, okay, when I was 19, my best friend Joni and I drove cross country and we drove down from Seattle and we took like um we took the coast highway all the way down. Took us like nine days to get down to Los Angeles. Um pretty but unnecessary. Um but anyway, I remember we stopped one night at like a it was like a it was a hostel on the ocean in California, but it was also like a lighthouse. It was really cool. And I remember I stopped and I we were like sitting outside, watching the ocean, whatever at night. And I remember I turned to Joni and I was like, hey, no one knows where we're at, and no one can get a hold of us. Right. But like I didn't feel lost, I was disconnected, but I didn't feel lost though. So like maybe I'm just not equating the same emotion that you're equating to it. It could be different words. Like I thought that was so cool to be like no one in the world knows where we're and you really didn't know where you were either. I was on the I could tell you on the almanac where I was. I knew where I was. It was on the ocean in California off the 101. I knew where I was. It's like right outside a big surf, maybe. I knew where I was. I could probably even point it out to you now if I had a map. But but no, like like that is a really cool feeling to be like no one, no one else knows where I am. I okay, I said I didn't like to wander, but I do like to wander when it's necessary. Like when we were in Thailand and they took us to um the night market, and we were just like we all split up, and I just wandered by myself basically through the night market.
KellySo you didn't know where you were.
KristinNo, but I didn't leave the night market either, though. That's that's okay.
KellyYou can be lost within parameters.
KristinYes, I was I I I tried to put parameters through my lostness. Yeah. I will tell you one thing though. I think one of the reasons I don't like the word lost or the the feeling of being lost is because of dad.
KellyNo, dad's wanderer. Dad is oh like doesn't want to get there.
KristinYes, that's why.
KellyOr he makes a wrong turn and then he doesn't want to correct it because he doesn't want to admit that he made a wrong turn. So we just keep turning the wrong way, and he's like, Don't you like walking, bud? And I'm like, I do, but then I'm hungry.
KristinExactly.
KellyNo, that's a different, that's a different situation.
KristinBut like I think like when you say the word lost, that's the sensation that I think of is like walking with dad to nowhere, just walking kids in wandering Sears parking lot for the car for hours until it was the only car left in the parking lot.
KellySo we had to have lost because you know you're in the Sears parking lot and you're trying to find your car.
KristinI know, but like when you but that's like that's the seizure I have in my stomach when you bring up the word lost. It's like I can't handle that feeling. Just like just get there, just find the car, just go to dinner.
KellyThat's a different situation. I'm talking about the more bloody the ability to just go out and not know where you're going and go so far that you're not quite sure how to get.
KristinYeah, no, that that I don't I don't mind. That's exploring to me. Exploring. Exploring, I like. Yes, like exploratory loss. That kind of stuff I don't mind. That's what I'm talking about. Okay, I just didn't when we started the conversation, law, like I said, when I when we think of loss, like the the sinking pit feeling of like watching dad try to find a car is what comes up for
Dad’s Wrong Turns And Dread
Kristinme, and it just is I can't handle it. But I I still think it's a choice though. You can explore now, you can turn your phone off.
KellyYou don't need to use but there's always that, like there's always the crutch of being able to turn it back on.
KristinYeah, but I don't I don't I don't know. I just I don't think any of that's bad. I think we should make more conscious choices about when and when not to use the technology that we have. Like, when do you want to explore and when do you want to have the technology help you get from point A to point B. But I think they're choices. I I don't think my choices have been taken away from me in that area.
KellyWhat I think I want to do more is I want to make the conscious choice to not know. Because this this and I'm holding my phone, because this is available at all times. I don't ever just not look at it. When Taryn and I went to London the first night we were there, we landed, we got to the hostel, and we were just like, I don't want to go sit in bed yet. It was like, I don't know, 7:30 at night or something. So we just started walking. We didn't have cell phones, not that they didn't exist. I'm not that old, but we didn't have them because we were poor. And we walked until like 1 a.m. had no clue where we were, were like crying in the middle of the road, somewhere in London, had never been there before, and found a black phone and picked it up, and it happened to call a cab, and the cab happened to come get us, and we gave it the name of the hostel, and we somehow got back, but like that whole experience of just like wandering around and then figuring it out. It's that figuring it out part that I I really like.
