Last week on The Third Strand, we were introduced to the Whitaker family—a compelling example of how unity can gradually deteriorate when faith is overshadowed by self-interest and communication is replaced by conflict. As differing ambitions and personal struggles began to surface within the family business, relationships once grounded in prayer, trust, and togetherness became burdened by resentment, rivalry, and pride. The result was not only the decline of a successful enterprise, but also the painful division of a family that had once stood firmly united. This is The Third Strand.
Welcome to Echoes from the Pages Podcast. I am your host, DeAdra Nicole, author, content creator, and podcast. Last week on the Third Strand, we were introduced to the Whitaker Family, a compelling example of how unity can gradually deteriorate when faith is overshadowed by self-interest and communication is replaced by conflict. As differing ambitions and personal struggles began to surface within the family business, relationships once grounded in prayer, trust, and togetherness became burdened by resentment, rivalry, and pride. The result was not only the decline of a successful enterprise, but also the painful division of a family that had once stood firmly united. Will the family's business survive or will it fall apart? This is the third strand. You chose control over family, Lydia said coldly. Marcus walked out that day and started his own competing company. Sarah stopped speaking to all of them. Ruth, their mother, watched her family crumble. She would sit alone at the same oak table, Bible open, whispering through tears. A house divided against itself cannot stand. Mark 325. Silence and Consequences Years passed. Whitaker Timber Company struggled under the weight of internal conflict. Marcus's company succeeded financially, but left him restless. Lydia moved away, achieving success but losing connection. Sarah distanced herself completely, seeking peace far from the chaos, and Eli, the one who fought hardest to preserve the past, found himself alone in it. The table where they once prayed gathered dust, a turning back. One winter evening, Ruth fell gravely ill. The news reached each sibling, and for the first time in years they returned home. The air in the house was heavy, not just with worry, but with unspoken regret. They gathered around their mother's bed. Ruth's voice was faint but clear. You built your lives, but lost each other. No one spoke. She reached for Eli's hand, then Marcus's, then Lydia's and Sarah's, pulling them together. Do you remember what your father taught you? Tears filled Sarah's eyes. She whispered it first. As for me and my house? The others joined, voices breaking. We will serve the Lord. Ruth smiled weakly, then start living like it. Healing begins. That night, something shifted. Not instantly, not perfectly, but honestly. Eli spoke first. I was wrong. I chose control over trust. Marcus exhaled deeply. I let pride drive me away. Lydia wiped her tears. I cared more about being right than being family. Sarah simply said, I never stopped loving you. I just didn't know how to stay. Silence followed, but this time it was gentle. Be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4 thirty two. A new foundation. The business was never the same, and that was okay. They chose collaboration over control. Some stepped back, others stepped in differently. But the company was no longer their identity. Their faith was the oak table was cleaned, restored, and once again became the center of their home. And one morning, as sunlight streamed through the windows, four grown siblings sat together again. Not perfect, not without scars, but together. Eli looked around and said quietly, we almost lost everything. Sarah smiled softly, but God didn't let us. Marcus nodded. He rebuilt what we broke. Lydia added, stronger this time. They joined hands, and for the first time in years peace filled the room. Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes four twelve. And this time they understood. The end. Thanks for listening.
