"I can't be sinless, but I can sin less." — John Baitsell

📝Description:
What does it actually look like to live your faith instead of just talking about it? In this episode of Men Walking in Faith and Purpose, Steve Ramona and Chris Rushing sit down with John Baitsell — former stand-up comedian turned mentor — for an honest conversation about becoming a better man, one imperfect arrow at a time.

John doesn't pretend to have it figured out. He calls himself a lifelong seeker who spent years chasing the stage and the spotlight before realizing the real adventure was at home — as a husband, a father, and now a grandfather. What comes out is a raw, funny, and deeply grounded look at faith in action.

In this conversation:

  • Why John says his spiritual path stopped being a "side hustle" and became his true occupation
  • The archery metaphor that reframes sin — and why he's aiming for "more arrows on the paper"
  • What he learns sitting in Saturday morning Torah study with his Jewish brothers and sisters
  • How leaving comedy for fatherhood called forth parts of him he didn't know he had
  • Why marriage is a "form of constraint" that actually sets men free
  • The mission to stop multi-generational dysfunction and leave a legacy of love

PS: John is 62 and still talks about the version of himself five years down the road that he "hasn't met yet." That mindset — that God can call you to a new adventure at any age, the way He called Abraham late in life — is the heartbeat of this whole episode. If you've ever felt like your best chapter might already be behind you, this one's for you.

SPEAKER_00

Getting us getting us into a form restraint with marriage and and and uh focusing all of that energy in one direction, I think's incredibly helpful and healthy. And I for for for young men, our phones they they're just inundated with pornography and all kinds of bad messages. And I think it's it's really important to to come into a beautiful God-centered relationship with with a woman. I think it's one of the best things that ever happened to me. And I'm so blessed to have Christine in my life beyond belief. It's it's so wonderful. God put her in my life.

SPEAKER_01

We're so super excited. We got a guest today that we both know. Chris knows him very well. But uh talking about a guy walking in faith, uh, you're gonna learn a lot from him today. Chris, take her away.

SPEAKER_02

Oh man, what a blessing today to be here with you guys. John Batesel, a good friend of mine. Um, we've only known each other for a few months, but I believe we both made an impact in each other's life. And uh, I just feel I feel very honored to have you here, John, today. So thank you for thank you for giving us this time.

SPEAKER_00

Well, thank you. It's great to be here. I love to get together with with people who are oriented um on a similar path and and are willing and courageous and and take this life on. So I I look forward to hearing what comes out of this and what what we get to chew on and and how we we uh include God in this and uh what a gift it is to to have the logos and then to have a dialogos where with the uh the ultimate good is with us.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, yes. I have a question for you. I start I started the podcast with this question for all of our guests, being that it's called Men Walking in Faith and Purpose, and that is what we uh we both decided would be would be the best way to move forward um to share what we want to share and to and to and to impact uh whoever might be watching or listening to this. My question for you is how does your faith affect your daily walk as you um as you live in your purpose and as you pursue your purpose?

SPEAKER_00

Well, I I would say that my my daily walk is is really my primary what's the word I'm looking for, occupation. You know, I used to say my spiritual path, my interest, I'm a seeker, I've always been a seeker was my side hustle. But in reality, it's been it's been in the forefront of of my life, you know, dedicating my life to uh, well, to being of service and to to try to figure out what is happening here, you know, like what is this like? What is going on? Like I felt woefully unprepared for whatever this experience is, and and I wasn't surrounded by sane, loving people who could help transmit what might be important, you know, like mentors, and and so my journey has really become, you know, how do I get better at this? And and how do I continue to orient myself toward the ideal? I love to say that I can't I can't be sinless, but I can sin less. And so I I'm really dedicated to sinning less and um and and you know getting more arrows on the paper, you know, like because sinning is a is an archery term, and I really want to hit the bullseye as often as possible. I can't, I'm imperfect human. God Christ could zing arrows always into the right into the bullseye and probably run arrows right through the last arrow he threw in there, but mine are all over the paper. Yeah, and uh I do this very imperfectly, but I'm committed, like my life depends on it, and actually my eternal life depends on it. So I take it very seriously. I don't, I don't want to be like in in the recovery rooms, there are people who kind of are are dry drunks or not really working a program that they they're transformed, and I call them silver-tongue junkies, like they can talk and they can lay it out there, but are they what are they doing day in and day out? And the same thing I, you know, like somebody who who's great at the Bible and can and and you know, talk about scripture and but what's it look like on the court? And so I've really paid attention to what I'm doing on the court, you know, like really modeling the sanest behavior I can for my family. And I don't that's what I would say about that, you know. Talk is cheap.

