Hello, hello. It is I, your freshly baked luchador. And with me, as always, is the ever-smiling, ever-jovial Grand Patricio, and we are the Super Banter Brothers. Welcome to episode 13, I want to say.
SPEAKER_03Uh I believe it's episode 13, based off of the uh off of the software we use to record these things.
SPEAKER_02Uh off of the math that uh we are not good at.
SPEAKER_03Nope. I at least well, me. Uh us entertainer types, us theater kids, not known for our mathematics.

SPEAKER_03Uh it I mean, it's the truth, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02Before we get started on our podcast today, I do want to talk about something that happened a second ago because uh Grant had ordered food, breakfast to be exact, so that he could have breakfast before recording and he would be full and satiated and ready to record. His breakfast did not come on time.
SPEAKER_03Why the heck he was it two hours late?
SPEAKER_02I don't know. Was it still good?
SPEAKER_03Um shockingly, most of it was. Um the there you go. Like the the coffee made it okay, the hash browns made it okay, and the the the main course, of course, needed a little bit of a reheating, but I've got so many kitchen gadgets I can make that happen.
SPEAKER_00So there you go.
SPEAKER_03I can salvage it, but um never do a double dash. It will get messed up. Never do a double dash, it will get messed up. Um, the only double dash that is acceptable in this house from now on is Mario Kart double dash, but it's a totally different kind.
SPEAKER_02So because of that, we got our podcast recording started later than planned because we were planning to start at 10 a.m. to start recording, and we ended up starting at 10:45. We could have gotten started at 10:30 because Grant managed to Kirby his entire breakfast.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_02But by the time he was done Kirbying, I went to the restroom. He'd sends me a text that says, Hey, I Kirby'd my breakfast. I'm ready to record whatever you are. And I was like, poop emoji. And he sent a thumbs up.
SPEAKER_03Sometimes that's all you need to know. Sometimes that's all you need to know.
SPEAKER_02Not a TMI, not a gross, but thumbs up. I respect that.
SPEAKER_03I mean, we call each other brothers beyond the podcast, okay? You tell me you need the poop emoji? I give you the time for the poop emoji. Quite literally, you can't rush this shit. It'd be bad.
SPEAKER_02Stop. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_03Gotta love breaking the donut within the first three minutes.
SPEAKER_02I know, Jesus. No, no, not even a new record. I know that uh you have made me laugh at various moments way earlier than that. So, anyways.
SPEAKER_03That's just how our morning started, y'all, when we were getting ready to record this episode. But to um shift gears from something away, you know, uh uh away from the shitty happenstances. Senor Donut, what have you been playing? On stream, off stream, and I will not touch that backlog with a 20-foot pole.
SPEAKER_02You right? Um, well, uh, I have been on stream. I have been playing two things recently, three things technically. The first one is I have gotten back on the Animal Crossings New Horizons horse. I have jumped back onto the island. I started a brand new island and was quickly uh quickly found out that um that Stardew Valley had um spoiled me. Because in Stardew Valley, when you end your day, you go to sleep, the game saves, and you go on to the next day. In Animal Crossing, there is no such thing. When you finish for the day, when you finish your tasks, the things that you set out to do, that's it. You have to wait until next day. So if you wanted to upgrade your house or whatever, you would have to wait the in-game until the next day um setup.
SPEAKER_03So doesn't it live off of the uh switch's real-time clock though?
SPEAKER_02It does, meaning you can time travel, you can push forward your uh time on your switch, but I don't do that because I play the game the way it was intended.
SPEAKER_03So no chaos control for you, huh?
SPEAKER_02No chaos control for me. You just play the game the way it was meant to be played.
SPEAKER_03Respect.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03That's the way that's the way I do it too. I mean, um it did time travel and amiiibo cheese are two different realms of playing the game the way it's supposed to be played, but you know.
SPEAKER_02So about that amiibo cheese. About that amiibo cheese.
SPEAKER_03I only know about the amiibo cheese because for Valentine's Day, I got boyfriend a bunch of amiiibo cards, so he could amiibo cheese. And he's he has been cheesing so hard with those amiibos. So hard.
SPEAKER_02So about that amiibo cheese, I have this little device right here, which is called a Flashebo Pro. And what it allows me to do is pull forth any amiibo that has been created thus far and put them into my island so I can summon any villager that I want to be on my island, play their little mini games so that I get whatever villagers that I want on my island, which is called Lucha Land, by the way. I wonder why, I don't know, but that's what I called it.
SPEAKER_03And no, no direct inspirations there at all.
