The Holy Spirit is not optional for the believer. He is our Helper, Guide, Teacher, and the One who reveals the calling and assignment God has written over our lives.

Hey guys, this is Major Henry Hastings, and welcome to the SMC podcast: Restoring Biblical Masculinity by Raising Up Modern Day Minutemen in the natural and spiritual realms. This is where we tackle real issues men face from leadership and purity to history, spiritual warfare, and discerning the times at hand like the sons of Issachar. So you can stand in the gap at a moment's notice. Let's get into it. All right, guys, our scriptural anchor for today is 2 Corinthians 5 17. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new. When we are born again through faith in Christ Jesus, we become a new spiritual species. That's what new creation is in the Greek. And the word conveys a never seen before you. I don't know about you, but when I was saved, I was 27 years old, and everything changed for me. It was like I had been given a new set of eyes. Everything was different. What I didn't understand is there was a new way of life, a new way to live beyond being moral, and it was living by the Spirit. There are four commands in the New Testament for the believer that really sum up the spiritual life as a new creation, living under a new covenant. And they reveal the supernatural dynamics of the spiritual life. These really changed my life. The first comes from Ephesians 4 30, grieve not the spirit. The verse says, And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. The immediate context in Galatians of this verse is talking about putting away all types of sin. So sin grieves the spirit. So this is a command not to sin. How are we able not to sin is revealed in the second command in Galatians 5 16. Walk by the Spirit, I say, and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. This is a powerful passage because it's communicating that there's not even a possibility of fulfilling the desires of the flesh when we're walking by the spirit. The Greek construction is called the subjunctive of emphatic negation. It's translated, you will not fulfill. This type of negation removes even the possibility for the flesh to be fulfilled when you're walking by the spirit. What is walking? Well, walking is analogous to faith, trust, or dependence because every time you take a step, you're breaking a fall. This requires faith when you simply put one foot in front of the other because you're trusting in that foot to break a fall. It's really simple. So it's the same when we walk by the Spirit. We're simply trusting the Holy Spirit every step of the way in our spiritual life. This is the key to victory over temptation. And pretty soon we have a lifestyle that's characterized by dependence upon the Holy Spirit. And that brings us to our third command out of 1 Thessalonians 5.19. Do not quench the Spirit. The word quench is spinumi in the Greek, which means to extinguish or suppress. This is analogous to forbidding the manifestations of the Holy Spirit or refusing to follow the Spirit when He's leading you. He tells you to go right, you go left. So the bottom line here is you're suppressing what the Holy Spirit's doing. The fourth command reveals how not to suppress the Spirit, and it's found in Galatians 5.25. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. The verb to walk in this passage is different, though, from the command to walk by the Spirit back in Galatians 5.16. In this passage, to walk is stoiko in the Greek. This is a military term, and it means to march in formation. Well, as a military guy, when you march in formation, you're marching in columns. So there's someone in front of you. And if you don't listen to the cadence, you'll trip on the person's feet in front of you. The English standard version of this passage translated, let us keep in step with the Spirit. To do that, we have to yield to the cadence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. So the power and dynamics of the supernatural life of the believer who's under a new creation is summed up in four commands. Grieve not, walk by, quench not, keep in step. So, Father, thank you. I ask that you would teach each and every man listening to this the Spirit's ways with them. Show them how to be led by your spirit and to give us sensitivity to the Spirit so we can listen to your cadence and keep in step with what he's doing in our lives. In Jesus' name, amen. Now, guys, I just have something extra here for you. If you like I was as kind of a fundamentalist for a majority of my Christian life before I received the filling of the Holy Spirit, I thought I could only pray to God the Father, and it had to be in Jesus' name. But I was kind of also under a time where it was, you know, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Bible. I didn't really know the Spirit. What I knew about the Holy Spirit was on paper. But as I began to study what the Holy Spirit was sent to do in our lives, I realized that if I had walked with Paul or Timothy or Titus or James or Peter for any amount of time, they would have said, you're not filled with the Spirit. But when I got filled with the Holy Spirit, it completely changed my life. And then these commands came to life. So if you feel you're in the same boat, I want you to be able to get out of the boat because it's the difference of being in the boat and walking on the water. Start asking the Holy Spirit to reveal himself to you. If you're not comfortable with speaking to the Holy Spirit, and you really should be, ask the Father to create in you a sensitivity to his spirit first. And then conduct what I call a SILS. Every time we would jump out of airplanes on an operation, we gather our shoot and we just sit still. And we conduct this thing called SILS. Silence, look, listen, and smell. We're adjusting to the environment. We're completely silent to hear what's going on around us. We're looking, eyes open, the eyes are adjusting to darkness. We're looking around, we're listening, and we're smelling the environment. We're completely adjusting to it. So we're sensing. So begin to do this after you ask the Father to give you sensitivity to the spirit, sensitivity to the spirit's ways with you. And when Jesus told the disciples that he was going to give them another helper, that word another, which is a loss in the Greek, means another of the same kind. In other words, the Holy Spirit was going to show up and take over the things that Jesus had done in their lives. What did Jesus do? He led them, he taught them, he corrected them, he spoke to them. And there are actual passages in the New Testament where it says the Holy Spirit forbade us to go into Ephesus. That's part of leading. If he redirects your path to another place, then he's that's part of his leading process. And then it says, the Holy Spirit told us this or revealed this. So nothing's changed since the book of Acts. It's the same spiritual life that's been given to you today. And if the disciples had conversations with Jesus and Jesus said he was sending you another helper to do the same thing in our lives as he did the disciples' lives, why wouldn't you start talking to the Spirit of God? He's with you. Whether you're aware of his presence or not, so ask him to make himself known, to lead you in the way of God, so you can fulfill the scroll that the Father wrote about your life in heaven. And only the Father knows that plan. Ephesians 2 10 says, We were created, we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared for us beforehand, before you even came into the world. God wrote a scroll that is in the book about you, and the plans are revealed in that scroll. Who better to ask to reveal that plan to you so you can walk in the fullness of your calling than the Holy Spirit, the one who's been sent to lead you and to guide you in the plan that God has for your life? It's not by might, it's not by power, but it's by the Spirit that we must do everything in this life. We can't walk by faith and rely on our own understanding. We must walk by faith, not by sight.
