I had followers who wept in an enemy I had forgiven, and a wife who was perfect, and a daughter who was real, and a car in my driveway that I loved since I was fifteen. Here, the universe didn't even know my name. Below me, the mall hummed. Air was conditioned. Fountains, the music from somewhere. Inside, Danielle was wiping down a pod, placing it back in line with the others, getting ready for the next person. The kid by the east entrance was still on the floor. The woman on the bench hadn't moved. The man in the suit was somewhere beautiful. Tomorrow the counter would reset. Tomorrow I could walk up and Danielle would place the pod on my temple and close my eyes for me, and Mr. Lucky would begin. And I'd be eight years old in my parents' backyard, and the grass would be green, and the sky would be wide open, and I'd have thirty-three years of anything I wanted ahead of me. Every door open, every wish granted, every loss reversed. Every person I'd failed given back to me in a version that didn't hurt. I took my hands off the wall. I turned around. And I went back inside.
