What Is Painting with A Twist?

Your night out deserves more than small talk and a tab. We pull back the curtain on Painting with a Twist and share how a blank canvas, an upbeat room, and a little sip can turn even the most hesitant beginner into a proud creator. Shelby Rocker, our communications manager across the Jensen Beach, Orlando, Lake Mary, and Claremont studios, explains why the experience is joyful by design: low pressure, high encouragement, and complete freedom to make it yours.

We start with the heart of the concept—guided creativity that favors fun over perfection. Shelby breaks down how instructors demonstrate each step, then hop off stage for one‑on‑one support, from how to hold the brush to layering colors without fear. You’ll hear what the vibe feels like when you walk in, how the social energy helps you loosen up, and why Friday and Thursday nights are the perfect antidote to a long week. If you like your trees with blue leaves, we’re cheering for you.

We also explore why the format fits every kind of gathering. Private parties for birthdays and bachelorettes, team building that actually builds teams, and kids’ celebrations where mess and imagination go hand in hand—all thrive in a space that welcomes every style and skill level. Shelby shares her favorite moments as an instructor: guests of all ages, from tight‑grip first‑timers to seasoned hobbyists, smiling as they hold up a canvas they didn’t think they could make. That shared pride is what keeps people coming back.

If you’ve ever said “I’m not artistic,” this is your sign to try a night that’s about connection, courage, and color. Subscribe for more tips and stories, share this with a friend you’d bring to class, and leave a review to tell us what you would paint next.

Meet The Hosts

SPEAKER_01

I'm Chelsea Earlywine, co-host and producer here in the studio with Shelby Rocker, communications manager at Painting with a Twist. Shelby, how's your day going so far?

SPEAKER_02

It's going great. Thank you for uh asking.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I'm happy to be here with you and excited to dive in. So, really high level, Shelby.

What Painting With A Twist Is

SPEAKER_01

What is painting with a twist?

SPEAKER_02

Uh, painting with a twist is really just a one-of-a-kind fun experience where anyone, no matter what level, can come in, do a painting, bring in your friends, the more the merrier. Follow along, create a beautiful masterpiece and get a little bit of wine in there. That's what the twist is. And it's just like people talk about it is an unforgettable experience. I've never, you know, been to something like that. I never thought I could do something like that. And it is so easy to follow along with our instructors.

How It Differs From Art Class

SPEAKER_01

So tell me, Shelby, what makes this experience different from a traditional art class?

SPEAKER_02

Uh, traditional art class really focus on getting something that's at a professional level, like, uh, we need to erase that, do it that way. But painting with a twist is a much more chill baseline. We're not here to create something to enter in contest or have all that pressure of being perfect. We embrace all uniqueness. If you want to paint a tree that has green uh leaves, yeah, that's what we're doing. If you get blue paint and start painting blue leaves, we're gonna be like, that's great too. We want everyone to go home with something completely unique. Because art class put a lot of pressure on, you know, making sure everything's perfect. We want to be very opposite of that.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, okay, low pressure and a little more fun. So, how would you describe the atmosphere that guests can expect when they walk into the studio for the first time?

Studio Atmosphere And Vibe

SPEAKER_02

It's almost just you walk in and we have our instructor already welcoming people in. There might be people sitting, chatting. Some of our locations have a little bar, so before you sit down, you can go in, order a drink, sit down, even talk with new people. We have people who come in and say, Hey, I made a new friend that I continue to talk to after this class. It's like a social gathering, just almost like a college party, I would say. A little bit, a little bit tamer though.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, it sounds fun. So, uh Shelly, what role does the instructor play in helping guests feel comfortable even if they've never

Instructor Support And Guidance

SPEAKER_01

painted before?

SPEAKER_02

Uh, the instructor is up on a stage, which could be a little intimidating at first, but what the instructor does, I was an instructor myself, I hop off that stage multiple times and I go over and I will go right to your painting. They'll talk to you about like, hey, this is how you can hold a brush, you know, cleaning it, take you step by step. So even if you've never held a paintbrush before, you will get that one-on-one time with the professional painter who can show you how it's done.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, that's

Sip And Paint Explained

SPEAKER_01

so cool. So tell me a little bit more about the sip and paint element. How does that help add to the the fun and social side of painting with a toy?

SPEAKER_02

Well, there's a reason why uh we have so many wines and different stuff. Now, I'm not even gonna try to pronounce all of them because uh it's a little bit of a tongue twister, but if you have like a specific like type that you like, we probably have it. We have beers for anyone who wants a little bit of that. And it's just like a a little boost of confidence, we like to say. Help mellow out the stress from the week. One of our most popular classes are like Friday and Thursday because you've had already a long week, so you can just sit down, relax, get a little bit of a little bit of sip and paint, and just just start drifting the paint all over your canvas.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I love it. So,

Events And Private Parties

SPEAKER_01

what type of events and celebrations do people often book at Painting with the Twitch?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah. We have private parties, so we've got birthdays, we've had Bachelorette parties, which those ones are always really fun. We have company events, so it is a great opportunity to just, you know, get to know your coworkers more in such a different environment. So those ones are actually really popular. We have kids' parties just for the fun of it, you know, uh family gatherings, any reason why you could have a party, you could turn it into a painting with a twist party.

Reassurance For Nervous Painters

SPEAKER_01

So, Shelby, for someone who's nervous about not being artistic, what reassurances would you give them?

SPEAKER_02

Um, I would tell them that it's really not about what the end product is gonna look like because that's what brings in the nervousness. You are taking a blank canvas that had nothing on it, literally blank, and you turned it into something that nobody else could do. And that's pretty much all there is. And it's about, you know, just taking your time, not focusing on the little details, and you get to show that off at the end of the day. And regardless of what it looks like, you should be a little bit proud.

SPEAKER_01

And what are you the most proud of, Shelby, with painting with a twist?

Pride In Community And Smiles

SPEAKER_02

I'm proud of seeing all the different kinds of people who show up to our painting classes, especially when I was an instructor. I saw really the old, the young, the inexperienced, the um literally the my favorite term is people who like are holding the paintbrush like with their complete fist who are just like holding it like that. And they always will end the class with a smile, and they were just like, hey, look what I painted. And I just that makes me so happy after the class. And anyone could come in and do that.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I love it. Well, this was been so fun talking to you about this, Shelby.
