In Part 2 of this Safety Midyear Review, M. Simpson takes a closer look at Wright Brothers' jobsites and the safety culture that makes a difference every day. They reflect on what they've observed across the company, recognize the efforts of crews in the field, and discuss how teamwork, accountability, and communication contribute to a safer workplace. As the year continues, this episode serves as a reminder that every employee plays a role in building and maintaining a strong safety culture.
From the job site to the office, from lessons learned to stories worth telling, this is Talk and Grit, brought to you by Wright Brothers. Here's your host, Jared Walter.
SPEAKER_03Hey, welcome back to Talk and Grit, and this is going to be part two of our mid-year update podcast. Uh, so listen in and uh catch this part too. Uh the continued conversation uh with Mitchell Simpson, um giving us great updates on what's going on at Wright Brothers. So thank you for tuning in and listen here.
SPEAKER_01Hey, let me run through all the jobs real quick. I'm gonna try to hit all the jobs, just try to give everybody an overview of what's going on in the organization here, mid-year 2026. I'm sure I'm gonna miss something because man, we got a lot going on. Right, we got a lot going on. So let's just start talking about the industrial crowd. You know, our industrial group has so much going on. It's pretty amazing. You know, up north out of Loudoun, Robert Owens and his guys are working at Premiant. That's a cool place because you know, Wright Brothers graded that site way back whenever that was the site that Touchstone helped move the scrapers to and missed it. Wow, really that was it, huh? That was the site missed it last little bit of high school. Becoming a legendary. Yeah, that's right. So that was Tate and Lyle, and that's Premiant. They got some steel work at CMC. So CMC is the rebar company that we buy rebar from, and we're working there at their facility. That's a cool thing. They got ongoing maintenance work at lots of different places. Huber, in particular, you know, we've been at Huber for years and years and years. And then they got some future work coming up at Jenera. So, you know, they still got a lot of stuff going on. Robert and his crowd, great job with them. Down here in Charleston at the fab shop. We've we've been very, very busy in the fab shop for I'd say for the past nine to twelve months. Right now, they're working on a data center project down in Dalton. There's a data center going in Dalton, they're fabbing pop for that. Wow. So, you know, that doesn't get a whole lot of fanfare, a whole lot of people aren't hearing about that. But they're making a lot of pop for that. Yeah. And they got another job lined up with Yamaha and northern Alabama. Yamaha is doing an expansion and they're doing the fab work for that. That's gonna come out of the shop also, and then we're gonna go down there and install that pipe. Awesome. So, you know, industrial group continuing to expand their region a little bit. Going to be doing some work in northern Alabama here soon on the ground. It's pretty cool. And then just the standard day-to-day stuff. You know, we're still working at Valker. Yep. Been working at Wokker for forever. I think that Wright Brothers is stable. That's right. Wright Brothers is the longest standing company there, and you know, Valker's a real partner. Picked up some work at nip and paint. We're down there working at nip and paint. So, you know, the industrial group, the mechanical guys as a whole, union, non-union, those guys are knocking it out of the park. Appreciate what they're doing. Right. And then Grant, you know, Grant and his guys, the painting, the coating guys, they do a little bit of GC work. They're doing all sorts of stuff. They got a little job over at the Polk County Airport right now where they're doing a build-out. They're finishing that up. And then they're fixing to do a build-out for ATS down at the Pi Center, as you know, Jared. So we're gonna move our nonprofit ATS down to the Pi Center. We're gonna locate Xandra and those folks down there close to where the kids are at.
SPEAKER_03Right, centrally located.