SPEAKER_02No direct inspiration, none at all. Um, but this device has allowed me to call forth all manner of masked or appearing to be masked islanders to Lucha Land. So now I have Lucha, I have Clay, I have Stinky, uh, I have Mineru from Legend of Zelda, um, and I have my original islanders, Muffy and uh Roald. Uh, and I'm looking to replace the other ones with, you know, better luchiners. I am not replacing Lucky. Lucky was my my first island, uh, my first island um resident that I that I found out in the wilds. And I love him to death. Um, so yes, uh, those are my original villagers. Those are those are the ones that I'm gonna be keeping. Um, but I have a couple that I'm gonna give the boot to eventually. Um But yeah, I I am gonna make my dream lucha land island filled with luchadors and other masked individuals. It's gonna be fantastic.
SPEAKER_03Can you build a theme park? Because Lucha Land sounds like that it deserves a theme park somewhere on that island, whether it be the main island or as part of the vacation homes.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah, that that is in the plans, but that's like far, far away. Uh, because my island is still a baby island for babies. Um baby island. So, yes, I uh I am building my Animal Crossing Island. Uh, I ran a hide-and-go-seek game on my island with my community not too long ago, which was surprisingly stupidly fun. Like we played for like two hours playing hide and seek. Yeah, it was wild. Uh, that inspired me to completely uh rebuild my island and my plans for it. So now I have a musical chairs section, I have a uh pitfall maze, and I have an obstacle course uh to to run so that you know people can uh can try and get the better time or win or whatever. Um, and I'm thinking about adding a fashion show as well, but uh we'll we'll see what happens because the one time that I ran a community event going, hey guys, come to my nobody came. Nobody came. All the fucking work that I put into it, nobody came. And you know what? That's on me. That's on me because I decided, hey, I stream on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the daytime. Most people work, you know. I should have run it on the weekend. That's what I should have done. So next time I run it, I will definitely run it on the weekend, and hopefully there will be more interested parties to join. But uh that's that's what I've been doing um on stream is the Animal Crossing, and then also uh starting Leaf Green for the first time.
SPEAKER_03How far are you now? I I remember when you were uh first uh first starting your first playthrough, which quick divergence or uh quick fun fact. Uh the Switch is actually getting um re-releases, like legit re-releases of Fire Red and Leaf Green like tomorrow by the day this is being recorded.
SPEAKER_02Which is ridiculous, by the way. Like, I just started it, and you know what? I'm gonna keep on playing the version that I'm playing because I can do that. I don't have to buy into Nintendo's, like, you know, hey, we got Pokemon, and guess what? We're not gonna put it on the NSO, we're gonna make you pay for it. Uh yuck. No, thank you. No, thank you. I already pay for your NSO service that you easily could have put this on, but no, you decided to be greedy. So I'm not gonna touch that with a 10-foot limbo pole.
SPEAKER_03Hey, fair enough.
SPEAKER_02Grant already pre-ordered both versions.
SPEAKER_03Um, first of all, it would only be fire red. Second of all, it would be at the behest of my man's. And thirdly, it's because I already have like every other Pokemon game under the sun in an official release capacity. So wanting to be able to play Fire Red and then transfer those Fire Red raised Pokemon to Pokemon Home to have them all in one place, because I already have it all. It's just like I'm kind of in it for the long game at this point.
SPEAKER_02Did they say that you could actually do that? That you could transfer your Pokemon?

SPEAKER_03They are working in Pokemon Home integration just like they still need to work in integration for Legend ZA. And if they do release uh Coliseum and XD for the GameCube on NSO like they planned, who knows if you'll be able to do uh Pokemon home integration with those? Somehow I doubt it. But it's Pokemon's 30th anniversary. They're trying to go hard, including with their own Animal Crossing like, which is releasing Sweet Diddly Jesus next week.
SPEAKER_02Which I did pre-order.
SPEAKER_03Not surprised there. Probably should have.
SPEAKER_02Did pre-order that game because it's a cozy game and it's uh it's does it deals with Pokemon. Yep. Um, so we'll see, we'll see how that goes, see how it plays. I'll probably be playing it on stream along with everybody else, going like, hey, this is a new game, come check it out. And then they'll be like, Oh, you know what? It's either amazing or man, this game is mid compared to the other cozy games that are out there. But you never know. We'll see. We'll see what happens with that.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_02Um, but to answer your question, I just beat Misty and I uh met Bill. I'm on my way to the uh SS Vermillion or SS Victoria or whatever it's called. Vermillion. SSN.
SPEAKER_03SSN.
SPEAKER_02That's what it was called. Um, and I did meet the Pokemon fan club.

SPEAKER_02We know that that fan club is more than a fan club, right? Like, you know that.
SPEAKER_03Right. I I have my hunches. Um uh that the owner is fantasy like practically fantasizes over a fire horse and gives you a bike voucher for your trouble, so you can just ski daddle on out of there even faster than you showed up.
SPEAKER_02Um I let's call it what it is, Grant. It's a bribe. It's a bribe so that you will not tell anybody about his horse fantasies, his equestrian, his fire equestrian fantasies.
