They looked upon a world that was dying. Not in fire, not in a single stroke, but in the slow and certain arithmetic of a planet that could no longer sustain what lived upon it. And they refused to let that be the end. They heard a signal in the dark, the crack, the sound that signaled the future. They could not know what it meant. They could not be certain of what it promised. But they understood what silence meant and they would not accept it. So they built with the last of what the earth could give them. They built eight ships, and they filled those ships with 300,000 souls, and they launched them toward a point of light that was no more than a number and a hope. That is what they gave us. Not certainty, hope, and the ships to carry it.

Landing Day. He was on the speaker's platform in the Grand Concourse on the Providence. 3,000 people packed into the square. Every screen on all three ships carrying the feed. A hundred and twenty thousand people watching at the same time. I was near the back, pressed against the bulkhead by the port corridor, and I could see faces stretching all the way to the platform. Ramirez from my unit was two rows ahead with his jaw clenched tight. And a woman I didn't know had lifted her child under her shoulders so the kid could see, and the child was perfectly still, just watching, you know, the way children watch when they can feel something enormous happening, even if they can't name it. When Adler finished, there was a sound I will never be able to compare to anything else in my life. It's not cheering, it's something before cheering, something that came from the chest from a hundred and twenty thousand people across all three ships making the same sound at the same moment because they all needed to. I cried. Everybody did. Nobody tried to hide it. There was nothing to hide from. I grew up with the crack the way everybody on the fleet did. In school, they played the original recording, the raw data burst converted to audio, and it sounds like nothing else. A sharp tearing noise, like a sheet being ripped, except the sheet is everything. They play it every year on Remembrance Day. And you stand and listen, and even though you've heard it a hundred times, it still gets under your skin because the sound is the reason you're here. Without the crack, there's no signal. Without the signal, there's no fleet. Without the fleet, there's no you. Everything traces back to that sound. We even did our calendar from it. Year one is the year the crack was detected, and everything after is countered from there. The data embedded in the crack told the builders two things. There was a habitable world out there, and it would take about 2,000 years to reach it at the velocities the fleet could sustain. Two thousand years. The builders knew that. They knew nobody alive at departure would see the destination. They built the ships anyway. The drones went down first. Then the sensor packages, then the biological screening units. Nobody rushed that part. Nobody would ever rush that part. The advent is why. Every kid in the fleet grows up knowing what happened to the advent. And every adult who works anywhere near a contagion protocol carries that knowledge like a weight. 19,000 people. So when the bio screening came back, it came back thorough. Atmospheric microbial analysis, soil pathogen sweeps, airborne particulate toxicity, water sampling in multiple sites. The protocols took the better part of a day, and nobody complained about the weight because the alternative to waiting is what happened in the 16th century, and nobody is ever going to let that happen again. But everything came back clean. Not just clean, compatible. Breathable atmosphere, manageable microbial load, no identified pathogens, no toxic biological agents. The planet's biology didn't register as hostile to anybody on a metric scale that protocols tested for. Reasonable enough, and everyone accepted it because we were all so focused on what was coming that nobody wanted to slow down and ask any hard questions about fractions of degrees. But Alvarez also mentioned something else when we were eating. He called them shadow readings, ghost signatures on the mid-range sensors, reflections from directions that didn't correspond to anything physical. He said it was probably interference from the local star's magnetosphere, and then he said probably again about something else. And I noticed because Alvarez is the kind of person who only says probably when he means I don't actually know, but I'm hoping you won't press me on it. There were other things too. Star chart configurations slightly off from expected positions. The navigation AI running more corrections during approach than the models had predicted for this phase. All of it attributed to reference frame degradation after two millennia of travel. All of it reasonable. My mom kept a journal and her mom kept one. Audio logs mostly, on personal pads, obviously paper, kind of a big deal to have. Not something you waste on a diary when the trees that make it are also making the oxygen you breathe. My journal is text on a pad, though I've thought about switching to video now that we're down here because I don't think words can hold what this place looks like. Mine have been filling up fast lately. The days have gotten very different.