KristinI don't know, because like when we were in London a few years ago, I'd never been there before, and I use my phone to get onto the tube, and it told me exactly when to get off and when to get on and what train to switch to, and all that stuff. Like, I don't know, I find that comforting to me. That means I can explore more places because I'm never truly lost in the dread sense of the word. See, I don't dread lostness. You just said you were crying in the middle of the street in London when you were 19.
KellyAlso happened in Paris. I guess I was crying too, and I cried to a cab driver because I didn't have any cash and no one would take credit cards when he took me home. That sounds terrible. I got home. I know it was one of the best experiences of my entire life.
KristinYou and I have very different ideas of what the best experiences of our entire lives are. I like to be able to be like, oh, okay, I can get on here, get off there, do this, do that, oh, stop here to get a sandwich because I'm walking by, and then get on the tube, and then get off the tube, and then walk three blocks this way, and then four blocks that way, and then you know, there it is. Oh, I can wake up in the morning and like go downstairs and type in Starbucks, and like it will walk me to Starbucks. Luckily, luckily, I I did I did get an old man to help me cross the street because I looked the wrong way and almost got creamed. I didn't keep I kept forgetting the look the the correct way. He was like American, and I was like, Yeah.
KellyWell, literally anywhere else looks looks the one way. They are in the minority of looking the other way.
KristinSo like dumbfounded, but also mad that I almost got hit by a car that he thought I was American. But I don't mind the feeling of exploring and wandering and not I was like, I'm not mad about having the technology in order to do that though. Like to in order to never feel panicked. I don't like
Turning Tech On And Off By Choice
Kristinpanic.
KellyDid you ever feel panicked driving across the country?
KristinUm we should prepare this is I drove across country seven times. Well, four were by myself, and then four were completely alone, and then the other three were with people. No, I mean, did I feel sketched out at some junctures? Yeah, probably. Like northern Texas, like like the panhandle of Texas, like going through the top of there at one o'clock in the morning. Here's a tip though. Don't drive all night. Just stop before the sun goes down, get a hotel room, settle in, get some dinner. You don't have to drive all night because that's where it gets squishy. It's like the one, two in the morning, you gotta do a gas stop, and you're at a gas station, and there's like dolls hanging from nooses in the in the in the in the bathroom at the gas station, and you just you just gotta you gotta get when you gotta go, you gotta go. That's the other, that's the other tip.
KellyIt's like no one to go.
KristinYou just go. But like, no, I I never felt panicked.
KellyDo you think that that know when to go comes from growing up in Detroit? A hundred percent. Yeah, and I don't know what Detroit, we haven't been there in a long time, so I don't know if it's gotten better. But when we were growing up, you figured out when it was not appropriate for you to be in a place. Well, but I I also think, and this is not a diatribe on phones, it's not what I intended, but like I just thinking about it, I feel like you had to in the moment learn how to figure it out because there was no easy out.
KristinNo, there's no Uber, there's nobody to pick you up. There was nobody to pick up.
KellyThere was no cell phone. Maybe there was a payphone around, but if you didn't have change, you're fucked. You could call collect. Oh, call collect.
KristinYou remember that? Under collect. Come pick me up at Katie Batani's house. It's true though. I mean, but no, I mean, like, I I you you had to, I guess, to me though, that's more planning. We had to plan things more.
KellyI don't think they were planned. That's not very spontaneous. You just gotta figure your way out of them.
KristinNo, because you would have to call your friends and be like, hey, meet at the Macomb Mall at 4 30. And then everybody, you had to be there at 4 30 because there was no way to tell anybody you weren't there.
