Edwin shares how basketball became more than a game. It became a bridge to trust. A way to reach kids who may never walk into a church, but will show up at a park, lace up their sneakers, and listen when someone treats them like they matter. In neighborhoods marked by violence, fatherlessness, fear, and loss, Edwin and his team bring something many of these young people are starving for: hope, belonging, and steady men of faith who keep showing up.

I get chills hearing it. Yesterday we spoke um at the men's Bible study breakfast that you joined us for. And one of the things that you said was that 95% of these kids don't have fathers. And in a world and in an environment where, like you said, young kids are getting killed over nonsense. What you're bringing them is hope. You're bringing them hope, you're bringing them a sense of family, a sense of community when maybe they would go off the rails out of desperation if they didn't have this.

I'm your co-host, Steve Ramona, and with my incredible co-host Chris Rushing, we're excited today because Christianity, faith, sports, and nonprofit are gonna come together today. Um big sports fan, a lot of you know. I have family members that played professional sports. Um, it's a great bridge between business and sports and the military, amazingly enough. But before that, before we get going here, here's our gratitude for today, because we just had great gratitude from Chris today. Let's speak something out and manifest it. You are awesome. Man, I am so proud and happy to have Edwin Santiago with us today. Edwin and I met in church um probably about a month and a half ago where he was doing a presentation talking about his nonprofit that he's extremely passionate about. I just felt a kindred spirit. As I walked up to him, I also knew before I asked that he was a Puerto Rican just like me. So we didn't we bonded right off the bat. And I wanted to really give him a platform to talk about what he's passionate about and the lives he's changing. So, Edwin, my brother, welcome. Welcome. Thank you.

Edwin is a Christian man. Again, I said we I told you we we um we met in church. And from what I know about the foundation, it's a ministry to um bring the good news, the word of God, through sports, through basketball specifically. And he works with a lot of kids that would not be exposed to that or could, you know, might not be exposed to that had it not be been for him and his passion to reach out and help the community. So, man, tell us what your foundation is called and uh the idea behind it and where you're at with it and and how we can help or how we can uh how we can get people on board to uh bring awareness to this.