What happened to me in the next few minutes is something I have been trying to find words for ever since. My eyes went first, not failed, but overwhelmed. I looked at the viewport and there was a horizon. And it wasn't like looking across the cylinder on the Providence. Inside the cylinder, the world curves up. You can see the other side of the ship above you, the farms and buildings and roads arching overhead until the light strip down the center axis washes it out. You learn to live with that, the way the sky is really just more ground, but you always know where the walls are even when you can't see them. You can feel the enclosure. The air knows it's contained, your body knows. This was different. This wasn't a cylinder's interior curving up and over. This was a line. The world dropped away. And the sky began, and neither of them had a boundary. The sky didn't curve back to become more ground, it just kept going. Blue deepening into something I don't have a color for. Below the horizon, the landscape extended until the planet's own curvature carried it away from me. My eyes kept trying to find the far wall, the place where the world seared itself shut, and there was nothing there. I could feel my visual processing just stalling out, like my brain was running a search and returning no results over and over and over. The longest distance I've ever focused on is maybe two kilometers, which is roughly the diameter of the Providence's cylinder. Now I was looking at something that didn't have a distance, and my eyes simply couldn't. I gripped the armrest hard enough that my knuckles went white. So did everyone else on the shuttle. Kohler, who sits across from me in the detail, had his hands locked on the viewport rail and his face was the color of cord or bulkheads. Nobody spoke. It wasn't all, it was I don't know how to describe it other than surreal. On the Providence, we have open space, we have sky of a sort, but we have the sensation of outdoors. It's a managed outdoors, an outdoors with a ceiling, even if the ceiling is a kilometer above you. This had no ceiling at all. And the difference between a very high ceiling and no ceiling turns out to be the difference between swimming in a pool and swimming in an ocean. Now, sky had color, real color, not the engineered daylight cycle, the central light strip, blue and white and gradients between them that I've only ever got to see from afar. Below, green, textured and moving and alive in a way. I have never seen anything be alive because the with Providence, the trees and the grass and the crops are alive, but they're alive inside a container. And this was alive without one, stretching to the impossible horizon and probably beyond it. We landed in a river valley on the primary continent. Three shuttles from the Providence, two from the Resolute, one from the Pilgrim. First detail was already on the ground. The ramp dropped and the light came in from a direction. Not the diffuse glow of the light strip that illuminates the cylinder evenly, light from a single source, the star, coming at an angle with warmth in it, casting shadows that moved with the clouds. And I have never seen a shadow move on its own before. That one's in my life. The light strip doesn't have clouds. I walked down the ramp and my boots hit dirt. The ground was not level, and it was not manufactured. It was soil. Actual planetary soil that compressed under my weight and had give and moisture and grit and organic matter in it. On the Providence, we have ground cover in the park sections and the soil and the agricultural base, but it's engineered substrate maintained by cycling systems. It was dirt that had been doing whatever dirt does for longer than my civilization has existed, and it felt different under my boots in a way that went past texture into something I can only describe as aliveness. And then my body did something I was completely unprepared for. The gravity on the providence is produced by the cylinder's rotation, and it's calibrated close to Earth standard. And I've never heard anything else, so it feels normal to me. But standing on an actual planetary mass with actual gravity pulling straight down instead of on that sort of push of centripical force, something in my body knew the difference. My spine shifted, I felt it happen, vertebrae settling into an alignment they had never found on the ship, like parts of me had been slightly off-center my whole life without knowing it. My shoulders dropped. Muscles in my back released a tension I didn't know I was carrying until it left. My breathing changed deeper and slower without me choosing it. Something loosened in my chest that had been locked so long I'd forgotten existed. I don't know. Maybe I'm just imagining it, but it felt different. The air smelled like something I have no name for. Rich and layered and dense with information on my nose and my brain has never really had to process. Soil and water and growing things and decay and wind, which has a smell, it turns out. A smell that changes depending on what it's been moving through and how far it's come. My lungs filled with it, and something happened in my chest that was not a thought and not an emotion, but something like connection. I stood on that ground under that sky and I felt like I was home. And it made absolutely no sense because I have a home and it's a rotating cylinder with a light strip and engineered weather, and this was supposed to. Be an alien world. The world the crack led us to, the promised place. But it wasn't supposed to feel like returning, it was supposed to feel like arriving. The feeling didn't care about what made sense. It was coming from somewhere below my thinking mind, because somewhere in the architecture of a body that evolved on a planet over millions of years and never fully forgot what one felt like, even after 80 generations of cylinder living, it remembered. We are tall and pale and lean. Our eyes are calibrated for cylinder distances, two kilometers across, maybe ten along the axis. We've adapted to the ship in ways both obvious and subtle. But standing there, breathing that air, something deeper than adaptation was talking, and it was saying here. Finally, here.

