Are you getting senior discounts or refusing to admit that you qualify for them? Do you wonder where your car is parked in a full parking lot? A recent event that happened to us? Then this podcast is for you. We are going to look at the life and the ages and stages of the over 60 set and remind each other that we're not finished yet. We are not alone and we are still having fun.
PaigeThat's right. There's lots to learn and lots to do. There's also joy in the journey, which we will highlight. So join us as we talk about these later decades and their good surprises.
BeeWelcome to our first podcast episode. We won't mention how many takes. And we are starting in 2026 to kick off our New Year's resolution to push ourselves to accomplish our new goals, have fun, and keep moving forward. Hi, I am Beatrix Kind. Yes, yes, my nickname is Bee, so my parents did have a mission. I'm B kind.
PaigeYes, and I'm Paige, Paige Turner, encouraging everyone to embrace the next page and the new journeys and new chapters in life and look at the good things they bring.
BeeSo Paige and I have been friends since second grade. And we have tripped past the age of 60, and we want to share thoughts, laughter, possible challenges and solutions, and talk about dancing into the later decades.
PaigeAnd we're determined to continue to enjoy life. If we have a few changes along the way, well, we can certainly do that better together.
BeeWe certainly can. So let's start with an example of things we notice. And by the way, these observations are not usually limited to people just over 60. I think many people are going to relate to these. Obviously, a top item of discussion is technology. Not only is technology constantly changing, have you noticed that once you get the hang of something and you're really doing it well and you're feeling really good about it, someone in the tech world decides they can supposedly make it better. I definitely am questioning that philosophy.
PaigeI know. One example is my phone. It wanted to update, and I was certainly fine with that older version, but apparently the new one was better. So to ensure I understood all the full capabilities, I went online and researched it to see what the changes were. And there was an overwhelming amount of information, and it talked about obvious changes and apparently some really cool ones that I hadn't heard of yet. Yes.
BeeAnd so I watched a video because I knew that Paige had already tried doing what she had, because I thought that would be easier. Well, the video was going so fast, I tried to pause it. Well, then the next thing that happens is these advertisements came up. So I'm kind of waiting through the advertisements. I don't see a skip. So I think, okay, I have to start over. So I start over. Once again, he's going too fast, so I can't even figure out where it is on my phone. I pause it. The advertisements come up. Anyway, to make a long story longer, I was in a vicious circle, and in the end, there was no way for me to stop the video and try to comprehend what they were pointing out without starting over every time. I'm sure there is a way to do it, but I couldn't figure it out. So I gave up. A response that maybe others of you have had in dealing with trying to get into something techie in this world.
PaigeI know. And as far as the phone, it's gonna add insult to injury. When I selected agree, which I did with fear and trepidation, of course, to update that phone. It told me my phone didn't support the new version. I was back to square one.
BeeThat is so typical. And now AI hasn't really made it any better yet. And I'm concerned about what's going forward. Um, I got a text from Amy from the Roofers Company asking me if she could help. She happened to be in my neighborhood. Well, then a little later that day, I got a text from Amy from the painting company. She wanted to know if she's in the neighborhood. Can she help? Uh, all I can say is Amy is a very busy woman, and I did question whether this was maybe a popular name that now AI has decided sounds like it's reliable.
PaigeOh, I think that's funny. And you know what I read the other day, which makes me laugh, is that parents are adding landlines back into their homes. They say it teaches their children manners and they have to tell them how to ask and request for the person they want to speak with and how to answer the phone. It's just great. Things we knew shouldn't have been perhaps taken away are now coming back and having a useful life once again.
BeeOf course, I do have to jump in here because I did just get rid of my landline, not like five months ago because it got so expensive and now they're coming back.
PaigeYou know, our philosophy is to keep trying, even if it's one step at a time, whether it's technology or something else. There are resources out there to help us, and the baby boomers are now one of the largest generations. I believe we're at 20% of the population. We are not alone.
BeeWe are definitely not alone, even though at times it truly may feel like that. And that's one of the reasons we wanted to do this podcast. We want to reach out to people who may be housebound, are lonely, or doing exercises and want to listen to something fun while they're doing them. Our podcast is not incredible yet, but it will be. And we are here to talk about how we feel about all sorts of topics that hopefully interest you.
PaigeThat's right. You know, we listen to podcasts, and it's been wonderful. I think that's again something that technology brought us that we really appreciate. We learn new topics, we feel like we're part of a certain community with common interests. It's just a great way to learn, laugh, and grow.