All right. Um, it's called New York City Christian Athletic League. So short for Nike Also. If you see my shirt, it says Nikeal. Um basically started in 2009. Um actually it was a flag football ministry in the Bronx. I was visiting a church, I was part of a church in the Bronx, and next door there was a little playground that these kids used to play football. So some of the guys would come across uh after church and we'll play football with them, and then we'll go to my grandma's house, we'll cook dinner and watch the NFL games, and I was praying about it, and you know, we invite them to church, and basically the the vision the Lord gave me was like not only the kids in this neighborhood need this, the kids in the Bronx need this. So I said, Man, how do how do I do that? Uh so I sat around uh a grandma's table, I talked to three three or four guys in our church. We had no logo, we had no money, we had no name. Uh, Modell's was still around, so we went to Modell's down the block on Ford and Road. We brought three footballs and a couple of cones. So we told the boys, hey, next Saturday we're gonna go to Harrisfield and the Bronx, bring some people, and we're gonna create a flag football league. Showed up, there was maybe 15 kids there. Next thing you know, there was 40 kids at the park. We split them up into four teams. We drafted, you know, we we had, you know, we were trying to see what teams they were, and then every week from the middle of September to right before Thanksgiving, we were out of the park. And we would play football, we would arrange a Ron Robin schedule, we'll have devotions and pray with them. Um, and 17 years later, I'm talking with you guys. Over 1,500 kids have heard the gospel. We used to do football in the fall, basketball in the spring. The funny thing about basketball, uh, the month, exactly a month when it started in 2009, uh, two boys were shot and killed right on the playground where we were doing it. And the cops called me, says, You got to cut your basketball program. I know it hasn't started yet, but basketball bringing a lot of violence. And I said, But we want to bring joy and hope to this park. The park was known for prostitute and drugs and violence. Even the kids that were gonna join the league were scared to go there. One of my staff members was like, Ed, are you sure you want to go there? I'm like, Yeah, this is where we need to be. This is where we need to go. Um, so had meetings with community affairs and everything and said, Okay, but if anything happens, we're gonna shut you down. 17 years later, the Lord has blessed us. Um, you know, it's been great. There's been no um violence. Uh, you know, kids will be kids and stuff like that, but everybody's respect us in the park. And basically, it's a sense of belonging for these kids. We're bringing the gospel to them. Um, I don't know if I will go down Fordham Road or White Plains or anywhere and bump it to a kid and say to a kid, hey, you want to come to church with me? They're gonna look at me like I have three eyes and be like, oh no, no, no, no, no, no, I go to my own church. What if I say to them, hey, you guys want to go play some pickup basketball? Yeah, let's go to the park. It's a con, it's a relationship, you know, you're opening that relationship and that trust. And boy, it's been amazing. I mean, the stories that we could see here all day and talk about stories of what of what the Lord has done. Um, after COVID um hit, we basically just went into a full basketball uh ministry and we run a two-week basketball camp in July. We run one-day outreaches in May. This May alone, we had 150 kids who heard the gospel. 25 of them accepted the Lord, and that was just me. We haven't even gotten through camp yet. We haven't even got through August yet. Um, so the Lord is working, the Lord is working what we're doing. Um, I stepped out in faith. I was an educator for 25 years, an assistant athletic director in two private schools, and I left that. The Lord says, Leave that. I want you to do this full time. So uh I am I said, Lord, I'm 48 years old. You're crazy. Like this is what we do this now, like you know, like how's that gonna go over with life and the kids and just be able to do that? So yeah, I'm just living by faith, you know, just trusting each and every day that the Lord's gonna, you know, put me where he wants me to do and give me the resources to do this full time. And going full-time allows us to do you know, four-week camp instead of a two-week camp to do outreaches every month, not only a spring and summer. So we we stuck to spring and summer because we didn't have money to rent gyms, you know, and and and you had insurance. And when we were started, we didn't have any of that, you know, it was just us, a bunch of guys, let's go do, and we would never know 17 years later, we'll be here doing this. Um, but now it allows us to do stuff in the winter, um, reach little kids. Um, it's primarily a 12 age group, 12 to 17, 18, that middle school, high school area, uh, where these kids need to be uh really reach and get off uh get them off the streets. I mean, I opened the news the other day in the Bronx in Parchester area, and you know, one kid was stabbed, one kid was shot, teenagers. And I'm like, you know, this is just needs to stop. You know, it just needs to stop. Um, so yeah, you know, continue to pray for us and and and we're excited. Like I said, we're excited.

So Edwin, how do you oh no, just real quick, because what I'm thinking is you're talking, the sports is a fantastic bridge, but how do you bridge Christianity into that? Because probably a lot of these kids don't know God, have not involved with God, don't go to church. How do you bridge that?