Back on the Providence, the longest walk I can take is around the room of the cylinder, and even that curves back on itself. Here, I could just walk in a straight line, and the ground kept going and going, and that messed with my head in ways I didn't expect. Everything was coming back positive. Atmosphere within human tolerance, water sources testing clean for treatment, soil supporting complex plant life everywhere you looked. The comms channel to the fleet was a constant stream of good news, and I could hear people celebrating in the background of every transmission, cheering, music playing, the sound of a civilization that had been holding its breath for 2,000 years, finally letting it out. I kept walking my perimeter and writing things down. The landscape was extraordinary and it was unsettling. And both of those things were happening at the same time in a way that I couldn't resolve. Lush vegetation everywhere, canopy layers in the forest beyond the valley, things growing on top of things, on top of things, in a density that made the agricultural sections on the Providence look like a window box. I don't have a frame of reference for what a wild planetary ecology is supposed to look like. None of us do, not really. Even the biologists are working from database reconstructions and educated guesses. But something about this one kept catching in my mind like a hangnail. Not wrong exactly. Close, almost. Like trying to catch something out of the corner of your eye, and it's gone before you can get a look at it. The whole planet felt like that to me. Something just couldn't quite see. There were animals. I saw them mostly at distances in those first days. Large shapes moving through the tree line at the edge of the valley. Too far out to get a clear look at it. Something that moved in groups, low to the ground, fast. Something else that was solitary and tall enough that I could see it above the shrub brush at maybe a kilometer out, though my distance judgment on this planet is still terrible, so I it could have been closer. Nothing approached the camp. The activity of a hundred plus people with equipment and shuttles was probably enough to keep anything curious at bay. But I kept my lance charged and I walked my perimeter with my head on a swivel because the shapes I was seeing were big, bigger than anything in the natural history databases from old Earth. And when something is bigger than you, and it's bigger than it's supposed to be, your body pays attention even if your training says stay calm. There were three lakes visible from the ridge above camp, and they were stunning. One was a deep turquoise, one was a rust red that caught the light like hammered metal. And the third was a vivid emerald green. Colors so bright they looked intentional, like somebody had designed them for contrast. Every morning people would climb the ridge just to look at them. I went up too. I'd seen planets from the observation deck. Gas giants, ice worlds, the systems we passed through. And they were beautiful in their way, but always at a distance, always through glass. These lakes were right there, a few kilometers out, and the colors were real and close, and I could have walked to them if I had the time. Tomlinson, the survey geologist, flagged some rock formations on day two that bothered her. South edge of the valley, flat strata that were too regular and too evenly spaced to match any natural sedimentation pattern she'd seen in the database. She documented them and moved on because what else she's gonna do? New planet, everything was weird. Everything was an anomaly. The health complaints started around the same time, and nobody thought much of it. Headaches, fatigue, a metallic taste that a few people mentioned without knowing the others were tasting the same thing. Low fevers and about a dozen of the ground crew. Medical called it acclimatization. New environment, new microbial chemistry, bodies adjusting. Standard stuff. Drink fluids, rest when you can. I had a headache behind my eyes that wouldn't go away no matter what I did. The sensor drift from approach didn't stop once we were on the ground, and honestly, it might have gotten worse. Ground-based instruments were disagreeing with the ship's orbital instruments, and both sets were giving different results on consecutive readings from the same positions. Tomlinson told me of her food one evening that her geological survey equipment had returned completely different numbers from the exact same soil sample point on two consecutive days. Same location, same instruments, same methodology, totally different results. She laughed about it and called it gremlins. I didn't laugh. Something about it made my hair stand on edge. And then there was the sky at night. Not just the openness, there was a patch to the north-northeast where the stars didn't sit right. It's like a smudge you couldn't blink away. I noticed it on the first night on the surface, and I kept noticing it, and other people noticed it too, but nobody knew what to make of it. None of us have ever been on a planet before, not like this. So nobody was sure what was normal sky and what wasn't. I asked Tomlinson and she said she didn't know, but it might be connected to the sensor issues. She didn't sound sure.