SPEAKER_01It's a great deal. It's close to Goal Academy, it's close to what we're doing, it's close to one of the local middle schools. Right. Dead center towns. Makes a lot of sense. Makes a lot of sense. We think that's gonna be a good thing. And, you know, Grant's taking care of that and he's leading charge for us. And you know, we just finished up 7524, and one of the unsung heroes in the deal is our codings group. Look, we had a subcontractor that went belly up on us. It was supposed to paint all the sound walls, paint all the barrier, paint everything. Wow. We called Lucas and Grant, and they jumped in and look, they made it happen. That's awesome. They made it happen. If we if those guys did not show up, we'd had a problem. So shout out to all those guys that made that happen. Yeah. Group effort, group effort on that. Appreciate them doing that. That's awesome. So appreciate the industrial group, appreciate them continuing to grow and push. Asphalt side of the business, talking to Forrest about that this morning. Just some numbers for everybody to understand. 2025, he said we did about 240,000 tons of asphalt, most asphalt we've ever done, produced and laid in one year. That was 25. You got to think about that. Just kind of what all was going on then. 7524, Georgetown Road here in Cleveland, two tremendous projects, 240,000 tons off the charts great year. Talked about that before. Appreciate everybody's effort on that. But 2026, hey, look, this was supposed to be the down year, right? Really? Yeah. It was supposed to be a down year. We're not we don't have as much going on. Well, it right now it looks like we're going to do 170,000 tons. I mean, that's still going. It's still going. And, you know, credit to that whole group for continuing to hustle, yeah, find the work, bring it in. And we don't have one project that's got 150,000 tons on it this year. We don't have a job that's got 80,000 tons on it. It's a little bit here, a little bit there, and they're piecing it all together, and we're still going to have a really solid year. That's amazing. Yeah, it's it's good stuff. So, you know, on the T dot side of the business, what we got going on, you know, we paved several jobs on I-75 over the past few years. We're continuing that. We've got two jobs north of Calhoun on I-75 in McMinn County going toward Athens. In Hamilton County, we got a couple of, we got three different jobs inside Metro. We got one around St. Elmo, one at Bonnie Oaks, one at downtown 58. You know, all that's T Dot work. Got a job over in Marion County this year. So we're working as a sub over there. We're running over there and doing some work in Marion County, someplace we really don't go to. Pretty neat. Yeah. And then we got a job on East Brainerd Road, we got to do. So, you know, from the T Dot perspective, from the public work perspective, we're pretty loaded up. And then private work. Hey, we get to pave the next canes in the area.
SPEAKER_03There we go.
SPEAKER_01Big deal, right? Yep. That's what everybody wants to know about. Yep. That place is going to be backed up around the building for the first three months it's open. Yeah, it will be. So the canes here in Cleveland, they're paving it. Okay. They got several medical areas they're paving. They've got a center for sports medicine down around Tyner, they're done. There's a new medical center in Udowa. They're paving those. And then they've got a couple of subdivisions in both Bradley and Hamilton County.
SPEAKER_03So they're hustling.
SPEAKER_01They're hustling. I mean, you know, if you look at that mix of work, it's diverse. It's a lot. There's a lot of different stuff going on. And I just appreciate them continuing to hustle and make it happen. And yeah, you know, speaking of hustling, let's talk about the grading guys. You know, Chris Curtis and his crowd, same thing. They're just hustling. You know, healthcare stuff, they've had several different little healthcare projects here, there, and everywhere. You know, they worked up at Athens, they've worked at Park Ridge. I think they're trying to hustle up a job at Erlanger right now, so they got some stuff going on there. Educationally, they've done a bunch of TCAT work. We got a TCAT job going on right now. They're working at Baylor. And look, anytime UTC has a job over the past few years, they've done it. Yeah. I mean, they've been there. So we're working on a residence hall right now and we're working on Fletcher Hall. Awesome. So that's been good stuff for us. Other things that they got going, new Drury Hotel in downtown, been there working. That's kind of been a complicated deal. Michael, I know you and your guys have looked at that a lot because a lot of it is below grade, right? A lot of foundation stuff.
SPEAKER_0420, 40 feet below grade. It's an interesting job. I was out there Friday when uh you know the World Cup's going on. Spain is actually right across the street at the hotel. Yeah. A lot of traffic going through there. But but yeah, it's uh it was a muddy mess on Friday, I'll say that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean that that's been a tough job, but look, it's been a very interesting job. Yeah. Working out at the airport on the new parking garage that's going in. And then, you know, one of our big new jobs we got going, Turner's down there in Tiftonia. Once again, Wright Brothers is at Tiftonia, got a big grading job, and we're doing an Amazon distribution center down there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's a cool deal.
