God qualifies the called

Too often, we think we need to have it all together before God can use us. But throughout Scripture, God chose ordinary men and prepared them for extraordinary assignments.

David didn't step onto the battlefield against Goliath without preparation. Long before the giant, there was the pasture. It was in the hidden places faithfully tending sheep that forged the character and courage David would need for public victory.

The same is true for us. The private battles no one sees are often preparing us for the public victories everyone notices.

Obedience in obscurity is the forge of authority. It is where God develops faithfulness, humility, and dependence on Him. Before He entrusts greater influence, He shapes the heart of the man who will carry it.

Don't despise the hidden season. God is at work there.

Stay faithful in the pasture, and trust God with the giants. ✝️🔥

Hey guys, this is Major Henry Hastings, and welcome to the SMC podcast: Restoring Biblical Masculinity by Raising Up Modern Day Minutemen in the natural and spiritual realms. All right, guys, our scriptural anchor is blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle, my loving kindness and my fortress, my high tower and my deliverer, my shield, and the one in whom I take refuge, who subdues my people under me. Psalm 144, 1 and 2. If you've attended SMC and graduated, you've memorized that Psalm. Men love the language of strength. We talk about battle, discipline, and readiness, but David reminds us true strength is never self-taught. The same man who killed giants first learned to be trained by God. Blessed be the Lord my rock who trains my hands for war. Before David ever drew his sword on the battlefield, he learned to draw his strength from the Lord. He wasn't glorifying violence. He was glorifying the one who shapes warriors. God doesn't recruit the qualified, he qualifies the recruited. Think on that for a minute. David didn't start in an armory. He didn't start at basic training. He started in a pasture. He learned to fight off lions and bears long before he faced Goliath. That's the pattern. Private battles prepare you for public victories. Maybe your pasture right now is your home, your work, or your inner life. If you'll let God train your hands there, he'll trust you with greater ground later. So obedience and obscurity is the forge of authority. David says, Blessed be the Lord my rock, before a man can fight, listen here, he must stand on something solid. That's the rock. The world tells men to build confidence on performance, but that foundation crumbles. Only those standing on the rock, on Christ, remain unshaken when the field turns to fire. So strength without foundation is fragility in disguise. Notice the precision here of his hands and fingers being trained. Hands speak of overall readiness, fingers speak of skill and detail. God doesn't just make warriors tough, he makes them trained. For the SMC tribe, that means physical readiness, mental clarity, and spiritual discipline all working together. The man who can control his weapon and his temper is a man under command. A warrior without restraint is just a man with a sword. But a warrior under the spirit's control is a weapon in God's hand. David's language is both tactical and relational here. A fortress protects you from what's outside. A shield deflects what's aimed at you. God is both defense and refuge. Real warriors aren't fearless. They just know where to turn when the arrows start flying. They retreat into their commander, not away from the fight. So courage isn't the absence of fear, it's trust in the presence of God. Gentlemen, Psalm 144 isn't just history, it's a training manual. Every verse is a reminder that God still shapes modern day warriors, men who defend their homes and faith, men who fight temptation as fiercely as enemies, men who lead, protect, and build under divine command. If you've been in a season of pressure, maybe God isn't punishing you. He's teaching your hands for war, your fingers for battle, your heart for obedience. The proving ground always comes before the promotion ground. Guys, it's time to let the commander train you again. Lay down self-reliance, pick up discipline, learn the cadence of his command. He will toughen your hands, sharpen your instincts, and steady your aim. So that when you stand in the gap for your family, your church, or your nation, you stand as one trained by God Himself.