SPEAKER_01 8:48

Um, so basically we we we share a message every single time. Um, and it looks different where we're at. So when we're at the park, um, you know, we we introduce ourselves and we tell them you're here to play basketball, we're here to talk to you about Jesus and introduce you to Jesus. Um, we set up with drills and skills and you know, we we work them out, then we all sit them down and we bring a pastor or a local pastor or myself or one of my staff members who will just give a testimony or share the gospel, you know, this is what the Lord says. Do you want to He wants to have a relationship with you? Would you accept that? And in different ways we preach that and basically just sharing the word with them. After that, we ask them if they have any questions, um, you know, if they want to want to accept the Lord, if if they felt the calling, whatever the message was. Um, so basically, like the other day, we talked about the greatest free gift. We talked about if there was uh a line for free sneakers, would you do you be on there? Most of them say yes. If they you guys sign up for a free tournament for them, it's free. You know, we raise the funds. 90 of you are here, no problem. Someone's giving our free food. So the Lord is giving us the greatest free gift that He can give us is Jesus Christ. He's putting it in your hands, you know what I mean? Would you ex all you gotta do is accept that? You don't have to be perfect, you don't have to score 90 points in the game, you don't have to, you know, you you some of the people say, Oh, I I've done this, this, and that, I've done this, this, and that myself, you know what I mean? And look, look what God's done in my life. Um, and then if they do accept Christ, even if they don't, it's just planting the seed, and they know that, and the opportunity to do that. When we go to camp, um, we basically have it's a four-hour camp from four to eight o'clock. At five o'clock, we have a hard stop and we bring in speakers and we do a 20-minute talk on the gospel, and then after that 20 minutes, we do another 20 minutes of a small group. So it's important, you know. People say, Oh, you just pray or you just you know read a verse and say what no. So we really pour into these kids, we really try to get them to understand that there's more than just basketball. Our slogan is more than a game, it's more, it's bigger than the court, you know what I mean? Um, and then after that, we play three on three and we feed them, but all of our staffs are believers, all of our staff, I recommend I I don't shy away from that because how are we going to show love to the kids if we're not walking with God? If we're not, you know what I mean? Some people say, Oh, I got this great basketball player, he played in college. You know, does he know the Lord? No, but he's you know, he was all NBA. I'm like, yeah, that's great, but that's not what we're about. And the Lord has blessed me with D2 champions, D three champions, you know, people who played overseas, but also love the Lord. And it's hard to find. It took me a long time to find that, you know, you know, have both skills at one time. I'll take you. Come on. But yeah, it's yeah, we give our Bibles, we give them tracks, um, and you know, to be able to um keep them in the word. Um, even if they if they, you know, some of them, you know, say, you know, um, I just want to know more. Okay, here's a Bible. You know, here's there's a there's a guy I told us at church the other day, a kid named Jay. Um, he came to a tournament and he says, Coach, can I ask you a question? I say, of course, okay. He tells me, Can I get a Bible? I said, Of course. I thought he was gonna ask me when he's playing next or something like that. We're in the middle of a tournament, you know. So we walk him over to the table and we give him a Bible, and uh he says, Where should I start reading, Coach? So I draw, I was like, What is going on? So me and my wife and the staff is there, we're talking to him. About a month and a half passes, we'll go back to the park. We had about a month break or something like that. So he comes in late and he says to me, Because, Coach, I have something to tell you. I said, Jay, you're late, man. We're two hours in. Because no, I don't want to play. Because I just came to tell you I got baptized yesterday. What I dropped the mic. We had a DJ was not happy. He was like, Oh my god, give him a hug. I just wanted to let you know that I got baptized, show me pictures. And to this day, me and Jay can out because we didn't go to church, he was in the church. You know, there's many stories like that, and there's many stories like that that we don't know. There's alumni that have come back and you know, DM me on Instagram, hey coach, what you did for me, you know, 10 years ago. Um, I'm walking with the Lord now. Sometimes I gotta look up these kids or ask my staff, you know, this kid or you know, because you you know you get so many kids in and out of the pro. But just those are just the minimum stories, but it's just being faithful, it's living out the great commission. It's you know what I mean. Uh, you don't have to be a missionary to live out the great commission. You know, we're we're to do it in our local coffee shops and who we work with and the people our neighbors. Um, you know, at this point we're doing it with the kids, but it's showing God's love and just planting seeds and and and leading kids, you know, people to Christ. It's been amazing. I get chills talking about it.

