The whispering oak stands tall in its clearing, the way it has stood for more years than anyone can count. Moonlight pulls between its roots and climbs its bark in pale, silvery ribbons. Leaves whisper to one another, low and old and patient. The way leaves do when the evening is just beginning to settle. High in the tree, a nest of woven twigs sits in the crook where two strong branches meet. It is a good nest, snug and round, lined with soft things gathered one by one. Dandelion fluff, a curled strip of soft bark, a single downy feather from their mother's chest. The whispering oak has held many nests, big ones and small ones, ones with eggs and ones with feathers. But tonight's nest is special, not because of what it's made of, but because of the two small birds inside it, and the argument they are having without saying a single word. The younger wren, small and brown and bright-eyed, has been tucked in. Her mother smoothed the feather across her back, told her brother he could stay awake a little longer, and flew softly away into the evening. And now her brother sits on the branch just outside the nest. He is watching fireflies lift from the ferns far below, tiny lights floating up like sparks of gold. He is watching the sky turn from orange to pink to the deepest, softest purple. He is doing everything she cannot do. She presses to the edge of the nest, her small beak hooks over the rim. She watches him, his feathers catching the last of the light, his head turning this way and that, following things she will never see. She tucks her beak beneath the woven edge and huffs. Tiny frustrated breaths that puff against the bark. She is certain that the very best things happen just after her eyes close. And the worst part is she can never prove it because she is never awake to see. It isn't fair, it is never fair. Being told to sleep first means being smaller, less trusted, less important. She knows this the way small creatures know things, not with words, but with a feeling that sits heavy in her chest, like a stone she swallowed by accident. In the neighbouring branch, not far away, slumber is settled in his fern cradle. The curved fronds fit around him like cupped hands, and he watches the evening arrive the way he always does, slowly and with great interest. His deep, kind eyes, like pools of evening water, have noticed the huffing. He has been listening to every small breath of it. He does not tell her she is wrong. Instead, he shifts in his cradle the faintest movement like a leaf slightly bending in a breeze, and he asks very gently Have you ever noticed what the forest does just after the first creature falls asleep? The younger wren goes still. Her beak lifts from the bark. She hasn't noticed because she is always asleep. No, she says in the smallest voice a wren can make. Slumber's eyes fill with something warm. He does not hurry, he never does. He grips the branch beneath him with his long claws and settles a little deeper into his fern, and he begins, not like someone giving a lesson, but like someone remembering something beautiful he has seen many, many times. He says, Listen to the now. Just that one. They change. They tell a different kind of story. A softer one meant only for whoever rests first. The younger Wren's eyes go wide.

Only for them. He tells her how the silver green moss far below the branches begins to glow. Not bright, not sudden, the softest light, as if the ground itself is breathing out. He tells her how the dew settles on the nearest spider silk and holds the moonlight inside each drop like a tiny lantern. But only in that first gentlest moment of rest. Before anything else, before anyone else. Just for whoever arrives there first. The younger Wren's eyes are wide, then heavy, then half closed. The huffing has stopped. Something else has taken its place. Something warm settling in her chest, where the heavy feeling used to be. Above them, the oak's leaves shift just barely, as if leaning closer. Slumber's voice is as warm as honey tea. I have watched it happen every single night, he says. And the forest has been waiting very patiently for you to arrive there first. The younger wren does not answer. Her beak tucks slowly beneath her wing. Her feathers settle against the woven twigs, soft against ruff, warmth against bark. Her breathing changes. It becomes round, slow, small and steady, like a rhythm the nest has been waiting to hold. The nest shifts with the new stillness in it. So gently you could barely feel it. The way a bowl of water changes when you stop stirring. Everything finds its place. On the branch outside, the older brother has stopped watching the fireflies. He is watching something else now. His sister. Her small shape curled in the center of the nest. Feathers rising and falling. Rising and falling. The nest looks different with her settled inside it. It looks warmer, fuller, like something he wants to be near. The branch is fine. The evening is fine. The fireflies still drift in their slow looping arcs. But none of it feels as warm as that. Something in him goes quiet and warm. He hops to the edge. He pauses just for a moment. The way a note pauses before it finds the next one. And then he tucks himself beside her, fitting into the curve of her back, the way a second note fits beside the first in a song. His feathers settle against hers. His breathing finds hers and matches it without trying. Not because he was told to, not because his time was up. Because the nest looked warmer with her in it. And he wanted to be where the warmth was. Slumber watches from his fern cradle. His deep eyes filled with a feeling so warm. He does not need a word. He does not say a thing.