SPEAKER_03So do you think in his mind Rapidash is an anime horse girl?
SPEAKER_02Oh, 100%. 100%. This man, this man is fucking his horse. Just saying. Just saying, throwing that out there.
SPEAKER_03I this is this is where I could throw more shade at Umamusume pretty derby. See how I remembered the name this time and put some respect on that.
SPEAKER_02You did look at you putting some respect on that name. I'm proud of you, Grant.

SPEAKER_02It's not just him either. It's the other people in that room. When you talk to them, they start spouting like love about their Pokemon.
SPEAKER_03I mean, all we have to go to for that is Ash's mom. Ash's mom set the precedent with the Mr. Mime.
SPEAKER_02Was that but that was just in the anime, right? That's how it started? Yes. Okay.
SPEAKER_03That was just that anime exclusive with that one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, because I don't remember seeing a Mr. Mime when I started the game.
SPEAKER_03No. Uh, the only Mr. Mime in any of the Canto games that are not named Let's Go, uh, is via a trade near the backside of Diglett's Click Cave close to Pewter, that you need to trade an Abra to get.
SPEAKER_02Jesus Christ, man. You know all of the this stuff.
SPEAKER_03Uh uh You know what? It's why I ended up being a virgin even after college. I'm a sentient Pokedex.
SPEAKER_02Self-burn, let's go.
SPEAKER_03Who says I'm not a fire type anyway?
SPEAKER_02Need to pour some burn heal over that right there.
SPEAKER_03I mean, my favorite poke one of my starters is Squirtle. I could just have them use Water Gun. That that might that might be a faster solution.
SPEAKER_02Um there you go. Uh, but those are the games that I've been playing on stream. Off uh, oh, and then there's other another horror game that I've recently played called Reanimal. Have you heard of that?
SPEAKER_03I feel like you brought it up before.
SPEAKER_02Re-animal, I did bring it up when I was ranting about uh Little Nightmares 3 and how much I hated it compared to this upcoming game called Reanimal, which is made by the original studio that made Little Nightmares 1 and 2. So, yes, uh I managed to play some of it with another fellow streamer friend called Tonka Blanks. Um, we had a fantastic time playing it. Uh, so we're probably gonna finish it up sometime soon. Although I do hear, I do hear that it has also DLC, which makes me a bit wary because I was very pissed off at um the other game, uh Little Nightmares 3, because it didn't finish the story. So I'm hoping that this game finishes the story um and lets you kind of continue on with, you know, things that will um not not improve upon the story, but uh add to it, like not necessary to get the whole story kind of thing, you know? Um off-stream has just been a bunch of random games that I've played. Ball Pit is uh a fantastic game that I played, which is kind of like um like the game Breakout, except it had adds roguelike elements. I think I talked about it last time, but I'm not 100% sure. But I was playing that game forever and a day ago. Um and then also uh the Stanley Parable. Have you ever heard of that game?
SPEAKER_03Yes, I have. I have heard of the Stanley Parable.
SPEAKER_02Fantastic game, amazing, just so funny. Uh just a game that like even now I think still breaks the boundaries of what uh of what choice means in a video game.
SPEAKER_03I thought Mass Effect really uh broke the boundaries on that. That uh the uh Bioware Mass Effect series.
SPEAKER_02So yes, but those choices are still written down and planned, and you have to choose them. You have to select the choice that you're going to make in games like that. In the Stanley parable, uh, you do not have a hey, I'm gonna pick and do this. You have uh a landscape that you live in, and the narrator tells you what you're supposed to do, but you don't have to listen to the narrator.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah, and then doesn't the narrator have like several other voice lines in case you go against what he initially says? Yes, you like have to stumble in and narrate what you actually choose to do.
SPEAKER_02Yes, and it is fantastic. Um, they came out with uh the Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch, because that game originally came out in I want to say 2013 and it was re-released in 2018, I think, or something like that. I forget, but it's a fantastic game. You should definitely uh definitely give it a play if you've never played it before. Uh, even if you have played it before, uh, the original, play the uh ultra deluxe version. You will not be disappointed. I took so much time talking about games that I've been playing because it's been a while since it was recorded. So uh Grant, what have you been playing?
SPEAKER_03I'll do my best to be brief. Um, on stream, my main my main thing actually goes back to Pokemon. I have been continuing my playthrough of Pokemon Infinite Fusion. Uh, also takes place in Kanto, but the whole gimmick is you can fuse any two Pokemon together to either get some really cool art, some really cool types, or some utterly monstrous abominations. And you don't know what you're gonna get until you see it. Um, I ended up like the last time I played it on stream, I had to find a place to grind because the Lavender Town Celadon City combination just created a massive level spike that wasn't there in any of the other Kanto games. Um but now I have uh I remember you chimed in on one of the on the stream for it. I have a Graveler Gyarados named Rocky Horror.