So, as a as a young man myself who grew up without a father, without much guidance, I remember the times where, you know, growing up poor, maybe the church had a scholarship program that allowed me to go to summer camp. And that was so monumental in my life. It gave me hope and it allowed me to keep going when I felt completely hopeless. So that's one of the things I wanted to emphasize too. I felt yesterday was 95% of these kids don't have a positive male figure in their life until you come along, you bring your community. And through sports, which is a very masculine thing, you're allowed to feel the power of competition, you know, getting your getting your body moving. But also when you bring your light, when you bring the good word, it allows someone to open up and receive hope. I'm not hopeless anymore. It doesn't matter where I came from. I'm seeing people doing it, I'm seeing men lead me. Because the other example they might see in the neighborhood are men who have gone the other way. And if they go that way, then there's no hope. You know, that's where the darkness comes. That's where puffing out your chest and demanding respect because you don't feel it in your own body gets you in trouble. And that just resonates with me. So that's another reason I wanted to get you on here to share your story because you're bringing hope. I want you to be able to do this full time. I want you to be the CEO at the plan and take this because you shared this with me. You want to take this everywhere. You want to have um satellite units and everything, you know, all over the place so you can make a huge difference with the time you've been given here on Earth. And that resonated with me because I'm very similar in my path. And so um we skipped over a question that I always ask, but you kind of filled it in a little bit, but I want to know your personal story briefly. How has your faith um affected your walk and your purpose in life? Now you've shared we shared what your purpose is. How did you start out that brought you to this place where you were like, okay, God, I'm listening. I'm reinventing myself at 48 and things are desperate things are you know over there, but I'm I'm putting in all my faith now, trusting in you, that this is what you want me to do. And I think this is very, this is very pivotal, listening to God because he wants you to be abundant. And if we can get people on board to say, man, I see your vision, I see the benefit of this, and I can, I'm in a position that can help you out. Um, we want to get them on board. So can you talk a little bit about your own journey, how you came to know the Lord, how you were able to have such strong faith that you threw it, threw it up in here and said, Okay, I'm here. You you put my put my toes in the water, God, you know, and then I'm gonna jump all the way in because I because I believe. So, can you talk a little bit about your your faith and how it affected your walk in your practice?

Um, I mean, one word that sums that up is obedient. When some some of a lot of this people are not obedient to a calling.

Um, how did you get to that place though?

SPEAKER_01 17:12

How did I get to that? Yeah, you go. So I grew up Catholic. I grew up Catholic, I went to an old boy school in the Bronx. Um, you know, we were a part of a Catholic church. We would go as an altar boy, you know. Um, during my high school years, I went away from that. We would go to church once, you know, Easter. I was big into the nightlife. Uh a big salserto. I used to love to go out and do salsa music. I had played Latin percussion. A lot of people don't know about that. So I used to play Latin percussion and and some and some drums. Um, but everything that came in with the nightlife, anything that happened after 12 o'clock, midnight to seven o'clock, you know, in the morning was not good. You know what I mean? With you know, the girls, the drinking, and everything that goes along with all that. Um, you know, then I was part of a more uh um the drum and bugle corps, and the guys were Christians, you know, those were two of the directors, and they said, you know, why don't you come to church with us? I said, bro, I get home at seven o'clock in the morning. I'm not going to church. You know what I mean? I'm going out, you know, I'm going to chill up. Yeah, you know. And he kept calling me. So I'm going to call you, he kept calling me. So one day I picked up and I said, I'm going to go to church, man. I'm just going to go to church. So he could stop calling me and I satisfied him. And uh that day I went to church and I was like, Oh, that's not bad. It was pretty cool. Um, he says, Come back next week. I said, All right. I came back next week, and then next thing you know, one week led to another week. You know, I stopped going to the clubs and just hanging out with the guys and brothers in church. Um, and then there was a message at church. Um, you know, the pastor at the end of the message said, Um, you know, the train of salvation is passing through here. The doors are gonna open. God is calling you on. Are you gonna get on this train? Or are you gonna let the doors close and let the train go? And man, it just gave me the chills. And I said, I'm getting on that train. I was 20 years old. Um, this was almost 28 years ago. Uh, got on that train. Um, after that, met my wife. We've been married 25 years. We have a 24 and a 21-year-old. Has the train derailed? Yes. Has the train had some trouble? Car engines throughout the yes, it's not easy. And the Lord said it's not gonna be easy.

At least not miraculously fixed, right? You're not gonna left it alone anymore.