SPEAKER_01You know, we'll be talking more about that as we move along. That job we've kicked off over the past few weeks, and you know, we're excited about that. Appreciate that opportunity. We're working with Conlin there, a GC that we've worked with a couple times in the past, and we're excited to continue that relationship. So moving forward with grading stuff, let's talk about the contracting group. You know, Wendell and Matt and the guys, they've got as many landfills as I've ever seen. I mean, the amount of landfill work we have right now is pretty mind-boggling. So I'm just going to run through the list here. And if I miss one, you know, I'm sorry. But right now, I think we're doing landfill work in four different states.
SPEAKER_03That's awesome.
SPEAKER_01I think we're doing lot with we've got EcoSafe, White County, and Smith County in Tennessee. We've got Haywood County Landfill and Oohari Landfill in North Carolina. Uhari is all the way, it is east of Charlotte and south of Ashboro, right? Yep. Kind of in the middle of nowhere.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's middle of nowhere.
SPEAKER_01Middle of nowhere. South Carolina, you know, we jumped in and did some DOT work in South Carolina. Last year, we're continuing work in South Carolina with landfills this year, Northeast and Lee County landfills, those are around Columbia, on both sides of Columbia. And then we got a Murray County, Georgia landfill, which is great. You know, we're we're we're knocking it out of the park.
SPEAKER_03That's awesome.
SPEAKER_01So I said four states. We've got a job that we're about to start. Don't think it's started yet. We got another job down in Florida.
SPEAKER_03Really?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So we're going back to Florida.
SPEAKER_03Orlando.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Same landfill. That's awesome. An expansion down there. Is that Kevin? That's Kevin. Kevin did a great job. They loved working with him down there. Kevin and team. Shout out to you guys. You know, look, relationships matter. Look at that. They want Kevin to come back. Very cool. So that's exciting to go back down there to Florida. We can go play with the Gators again down there. And then we got two quarry projects. You know, we've worked at Signal Mountain for Signal Mountain Cement for years and years and years. We're still there. We're still working, doing whatever they need us to do. And we're working on a new Greenfield site quarry in Walker County, Georgia. We're starting that one right now. Tony Kelly's going there, finally out of Q cells. Praise the Lord. Finally out of Q cells. And we're gonna, you know, we're gonna do some big work there this year. So good stuff going on there. Excited about that. So then let's talk about North Carolina. Jeff Ball and that crowd over there. You know, we've got the job in Rutherfordton. You know, we're right here at the end of Rutherfordton. That job's going very well. We got a lot of subs coming in, trying to finish sound wall, trying to pave, trying to put the finishing touches on it. Got a whole bunch of storm grinders work on Charlotte Street. Guys are doing a great job with that. That job is going to end up being a really good-looking job at the end of the day. It's always fun to have a new location job, and hey, that's it. South Carolina bridges are finally done. Great job with that, guys. And then you got Chimney Rock to Gerton. You got all that work in there. You know, we've got multiple contracts. A lot of it's being negotiated right now. Shout out to everybody that's been working on that. The estimating team, you know, Dean and Crowd, thank you for everything you've done there. That's been a heavy lift to work through that. I know that Dean and Scott and Ethan and Tanya and Connor, all of them have had their hand in that over time. That's been a big lift to negotiate all that. Yeah. Um, you know, all that work as we're getting these work packages negotiated. It's really about to kick off. I I see it's gonna start kicking off here this fall in earnest. And then, you know, we're gonna have a couple years worth of work rebuilding 64 from Chimney Rock to Garden.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Lots of work. Yeah. Lots of work. Lots of good work. Lots of good work. Good stuff we're gonna be doing there. The job up in Boone, you know, we've got the rock cuts down, we got phase one bridge done, and we're looking at being able to turn traffic onto the first portion of the new bridge here imminently. That's awesome. So hallelujah for that. Paul Lucre, great job with that. Sean, great job with the bridge, you and Josh. And then you get to Asheville. Man, we got a lot of work going in Asheville. That's a lot of work. A lot of work. We finally broken ground on the big job, the Archer Wright Big Job Downtown Connector. Cody in the crowds, pushing that one forward. Proud of them on that. You know, we got some permit issues right there. We're waiting for some of the final permits to come in. But that job is really gonna ramp up over the next little bit, and it's gonna be amazing to everybody to see how that thing's gonna move.