Heavy metal concentrations across the entire survey area at levels that don't just happen in natural soil. Industrial compounds, not traces, but structural, baked into the mineral composition at depths suggesting centuries of saturation. This wasn't surface contamination that could be washed away. This was the ground itself. The ground was made of it. The lakes, God, the lakes. Every one of them was chemical. Mineral saturated water that had been filling masses of evacuation sites for centuries or longer. The turquoise lake I'd been admiring from the ridge every morning was a mine. That gorgeous rust red was once a mine. The Emerald Basin that people had been photographing and sending up to the fleet as evidence that we found paradise was a pit where something had dug out a mountain's worth of material and left the hole to fill with toxic runoff. Tomlinson's flat rock formations turned out to be synthetic. Compressed structural materials, concrete analogs, calcium compounds, metal alloys, crushed flat by a very long time of geological weight. Not strata, floors, walls, the remains of buildings so old they had become indistinguishable from the surrounding rock. I stood on the ridge that evening and everything I was looking at had changed, even though nothing had actually moved. The rolling hills to the east were too regular. Not natural terrain, but engineer ground, graded and shaped, worn smooth by time. The depression to the north was too symmetrical. Somebody had dug that out. And the flat shelf where we built camp, where I've been sleeping for five nights, was a foundation. We've been living on somebody's floor and hadn't known. The science teams expanded their radius, and what they found got worse the further they went out. Zones where the ecology diverged so sharply from the surrounding landscape that you could see the boundary from a distance. A visible line where the green changed tone and the texture of the growth shifted. Inside these zones, the trees grew in shapes I can't really describe except to say that they were wrong. Wrong in a way that went past just being unfamiliar into something that made my skin crawl. Twisted and reaching and folding back into themselves like they were trying to grow away from their own roots. Insect activity too fast and too dense, and moving in coordinated patterns that made the air hum with a sound I could feel in my teeth. My training materials said those zones were within environmental tolerance, which is why nothing got picked up on the sensors. My gut said get out. I trusted my gut. Ancient weapons damage. That was what the survey teams were calling it. Chemical, maybe nuclear. Areas where the soil had been fundamentally changed by violence at some point in the distant past, and the biology that grew back had adapted to the alteration over a very long time. Adapted. That word kept showing up in the reports, and it always seemed to be carrying more weight than whoever wrote it realized because what it really means is the life here evolved in poison. Plants drawing nutrients from contaminated ground, insects metabolizing industrial compounds as part of their basic body chemistry. A whole food chain built on destruction that was similar enough to what our databases say Earth was like to make everything feel almost familiar, but different enough that the familiarity keeps crumbling when you look too closely. The whole planet is like one of those images where the face looks normal until you realize the eyes are slightly too far apart and the proportions are all of a fraction off, and suddenly you can't unsee it. That's what it's like breathing this air and drinking this water and touching the soil. Almost right. Almost. And that's why we're getting sick. It's not alien bacteria, not some unknown pathogen. It's incompatibility. Trace elements in the air accumulating in our tissue with every breath. Mineral profiles in the water that our kidneys aren't built to handle. Soil-growing food that's almost nutritionally correct for human biology, but not quite. And the not quite adds up over days and weeks into something the medical team started calling exposure. I kept thinking about the crack. The data said this world was habitable. And it is, it is habitable, technically. It's just not habitable for us. Something happened here between whenever the cracks data originated and now, and whatever it was changed the planet into something that looks right and feels wrong and is slowly killing us.

After nine days, we started extending the security perimeter to the southwest, following a river valley that cut through a low mountain range into terrain that felt different from anywhere else we'd surveyed. The air in the valley was noticeably cleaner. That metallic taste I've been living with since landing was faded to almost nothing, and I caught myself breathing deeper without thinking about it. The valley's geology had created a sheltered basin, ringed by ridgelines on three sides where whatever had contaminated everything else hadn't reached, or at least hadn't reached that badly. We came around a bend in the river and I stopped walking. It rose out of the valley floor at the far end of the basin, set back against the mountain where the rock face made a natural rear wall. A pyramid. Rougher and more massive than the ones in history archives. The Egyptian pyramids, the structures from old Earth in South America, the ones we all learned about in school. This wasn't sleek or geometric. It was functional. Thick angled walls tapering to a flat platform at the top, maybe 300 meters high. Wide at the base, deeply rooted, with secondary structures extending from the lower levels into the hillside on either side like it had grown into the mountain rather than just been placed against it. That's probably why we didn't notice it on the surveys initially. I'd seen buildings my whole life. The cylinder on the Providence has residential blocks and agricultural facilities and processing centers and parks. I know what constructed space looks like, but I have never seen anything built by someone else. Every structure I've ever walked through was made by us, humans. As part of the ship that is my entire world. Standing in front of this thing was the first time I've ever looked at a building and thought, whoever made this, it wasn't us. And the second thought, right behind the first, whoever made this building built it against something. This was not decorative. This was a fortress. Every line of it said permanence in defense. Walls thick enough to take a hit, angle to deflect impact, reinforced with metal, I could see in the exposed sections where the stone facing had weathered away. I could see why it needed to be a fortress. Because even on approach, we've been finding animal bones in the valley. Scattered, old, sunbleached, but