You know, yeah, but that going through all that and going through your trials and tribulations has led me to this point. God has put me through um some serious trials and tribulations over time, uh, financially, uh, spiritually, um, you know, things that I wouldn't think I would never go through. And I'm like, Lord, why are you putting me through this? And it's to come to this point to say, trust me, have faith in me, walk in me, because I'm gonna call you now. And now I look back, you know, and some of the um in my small group, uh, a lady, um, I was a little nervous when I was gonna do my first pitch at my church. And she says, Why are you nervous? Cut it out. She goes, God has prepared you for this. We have you, the stories you have mentioned, you look back and your work history and everything you've done, you're you know, you know, what people call failures, but what God is saying, I'm gonna remove you for this. Let's see how you act, let's see how you how you how you trust me. Um, you know what I mean? I'm gonna provide, Lord, I need money now. Oh, you know, you have, and then boom, next thing you know, something comes up, and I'm like, wow, Lord. So over those you know, 20 plus years, you look back and like, wow, he's preparing me for this moment. Because living in the missionary field, missionaries live by faith. Yeah, you don't know when that next check is coming, you don't know when that next food is coming, you know, you're you're relying on the resources the Lord has put around you. And I'm like, okay, I'm ready. Um, so this past April, when I went out to Ohio, if you ever want to hear the Lord, go to the Midwest. There's no buildings, there's nothing nothing blocking. It's you and you get at the airport and it's just fields. I'm like, okay, yeah, Lord, you're gonna talk to me this weekend. And that's when I went out and stepped uh uh out into doing full-time ministry. But yeah, you know, that's my journey, you know. Like I said, it and it's it's no different than any, you know what I mean. You know, I I was a respectful girl. I had dad and mom still around, they're still around, you know. They, you know, they put um, you know, how to respect women, how to respect you know, ourselves and our families to me and my brother and my sister, and you know, and all the kids that are around. Um, so you know, I was fortunate for that. And I just always had a vision to give back, even at that early stage. I was fortunate to have parents around. I used to bring my friends, they didn't have dads um, you know, around and my I'm gonna cook for them and just hang out, you know. So it was since I was a kid, it was like installed in our in our DNA basically on how we should uh uh live and and be able to do that. And then when the Lord put this on my heart, I'm like, well, what better way? And again, then I asked myself, Lord, why? I'm not the best athlete. I probably can't dribble a basketball. I never played on a high school team or college team. I've coached high school, coach of varsity uh basketball, but coaching is different. You can learn the game, you can do the X's and no's and put in systems and stuff like that. I had some great mentors over the years who have taught me the game, but people ask me, and she goes, You started this for your boys, right? I was like, No, I have two girls. One plays soccer, the other one. You were you were a D1 athlete. I said, No, I had I didn't even play basketball, so you could tell it was just a vision and just a passion to get it going because it's you know, I feel like it was the easiest way to to to just not reinvent the will, just basketball, you need my basketball, and you need the word of God, and then everything that comes out now. The Lord has expanded his, and it was like, okay, Lord, you you you you you move, we're moving here, but you you know, we need help. But but yeah, hopefully that answers your question.

Yeah, um, that's a man, that is why we've called our uh podcast Men Walking in Faith and Purpose. You are the prime example of that, my friend. You have been propped up and groomed for this. You had a great foundation. Um, you've had a lot of life experience, which is I always say this you can be powerful if you learn it from a book, but you're more powerful if you actually actually live the life. So there was a time, and I'll be brief because I'm really resonating with your story and this test of faith you're going through. And I want to share mine briefly because I want you to be able to be able to keep going. When I was at my lowest point and thought maybe I'd been I'd been chosen to suffer, God whispered in my ear and he said, I'm gonna give you just enough. Only I was still operating in my own power. So I suffered because I didn't believe that. And I let it and I let it pass by me like a vapor and coming on the other side of the season. God had given me just enough, and I'm still here now, really living in my faith and purpose. So listen, man, listen, you got it figured out. It's hard to believe that on the other side of this, you're gonna live a life of abundance, but you're right where you're supposed to be. You've been the people you need to meet, right? You're getting more exposure, you're going to do this. You're the CEO, baby, and you're gonna do this. So, everybody who's watching and listening, I really hope you resonate with the story. So it's like basketball, you know, your assist leaders, you know, Magic Johnson, he was great at giving the ball up so others could have an opportunity. We're calling people, hey, make an assist, you know, help us out so we could give uh kids opportunities to hear the gospel and and be part of sports.
