Welcome to Kids Chapter Check-Ins, a space where we pause, think, talk, and write about great books together. Books are better together. So grab your book and let's check in. Hey readers, welcome. Today we're checking in on The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies. This is episode three of the Lemonade War series. Before we get started, make sure that you've read chapters 7 through 9. If not, you can pause the episode, read those chapters, and come right back. It might be helpful to have your book and some paper handy for this episode. If you're using your companion pack, now is a great time to grab that too. Take a moment to gather everything you need, and then we'll get started. Ready? Let's check in. The Lemonade War continues in chapters 7 through 9. Both Jesse and Evan are trying new strategies to try to win. Evan decides to sell his lemonade on the town lawn, but a police officer tells him he needs to get a special permit. Meanwhile, Jesse is recruiting several third-grade girls to help run multiple lemonade stands at the same time. At one point, Evan considers calling off the war entirely, but he changes his mind because he doesn't want his friends to think that he lost to his little sister. Let's pause for a vocabulary check-in. In today's reading, we hear the word persistent. Persistent is an adjective that means you keep trying even when something is hard or doesn't work the first time. An athlete shows persistence by practicing over and over until they master a new skill. A dog might be persistent if it keeps trying to tear apart its favorite stuffed animal. Can you think of something that you have been persistent in doing? Now let's take a moment to check your understanding. You'll hear three questions about the word persistent. Listen to each one and answer yes or no. You can answer out loud or in your head. Are you ready? Is someone persistent if they keep practicing basketball until they make a basket? Is someone persistent if they quit playing the piano after the first week because it's too hard? Is someone persistent if they stop reading a book when they find a word they don't know? If you said yes, no, no, great thinking. It's time for our reading focus. Today we're going to think about point of view. Point of view is the way that the characters think, feel, and see what is happening. Two people or two characters can experience the very same event and have completely different points of view. You've probably experienced this yourself. Maybe your favorite food is pizza, but your sister really dislikes it. Imagine the difference in your point of view on pizza night. You'd be excited for pizza night because you love pizza. It's your favorite. But your sister, she might be complaining because she doesn't like pizza. It's the same event, but you're experiencing different points of view. Or imagine a trip to a theme park. You might be afraid of roller coasters and your friend might love them. Imagine the differences in your feelings and thoughts when you see that the park has the tallest roller coaster in the world. You're looking at the same roller coaster, but your thoughts and feelings are going to be completely different. You're gonna be terrified, but your friend is going to be super excited. That's point of view. Now let's connect this to the Lemonade War. Jesse and Evan are both part of the same lemonade war. But do they think and feel the same way about it? No, not at all. Throughout these chapters, we learn more and more about each character's thoughts, feelings, and motivations. That's what point of view is all about. Let's take some time to think about this. What are some of the differences between Jesse's feelings about the Lemonade War and Evan's feelings about it? Pause the episode and jot down your ideas or talk about it with someone nearby. It's your turn to jump into the story. Grab your companion pack or a piece of paper. If you're listening with someone else, invite them to be your thinking partner. Imagine that you are Jesse or Evan. What do you think they would write in their diary after these chapters? Use clues from the story to explain their thoughts, their feelings, and their reactions to what's happening. If you're looking for an extra challenge, try to write two different diary entries, one from Jesse's point of view and one from Evan's point of view. I bet you'll notice that there's going to be some similarities in their thinking, but there's also going to be lots of differences. Pause your podcast here, think like your character, and get writing. It's time to talk about it. Do you think that Evan is overreacting when he's so upset about Jesse joining his class? Think about your answer in your head or talk about it with someone nearby. Before we end today's check-in, here's something to think about as you keep reading.