SPEAKER_02Um I have that one being like the most abominable thing I've ever seen in my life.
SPEAKER_03It still needs its Graveler side still needs to evolve into Golem, so it still has one chance to prove that wrong. Um I have a Snorlax Regigigas, which is absolutely busted. Uh a Zapdos Raichu, an Articuno Miss Magius, uh the Halucha Entei is still around. And there there was one, like that is the five, but I forget who the sixth one is. No, wait, my starter, Gardevoir Rayquaza. Um, just a bunch of fusions with crazy typings. It's great. I am outside of the fuchsia city gym right now, um, ready to take on Koga and whatever the heck his typings are. Um and then last week for my stream, I played a couple of nifty games, one of which is called My Voice Zoo, which it's it's trying, it tries to be a cozy game, but the whole gimmick is you adopt a bunch of animals to your little airy land area. They call it a zoo. Um, it's got like a ice biome, a desert biome, a swamp biome, a forest biome, etc. But the gimmick is you have to make all the animal noises yourself. I am a voice actor. You can imagine where this is going very quickly. Um, the first animal I adopted was a duck, and uh, I play it duck feeping, and I play fire. Um that I did for, you know, and I named him Daffy, of course. You adopt Bear, I did a Winnie the Pooh impression. Um, there was an eagle I named Sam the Eagle after the Muppets, and I just quoted the meme. No. Um, and that's pretty much the entire game. I ended up being able to adopt and voice all of the selectable animals in about 90 minutes. It's a short little game. You can always go back in and redo the animal voices if you want, but that that was that was a fun one. And that was hot on the heels. And if I make a little uh may make a little career self-plug here for a sure, go ahead. Um at the time of this recording, Killer Inn has been in early access for about a week, maybe 10 days. And I voiced one of the playable characters in Killer Inn, the Handyman character class. So as part of that same stream where I played my voice zoo, I also played some Killer In just to have that experience of I voice this character, I'm playing this game, I get to now hear the takes that the developers chose and the some of the lines that I recorded that I completely forgot about. Just reminded me how much fun that session was.
SPEAKER_02That's awesome, man. How how uh wild is it to hear your own voice talk back at you when you're playing a game?
SPEAKER_03It is a very surreal feeling, especially if you're you know, the likes of Roger Craig Smith and oh god, I'm blanking on all of them. D. Bradley Baker, like any well-known voice actor in the video games you love, they probably still feel this, but they're also more used to it, so it's not as pronounced of a feeling. I can't speak for them, that's just a guess. But as this is really the first time I'm in this situation in this direct of a playable character capacity, it is very surreal. It reminds me of how grateful I am to had have had the opportunity for the session. And just hearing some of the lines that come out of my character's mouth, I'm like, wait a minute, they thought to write that? That's hilarious. Like uh like in what uh at one bit, I pick up a piece of body armor as an equipment and uh and uh Gary just says, I'm bulletproof, right? And I just cracked up with that. And I'm like, oh I like I rem, you know, I saw when I brought this up to some other people I've been I was able to tell about it, they're like, So Grant, did you watch yourself die? And I'm like, plenty of times actually. I see myself in a chloroform from behind shot while in the pause menu. Uh, I did not realize how much of a serious cough I was giving in that coughing take when my character was surrounded by poison gas. Um, but that's but again, it's super surreal. It was an awesome experience to work on the project, to play the game, to just chat about it. Someone in my Twitch chat was like, Can you voice over yourself? And I literally had to tell them, Well, I don't know what line's gonna come up where, so you might hear a delay, but sure, I'll try. Um, so that was on stream, and off-stream, I've been playing uh Cult of the Lamb with Boyfriend because that great game. Mm-hmm. It got a uh Winter Haven, I believe. It's either Woolhaven or Winter Haven. A new paid DLC.
SPEAKER_02That's why everyone's playing it right now.
SPEAKER_03Yep. It got a paid DLC that adds um mechanics to basically shield your people from harsh winters that get harsher and harsher as you progress that story. You can also raise animals in a in a farmland that you're allowed to build. Uh you get more space to work with on the map or your little village, um, more follower forms, uh, wolves can come ransack your village now. Uh the dev the devs say that they basically tried to make another this expansion about the same size as the base game.
SPEAKER_02Oh, wow.
SPEAKER_03DLC. And uh it does sort of force you to go back into base game levels to get resources to fund and power DLC related mechanics. So it took a few very long days of play to get through it all, but I only say that because I had boyfriend helping me out with most of it. Because if I was doing that on my own, I'd just I wouldn't do it. Um, one of the reasons why cozy games confound me, I'm like, you find this cozy? I find it a longer list than tasks than my daily missions. How do I not get stressed out about all this? That's true. Um so we were playing that, and as of last night, I finally decided to try another crab's treasure aka the cartoony crab-based dark souls.