SPEAKER_01

I can I can I love the talk is cheap. It's and I hate to use that for well, I don't hate, but that's kind of what you're saying. People say scripture and then they go and cheat on their wives, steal from the partner, you know, all that. Right.

SPEAKER_00

Or they don't get better and they continue to the it's like it's it's all patterns. Like I love the Bible. I I became more convinced of the truth of you know, like the true reality of scripture when when the patterns of ultimate reality reveal themselves to me. Like there's almost certain predictable futures for people who oh who are worshiping the wrong things or oriented in in an improper fashion, individuals and society, and and these patterns play out over time. That book's as relevant today as it's it's the the the brilliance and the genius with every word of it, it just goes beyond belief. And um, and I really want to model the sanest behavior, you know, like I want to model the best behavior, I want to be a good, loving, humble man who's doing the best he can.

SPEAKER_02

I and every time you and I have spoken, um it this this topic, I feel like it always comes up because you are actively searching, you are actively working to get better, you are pulling the bow, whether or not you hit the bullseye, right? You're drawing the bow. I've actually had the opportunity when we first met, um, we had a coffee appointment and I screwed up the time. And he's a no-nonsense guy. He's like, Listen, man, you screwed up, so I'm gonna give you one more chance. And he invited me to a temple in his neighborhood up by Bedford, right? Bedford, New York.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And we went and had it sat through a Torah class, and it was it was insightful because seeing seeing a uh you know, a faction of people who who bel from the area we're talking about, right, where the origin of the Bible, the origin of Christianity is where Jesus actually walked, um, but believe something, you know, their own their own version of this, to learn that, to search and to seek without passing judgment and just absorbing everything for me was very impactful. And I know that he does this, he does this daily, well, weekly, I would say, probably, right, John.

SPEAKER_00

Um, I go to tour, study Saturday morning, hang out with my my Jewish brothers and sisters. They ask me a lot of Christian questions, and I do the best I can. And and I also, you know, like I really root for them. You know what I mean? Like they're the soil, and and I think we're the we're the flower, or you could say they're you know, the the the caterpillar that went into the chrysalis and Christianity's the butterfly. And I sit there and listen and I learn, and that there's a lot of chewing on it. You know, they love to to look at the words and the Hebrew and and and they're they study the same thing over and over again, year after year, and and to be in a space with people who are so dedicated to their faith, and and it's what we were, it's what Jesus was. And and I love get Genesis and Exodus and all the books of of the Old Testament. And the more I know, the again, the more convinced I am that you know, yeah, Exodus and Jen, they tell the story of the true reality of what this is on this planet, and and it's to be a paid attention to. And I really love it. I love it. I have a lot of reverence for it, and they always bring me fruit cup because I don't need a bagel of cream cheese, you know. They take care, they take care of the goy, you know. Anyway, it's a blessing to me, and I know they love me there, and and um, it's another place where you know we can learn and grow. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I agree. Um, it was very impactful for me to to be able to witness that. And I want to do that with instead of arguing, we're so predisposed these days to argue with people because we don't understand them, instead of actually listening, going in, figuring them out. What do you think? Let's share, let's share as adults, you know, let's share together. Um, I think that's the humanity. Let's break bread. Let's break bread, let's talk because we have more in common, I think, than we do. Um what's the now? What's the word I'm looking for? We have more in common than we don't. You know what I mean? People. We we we love family, we have rites of passage, um, we love to get together and we love life. And I feel like that's that the you know you know, religion can be the divider or it can be a connector based on you know coming together and really talking, really talking about things and discussing why do we believe what we believe. And I feel like we find a lot of commonality in that. Can you touch on you? We were a comedian, I don't know if you're still doing it, but you almost did at the men's retreat we were at, and that that would have been they censored me, they wouldn't let me do it.

SPEAKER_00

They were too scared to cut me loose. I heard I rode with you and I heard what the material was gonna be, and I was ready, ready to stay close to the door. I was too scared myself, thank God I'd been I'd have been excommunicated. Maybe I would have it would have been fun, you know. Well, touch on that a little bit, will you?