KellyWe just don't show up, but then you don't have friends, right?
KristinThat's what I mean. It's like, but like you had to plan it.
KellyAnd then you only had but you only had to say that at four o'clock. It's not like you had to plan three days in advance to meet at the mall.
KristinBut it's still a plan. I mean, whether it's a half hour. You have to do that now, too. You that you still have to plan to meet at the mall. Yeah, but what I'm saying though is like once the plan is set, whatever happens between the time you set the plan and the time you're supposed to be at the mall, you have to make it to the mall. There's no backing out.
SPEAKER_00You have to make it there.
KristinI think adventures and babies thing. It's true. You had to make it there. You had to do, you had to commit.
KellyI'm hanging up right now and I'm starting the venture.
KristinYeah. See, but wasn't that more fun? Yeah, it was. Well, and it it gave you less opportunities to back out.
KellyYeah, I back out of everything. I'm a backer outer.
KristinWe call that healing now.
KellyHealing?
KristinYeah. Cancel my plans.
KellyLike H-E-E-L or H-E-A-L. What the hell is H-E-E-L got to do about the no?
KristinH-E-A-L.
KellyLike heal.
KristinNo. Oh. Like I'm protecting my peace.
KellyHealing. I feel like backing out of all plans is not necessarily healing. I think it's not. I don't think it is either.
KristinI'm saying we call it healing now.
KellyI don't think it's healing.
The London Night Walk Story
KristinI think it's no, I think it's being wishy-washy.
KellyAn object in motion stays in motion, an object at rest stays at rest. If you cancel too many plans, people stop making plans with you. People stop making plans with you.
KristinWell, I think too that if you don't stretch the muscle of making yourself do things you don't want to do, you don't have that muscle anymore. You get weak in that area. And that's not a good area to be weak in.
KellyNo, I have been weak in that area for a while. I'm just now getting back into it. I'm still weak in that area.
KristinBut I mean, I guess you could argue too, though, that like exploring or or being lost, whatever you want to call it, is also a muscle that you have to flex to put the phone down.
KellyRight. Yes. This is this is what I'm saying. I want to put the phone down more. I want to hang up the phone after calling, collect, and like step out the door and be like, I have to get there. No matter what kind of dragons come down in my path, whatever happens between here and there, I'm getting there. Go.
KristinWell, I mean, like, okay, A, like, if you're asking me to like drive out of state and like like down the road. Like down the road. I'll tell you, it is harder in Arizona though than it was in Washington. Because Washington, you I always knew what direction I was pointing.
KellyThe mountains or the water.
KristinYeah, you're either the east and you're looking at the mountains or west and you're looking at the water. Here, I I do tend to feel like, where the hell am I? What which way do I take? But here's a grid.
KellyAnd all the streets run all the way across, I don't know, the state must be. But like it still confuses me though. But that's part of being lost. Like, think of all the cool things you found.
KristinThat one damn thing I lost in Arizona, in the suburbs of Arizona. Not not once. Not once as I was like, oh wow. There's a gas station. Didn't know that was there.
KellyWe found a really cool Italian market. Oh yeah, we're out. I don't know. I was lost. I couldn't get back there if I tried. But they had the best cookies. I wonder if they waited for three days. No, they were like all those different kinds of Italian cookies. Like so addicting. I couldn't stop eating them after I bought a bag of cookies. I love Italian cookies. Yeah, they were like those. Yeah, I love them. And then the the different color ones with the chocolate in between. Oh, I like those two. Actually, two cookies in one. Oh, they were so good. I don't know where it is. Go to Italy. Get cookies. Do they actually have Italian cookies in Italy?
KristinI'm sure that maybe they're probably just called cookies.
KellyBut we can go and get off the plane and be lost.
KristinThat's fine.
unknownOkay.