SPEAKER_02A dark souls type game.
SPEAKER_03Yes, a Dark Souls type game. Me, yes, I know. Shocking. I am just between Killer Inn and its genre twist and another crab's treasure and its genre twist, and Pocopia coming out with its genre twist. Like, I I'm actually exp I'm actually expanding to new horizons. Who figured? Next I'll just need to cross some animals. Oh wait, Pokemon Infinite Fusion. I'm already doing that. Anyway, um, but yeah, uh, those are the games I've been playing, and I guess I'll take on the segue because Pokemon, our main topic for today's episode is inspired primarily by Pokemon Go and other games of that sort, where you gotta use your phone, actually go outside, take your steps, maybe touch some grass gamers, and interact with the world around you. Um, we were talking about it uh just for some context for those who may not be in the know. We were talking about it before we started recording, and um you found the first game by Neantic, Pokemon Go's developer, um, that sort of inspired the entire push for the genre.
SPEAKER_02So it was called Ingress. And the game was, I think it was about hacking or something, or like, you know, getting control of the city by, you know, uh hacking into landmarks and you know, getting your your team to like control most of the city. It used geolocation data and geofencing in order to get you locked into wherever you were. I looked it up a long time ago because I was looking for something to do, because I had just moved to San Diego and I was like, hey, I want to explore more, I want to look around. So I heard about this app called Ingress, which was made by Neantic, and I downloaded it and started walking around. And, you know, it was great because I got to walk around, I got to learn more about my environment, um, and I got to like, I guess, uh quote unquote play this game that was team-based, but I never really met another person while I was doing it. So it was always like, you know, meeting somebody after the fact. Um, and not directly either. There never in my life have I met another person who was playing Ingress at the same time that I was and in the same location. But then they sold their base game to the Pokemon Company. And that's is history, as they say.
SPEAKER_03Everything changed.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Everything changed once the Pokemon company came into the fold. And they turned it into Pokemon Go, uh, an app where you can go out and find Pokemon and use your camera to find your Pokemon in very uh interesting and different and sometimes really funny locations.
SPEAKER_03Also, sometimes some very dangerous ones. Like I remember early on in the Pokemon Go hype, there was apparently a crowd of people clogging up a major thoroughfare because of a Poron had spawned in and it was like just added to the game or something.
SPEAKER_02I they this game has been around since oh geez, I it's been around for a long time, at least since I moved to San Diego, which was like you know, 10 plus years ago. Yeah. And it's still going strong.
SPEAKER_03It really is.
SPEAKER_02There are still people that are going like uh out walking in parks, you know, looking for Pokemon and like sometimes going with groups of people. There have been meetups and stuff uh that I've seen on on uh the you know meetup site or next door or other things. Um it's been a great way.
SPEAKER_03Right. Like I was out and about yesterday doing some mass consumerism when uh where boyfriend and I ended up, there was a Pokemon Go tour event happening. And like we were just looking at each other, why is it so crowded? But then we saw somebody with a laminated sheet on a clipboard with the Pokemon Go Tour logo, and it's we were both utterly shocked at how Pokemon Go still has such a dedicated player base, and from a Pokemon standpoint, it does make sense. Those events have uh a higher chance of a Pokemon being shiny, giving away exclusive moves. You can transfer Pokemon from Go to Pokemon Home now. So if you really want to save one, yeah, if you really want to save one because it's special to you, you the you get a certain amount of transfer credits every 24 hours, and you can use those transfer credits to send the Pokemon from Go to home. Any of the shinies I have found in Pokemon Go are in my Pokemon home now because I don't want to lose those things in case mobile data gets kaput.
SPEAKER_02Sure, sure. That's crazy that you can move Pokemon from Pokemon Go to Pokemon Home and then move them to a game if you so choose.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Wow.
SPEAKER_03That's like it is like Pokemon Go is still, it seems like very March, very March, very much a key part of you know Pokemon's overall strategy because they add more updates, they're constantly adding more Pokemon, new moves. Um, all the new megas from Legend ZA are slowly getting integrated into the game. Um, all of the Shin battles, raids, all using the same team dynamics that you brought up with Ingress, just you know, you're split onto three teams, yeah, but enhanced. You're split onto three teams based off of the canto legendary birds, and you go to these landmarks, and if they're your team's color, you can beef up whatever the landmark is. Like when I was playing it very frequently when I moved to my current place, uh, I would see yellow build like buildings coated in yellow for gyms, for battle facilities, the whole bit. And I'd just be going around on my morning walk, throw some potions here, put a Snorlax there, conquer a gym here, throw Blissy in it. Just uh it's it's still going strong after God knows how like 10 plus years, and that's that's a shock to me, honestly.