SPEAKER_02

Like, what was the life like and did that affect you um as you were starting to search or look for how to be a better, better man to be a you know Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

That's I I think that my journey is really about you know coming into my own as a man, you know, and I and I grew up in a in a in an environment where I wasn't allowed to be fully self-expressed. You know, there's like you you when when you when you when you have authority figures that are that then like the people that are accountable and in charge of you, and and they're threatened by your language, or they're threatened by like who you fundamentally are, or they maybe not even know who you are at all, and they want to stick you in places and they want to put up, you know, do not enter signs. And and I think for me, um living in that oppressing uh oppression, I would say, or a lot of sh excuse me, a lot of shaming and and making wrong. I got into acting and into to comedy because I really wanted to explore my voice and get to know myself better and see what I'm capable of and scare myself a little bit. Like it's challenging to get up in front of a group of you know, hundreds and and uh and and you know, and and with a purpose of entertaining them. And um, it was really great for my confidence, for my self-expression. I happen to be pretty good at it. Uh and it gave me experiences. I I met people, it was part of my adventure. You know, like one of the things I always talk to my sons about is this life is supposed to be an adventure. This life well lived is supposed to be an adventure. And I love to think about Abraham. I'm 62, and some of the some of the Bible guys got called to their adventure really late in life. And so that brings me excitement and hope and and and know that the reality is God's gonna call us at any time. It really doesn't know it doesn't matter how old you are, you know, you get the call. So comedy was about my self-expression, it was about building confidence, it was about finding my voice and and being in front of people and and entertaining them. And I had so much fun, I learned a lot. Uh the the good part of it was that I think the reason I stopped, there was a bit of it was a bit of a narcissistic um kind of riches and fame development deal, Hollywood interest in, you know, like and um the thing was I I had an adopted son, an older son. And then when my biological son showed up, I didn't want to be in the middle of, you know, Pennsylvania in Altoona performing for 150 drunk people who were smoking SIGs and being in some hotel that was, you know, like looked like a drug deal was ready to go on. And I sat at the end of my bed. I was like, well, okay, this this ran its course. You know, I I want to I want to be a a guy who's around for his kids, and I started a company, and then I I I ran for almost 20 years. And so that that's part of my journey. But that whole performance business, I love being with an audience, I love being on stage, and uh there were other aspects of it that that didn't work over time, but what a part of my story and a lot of fun.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and John, your audience has changed, which is powerful. You take your ministry, but I gotta say something about Abraham. Like Abraham, I don't know if I'd have children at 90 years old.

SPEAKER_02

Well I got them now.

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. I don't have children, but once you said that, I thought about that.

SPEAKER_00

Like, maybe we'll see how healthcare goes, but it's a great sacrifice having a kid, having is is like some of us never grow up till we have kids, you know. And uh having sons was about the best thing that ever happened to me. Um, it really called for something, you know, change, sacrifice, you know, that's what Christianity is. It's voluntary self-sacrifice, and the sacrifice being a dad, a father, of getting married, which is a form of constraint, and uh it gives us freedom to experience and it also like literally on a cellular level, I think it calls forth parts of us that we don't even know we have. Like getting on stage in front of a lot of people, and you know, it called for something. Uh being a father called for something, getting married called for something. My son's in New Zealand till June, playing rugby and traveling the traveling the uh the whole country, and it's calling forth something, and he's not the same person literally in every sense of the word, and it it broadens and evolves us. I think it's good to just like throw our kids into the deep end and then throw ourselves into the deep end, whatever that means, whether it's a podcast or a book, like like Chris, you wrote a book or whatever, or starting a new relationship, getting ourselves testing ourselves and not just resting on on whatever we're up to and continuing to be vulnerable and and run out there into the great. You know, it's great, you know, like we talk about knocking the door all open and asking we will receive, you know, that's all part of it. It's part of it going up. And I've talked to Chris about this before. There's a there's a John out there five years from now I haven't met yet, and who knows what that could be. Who knows what that guy could be? The skill set that he could have, or the language, or the ability to to be a real um God-loving person who can transmit what's important for for other people to hear, you know. That's that's an opportunity I hear. Like I led Bible study on Thursday. I'd never I'd done that kind of before, but Gad actually asked me to do it, and I took it seriously. It was a privilege for me. And I did it. I did my homework, I printed something up, I put a little artwork on it, made it beautiful, like trying to make it pretty, and and uh, you know, what you do good, and it was such uh, especially as as a man myself, and I shared that morning.