KristinAgain, though, I think it's a choice. I guess we're coming back to the idea of choices, right? You can choose to use the GPS or you can choose to find your way there. And I think I guess that's probably what we don't have enough of in life is like discipline to know when to make the choices that we want to make.
KellyIs it discipline or is it the want to just make things a little hard? Like not harder. What am I trying to say? Like I can reach for this thing and it makes it. Easier automatically. If I don't use it, I have to go the long way. And sometimes the long way has a lot of cool stuff on it. But because we have something we're constantly using that makes things easier, we'd shortcut the long way. If you have the time and you can wander, I now want to start choosing wandering.
KristinDo you feel like being able to choose a shortcut is like a dopamine hit?
KellyYes.
KristinAnd then it's so weird how it is, though. Like, I mean, I agree with you, but it's so weird that it would be a dopamine hit. But I mean, maybe it's like you do you feel like, oh, I got it right. Like I got it right and I got it, and I did it fast.
KellyLike, is that where the dopamine hit? No, I don't know. Because I've been having this problem with social media lately, too. I've been scrolling a lot, and my brain leaked out of my face. Literally leaked out of my face onto the floor, and it's been about a month and a half. I now feel bad, and I have to stop that. I need to start getting lost again in my own stuff. Like when I'm writing, when I'm drawing, when I'm doing
Pre Phone Planning And Commitment
Kellystuff for me, my brain is lost in those thoughts. It's trying to work things out. It's like it's spinning. And I've noticed the last two months it's like on vacation.
KristinI feel like sometimes we need that though. Cause like with this whole like house stuff and like buying and selling and moving and all that stuff, like I wasn't doing anything. I couldn't, like, I was scrolling. Like if I was on my phone, I would like scroll through Instagram or do nothing. Like, like literally, like I can't even name the things that I would look at on my phone or do a little like coloring app or something. Like, like like real dumb stuff. But now that that's over, my brain's like, oh, okay, I'm done now with that. Like I feel like I feel like it's okay to shut off sometimes though.
KellyBut I feel like I wasn't shutting off. I was being shut off.
KristinLike you didn't have a choice in it.
KellyNo, like I started scrolling more and more and more.
KristinYeah, but maybe it was because you were doing the other stuff. Like, like sometimes I think you reach like a limit. And then you have to just kind of like limit what I have reached. But like like you it's like the pot is full. It's like like when a pot boils over and then you have to like let it simmer back down.
SPEAKER_01I wasn't doing that.
KristinAnd then you can fill the pot back up with the thing. But what was I doing to even fill the pot back up? I don't know. I'm not you.
KellyI'm just saying, like maybe. I mean you had a house. You had a house thing, you had like a thing that was taking up a lot of brain space.
KristinWell, yeah, and that's that is aggravating.
KellyRight. Also. I didn't have that. I was just being normal human, doing normal human things. Like I didn't have anything big going on. I just got him two weeks ago. But this was going on way before the puppy. He's also made me realize that because I haven't been as much doing that since getting him, because he needs more attention. And he likes to eat my phone. I don't know what it is about my phone.
KristinHe's a puppy, he likes to eat anything.
KellyHe doesn't really sticks in my phone. Probably.
KristinHe was sent here to do the Lord's work. Uh no, okay. I mean, like, so like what what else about being lost? It's a good thing. We've established that now.
KellyI feel like I used to have more adventures and babysitting moments. And I feel like I want that more. I f I I I just don't think that's available as much anymore. Like you go out and and you don't know where you're going or what you're gonna encounter. It's it's it's you're like, I'm gonna hang up this phone right now, and in 30 minutes I have to be at the mall in front of Claire's.
SPEAKER_00How am I gonna do that?
KellyI don't know.
KristinI think you're also conflating though the point that like as you get older, you have more options, you have more control. So I don't know if it has so much to do with the the specific technology as we're just older, we live in suburbia, we don't live in a city. Like, I'll just get in my car and drive to the mall and go to glares. Like, like it's not it's not that hard anymore.