SPEAKER_03It's gonna change the shape of Asheville and how that that city commutes. No doubt. No doubt. Just watching, you know, even you know, they're in the yard, you know, this past week watching the the work getting started as they're you know getting ready to pour these columns and everything like that and getting that set up. I mean, it's just uh it's an amazing process, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the the ramp up on that job, when we finally get all of the permits in place, it's gonna skyrocket. Yeah. There's gonna be work everywhere. Yeah, it's gonna be exciting. It is gonna be exciting. Yeah. I-40, you know, we've got an Archer Wright job over there on I-40 coming into Asheville on the west side. That job's going good. Working on phase one there, working on bridge, working on getting the roadways ready to do some paving, hopefully later this year. And then we'll push everything on the outside to start working on the inside.
SPEAKER_03That job on I-40, is that where they they set the tunnel caps?
SPEAKER_04Canton. That's Canton. That's another job. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's in Canton. Yeah, so let's talk Canton. So that was incredible to watch that, that whole process. First of its kind, I think, in the state.
SPEAKER_01The tunnel, yeah. They've so what you're talking about, Jared, is on I-40 in Haywood County, right, jumping further to the west past the Archer Wright job, we've got two jobs. We've got one at the interchange at Canton, and then we got one at Landfill Road. Incinerator Road.
SPEAKER_03That's the one I was at. Yep.
SPEAKER_01And incinerator road, what the DOT's done, they've done an analysis and figured out that if they get rid of these bridges, the tunnels are less maintenance. Right. So we took a bridge out and we're putting in this massive tunnel. Great pictures on social media for that. Yeah. Check it out, guys. You can see that on social media. Yeah. Huge picks.
SPEAKER_03And then those guys did a fantastic job of you know slow rolling the crane in, getting it set up and and just moving uh those caps in place. You know, just it's always amazing watching the plan unfold. Oh, yeah. Shout out to Brian Wade and all those guys because you know, they do an amazing job.
SPEAKER_01They did a great job with all that. So that's the other two jobs on 40. Then we jump down to Murphy. You know, we got the job on US 129 and Murphy, Jacob Grammar and the guys. You know, that is a traffic control job. You know, that is shifting traffic with intermittent earth workers, what it is. That's uh rough stuff right there. Well, I mean, that's really what it is. It's amazing how much you got to shift the traffic to do a little bit of work. And it is a pure jigsaw puzzle to pull it, put it all together. So shout out to those guys for what they're doing. Moving over into Tennessee, you know, we've had the interchange at Ducktown there at 64 and Highway 68. Getting close to being done with that one. Bridge is done, getting ready to pave that one. Put a bow on that one, which is awesome. That's great. Bridge over in Conna Saga, you know, the Conesaga River, Michael, not the Conesaga Creek. You know, that bridge is done. They're doing the demo on it right now. That one's fixing to be done also. Easy. Bradley County, we got two little bridges we're working on. One down next to the old racetrack, one here behind the office on old Lower River Road. Those are going well. We're gonna be setting beams on those. Cool. Center town, we got a job on Pierless Road that everybody seems to be asking about because it's front and center of the world. But we're putting in a precast box culvert there. And cool. John and the guys are doing some utility work associated with that also. Yeah. So that's been a good job. Yeah. And then, you know, in Chattanooga proper for the moment, we've kind of wound everything up for a second. It's kind of amazing because take a breather, right? Take a breather because we've had a heck of a run in Chattanooga for a long time, right? Right. And it's kind of slowed down. So Marion County, we've got a pretty big wall job in Marion County that we're doing right now. Similar type walls that you see on US 27 that we've done over the years with the drilled-in piles and then the anchors. You know, we're sitting there managing the subcontractors right now with the piles and the anchors, and we're gonna get to a point here in the next little bit where we're gonna start pouring wall facing. And it's, you know, you're gonna have another big wall like we did in downtown Chatenago. Great work. Yeah, great work. Working with our friends at Blaylock up in Blunt County, still got some bridges going there. That's gonna continue over the next year, and you know, that's been a good experience. That's one of those sections of the Alcala Highway extension around the airport, and you know, slowly but surely they continue to upgrade that infrastructure up there. Yeah, yeah. So that's been a good experience. And then we got, you know, in Tennessee, we got two interesting opportunities coming up on the T Dot side. You know, one of them is the Wilcox Boulevard Bridge and the James Robertson Parkway Bridge. You know, James Robertson's in Nashville, Wilcox is in Chattanooga. Both of those bridge projects are alternative delivery projects, and we're working with the department, working with the designers. We're negotiating the price right now, trying to make sure we get the owners what they want so we can give them a quality project. And both of those jobs will they'll start kicking off again of next year.