SPEAKER_02

I was having a rough morning because I am still looking for my purpose, you know. I'm I I'm I'm searching and asking and and trying to do whatever I can to put myself in that position that God wants me to be in. And I was having a rough morning, and we talk about daily manna like how do we feed ourselves so that we can continue this path as we go, you know, as we go, because I'm excited about the the the you know the the version of me five years down the road as well. And going to that men's that men's breakfast Bible study and not being a martyr and trying to suffer alone was was very impactful. And me knowing you and knowing what you put, the effort you put into everything you do, made that even more powerful for me. And I didn't realize how much I needed it until I went there. And you might have noticed I didn't share much, I was just kind of soaking it all in. At the end, I did share what I had learned from all my brothers of all different ages and you know, different different lengths of their time in their in their walk in faith. And the things that I collected from that is exactly what I needed. And so while I chose my words wisely, what came out of my mouth, I was I was very happy with because I actually showed up and went there, and I and it was it was very much in part of the energy and the commitment you put into the things that you do. So I thanked you then, but I'll thank you again for that.

SPEAKER_00

And I brother, I see you sitting over there listening. You know, you listen to you. And then man, when I tell you what, when your lips start moving, everybody's paying attention because you know what comes out is is thoughtful and and introspective and honest and truthful, and you're you know, you're seeking, you're seeking, and and uh you get to put words to it, and and like you said, we're all in this together. This is like really something, this life, it's not for babies. Oh the experiences keep coming, and then how do we take the next right action? And and where do we get good orderly direction from, which is god. Where do we get good orderly direction from, and how do we pay attention? And I I was snoodling on the truth like these last couple days. Like the truth, like I love the notion, you know, Jesus says he's the truth, the light, the the way in the life, and the truth doesn't uh bend or sway or negotiate, or you know, it doesn't pollute or offer a softer, easier way, or or convoluted mumbo jumbo. That's the that's the devil's game. And and uh the more I hang around, the more interested I am in in the truth because I just love its unwavering unquestionable reality. And I think Christianity is the best project for figuring it out. With it's not even close. And and there's some projects that are that are worthy of our attention in terms of of growth and opportunity. Like I've dug a lot of holes and I learned a lot along the way. And then I I think there are other projects that probably aren't such a good project, but um, you know, we're here and and we get a chance to to hang out and uh and get better, and that's exciting, and become more grateful. Yeah, yeah, grateful and humble. Humble. I love C.S. Lewis. I you know, now I don't want to think of myself less of myself, I want to think of other people more, and I really love that as some really good marching orders.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and I gotta ask, your journey looks like it was led through John Lennon because you got those. If you listen to the podcast, the pictures behind them are different John Lennon pictures.

SPEAKER_00

Well, that's all the Beatles.

SPEAKER_01

It's all the Beatles, okay. So you know what I mean? But that's there for a reason. That part of your journey, the Beatles.

SPEAKER_00

That's my wife's journey. Okay, I got married to a uh a music lover who drags me to all these shows, and I tell you, man, oh man, it's it it's like I love to people watch, and what shows up to some of these live band jam band shows, I you know, it's it's amazing to me. I do love music. Music speaks to me. I love music. Music for me opens doors and windows every morning. I listen, I like can I light a candle, I light three candles every morning for the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And then I'll put on some Greek Orthodox Christian music or some Mormon tabernacle choir, or you know, I I think that we it's important to have reverence for what's beautiful and and music and being out in nature and and beautiful sanctuaries, you know, churches, cathedrals before postmodernism and came around and started throwing up concrete uh monstrosities that aren't pretty to look at. I I really beauty scares people, and there's a real beautiful aspect of Christianity and the faith and and the uh the things that we do in church, and so mu music, and and part of the thing, part of the attraction uh for the church that we go to was the music.