big. Bigger even than the animals we've been seeing. Rib cages that came up to my waist, jaw structures I couldn't match to anything. The mutation zones we've been surveying had produced plants that evolved in contaminated soil, and it only made sense that the animals had evolved right alongside them, filling up ecological space without anything keeping them in check. A very long time of that, and you get things that are bigger and meaner than anything in the history books from old Earth. The evidence was scattered in the grass around the pyramid's base. The exterior walls told the same story. Deep scoring at the lower levels that wasn't tool marks or erosion, claw marks. Polished patches where something large had leaned or rubbed against the stona for long periods. Impact points where something heavy had hit hard enough to fracture the facing. Whatever lived in this valley had spent a very long time trying to get into this building, and the building it held. And standing there, looking up at it, I felt something kick in from way back in my memory. Every kid on the ship grows up learning about the ancient structures on Earth, the pyramids, the ruins in Central and South America, the stone circles in Britain. Every kid also learns the theories about them. That maybe humans didn't build them alone, that maybe the crack wasn't the first contact between Earth and something out there, but just the most recent one. That idea had survived as a kind of background mythology on the fleet. Not exactly mainstream, but not exactly French either. And standing in front of a pyramid on the planet the crack led us to, the mythology didn't feel like mythology anymore. It felt like vindication. An advanced alien civilization had been here. They'd built this. And maybe they'd been to Earth too, a long time ago, and the old pyramids and the crack and this structure were all pieces of the same story. People were shaking when the science team started their survey. First evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence. I'm not gonna lie, I was shaking too. We all were thinking it. This is why we came. This is proof.

25th of March 2002. It took a day to open the entrance. Three progressive barriers, each one heavier than the last, fitted with a precision that made our engineering team go quiet. What was inside was not a storage building or a temple or whatever I'd been expecting from an alien civilization. It was a place where a race of people lived. A lot of people for a long time. The first levels in from the entrance were workshops, working spaces with tool recesses in the walls, stone workbenches, forging areas with ventilation shafts running up through the structure, storage rooms with shelving carved into the walls, empty now but clearly organized for different categories of material. Whoever used these rooms knew exactly what went where. The doorways were roughly the same size as those on our ships, maybe smaller. Whoever these people were, they looked to be the same size as us. One room had what Tomlinson said was a water processing setup. Stone channels cut at precise angles to move liquid through filtration basins. All of it is dead now, all of it inert, but all of it built by minds that understood how water moves and how air flows and how heat transfers, and built it in stone because that's what they had and that's what lasts. And they needed those things. Water, heat, air, like we do. Beyond the workshops, the structure opened up into larger communal spaces. High ceiling halls with ventilation channels and mounting points for light fixtures. Then the farming levels set deeper until the hillside where the pyramid extended into the mountain. This is where it really hit me. I walked through chambers with long, shallow stone troughs running in parallel rows. Irrigation channels clearly for controlled agriculture. The troughs still had mineral deposits from whatever water had been used, and the stone showed wear patterns from root systems. Above the residential levels, the archive, the most carefully sealed part of the whole structure, heavier doors, better fitted stone, environmental barriers that had kept the interior dry and stable for what must have been decades, centuries. Floor-to-ceiling shelving carved into the walls, and on the shelves plates, metal plates covered in dense text, stone tablets with diagrams and tables and technical drawings, bound volumes made of thin metal sheets, pictographic sequences painted directly on the walls and sealed under resin. None of it was readable, not to us. Multiple scripts, at least three different writing systems across the archive, and none of them looked like anything I'd ever seen. One was dense and flowing, characters connected in continuous lines running from right to left across the plate. Another was made up of complex individual symbols, each one self-contained, like tiny detailed drawings. A third had a distinctive horizontal bar with characters hanging below it. It all looked completely genuinely alien. Nobody on the team recognized a single character. But the numbers. The numbers were ours. Ship numbers. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, zero, scattered throughout every script in the archive, used in tables and lists and what looked like dates. The exact same numerals on every interface and every display on every ship in the fleet. The kind where something very large is entering the room and everyone can feel it, but nobody knows what it is yet. A third says it's smaller than the Providence, a single point pressing against the fabric of space from somewhere else. Tomlinson says the problem isn't our instruments. The problem is that how big is it isn't a valid question for whatever this is. The same way, how heavy is color, doesn't work. We need a different kind of question. We don't have one. Whatever is in the anomaly doesn't respond to scans. The drift, the shadows, the instruments arguing with themselves. None of that is communication. It's weather. Distortion thrown off by something that warps the basic rules our instruments rely on. Ships AIs trace the crack directly back to this thing. The crack was it moving. She can maintain, but her journey is over. The Providence and the Resolute can. With repairs, with materials. The survey team's recommendation is to cannibalize the pilgrim. Strip her for parts to repair the other two ships. The pilgrim's population is roughly 40,000 people. The Providence and the Resolute are already near capacity. With the supplies and agricultural stock and building materials needed for transit and settlement on the other side, there is not room for 40,000 additional people. The math has been run and rerun. The life support margins don't hold. Her husband, their two kids. Lena's seven. Margo's four. I'm on the Providence. I can go. But they can't.