BeeYeah, that is so true. And another little twist on the technology topic, uh, that I truly feel everybody can agree with. Simple things that have turned complicated in the new world of automated everything. So I was standing in line at the airport, and of course it's a long line, because you know, we women always get the long line, and we're standing in front of the sinks, my part of the line, because I'm at the end, and I'm watching this young woman in her 30s trying to turn on the faucet. She holds her hand under very confidently at first. Well, hmm. Then she kind of waves it over it, kind of looking for the screen that she must be needing. Now she's looking physically under the sink to see if there's something. And I say, you know, isn't that frustrating? Really, if it just had a handle, it would be so easy. Well, she started laughing, and everyone else in the line started laughing as well. I'm telling you, it was funny because it was a bonding experience between all the women. It's a common problem we all have. We can't figure out what is the newest tech and how does it work.
PaigeYes, you know, as an older generation, we can remember so many simple things that now feel very overcomplicated. And yet some things are definitely better. We're gonna agree on that. But others are a combination of improved and wow, did we really need that? Do you remember having only three TV channels?
BeeI definitely remember that.
PaigeThat seems so limiting now, and we enjoy having those choices, but it was really somehow unifying. If you remember everybody gathering on the same night to watch The Wizard of Oz, because it was only broadcast once a year, and then we all talked about it the next day. Now we have to subscribe to several streaming services, and by the way, in my opinion, there are far too many shopping channels.
BeeThere are, and I also remember in simplifying, let's get to the workplace now. In the workplace, they simplified by replacing our word processing staff and giving everyone computers, saying, now you can type your own documents and save time. Well, we all discussed how does that save us time? Wait a minute. I see how it saves the company money, but I'm a little confused on how it saves us time. Let me just say, to put it nicely, our lives became much fuller when they gave us that simplified solution.
PaigeYes. Hey, there's another trend that I think is really fascinating. It's the return of vinyl records. Oh, I'm loving that this trend's coming back. I know. I have quite a collection of original ones in my garage. It represents, I think, how people today want something they can hold in their hands and own. And it's just not depending on the digital content with the possibility of, say, a copyright removing access. Now, once again, sometimes technology might not be the best choice. But what's good is we can consider what's available and with the right knowledge, choose for ourselves. And the wisdom of our experience often benefits us.
BeeSo true. So, in addition to the technology topics, which obviously that can go on unlimited, going forward, our episodes will include a myriad of topics like medical updates for seniors. Now, we are absolutely not doctors, if you can tell, but we are all experiencing some physical surprises as we age, and we'll discuss general information that may be useful. A women talk to women, so you know you really learn a lot from somebody else who's been through the same experience. And again, of course, we're going to have some laughs.
PaigeYes, we're also going to focus on some fun, new, useful life tips, maybe some activity recommendations to stay connected, maybe some good books to read, including audible books, because, well, there are those of us who may find that small print a bit more challenging than we used to. And I recently ordered one of those page magnifiers, has the lights around it. It's great. And judging from the large number of options and reviews, I'm not the only one struggling to read that small print. Hey, you know, I should get one of those.
BeeActually, I don't have one yet. So this podcast is all about us. And by us, we mean you, our audience, whom we are going to call Thrivers. And we've created an email, and it's all one word, no spaces, no anything in between. Thrivers are kind at gmail.com. So if you hear this and actually think, hey, you like it or want to give some advice, please send us an email.
PaigeWe'd love that. You know, we're people who recognize there's a lot of life to enjoy. There are ways now to give back that weren't available earlier, and there's choices for connection, which is so important. We're going to learn how to navigate our constantly changing world by helping each other.
BeeAbsolutely. And we want to stay relevant and be active with all ages. As we love to say our well-known quote, Paige and I say, Don't let the old woman in.
PaigeYes. And we plan to have fun. This is not a political discussion or forum. There are plenty of those. We want to enjoy life and share the enjoyment with you. Each episode will be no more than 30 minutes, so you can easily try to exercise, go for a walk, maybe run some errands, or just relax while you're listening. We will aim for two episodes a month.
BeeAnd of course, this episode is a little shorter than our future episodes, we believe. A because it's an introduction, and we just wanted you to meet us and kind of know what our mission is. And we will always end the episodes with two questions. Question number one how will you be kind today?
PaigeThat's a great one and a great reminder. And question number two What's something new you can learn as each life page turns?
BeeAnd that's a good one because it makes us push ourselves. So my be kind for the day is to call my friend who I haven't talked to in quite a while. I've been thinking of her, and I think we'll have a fun conversation, and it hopefully we'll make her day.
PaigeI love that. And my page turner tip is not one you haven't heard of, but one that I need to do, and that's to clean out my closet. I have so many things that I've hung on to, and it and it tends to make make it heavy. I'm just gonna lighten up and give those items to people who can use them. That's a great idea. Um, you know what? I do want to remind our thrivers to please subscribe to this free podcast, Thrive at 65. We don't want you to miss our next episode, and we look forward to hearing from you.
