SPEAKER_00Welcome to an extended edition of PRN's Garage Pass. I'm Andrew Curlin and earlier this year, myself and Brad Gilly got the chance to sit down and chat with Bubba Wallace, driver of the number 23 car in the NASCAR Cup Series and defending winner of this weekend's race, the Brickyard 400. We asked Bubba to reminisce and asked him, what do you remember about last year's Brickyard 400? We got some pretty we got some pretty cool nuggets, including he still watches replays of that race to this day. It's a great conversation. Take a listen.
SPEAKER_04Take us through the day. Let's see. Well, we qualified second to Briscoe. I was pretty dejected over that. But uh yeah. A lot of people qualified second to Briscoe last year. That's true. That is true. Um so to be able to start the weekend off like that, I thought that was very encouraging. Um, you know, we we weren't the best car at times throughout the race, and uh the scenarios kind of just fell into our lap. Uh we we called a two-tire strategy there at the end um to gain a little bit of track position. Um, and then we came out behind the 22 car. And the funniest thing, like you you get you you're in the zone, you're focused, and so when he has his tire problem, um, you know, to me, I'm thinking there's 60 laps left, 50 laps left, whatever it is. And so I knew we inherited the lead once the cycle uh completed. And you know, Freddie's like, all right, 20 more to go. And it's like, oh, damn, like we're close. So it's like, all right, all right, focus three focus here. Like, I thought we had another pit stop. Like, I thought this was, I don't know. And so you kind of had I went through all these emotions within a matter of a straightaway of like, okay, don't count your eggs before they hatch, but damn, this would be cool if we'd win. Um and then of course Mother Nature came through um and kind of put a damper on everything. Um but then you know, I was still like laser focused on, you know, we're gonna go back racing, like be prepared. And going through those final two restarts. Uh the second one was obviously a lot better than the first, and we were able to hold Larson at bay and and come away with victory. So I thought it was just a uh cool moment for sure.
SPEAKER_00A lot of guys check out during a rain delay, and and especially the longer the rain delay is, they just want to leave, they're focused on just getting out of there. How do you stay locked in and in the zone when there's that unexpected downtime?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, well, you know, there's part of me like, oh gosh, another rain delay win potentially. Here we go. The world's gonna flip upside down social media. Yeah. Thought about that. Um, but the other side was like, no, like this one's destined to go to the very end. And knowing, understanding, like, it's just a small cell that's right there in turn one that you can see. Um, I I knew we would go back racing. Uh, but then you like started seeing like media members hop over the wall like 30 minutes into the rain delay. And it's like, like, are we winners? Are we not? Like, what's happening? You know, you start to get TV like ready, and it's like, what I'm not hearing anything. Like, and then you see the officials like, all right, we're going back. It's like, damn, all right, let's go, you know, focus back in. So um, yeah, there's there's a lot that you go through. Um, there's some moments where you're thinking about, well, what's for dinner? What time do we get home? I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, let's let's get back to the race. So have you gone back? Um, for TNT, Adam Alexander had the winning call for IMS radio. Nick Yeoman, who works with us as well, has a call. Have you seen on social media or reliv any of those moments where you actually get to see it from outside of the car and what that was like? And what do you think?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I think it's super cool. Although I I was I've I probably watch the indie race, I don't know, once a week. Uh legit. I go back and rewatch, yeah. I'll go not the whole thing, of course not. Just the last 20 laps.
SPEAKER_03No, no, you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, boom, here's the brickyard. All right.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I was uh I was in the middle of doing something on the Honey list and pulled up YouTube. So YouTube is the only form of social media that I have. I'm not on Twitter or Instagram or anything like that anymore. And so I'm always watching videos, and that pops up. And uh I was in the middle of doing something, and I just watching the last 20 laps, and I turned the volume up so she kind of knows what I'm doing, and so she didn't say anything. Uh but yeah, I'll go back and watch it. I'll go back and watch Talladega, Kansas. Uh those are those are good moments, and it's I think it's more of like a self-reflection and reminder that hey, you can do this, so get ready to do it again.
SPEAKER_00Is that hard as a race car driver to do? Like you win a race and it's like this great moment, and then you gotta go do it again next week. It's like the shelf life of victory is very short.
SPEAKER_04It's super I mean, it it lasts for a few hours, but then you you show back up to the meetings on Monday, and you know, everybody's congratulating you, but you're back in there talking about your day, and you're not it's not all, you know, guns ablazing, you know, the whole time. Um, you know, it's it's right back to work. So um unless you win the final race of the year, then it's you know, um, so that's what we hope to do.
SPEAKER_00Pretty cool insight from Bubba Wallace and really appreciate him taking the time. He's gonna try to defend his title this weekend. You can follow all the action on the IMS Radio Network.