KellyLike I figured like I'm like she was babysitting, she had a car and it broke down. Then what do you do?
SPEAKER_00What do you mean? You just you call your exactly, you have a phone.
KellyBut when we didn't have these, we had to figure it out. We had to like flag down a police officer or you know, like walk to who knows where. I've walked on the side of the freeway. You've definitely walked on the side of the freeway. Tell me you haven't walked on the side of the freeway.
KristinI have not walked on the side of the freeway.
KellyWhat happened when I traded you cars that one day and the I wasn't on the freeway, thank God.
KristinYeah. You you gave me your car, an old Land Rover Discovery, that had no brakes. You had driven it to the point where the brakes, the brake, the the brakes had gone through the brake pads. There was no brakes. And you were like, hey, you like the Land Rover, right? And I was like, Yeah. And you're like, you can have it. I'll take your brand new freaking uh whatever airscape. And I was like, oh, okay, cool. Like, thanks. And then you left, and then I went to go to work and I had no brakes. I was using the e-brake to stop that beast in front of the um the police headquarters that was down there by like in Shabi Tonship, Michigan. I was like, I was like using the the freaking e-brake. And then I don't even know how I got it to a place that did the break, like a break place. And the guy was like, You're not driving this out of here. Like, you have to pay $900 and like that's it. Like, you're not, I can't let you leave. Like, there's no brakes in this car. Mom had to come pick me up, and she's like, What are you doing in your sister's car? And I was like, apparently it's my car now.
SPEAKER_05But that was an adventure.
KristinIt was not. That was not an adventure. No, I could have gone to jail or died. That's not an adventure that I want to go on.
KellySo could I don't know what her name was in Adventures and Babysitting?
KristinI don't want to be in Adventures and Babysitting.
KellyI do. I really want like to just go out and like get lost in the world.
KristinYeah, I just would rather not have it end in jail time or death.
KellyYeah, neither of those things is okay. Dad had three sayings do whatever you want, don't go to jail. Yeah, don't get arrested. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy. And ninja turtles don't live in the sewers, don't go down there. Which is a bigger metaphor for life than ninja turtles aren't real. Don't go in the sewers. Basically, don't chase rainbows. But those, if you live by those three things, life's great.
KristinYeah, until you give your little sister a car that doesn't have any freaking brakes on it. That could have been like, you know what? You you could have gone like if
Scrolling Fatigue And Dopamine Loops
KristinI would have died, that could have been manslaughter, negligent home.
KellyNo one ever would have known.
KristinMom would have protected you. Well, no, she wouldn't have known either. Just like when I pull all the Barbie heads off your Barbies. Oh my god. She thought I was like disturbed from until like five.
KellyTwo years ago.
KristinShe figured out it was me. No, I like I don't know. I like, yes, I want to I want to do it on my time though, you know?
KellyYeah, I don't ever want to just be lost. I'm not trying to be Gilligan. I'm this isn't a Gilligan skipper situation. I want Well, I feel like I want to do more. Yes, I want to do more and experience figuring it out. My brain misses just figuring it out. And maybe I just need to go out and do stuff more.
KristinI don't I I'll never be a traveler in that sense of like I'm traveling all the time. But I don't know, like if I'm at home, I would like to get out and do more stuff.
KellyBut as far as exploring you didn't like being lost in this sort of home buying experience, you don't like now looking back on it, you know if you take anything from it.
KristinNo. No, not at all. You know what I took from it? If you can buy a new house before you sell your old house, so you know where you're going. It's horrible. You're lost right now. Like, no, I don't look back on it and go, oh, like, wasn't that cool? Like when you didn't know where you were gonna freaking live. Like, no, absolutely not. No, no, no. There was a moment there where I thought I was gonna pay to inspect everybody's house in Peoria.
KellyI hate moving.
KristinYeah. Stability in where I live is just fine. There's nothing wrong with that to me anymore. That doesn't bore me.
SPEAKER_01Sucks.