SPEAKER_03That's amazing opportunities.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, cool opportunities, big work. Yeah, high profile stuff, high profile stuff, high profile stuff, big work. And then finally, down in Alabama, you know, Alabama, we've had some, we've had two really good jobs this year. You know, the Mercedes job, we're putting a bow on it finally. What a great job that's been. Victor, Jose, all that crowd, knocked it out of the park. Great looking job. Yeah, super happy client. Good job, guys. And then I-65 south of Birmingham with Dunn Construction Company. Great job. Right, great job. That job continues to click on. We've got phase one done. We're now working on phase two. Awesome. And you know, we've done everything we were supposed to there. Yeah. Everything. Building a bridge over the railroad track, never easy. Fought through with the railroad to get all the submittals done, but everybody's done a great job on that.
SPEAKER_03That's the one in Kolera. That's the one in Kolera. Was there not too long ago? And you know, shout out to all those guys. Like they they keep their job site spick and span.
SPEAKER_01Super clean job. And just just they always kill it. Super clean job. Great job with that, you know. And then, you know, finally, I'd like to tell do a shout out to our little job in Gwinnett County, Georgia. It's a design build job that we have fought for forever to get utilities moved and everything. We're finally there and we're hitting that job. We're knocking it out in earnest. You know, I appreciate everybody just doing what they're doing on that one. You know, that so far that job's kind of gone off without a hitch because of what we're doing and how we've fought through all that. But, you know, it's a good example of, hey, if you plan a job and plan a job and plan a job, when you finally hit the ground, you go. Right. Right. And they're gone. So that they're gonna knock that one out and it's gonna be good. I don't think I've missed anything. That's a lot of people. Michael, Michael, have I missed any of that? Jared, have I missed any jobs? I know that was a pretty quick run through on all that. You probably know better than I would.
SPEAKER_04Well, no, I think you hit everything. That Gwinnett County job, you know, I will say on the it seems like a small job, and we don't need to take that approach. It's complicated. It's complicated. It's right in the middle of a nice little neighborhood, but but we we're doing a lot of work. And John Romines and his group from the middle of Cleveland to the 129 job over there in Murphy, those guys are constantly bouncing around as well. So I think we finished up the Cell Creek job, too, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we finished up the Cell Creek job, so the McDonald's Farms utility job.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it's it's been a good year, guys, and you know, a couple of groups that we need to give a shout out to. You know, we talk about the asphalt, we talk about all the local work. Look, that doesn't happen without the trucking group. The trucking group, shout out to them, you know, that 20 plus group of trucks, dump trucks that's running all day, every day, keeping everything more. You know, guys, thank you for that. The shop, look, guys, it's pretty amazing the lift that they've had over the past little bit, getting all the big iron going because we've gotten a bunch of triple sevens going. We've got a couple of big excavators going again. You know, it takes a minute to get that stuff going. And then just the everyday stuff. Yep. Just the everyday stuff. I mean, we've got a lot going on in the shop. Appreciate those guys doing what they're doing. Training department continues just to do excellent work. Thank you for that, guys. You know, one thing I'd like to point out to everybody, we're going to talk through kind of where we're at on goals and objectives. Look, we really need to be pushing on the LMS guys. Good content there. Please be diligent in that. Please try to knock that out. Try to get that done in a timely manner.