SPEAKER_02Speaking of when it came out, there were a lot of things that happened uh that were in the news that were concerning Pokemon Go. I'm sure you remember the most infamous one being the town hall with the presidential candidates back in that time frame where Hillary Clinton famously said Pokemon these kids need to Pokemon go to the polls. Oh my god, why I was cringe that like that was so exact, it was so cringe. Looking back at it, it's it's really funny and sad, and we we don't get political here, but Jesus man, like if only things had turned out better, you know, back then.
SPEAKER_03Um if only the kids had actually done it and not yeah, if only they had gone to the polls, if only they had actually Pokemon gone to the polls and not rejected the notion because of the cringe, we we might be in a different timeline, and that's all I'm gonna say.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um, but the other thing that I wanted to bring up is that these landmarks uh that Neantic had gotten came from Google Maps or you know, other map programs like that. So when the Pokemon company took these uh this data from Neantic and they placed Pokemon in these areas that were landmarks, you got such interesting things like ghost type Pokemon showing up in graveyards, which you know, I mean sure, yes.
SPEAKER_03Why would you want to encourage gamers to like go there?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, that's exactly the point. It's disrespectful to those that are laying there for their eternal rest to suddenly pop up as a ghastly or a haunter. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Trivializing that whole thing was a bad move. Whether it be accidental or otherwise, trivializing that was a good thing. I also remember hearing some crazy things about like certain poke. I don't know which types of Pokemon. I just remember Pokemon spawning, like rare Pokemon spawning on what ended up being like private residential properties and people like going into other folks' backyards just to catch the rare spawn, whatever it was. Um, I also heard about things like happening with churches, with masses getting interrupted. Just like the early days of Pokemon Go. Yeah, people went outside, but they but there was no tact. There was no tact.
SPEAKER_02Like there was a wild west of Pokemon Go.
SPEAKER_03Indeed. Like the whole I think forgive me, I'm gonna put on my Pokemon tinfoil hat for a second.
SPEAKER_02Uh please do so.
SPEAKER_03The idea of the wild zones in Pokemon Legends ZA, just to make human existence and Pokemon existence more cohesive while sharing a primarily human-dominated environment, which is the case in Pokemon Legends ZA's Lumio City. Do you now think it could be a potential reflection and commentary on how Pokemon Go started? Because if you think about it, they had to make designated wild Pokemon safe zones in Pokemon Go using the data that they had, but flagging off areas like construction sites or churches or random highways or like all of these things where if a person were to get out and try to hunt a Pokemon, it would be either be unethical, immoral, or physically unsafe.
SPEAKER_02Wow. Okay. I see what you're I see what you're putting down.
SPEAKER_03Um like because Yeah, no, that makes sense. Over the years, Pokemon Go has um refined where Pokemon spawn and what kinds of Pokemon spawn, and even introduced literal regional exclusives. Like, unless it's from an egg in an event, I don't think you can get a Kangaskhan in the entire United States.
SPEAKER_02No, no, I I remember that being one of the things that people were very upset about.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So yeah, you think uh Legend ZA is a commentary on itself as a franchise?
SPEAKER_02I mean, maybe, maybe. Um the other thing is that I think it's hilarious that you know, churches would be seen as like gyms. There's a church right near my my home. And one of the funniest things that I remember seeing was that there was a Pokemon, and I rem I don't remember which one. It was either a fire type or some Pokemon that had horns, and it was called Satan, and it was at this church as the gym leader's boss.
SPEAKER_03If it was a hound doom, they it wasn't a houndoom. Oh, I was gonna say, if it was though, that that player knew what they were doing.
SPEAKER_02I think it all I think it was uh a pincer, actually, because of the horns that it has.
SPEAKER_03Also valid. Also valid.
SPEAKER_02It's it but it's wild to me that this game is still very popular, it's still going on. And now that I have a kid, I don't think it's that wild anymore. This is a great app for you to like you know, showcase with your kid to be like, oh look, there's a Pokemon. Uh my kid is like now starting to get into into Pokemon. So he you know knows Pikachu, he knows Psyduck, he knows um Umbreon. Uh so he knows a lot of different Pokemon. And uh, you know, he's using the Pokemon app to brush his teeth. Um, he's you know in more interested in Pokemon now than he's ever been. Um so this would be a great way for me to go out and play Pokemon Go with him and be like, hey, bud, let's go look for Pokemon, and we can go out and find them and battle them and do those things. And he would not only get exercise, I would not only get exercise, but it would be a way to bond with my kid.
SPEAKER_03Absolutely.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, it's it's a fascinating like phenomenon, I would call it. I would still call it a phenomenon, a cultural one, even because you know, you said that people were frustrated with the fact that they had to travel outside of their country to get all of the Pokemon. But if you had the means to do so, it would mean that you would travel the world and find these Pokemon and do those things and experience a richer life if you were financially able to do so.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_02You know? So I could definitely see this as being something that would be, you know, a very I guess I was gonna say cool, but then I was also thinking, man, this is a really nerdy thing to brag about that you've gone across the world and caught all of the poke, all of the regional specific Pokemon out there.