KellyI love it. Process sucks. I like I like the like getting out there and figuring out what's out there and seeing the new things and then change. I love change. I love changing.
KristinI like changing my hair color or like the things that I wear. I don't need to change my house every kind of time.
KellyWhich is weird because I never change your appearance. Me. Like my the core me doesn't change, but I love changing my outside.
SPEAKER_01What are you talking about? You change stuff all the time. What do you mean where? Where have I changed? Even this room still looks the same. But you've changed yourself. When? When have I changed myself lately?
KristinYou started writing a book, you've you've gone to yoga, you're starting to, you know, um you've you've you're changing a lot. You're talking to people, you're like your whole life has changed since moving down to Arizona. I guess I really didn't think about it. Oh, I guess I moved here.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it hasn't been that long. I guess I really didn't think about it.
SPEAKER_00Like you've changed a lot. Even in the last year, you've changed a lot. I guess I really didn't think I've been on an adventure. Yeah. Oh my goodness. I'm different. Yes. Than I was. Uh-huh.
KellyI don't know why that's so because I didn't think about it. I didn't think about it. I didn't think I didn't think that.
KristinYeah, but like you you started going to the yoga based off of a uh invitation from someone that you didn't really know. Now you're friends, you've started. Um I mean, like there's there's a whole bunch of things that that you guys have changed and do now that are different. Dave's hair is long.
KellyIt's long. Curly, curly and long.
KristinTo me, those are the good types of changes. Like I said, I think when you when you get stuck in the I need a big change all the time, you just end up back at square one all the time.
KellyI will say though, about
Moving Stress And The Cost Of Change
Kellylike one of the moments recently that I have felt lost is yoga. Like when I first started going there, because it was a new studio, there wasn't many people who were going to all the classes, and I went to like the foam role class, and I was the only person that showed up, and I was like, Oh, I don't I I feel weird. Like I feel awkward, I feel weird. I don't want to be the one person that walks in there. I don't already feel awkward out walking in there and uncomfortable, kind of, because I'm not good at any of this.
KristinOh man, I would have loved it to be the only person in there.
KellyAnd so I stayed.
unknownGood.
KellyI stayed and I made myself do it. I made myself not not ghost out of it.
KristinWell, and look how much I mean you've done sound bass.
KellyI felt so good leaving there.
KristinYou have yoga teachers texting you coffee recommendations from across the state. You have I mean, like, there's a lot of things that are that that you that have come out of that one choice. Yeah, to just stay.
KellyRight, but that I mean, like that because if I would have ghosted out of that, I may not have ever gone back.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, you stayed.
KellyI stayed.
unknownYeah.
KellyI went in. I went in, even though I was uncomfortable. That was my adventure in babysitting. But I just it just doesn't feel that big. It doesn't feel like, you know, the Thor moment when he rises out of the pit at the You know, if that were to happen to you now, you would call 911.
KristinLike you're not no one, no one our age is putting up with that kind of shit. You know what I mean? Like, I want to be You know when to go now. And I would be like, I gotta go. He was a nice guy, he fixed your car. Yeah, I know, but but what I'm saying is when when it first started, it didn't start as you thinking he was a nice guy.
SPEAKER_01No, right.
KellyNo, I'm I'm not in those situations anymore. Do you know who that is?
KristinNo, who is that?
KellyThat's the guy from the NCIS, the one that mom always thought was cute. Vincent, not not Vincent D'Nafrio. Is it Vincent D'Nafrio? That is not A, that is not Vincent D'Anafrio, but yeah.
KristinNo, it's not. Was that the one that mom thought was cute? No. Oh. Hold on. Which NCIS? There's a lot of them.
KellyVincent D'Nafrio. That is not. As Dawson, Thor look alike. Hunter. Yeah. Go you, Vincent. Prove me wrong. That's fine. Should I just get a station wagon start driving? To where? Target. I don't know.