After 2,000 years of corridors and standing under open sky, even poison sky, some people just can't face the idea of walls again. A few dozen at first, then more. The council registered them without argument. But then it shifted. Medicals started flagging crew whose exposure symptoms were most advanced, the ones on the surface longest, who accumulated the most contamination. The argument was practical. These people are already the sickest. They require the most medical resources during transit. Resources better allocated to those with better prognosis. It made sense. Clean, logical, administrative sense. Then the elderly. Not framed as abandonment, framed as triage. The transit could take years. Medical resources are finite. Every breath, every birth occupied by someone who might not survive the journey is a birth unavailable to someone who will. The old were asked to volunteer to stay. And most of them did, because what do you do when your grandchildren need the space you're taking up? You step aside. You tell yourself you're choosing it. Then people with chronic conditions, then people with disabilities requiring ongoing care. Then people the medical board deemed mentally unfit for transit. The shepherd guided us through the anomaly across time, protected us through 2,000 years, and has now shown us the path to a young earth, a paradise, a beginning. Alpha and Omega, we've seen the end, this dead earth, and now we're being led to the beginning. They hold gatherings at night, facing the anomaly. They stand together and look at that smudge in the sky and talk about being chosen, being tested. The pyramid is a test. The archive is a test. The sickness is a test. Everything is a test of faith, and the faithful will pass through into paradise. This is how the triage gets its teeth. The faithful go. The unfaithful stay. An unfaithful starts meaning anyone who questions anything. The transit plan, the mining, the selection process, the shepherd, any of it. Raise concerns about stripping this earth, you lack faith. Advocate for the people being left behind? You lack faith. Point out that we are doing exactly what the Archive says our ancestors did, you're not just wrong. Something keeps me up at night. If the anomaly leads to Earth's past, a younger Earth, thousands of years before our ancestors' time, then we'd be arriving in Earth's deep history, before our ancestors, before the builders, before the crack. Either we'd be the first humans to ever walk on that planet, or we'd be arriving before humans evolved at all. And if we make it, if we build and our descendants become a civilization on that younger Earth, then isn't that civilization the one that eventually hears the crack and builds the fleet and travels 2,000 years and arrives here? Are we the reason we exist? And if we are, then we have to go. We have no choice. Because if we don't go, we never become our ancestors who eventually built the fleet, and none of this ever happens, and the paradox collapses. Or we go and we fail and we die out there, and nothing changes because the paradox was never real, and we were always just desperate people walking through a door because the alternative was staying still. I can't resolve it. I don't think it can be resolved. It's a question that eats itself. And it doesn't matter anyway, because the faithful don't think about paradoxes. The shepherd has spoken. Paradise is on the other side of the door. You don't have questions about paradise, you walk through.

Because if I'm on the Providence, then maybe I'm going to find a way to get four people from the pilgrim onto a ship that's already overcapity. I haven't been scared like this since before the landing, before the speech, when everything was still the promise and the crack was still the call, and the future was something you walk toward instead of something being decided for you by people who think of smudge in the sky is God.

Then it ended, and one of the spiritual advisors stepped forward and began to speak, and the words she used were the Chancellor's words, Adler's words, the arrival doctrine. The speech that made 120,000 people cry on landing day. The speech I wrote down in this journal because I thought the words deserved to survive. She said, We are the ones who endured. She said, There is honesty in the asking, but they kept going. Not because they knew, because they chose. She said, the ones who stayed behind understood, and we understand that some choices have no clean edge. They bore it too. She was talking about us, about now, about the people who will be left on this planet when the ships go through the anomaly.