SPEAKER_03I mean, the way you could make it cool is just like, oh yeah, I went to it, I went to Japan. I saw uh I saw Tokyo Disney, the Tokyo Tower, uh Akihabra, caught the regional Pokemon while I was there, and then just sort of slide it in just slide it in. Super cool. Um or if you're like me, you would relish in the opportunity to be in the country that created Pokemon and engrossing yourself in the exclusive Pokemon-related things that we do not have here, like dedicated Pokemon Center stores, Pokemon cafes with original and decadent-looking food, um, Kanto's Poké Park that opened up, which is like a walking-based theme park with a few attractions based on Pokemon with things from the games that you can actually live in real life now. Like there's a Pokemon Center with a tray of Pokeballs that you can hand to a nurse joy. You hear the burp, burp, burp, burp, burp, burp, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, the entire process, just in real time.
SPEAKER_02Wow. Okay, so that that brings to mind a tangent that I want to go on real quick.

SPEAKER_02Okay. Uh I've seen um the Super Mario World or Land or whatever they call it that's in Japan.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_02They also have one in the States.
SPEAKER_03Yes, they do.
SPEAKER_02Now, I have not been to either of them, okay, but I have seen video of somebody going to Japan, somebody going to the US version.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_02Do you think that Japan has more of a I guess respect for their job or respect for the IP versus that they have more versus somebody that works at the same, you know, venue in the states. I'm gonna give you an example of what I mean.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_02So recently, uh recently, uh 7-Eleven has come out with the um the egg salad sandwich that is that it was popularized in Japan. Right. But they do not taste the same, and they are uh less filling or less generous with their filling than they would be in Japan, comparing. Now, do you think that's because of a cultural difference where uh the company or the individual that's making it is more um I guess like they they appreciate that something is being created, made, you know, based for the the IP that they're making it for. Or do you think it's more of a I don't know. I don't know. You know what? I don't know what I'm trying to say.
SPEAKER_03I'm trying to say I feel like I get the gist of your question and yeah, trying to figure out if it's more of a cultural thing versus a dare I say mechanical procedural thing just for the sake of generating the product to make the money to you know keep things to keep the experience on both sides of the planet.
SPEAKER_02If I'm if I am understanding, that's exactly exactly what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_03Cool. Um, I think it does play a role, but it is just one of many factors because I have been able to go to uh because fun fact, the United States has two Super Nintendo worlds, technically, one in Southern California and the other in Florida. The I was able to go to the one in Southern California, and it is, no question, the smallest one, which means it's just it just needs the base experiences that are required across all of the Nintendo worlds, which is Mario Luigi and Peach character appearances, interactive games with a power-up band that serves as an amiibo that you can buy from the park, um, that leads into a Bowser Jr. mini boss fight, um, and the Toadstool Cafe. That is all, or if and if I didn't mention the Mario Kart ride, the Mario Kart ride. Um that is all the Nintendo world in Southern California has. And it's a lot of fun. Uh, and the staff around there, it really depends on who you get. Because Southern California plus theme park workers, plus dealing with tourists and entitled people, it's really a crapshoot if you get a uh the someone who likes their job, someone who puts effort into their job, or someone who's just there for the paycheck. I don't really think it's IP disrespect in that way. Um, and for the California one, it's just because of a lack of space. Like the it's uh on the lower lot of Universal, but the lower lot also has Jurassic Park, The Mummy Returns. I think there's one other attraction that I'm just like blanking on right now. Yes, something related to Transformers. The lower lot is kind of cramped, so they don't really have much space to give the California one Donkey Kong country, which Japan has, or anything themed to Yoshi beyond like a kit special event character appearance that uh Florida and Japan also have. So at least in that respect, it's just space and working with what you can. Um, but through being able to have more space, work with the IP more, it makes more sense to me that folks would say, oh, Florida and Japan respect the Nintendo stuff more because they can do more with it. And in Universal Japan, they already have Pokemon integrated into their parade, if not more activities. So at least in Japan, there might be a little bit of an IP bias because it all comes from there, and they like the um Miyamoto and the higher ups in those companies are more familiar with how it uh like creating these experiences would work in Japan. And I'm not saying they're not familiar with the international way of doing things because they're international brands now. They have to be on some level. But I think it's just like I said, I think it's a lot of factors. And getting back to the egg salad sando one, I think it's uh mostly because Japan is known for their cuisine, the fresher ingredients, the genuinely just taking more care to make sure the food is prepared properly and fresh and in a in a high-quality way. Because having been to Japan myself, people live off of 7-Eleven convenience store food, and it's actually healthy for you in Japan versus in America where it isn't. Far from it it's blah. So, yes, they're bringing over the popular egg salad sando, but it's made the American way, from what I understand. And because it's made the American way, it may not taste the same. There may be fewer eggs in the egg salad and more mail. Sure, they got the bread and the packaging right, but it doesn't taste the same because the ingredients aren't as fresh, the culinary practices aren't as fresh, and the inner workings of 7-Eleven as a company don't match Japan's standards, they match America's standards for the American egg salad sando. So while respect for the IP and respect for the original dish being lower here than in Japan may be a part of it, I think it's just one of many different things. SPEAKER_02Thank you for going on that tangent with me because it's it's been something that I've always like wondered about. Like, I don't know, like you uh like you brought up cuisine, right? Cuisine is a a big important part uh of you know uh Japan. When anybody visits, they always talk about the cuisine. They always I always see videos like of like you know people preparing food and how like they take time with it. They especially the the Tepanyaki places where they have like you know that Benihana's kind of thing going on, except it's not as showy as it would be at Benihana's or whatever. So yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um but speaking of uh speaking of an oh, I'm sorry, uh please.