KristinNo in particular. Oh yeah. Okay. Now that I'm looking at once you see it, you see it.
KellyOnce you once you see it, you see it.
KristinYeah. Yeah.
KellyThat's who that was.
KristinBut like I'll tell you though, I almost regret not buying a minivan. What? Buying a minivan. When I was out car buying when I was out car shopping and I got the fan.
KellyThe Rose Vans are not what they used to be.
KristinOh. But why couldn't they just be what they used to be?
KellyYou know what? I honestly think for the five people that listen to this,
Yoga Discomfort As A New Adventure
Kellyif any of you have any clout at any of the big car manufacturers, bring back the van. Right? Bring back the van. But the cool van. The buzz is too kitschy, too twey. Yes. And the like Honda or Kia, yeah, whatever those are, they're they're too the other way. Whatever. They're too fingalo.
KristinThe town and country.
KellyOr like the safari van Safari van back. I want cool colors, but not Twi colors. I want big boxy. I want all the seats come out, and you can put a piece of plywood in. I want it looks like you could put a surfboard on the top, or it looks like you could stick a thousand children in the back. I want it plug-in hybrid. I want a plug-in hybrid cool van. I wanna, I wanna go. I want to go adventures in babysitting in a van, in a plug-in hybrid van.
SPEAKER_01No, but I mean You want to go on like a road trip? I would go, I would go on a road trip, yes. That's what I'm saying. Same thing. Where do you want to go?
KellyYou wanna go to LA? That's that's only six hours away. It's not really good. I mean, you want to drive, we're not tripping down the road, going to LA. Yeah to do what? To sit in the van?
SPEAKER_01What do you mean?
KellyGo furniture shopping?
KristinFurniture shopping. We can do some other things while we're in LA. We can get some good food.
KellyI always wished my name was Melrose.
SPEAKER_00We can start that if you want. Can we? Sure. Okay. No. Took a turn there, but I mean, why not? But I don't know if I would want to go further than LA. No, you don't.
KristinYeah, dude. Six hours is body in a car. Yeah, because no, the adventures in babysitting is in LA.
KellyOh, that's why you said LA. Yeah.
KristinIs it in LA? I've always thought it was in like the our our Pennsylvania. No, our adventures and babysitting, like our the adventures and babysitting moments we would have would be in LA. They're not on the road. You're not gonna get what we get on the side of the road and just more supernatural. Yeah, no, we're not hunting demons in Nebraska.
KellyHunting Wendigos in Nebraska. No, like let's just go to LA. And then drive around LA in a van at night. And go out. Why do you want to end up in jail or dead? Why does what is your why does going out to the bar people end up in jail? Where did you make that leap? I want to go out. Who didn't say go out?
SPEAKER_00You said you started off with supernatural, and then you're like, we go out at night in LA. At night. It needs to be at night.
KellyNo, in LA. Don't ever leave the house at night. I want to go out in the nighttime to the nightlife. I don't know what that's like anymore. I want to go out to a club. It's not fun.
KristinIt's not. No. Stop. Okay, but I will freaking go with you and it'll be five minutes and you'll be like, okay, cool. I'm ready to go home. I'll party.
KellyI will party. Sure. I'm gonna party.
The Dream Van And A Night In LA
KellyOkay. You're gonna party too.
KristinI'll party if you want to party. I do want to party. Can't wait to see this. But no, let's why don't we just go to LA in um December? Or we'll go in November or September or October. Whenever. We have to get a van first. Get a van tomorrow. You want me to go? I'll go. I will go. I will I will come home tomorrow with a safari van. It has to work. Who said that?
KellyBecause it has to drive. Oh, we're not getting to LA. If it's broken, we're not getting to LA.
SPEAKER_00We can get taken to a mechanic. We got Shane. Tie your hair up, Shane. Put your man bon on door.
KellyWe just need to get him a hydraulic lift. We just build some boxes around it.
SPEAKER_05Stand up, please.