SPEAKER_04I'll say one thing on that. If you have safety videos that you want you think that's good content, send that stuff in. We we've got some, I think Jose or Elvin, I can't remember which one of them, sent it in. It's good content. Let's get that in their training department's hands. And it might be something we can implement in some of the LMS that makes sense, you know. Well, hands down. Yeah, get the stuff turned in if you got ideas. We're we're all not to take Jared's thunder, but we're always looking for different type of content and research and stuff and trying to make us better. So that just helps us too. So 100%. Content is king.
SPEAKER_03That nugget out there. LMS ain't gonna stop. So you gotta have more to keep keep on rolling out there.
SPEAKER_01100%. Safety crowd, Michael. You guys have done a great job supporting everybody this year. Appreciate that. And then, you know, everybody in the office, you know, the unsung heroes of keeping everything going. You guys are never front and center on everything. But, you know, the IT crowd, thank you for doing what you're doing. Estimating payables. And then my favorite people out there is payroll. You know, look, I love getting paycheck on Friday.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01You know, thank you all for taking care of that and making that happen in every day. So, guys, we got a lot of good things going this year. You know, one of the things I talked about out of the gate this year was we need to improve invest measure, improve invest measure. I think we're improving our communication. I appreciate everybody helping with that. We've really tried to do that. I think we're investing in each other, you know, from our frontline leadership to the guys in the trenches. Appreciate you guys doing that. We're going to continue to try to do more investing things. You know, Jared, you talked through some of that. And then the measurement part, you know, we we are doing the measuring. We're doing the measuring. So let's just have an honest conversation about that for a minute. You know, it's disappointing we got three recordables so far here at the middle of the year. You know, our goal, like every year, is to have zero because we want everybody to go home a little bit better than they showed up. Right. So, you know, guys, we talked about that complacency work. I'd really ask you to please work on the complacency. Let's let's try not to be complacent. Let's try to make sure that our brother and our sister that work next next to us each and every day, they go home a little bit better. Okay. So please do that. You know, our LMS completion. Look, you know, we need to learn. We need to learn a little bit. We need to grow. And we're doing really good on our LMSs, but we're not quite there yet. Okay. We are like knocking on the door of reaching the goal of 95% completion rate.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01We're at 93%. Yeah, let's get there. We're right there. Let's get there. So, those of you all that have not got your LMSs up to date, look, we're we're getting there. Okay, we're getting close. Please be the person that makes it happen for us. Yeah. Be the person that takes us over the edge. And then culturally, I just want to thank everybody that participated in the Best Christian Workplace survey. Yeah. Big deal for us to figure out where we're at culturally. You know, we did really good at that. I appreciate everybody's input. We got a 4.18 out of a 4.5.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01That's good. Yeah. That's good. We we got a good culture. We got things we can continue to work on. Yep. And I know this crowd and the heart of these people, look, guys, we can we can continue to work on that and try to do better. Right. Uh appreciate everybody's feedback on that. And well, we're gonna try to do our part to do what we needed to there. And last thing I'd like to talk about is the caring team. You know, caring team, everybody knows Kelly came on here a few podcasts ago and talked about it. Yep it's a huge thing for Wright Brothers. I would just ask you all to please one, consider donating to the caring team. And two, I would ask each and everybody to consider being a participant in the caring team board. Yeah. You get more out of that participating in that than you ever will get. And that's part of who we are. Right. Part of who we are. And we want to take care of each other. We want to go home a little bit better than the way we showed up, and you know, being safe, learning, taking care of one another with the caring team. That's part of who we are. And then absolutely at the end of the day, look, we build a lot of cool stuff, we do a lot of cool things, but at the end of the day, we want to take care of our people. Yep. We want to take care of our people. So with that, guys, I appreciate everything everybody does each and every day for this organization. We want to continue to get better, we want to improve, we want to invest, we want to measure. So just to follow up on you know what Jared has said, if you guys got things you want us to know about, things we need to talk about on the podcast, communications that we need to have on improving the company. Look, we got multiple ways to reach out to us. Big one here for the podcast is podcast at wbccci.com. Please give us that feedback. Send it in. Yeah, we want to continue to grow. We will continue to get better. And, you know, 2026, we're we're off to a great start. Couldn't do that without the team effort that we've got from everybody. Right. So appreciate everybody. Appreciate what we're doing this year.