SPEAKER_02No, no, no, please, because I I was trying to find a way to get back to our topic because he railed it so badly.
SPEAKER_03That that's like I was just gonna say, let's top a tangent with another tangent real quick, because as far as like geolocation games, we've really only talked about the most successful one, which is Pokemon Go on the foundation of Ingress. Uh, but many other IP have also tried to take advantage of that same technology and that same level of immersion, uh, to the point where I may be forgetting that some even exist, and I can really only say I've tried Pokemon Go and was interested in one more until it got canceled. Um, which is Kingdom Hearts Missing Link, which was going to be, like without giving too much away, because we are going to have minor behind-the-scenes spoiler, we are going to have a Kingdom Hearts Deep Dive episode coming out soon. So as to not infringe on that one's territory too much. Um, Missing Link was going to take place between the first major hit mobile game and Kingdom Hearts 1, deal with plot lines and stringing together plot lines and bringing closure between those two games in a geolocation setting where we would have to go out of our houses and fight Heartless in real time by using uh chain of memories-esque attack cards and character cards for special moves. Okay. Um, for whatever reason, Square Enix decided to uh pull the plug on that project and implement some of the story sequences in future more mainline Kingdom Hearts releases. The fanbase expects Kingdom Hearts 4. Um, a few people did get to play it. They said, you know, with some work it would be fun. I wanted to get on the closed beta, but I didn't I didn't make the cut. But that's just one of many other geolocation games that sure you might have heard of, but you probably never played.
SPEAKER_02I mean, there was a Pikmin one that uh I definitely played because the kiddo was into Pikmin for a while as well. Um, they have a Monster Hunter one.
SPEAKER_03Um there was Harry Potter for sure. There was Harry Potter, Harry Potter for sure.
SPEAKER_02They had another one that I can't remember. Um that was also uh similar in time in terms of its IP usage. I don't know if there was a Marvel one. There might have been one, or maybe I'm remembering a different game. There have been a lot of different iterations.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but none of them had the staying power of Pokemon Go. Like, it's again, just knowing how people are now, especially post-pandemic, more freely going outside and exploring the world and doing things again. Like, it's sh both shocking to me and logical to me how these games can both still have a very active core dedicated user base, but also for some of the earlier adopters of the game, like I was, let's face it, um, just to sort of fall off. Not really not like it we can do it if we remember, but like literally again, um, yesterday by the lens of when this episode's being recorded, uh, boyfriend and I were literally asking each other, why didn't we play Pokemon Go at all today when we saw the Pokemon uh Go Tour thing happening? And I didn't join in no, like we just totally didn't think of it until we left the area of mass consumerism. And we're just like, huh, guess we didn't really think of it. I mean, it's too late now, we're going back to the car, but if we had thought of it, then we might have found something cool. Who knows?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, no, that's uh that's completely fair. Um it's I don't know, like I feel like it's more of either a really young person's game so that you can hang out and socialize with friends and go on walks or whatever, or a really old person game where you need to get your steps in and walk around. But like the in-between generation, they got other things to do that are more important or maybe less important. I don't know. I think that the generation in between is kind of not the target demographic for this Pokemon Go experience anymore. It's really the younger kids or the really older kids, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03Or in your case, which as uncle I would love to be involved with, um, helping the kiddo, helping you kiddos, you young kiddos, get outside more, maybe be more social, get exercise, give the gaming young kiddos a game to play with, you know, some bonding time in between. And like again, um kind of shoehorning myself in there. If there is a time I visit the donut family again and uh we go on a little you opt to go on a little uh Pokemon Go adventure with the mini, I would be honored if I could join.