SPEAKER_01

So I agree. So yeah, do you you have to walk your wife's journey too? I do the same thing. She's got me into music. I've never been really I like music, but not into it. She is, you know. And I agree. We have to walk on our spouse's or our family or community's journey too and help with their journey, not just be it all about us. Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, that's the beauty. Like men is part of the blessing of finding that partner, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, right. That's right, Chris. I think men are better married. We we need a form of constraint, you know, like it frees us up, it opens up, and I mean it's a sacrifice, it means we're not gonna have sex with any other women, and uh, you know, I'm not talking about being a hedonistic, you know, sacrificing the future for the present moment kind of guy. I, you know, there was a time in my life where I would say I wasn't always operating in in a loving way when it came to um my my sexual uh I guess what I was up to out in the world, and and I I think about that now and I I'm I'm repentant over it, but getting us getting us into a form of strength with marriage and and and uh focusing all of that energy in one direction, I think's incredibly helpful and healthy. And I

SPEAKER_02

for for for young men our phones they they're just inundated with pornography and all kinds of bad messages and i think it's it's really important to to come into a beautiful god centered relationship with with a woman i think it's the one of the best things that ever happened to me and i'm so blessed to have christine in my life beyond belief it's it's so wonderful god put her in my life 100 beautiful message beautiful message we're coming to the end here chris the end yeah we do a we just a half hour and you're going long let's go what are we doing i have well you when you and i spoke the other day you mentioned as a christian man uh your purpose was to lead your family make memories with your kids grandkids travel make everyone know that they're loved can we uh can we touch on that as we bring this to a close um you're very out you're such an interesting guy man and there's so many things we would love to talk about and we'd love to have you back on here and focus on some of the other aspects of your life but this one really really touched me because and made me think because I believe in the same thing if you're gonna be a leader in your life you're gonna be a leader in your family you're going to leave a legacy and affect your lineage so to speak your example is what you leave behind that they take take forward into their lives as leaders as as women of faith as men of faith and so you mentioned that the other day and could you touch on that you you talked about your purpose to lead your family and make memories and make sure everyone's loved yeah that look like I take that very seriously you know the Bible talks all about um when you're oriented properly you treat life like an adventure and and you listen to God and you you move toward God it it the promises are you'll be known and what you do will be pushed down generations and so in in some of my work or my writings I'm very open about what I got in in my you know in in the line of people that I come from in terms of just complete dysfunction you know violence uh addiction lots of unhealthy behaviors very bad strategies for long-term success in terms of how to behave and what to do or what not to do and and so that's dumped on us and that's part of why I've paid so much attention is what I want to push is something you know to stop multi-generational dysfunction I think is a big part of of what we're supposed to do.

SPEAKER_00

And I've taken that very seriously I don't I I didn't want to cause that you know like who knows what my sons will put well I know what my sons are pushing downstream but or what's flowing downstream and out generations of people I I want to be a source of you know loving patriarchy of of managing my emotions of of being very transparent responsibly as the patriarch of the family but certainly willing to talk about my life and and where I wasn't perfect. I have not been perfect at this and and really be straight in my communication but also we talked before like to have integrity and to be your word because that's that's what we that's what that's all we have. You know first was the word and and what we birthed from here and and and how we show up and and our listening and and paying attention and all the touch points we have I FaceTime everybody all the time. Maybe they're not always so interested in seeing me again but my grandkids know that they love me and my kids know they love me and my wife my daughter in love I call her is just such a beautiful soul and we're planning a trip we're gonna go somewhere warm over the holidays and maybe rent an Airbnb on the water somewhere in Florida or go to you know Amelia Island and hang out at a resort and spend a few shekels but it's worth every second to memory build and and I've whispered in my grandkids' ears their whole life like I I've told them something like you know I'm always gonna listen to you you know I'm always gonna let you know you're loved and um I'm always gonna be here and and support you in whatever way I can you know that makes sense to you I've been whispering that in their ears since they were babies and uh it uh being a grandparent's a good deal when they call me Papa I get them like right now I'm emotional even talking about them. It's uh that's something you know when these two little wives want to hang out with you and show you stuff. Papa look what I can do.

SPEAKER_01

I'm like show me everything you know or I have a question around this is what I think and you know knowing their preferences and and uh letting them know their love that's what we're here for and I like to think that I I would give myself a pretty good grade on it and uh an audience and Chris I and John I got to say this before we close that generational legacy used a different word is powerful because we forget that how Steve Chris and John living our life today how's it going to affect 30 years from now 50 years from now 100 years from now we start that today and through the Bible and through God gets us to a better generational legacy I'm gonna borrow that and share that out as I mentor people because it Chris that's powerful.
